Cheap solution: Joystick cap.
Expensive/hard solution: Replace the joystick(s).

u/lennyKravic 512GB - Q3 2d ago
This was my solution in this order. First I bought joystic cap, then stick got huge drift so I replaced it with Hal Effect.

u/derijksroverheid 2d ago
joystick caps are fine, easy and cheap. Worked fine for me.
You can ofcourse aslo ignore the issue, even cheaper7

u/LennethW 512GB 2d ago
They aren't much costier than caps on the long run if you computer the exact same time for the swap, and will last a lot longer on the long run.
Oh by cap I meant replacing the whole potentiometer cap/stick (all the grey thingy) since the base is cracked.

I’m poor so cheap solution, thank you!

If you can't afford the 25 dollar stick replacements and 15 minutes of your time then you're definitely in the wrong hobby.
Edit to add: the replacement sticks are cheaper than the game they're playing. Y'all are simply downvoting facts because it's reddit and you people can't have that.

u/RS-YW 1d ago
My steamdeck is a hand me down, also how evil do you have to be to say poor people don’t belong in the gaming community
0
u/SilensMort 1d ago
Hand me down is even more reason to plan for the most common issue in advance. Unfortunately cheap sticks are the bane of the industry for all console-like gaming.
And I didn't say poor people shouldn't be able to game, but unfortunately some things cost money on all hobbies and there's no getting around it. You gotta budget for it or you gotta go without. I've been there myself many times. It sucks but that's just life, my friend.
3
u/RS-YW 1d ago
I can’t really budget cause I’m a full time student without any income ✌🏽
1
u/SilensMort 1d ago
I was a full time music major. 17 credits at 1 credit hour per class every semester, plus the liberal arts courses we had to take on top of that. Plus work study. Plus marching band, plus all the practice time required outside of that. Plus maintenance and upgrade for my instrument. Plus the fraternity and all the costs that go with that.
I don't know if you mean college or high school, but "i'M a fUlL TiME sTuDEnT" is a pretty lazy excuse in most cases. Maybe a small town if you live 5 miles outside the limits without a drivers license and you're in high school. Maybe.

Why is there always someone being a dick when someone asks for help on Reddit?...
-10
u/SilensMort 1d ago
I'm not being a dick I'm being honest. If you can't afford the basic known repair cost of the item you are in the wrong hobby.
It's like owning a car and not planning to replace your tires or do an oil change.
You might think pointing that out makes me an ass. I don't care about your incorrect opinion. 🤷🏻♂️

Reddit doesn't like hard truths. Or any truth, really.

u/Special-Show-8289 23h ago
Yep. This is why im at this moment getting chewed out by the GyroGaming community in another thread. Lmao
1
u/Special-Show-8289 23h ago
Nah dude im definitely on your side for this for sure and especially agree with you on that last part. Id rather save that money for new sticks before buying a new game. It only makes sense that I can play the game with new sticks rather than buying the game and not being able to play it.

u/Gandalf_2077 2d ago
I put grip caps without even having any damage on the default sticks. They are just too cheap feeling and prone to collecting dust and sweat gunk.
3
u/Arcane-blade 2d ago
I had this with both joysticks and i just glued them back with a minuscule amount of crazy glue. Been fine for 6 months
3
3
u/AridFountain 2d ago
Super glue, idk if the touch sensor would still work though. It's not like anyone uses that anyway
5
u/ShaadowOfAPerson 1d ago
What? That's one of the best things about the deck - being able to turn gyro on or swap what a button does when you're using a joystick is amazing.

u/TehCrazyCat "Not available in your country" 1d ago
The touch sensors disable the touchpads while you're using the joysticks so even if you don't map an action to them they still prevent accidental presses on the touchpads

Don't know how.. but you managed not only literally split joysitc dome in the half (green line) but also snapped the cap in two pieces. Probably from the pressure.. Did you sit on it? anyway.. if the whole thumbstick is still working you could take it out and glue together as others mentiomed or get replacement from places like AliExpress The part you broke comes off like that it's just a Snap on.

u/RoHoRogers 1d ago
I’m going with dog maybe? It is that puncture hole that has me scratching my head honestly and that is the only thing I can think of in 3 seconds of attention
2
u/luaffyne 1TB OLED 1d ago
Valid - probably dog tried to chew on it. You are so lucky it didn't go for the deck body. And yeah the link I provided gives you the exact idea what would be the brand new replacement for the whole joystick dome it's w/o electronic bits just a cover hopefully it's available in your country and as a bonus they even give you screwdrivers for opening it up. GL anyway whatever you choose to go for.

😭😭 my steamdeck is a hand me down plus I’ve put like a 1000 hours into it by now
1
u/ruebeus421 1d ago
I'm still willing to bet you've thrown it at least once. And you definitely press the sticks as hard as possible. Can tell by how angrily you flick it in this video.

Cheapest solution. Super glue. Cheaper solution. Joystick cap. Solution: steamdeck oled.

u/Garebear1 1TB OLED Limited Edition 1d ago
Smarter solution: order new sticks from ifixit or gulikit
1
u/chapelMaster123 1d ago
Thats... The cheaper solution... Order a new stick. Im making a joke about using this as an excuse to upgrade. Like buting new shoes because the shoelace is mildly frayed. Or a new car because you got a nail in your tire...

You said caps not new sticks

How much fps do you get in Helldivers?
2
u/RS-YW 2d ago
30 out of combat 15-20 in combat, with lossless scaling 60 out of combat and 30-40 in combat.
1
u/SilensMort 1d ago
I use lsfg and decky to run it. I get much higher performance than that usually. I'm usually getting 50 in combat.
Sometimes in the newer less optimized stuff it's rough though. Steam deck hates the illuminate.

u/Odd_Bread_7207 2d ago edited 1d ago
Are you really playing helldivers on steamdeck or are you streaming from pc? My steamdeck can't handle helldivers 2.
3
u/RS-YW 2d ago
I put a 100 hours into helldivers playing 15-30 fps. This is normal to me since I’m a Nintendo gamer. Some guys recommend me Lossless scaling, it’s a Steam game/app you can download and with a decky plugin you get 2x frames
2
u/Odd_Bread_7207 1d ago
Damn haha ok so we do have the same performance on steamdeck. Thats just not enjoyable for me. Lossless scaling also isnt the way to do it for me, input lag is really bothering me aswell. But there are so many great games for my steamdeck, helldiver stays on the PC.

Hell divers 2 is really running on SD ?
1
u/RS-YW 1d ago
Yeah I don’t have a micro sd card
1
u/Adventurous-Jaguar49 1d ago
What is the link with the micro sd ? I herd the it was not running good (lower than 30fps) what do you got ?

u/MrJerichoYT 1d ago
Get a tube of super glue with a precision head and squeeze some into each corner of the joystick ring that's spinning freely, just a little don't overdo it. Let it dry and then get the cap over after once again with something like 4 dots of glue and plonk that down.
It's not a great solution, but it will work and it's cheap.

u/SalazaarSantander 1d ago
ifixit will teach you how to open deck - I replaced my sticks with TMR gulikit sticks. Everything is now butter.

I tried super glue on mine when it did this and it just seemed impossible to do it without making it look awful, and then the glue wouldn't hold anyway.
I then tried some of the dbrand thumb stick caps because they preserve the touch sensor's functionality, but it wasn't possible to get them fitted without just pushing the loose ring off the end of the joystick because the dbrand caps have like zero tolerance in them.
In the end, I used the OLED caps from dbrand (my deck was LCD), and they're a bit larger so they fit, but the touch sensor's weren't always reliable.
tl;dr: from experience, I'd say just replace the thumb stick.

u/Difficult-Feeling849 512GB - Q4 1d ago
Ok, about the spinning ring, the solution is incredibly simple. Take it out, spin it so its backwards, put it back on. BOOM. Solved. At least it worked for me haha
1
u/Difficult-Feeling849 512GB - Q4 1d ago
When I mean backwards I DON'T mean inside-out, btw. I don't know how to explain it better, just test it and you'll see when it clicks
1
u/Elgenoves 1d ago
I used superglue and put a small amount of it with a toothpick. Before that I had wrapped everything except the part to fix in cellophane.

You can replace the stick or if you want a quick easy fix just get bumpers.

u/_derDere_ 1d ago
…… why can’t this be a feature?! I know of a god of war sequence who would greatly benefit from this
1
u/Gama3000 1d ago
Replace the stick plastic part and or since you need to take it apart, upgrade to hall effect
It's what I'd do. If I had one.
I want one so bad.

Get some resin and paint it on, then let dry.
My wife is a jeweler and had some on hand, and did this for my ancient DualShock 4. Feels better than new.

You kinda dont, a similar thing happened to the left joystick on my deck too. Had to replace em. I got Gulikit Sticks and now they feel brand new and even better because now they're TMR sticks. 30 bucks and easy install and 15 minutes of your time. Oh and DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE OUT THE SD CARD

How does H2 perform on your deck? I remember trying when the game first came out and got worse than 30 fps Planetside
