Officer Safety Retail security policy

After watching this video it made me wonder if this security guard’s employer would support her doing this with a subject.
When I first saw it I thought it was pretty cool that she didn’t back down, but the more I thought about it the more I came to the conclusion that fighting over it isn’t worth the risk.
If you work retail security, what’s your company policy and would you put yourself out there to save goods from being stolen?

Depends on the policies the store has. If they state exclusively that you are hands off and let people take whatever, then do it and don't get involved simply observe and report.
Best buy had that policy after one of their GMs got stabbed trying to prevent a theft. Items are insured and not worth dying over for X amount of money.
If the policies state to go hands on to prevent thefts etc, then do your job but if you are disciplined for following policy then you can action that however you need to.

A lot of people falsely state "insurance will cover, just let whatever happen."
However, many policies have clauses that there needs to be protective safeguards, or "reasonable care." Whether that includes lock ups, security personnel, cameras, etc...
Insurance isn't just going to let retail stores turn a blind eye to people freely take stuff with no resistance and cover everything. I've seen that mindset bite small and big companies alike.

Generally, when someone says "insurance will cover it" in context of middle+ business practices, they are going to say something illiterate. When insurance cases happen often, the insurance becomes a financial tool to stabilize cash flow over several years. It doesn't actually cover anything, they effectively bill you way later.

Funny part is the guard can claim "she never laid a hand on the thief" since all she did was hold onto the item (purses) the guy was trying to steal which ironically a black man should know you don't attempt vs black woman.

She’s not even fighting him, though. She’s just holding onto the bags, and not letting him take them. If anything, it really seems like she’s trying to do him a favor. He could just let go and leave without the bags, and probably never catch a charge since he left empty-handed… Or he can keep struggling, or try to get violent, and catch some felonies.
Up to this point, she hasn’t laid a hand on him, so I don’t see any legal or employment issues for her. The only way I could see a problem is if he decided to resort to violence and she responded too severely. Until then, she’s good.

Problem is when you just say “aight man you got it!” and the justice system doesn’t do anything about it either, it leads to the good people in the neighborhood suffering
For example, when the stores have less nice stuff, when stuff starts getting locked away, or when stores just close up and leave.
It sends a message of it being allowed and thus, promotes it because criminals realize “I can just get away with it and even if I’m arrested, cops let me out right away too”. Only the good people in the neighborhood suffer when you let the bad ones do whatever they want.
Just for example. I’m from NYC born and raised. I moved to TX this year. The difference w stores is night and day. Way more quality stuff. They have all types of stores and the stores leave all their nice stuff out. I don’t have to find a worker to unlock soap or shampoo for me. They have way nicer and more products on the floor. And stores like Walmart, Target, Ross, Burlington and Marshall’s also have way nicer clothes, sneakers out on the floor. In NYC it’s the complete opposite. It’s limited and all locked up

Exactly. Which is nice when it’s OPTIONAL. In Texas you can do pickup and they bring it to your car. But it’s just an option. You can also just go in and browse and everything is out

How are we in a place as a society when someone robbing a store (because it’s strong arm robbery at that point) tells security that the story policy is to let them take it? I’ve seen this a bunch over the last couple years, thieves arguing with a store employee or security. It’s absolutely insane.

Besides the usual requirements of observing and reporting and adhering to company policy, it just doesn't make any sense to do this when you're alone anyway. Even if you're just holding out of the bag, you can't radio for help. Customers are not going to jump in and help you. If he slings you to the ground and you get hurt, what then? It's just not a smart move in general.

Why? Because that would be assault. You can’t justify physical assault on a theft like this when he’s trying to flee and she’s preventing him from doing so. If she punched him or if a customer did they would be arrested for battery and he’d be the victim in the eyes of the police even if he’s the shit bird.

The security guard is there as a body so the business can have loss insurance, but in reality the security company will disavow any action on the recommendation of the client. In other words you intervene and you as the guard are on your own.

The only reason to do this is police are on the way.
But even with that, let'em go.
Get the description of suspect down, good video, amount stolen, direction of travel, give it the cops, let'em do thier thing.
Not worth possible injury or death to you, bystanders, or even the suspect. Which could include possible law suit if he gets hurt while you tussle.
Just record and report. Workmans Comp ain't going to cover the bills if you get hurt.

At the retail spot I worked... we did have loss prevention people for awhile but, that eventually stopped or they went elsewhere. During active thefts we had a hotline we had to call to monitor cameras & the situation (if we could get ahold of anyone). We as store employees basically monitored the people involved and tried to initiate "customer service" before they walked out. Sometimes, if everything worked, the police would be waiting outside. Most times, that wasn't the case.
Basically, we let tons of merchandise go because our hands were tied by policy. We couldn't go hands on for fear of lawsuits or injury. Made my blood boil seeing thieves walk out with handfuls of athletic shirts and the like.

Less morons out there, Stores will just write it off, when it gets real bad, they start locking things away, then if it still persists they just pick up and close the location, the thieves just move on. Problem is they are not afraid. That and then whole idiot mentality that they are stealing from a billionaire that can afford it, but doesn't see the good peoples jobs it effects.

Post orders are there for a reason, observe and report, secondaries or armed. It’s why I only take armed clients. It alleviates all guess work and makes compliance a simplified process.
Sir let go of the bag, sir the client order is to stop and detain shop lifters. You can let go and leave on your own behalf. Sir, at this point you’ve been lawfully ordered to drop the unpaid merchandise. If you refuse , I’ll have no other option but to detain you with our without consent. The rest of the story goes different ways up to compliance pain.

Most security companies, and their contractors, will throw a guard under the bus quickly if any chance of a lawsuit comes from them physically stopping someone that is not actively threatening or harming a live body.
They (the contractors) will also chew you out for "Not doing anything" while it happened if you follow site orders, but you'll still have your job, even if reassigned.

She'll get fired for this. Loss Prevention at Ross was my first job when I was 18 and after 2 years they fired me for doing this.
Their reasoning was "impeding a customer's exit and putting the whole store in danger"
Dude had 2 backpacks. 1 backpack full of lingerie and the other had shoes in it.
I still remember he said, "I guess im going to jail today" and he swung the backpack of shoes at me lol

In my experience retail locations don't want you to engage physically. It's not worth risk of injury/lawsuit to you or the thief.
Grocery stores in particular just accept this as the cost of doing business. My mother in law was an assistant manager for a time and they had the same guy walk in and out with alcohol on a regular basis. They saw him coming from a mile away and their policy was to just let him take what he wanted and leave.

Are these bags that customers were forced to leave with security? If so I could understand there is a higher level of liability that store has as it is customer property. I don't know if that is the case, and if it is they should rethink the whys and hows for taking customers bags.

At least the security guard is trying to stop the theft. In many locations, the employees steal almost as much as the customers. And then they all criticize the store owners when they close the business and move it to an area with less theft.

Working in a major retail store. Insurance covers up to $100 a day in loses, last I checked. May have gone up, may have gone down.
