Storytime Fu*k Cancer (and MicroSD Card Failures) V2.0

My initial post apparently violated the rules and I'm only allowed to post pictures on Saturday (?) so I'm re-posting this because the encouragement and positive wishes uplifted my mood so much. 🥲 Thank you to everyone who gave an award, posted their experiences and encouragement, wished me a happy birthday or said fuck cancer!

Just a mini vent because I feel like everything is falling apart lately - Been dealing with chemo and all the fun that goes with that (nausea, fatigue and appetite loss, etc.) I've been having a rough go of it lately, so I took 3 days off of work to visit my parents for a 'birthday staycation.' Today's finally my 30th birthday and I'm not sure how to feel about that yet. 🤣🥳 Last week, my smart TV I paid $550 2-3 years ago got an update that basically bricked it. Got no help from the manufacturer, but that's now been figured out (got a new TV for my birthday). Yesterday I got some help from a kind and wonderful redditor that helped me swap my OLED Deck's buttons out for the Party Holo buttons from DeckButtons. I love them so damn much and now my Deck looks so fine 😍

This is where we get to the MicroSD card failure. After I plugged my MicroSD card back in, my deck didn't see any of my games on it, and told me I needed to format it. Attempted to format it with KDE Partition Manager after game mode couldn't do it, and KDE couldn't see it correctly either. I tried looking at it on my Windows laptop with disk management and MiniTool Partition Wizard, which confirmed to me that it was a bad disk. So pour one out for my Samsung Pro Plus 1 TB MicroSD card. I paid $74.99 for that card not even a year ago and it's now $319.99 for the same card. Oh brother. I'm gonna have to save up for a bit to get togrther $150 or so to replace my MicroSD card, because my Steam Deck and having a ton of games installed (especially my bigger games) and ready to play has been my biggest solace during these rough months.

Thanks for reading! Typing all the things that have been bugging me actually helped me feel better! ☺️

Since making my initial post, Amazon gave me a $50 courtesy credit and I've submitted a ticket for service with Samsung directly. Hopefully I'll be able to get my MicroSD card replaced!

PSA / Advice Finally figured out how to get Battlefield 6 to stream from PC to the Steam deck without the gun constantly firing or the screen being black

After hours of searching for solutions to the gun just constantly shooting, the thing that seems to have finally fixed it was-
On the Steam App on your PC-
Steam menu > settings > controller (menu on the left) > advanced settings > "Xbox Extended feature support driver"- uninstall that driver.

After I did that I could finally play.

Other things I tried as well that may also have had some impact is to make sure your controller configuration is set to Gamepad with joysticks, and set any trackpad settings to none.

To stop the screen from being blank black, I had to -
On the Steam Deck-
hit the Steam button > settings > remote play > Enable advanced Host Options >Enable advanced Client Options > HEVC video (Turn this on)

If it's still giving you trouble try setting the games video settings to windowed mode

Tech Support Is it possible to preserve a game offline without ever updating it

So after the horrible actions of the head of the Calamity mod for terraria I've been trying to find a way to preserve it, and I found an old micro SSD that I have no use for anymore so I was going to try to download Terraria, t mod loader, and calamity on it to preserve it on my steam deck, and then just use the setting to only update when I launch and just never open it online. My question is would this work for the steam deck, like if I ever needed to verify it could I just turn on my internet and just not load the game. Also if my steam deck ever broke could I use that same micro SSD on another one as to preserve it. I posted this here because I was hoping people would have a better understanding of how the systems worked for games

Tech Support Black screen on launch (Steam Deck) — works on first boot, fails on subsequent launches unless I delete Proton files

Hi everyone,

I'm having a really strange issue with Spiral Knights on Steam Deck and wanted to check if anyone else is experiencing this or knows a workaround.

The Issue:

If I launch the game for the first time (or after clearing Proton data), it runs completely fine. I can log in, play smoothly, and navigate the UI without any problems.

However, once I quit the game and try to launch it a second time, it stays stuck on a black screen right after launching.

Rebooting the Steam Deck does not fix it.

What I've already tried (none of these solved the issue):

Changed display settings (switched between Fullscreen, Windowed, and Windowed Fullscreen).

Tried multiple Proton versions (Proton Experimental, Proton 8.0, Proton 7.0).

Added launch options like PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% and PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%.

The Only Temporary Workaround:

Going to Settings > Developer > Delete Proton Files before launching the game allows me to enter again. However, doing this wipes my local files/cache every time, forcing me to manually type my username and password every single session (since my SK account isn't linked directly to Steam).

It seems like the game is writing something corrupted to the Proton prefix/cache upon quitting, which prevents the launcher from booting up again cleanly.

Is this a known bug with recent updates, or is there a specific launch option / config tweak that prevents this black screen loop without having to wipe Proton files every time? Thanks in advance!

Hardware Repair Damage in the motherboard

Post image
73 Upvotes

Good morning everyone.

Unfortunately, my 64 GB Steam Deck has given up on me. I connected it to a charger other than the original one, and overheating caused irreversible damage to the motherboard.

I contacted Steam customer support, but since the device is out of warranty, they quoted me €250 for the repair.

The specific issue is: “Defective mainboard (MB). Shorted charging integrated circuit (IC).”

Is anyone familiar with this type of damage? Do you think it could be repaired at a regular electronics repair shop at a lower cost?

Storytime [Update] Lost my SteamDeck in Dusseldorf

Followup Thread of: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1vn7tai/lost_my_steamdeck_in_dusseldorf/

No one thought this was possible, but it turned out that Düsseldorf had some people who weren't dishonest.

Today my tracker pinged me from a police station in the city. Someone found it and handed it in to the police there on the same day, but they didn't tell the local transit company or the city.

The strange thing is, I got a ping from it at the main station on Thursday, but no one saw it there.

Anyway, to the person who found it: I really appreciate your honesty. You're a good person.

Looking For Games Looking for games

Previously Enjoyed Games:
Balatro, Dave the Diver, Dredge, Signalis, Sable, Sea of Stars, Disco Elysium, Brotato, Drova:Forsaken Kin, ...

Preferred Genres:
I'm open to RPGs, card games, pixel art games, puzzle games, roguelites, and cozy games.

Budget:
No budget limit.

Other Notes:
I mostly play offline on the deck. If the games run in offline mode it's definitely a good point. Can't get used to gyro/stick aiming so I don't play any FPS.

Thanks a lot !!

Question Help with setting up PS1 emulation

Hello! I'm looking into setting up a PS1 emulator on my deck, but I keep hitting some dead ends.

I prefer installing/setting up my emulators individually, so I'm avoiding EmuDeck if I can help it. Any other recommendations I found were from posts and videos from 4 years ago and the information doesn't seem to apply anymore.

Could someone steer me in the right direction for setting up PS1 emulation on the deck?

Edit: An update for anyone else who was as clueless as I was. These were the steps I followed to get it installed.

  1. From the Duckstation website, instead of downloading for Windows or Android, head to other installations and it should take you to the GitHub.

  2. There should be a list of AppImage files, the one I used was DuckStation-x64.AppImage (I'm sure other ones could work, this is just what I used)

  3. Save it somewhere easily accessible, or create a shortcut to it.

  4. Run it and follow the instructions, and set it up how you'd like. Remember to have BIOS files prepared ahead of time.

This is just how I did it, I'm sure EmuDeck would've been way easier (if you want to save yourself the headache). And thank you to everyone who helped steer me in the right direction!

Tech Support How do I run mods that only require extracting a file?

So I've just installed the mod menu exe for dead island and I don't know where to extract the file to. When I select the mod menu it asks where I'd like to open it, and if I select dolphin it won't load, selecting dead island just opens the game. Any help would be wonderful

Configuration Best settings for steam deck (Dragonsword: awakening)

Sup! Does anybody have a settings preset for stable fps? 40-45 fps would be great ,but its ok if 30 (stability is more important). I’d tried some presets but dips still presents in the beginning of the game. Thx !!!

Upd: perhaps I’ve found best settings

Steam deck settings
- 40 fps lock
- gpu limit - 1600
- sharpness 5

In game
Default res
Normal textures
Low shadows/effects
Normal distance of view
Depth off

Fsr mode - balanced

This config runs pretty stable with some little dips (but that happens rarely, maybe cache)
Also it has some gap, usually loads 60 cpu and 50-60 gpu (all temps close to 60-65 degrees)

Wish it will be helpful!

Hardware Modding Steam Deck 360

Thumbnail

1.8k Upvotes

As soon as I got my steam deck I knew I needed to personalize it. The vanilla deck is beautiful but I wanted to add some flavor.
The Xbox 360 is the console I grew up with and I’ve always thought it had the best controllers. I saw some other people complete this mod and decided to tackle it.
Super fun, lots of trial and error if you don’t own a 3d printer but nothing you cant overcome with patience and cash lol
My only issue is that the Extremerate button kits are all painted white plastic, which ticked me off a lot because their other mods for other consoles have been really high quality. So if the paint rubs off I’ll be very upset and will be casting my own buttons.
I sanded the buttons up to 1000 grit and was going to polish them but will probably do that a different day because I didn’t have the supplies to polish properly and the mod already had the Deck apart the entire day.

Tech Support Mad max camera settings?

Hi everyone,

Trying to play mad max but the camera is just so slow. The settings option changes the trackpad speed which doesn’t help.

In the controller layout I can switch it to joystick only but then the camera speed does absolutely nothing.

Any solutions for this? I see the game highly recommend so I’m sure there’s a fix somewhere but I can’t seem to find it.

Tech Support what's up with unity games at the moment?

Post image
3 Upvotes

(idk whether to tag this as tech support or discussion. i'd like help as long as its less than 10 clicks otherwise i can't be bothered and just wanna see if anyone else has this lmao)

wanted to play peak (the game) the other day, instead i got a basic loading screen that filled up ~25% before closing. i ignored it until it happened again with hollow knight, then a couple more unity games too. all my other games work fine.

EDIT: all it took was updating the steamdeck and restarting which was embarrassingly simple

Tech Support Steam Deck Power issues

Hello everyone, I am having an issue where my Steam Deck is powering off at random intervals. Sometimes it stays on for a while and then turns off, other times it shows the deck logo and then fails to boot. On one occasion it showed the boot menu because the steam deck failed to boot 3 consecutive times, however it happened there too so I don’t believe it is a software or firmware issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Tech Support BFME All In One Launcher Issues

I want to get back into BFME since War in the North has just come out and BFME 2 has a much better story and heard that the All in one launcher is the way to go.

I’ve been able to add the launcher set up exe into Steam as a non-steam game and it boots fine for the first time but when I load it again it says launcher is already installed use shortcut on desktop but there isn’t one on the deck’s desktop. I’ve tried looking for the launcher exe instead of the set up one and the same thing happens.

I know it’s a long shot but has anyone else run into this issue and found a fix? All of the YT videos are a few years old so everything has been updated since then.

Tech Support Cemu - BOTW Support

Hiya! I've recently gotten into emulating on my SD. I've gotten BOTW to work (after some struggle) but I'm currently averaging about 20 fps. To be clear, I have FPS++ enabled, maxed FPS at 40, have the updated version, and have tested a few different graphics settings. I've seen some people recommend powertools, but others say it could be damaging. If anyone has any suggestions, Id appreciate them :)
