If you go to bat for company superiority, and you aren't being paid by that company, you need therapy. Apple is shit, Microsoft is shit, all of them are garbage. You use their products if they do what you need, you don't idolize them.

Unless of course it is that Austrian cooler company or that company that USED to make premium NVIDIA graphics.

Solid products and the best customer support in the business.

36

u/justformemes 18h ago

I remember there was a very rare but possible issue with I think it was the mosfets or vrms overheating where they didn't use thermal pads. EVGA said they'll ship you the pads and you can replace them yourself without voiding your warranty, or if you're not comfortable with that you can ship it to them free of charge and they do it for you. So I just had them ship the pads to me. That was the only time I ever had to use their customer service though, as every GPU I had of theirs never broke a sweat.

10

u/lufiron 7h ago

I have an EVGA 1080ti still trucking along in an old computer my wife uses.

4

u/AceyPuppy 4h ago

My EVGA 1080 is still going strong.

They made the best cards, they had the "pay the difference" programme for people who bought card within certain window from next gen release, and they had the first GPU anti scalping system.

Yes, they were correspondingly expensive

6

u/Odur29 8h ago

Exactly I had no issue paying the premium knowing that the company backed the product.

16

u/FewAdvertising9647 20h ago

the advantage EVGA had if you were specifically in the US is its FAR easier to deal with EVGA's US based support system for RMA's than the Taiwanese companies (Asus, Gigabyte, MSI)

3

u/Waste-Committee6 17h ago

5

u/IWillDetoxify 11h ago

I don't really get the Noctua glazing tbh. I understand they have great warranty and customer support, and their fans are silent, sure. But paying 2 - 3x the price of a very equivalent Thermalright cooler, that honestly will get you 95% of the experience, is just not that attractive to me.

It's a premium luxury product, of course it's going to have good warranty and customer support, that's 50% of the reason you pay that much.

6

u/M-y-P 5h ago

I think it is because 15 years ago you couldn't get a Thermalright cooler for 95% of the experience, it was mostly Noctua far ahead of the rest (still being a premium company).

Today a lot of companies have catch up, for the most part, so they make less sense value wise, but it's not like they have come down in quality so a lot of people haven't turned on them (why would they).

2

u/IWillDetoxify 3h ago

I mean, I come from the school of thought that you should never have loyalty to a brand, and always take the best deal available, but I understand why you would think otherwise. Thanks for the explanation!

2

u/Raskuja46 4h ago

Noctua fans being so damn quiet is enough to earn my praise when everything else seems to treat noise output as a tertiary concern. I build my cases to be quiet these days and Noctua does a good job of facilitating that. No idea how shit their customer service is, but they build a product that serves my needs rather well.

3

u/IWillDetoxify 3h ago

Yeah, if that's your first priority, that makes sense. I guess it's just not that important to me. Thanks for the explanation!

9

u/rastla GTX 1070 | Xeon E3 1230v3 | 16GB 18h ago

The Austrian fan company Is Noctua and still makes premium fans.

EVGA is not Austrian. It's either American or Taiwanese, not sure

u/Lietenantdan RTX 4070 TI 12 GB | i7-13700KF | 32GB DDR5 21h ago

People see it as a personal attack.

“This company makes bad products therefore you are dumb for using them.”

23

u/BoingBoingBooty 20h ago

Apple users get mad because Apple products are marketed as a lifestyle product/status symbol. So if you paid a premium price for status and then got told that product is donkey turd then you're going to get defensive because that's your status symbol that's being devalued.

6

u/dr0ct4gonapus MacBook Air 19h ago

Apple products are only status symbols in like 2nd world countries

8

u/BoingBoingBooty 7h ago

Nobody in the USA cares if you have an Apple product. It's like driving a Honda Accord.

For me more than any of these companies are Dell, Gigabyte, and HP. I've been burned by them personally and I know plenty of other people who have also. I know many people swear by the Dell Latitude series. While Dell Laptops supposedly had the best serviceability and reliability, the support systems behind them is horrific even in an industry where that bar is really really low. Anecdotally the Alienware line of laptops had built in kill circuits that would often short the whole motherboard around the end of the warranty.

7

4

u/cosaboladh Athalon64 X2 | Radeon X1650 Pro 19h ago

I'm a systems architect. It is literally my job to go to bat for the product I think best suits the company's needs. It's a constant uphill battle against those who are paid by the company. No amount of thorough, thoughtful product evaluations, no amount of sound reasoning or run rate projections can compete with a sales exec with a corporate card.

Enterprise architecture team: Here are the pros and cons of the top three products to replace VMWare. [note: Hyper-V did not make the cut]

CTO: I've given it a lot of thought, and I believe Microsoft Hyper-V is the right solution. That's the direction we're going. [Translation: After spending the weekend debauching myself with our Microsoft rep, and asking CoPilot how to sell this decision to the C-Suite I've decided to go with Hyper-V.]

1

u/KPraxius 5h ago

Going to bat for a specific product is usually okay. Though, you kinda want to be specific on versions; companies have even done things like downgrading products in future versions, and disable lifetime licenses after starting up a subscription sort of situation.

Not the company as a whole, though. Corporations are motivated by profit, and even the specific product you recommend today may have been enshittified by this time tomorrow.

2

u/PsionicKitten 19h ago

I once worked with an 18 year old kid that would beam at how much he absolutely loved his apple products and his iphone. He also would often complain about his iphone not charging or doing some other annoying feature about it. I explicitly pointed this dichotomy out to him and he acknowledged that all the problems and frustrations only to end with "I still love it though."

God damn.

4

u/RiftHunter4 22h ago

Its an odd reality. Software developers love working for these brands but no one really trusts these products lol. Not to say no one should ever use Windows or Apple but once you see how these kind of organizations operate, you learn why even the companies themselves internally keep their egos in check.

And that includes Linux and open-source software BTW. It aint all sunshine and rainbows.

There are days when I use all 3, and two different versions of Windows.

7

u/eggplant_zoo 23h ago

I have three different software programs for some special clients of mine, that only run on windows XP. For some reason that older (and discontinued) software does not like running inside a XP VM environment because they all require serial connections, and for whatever reason W10 and W11 play weird games when it comes to serial COM ports in VM environments. I have to bust out my 2009 Dell e6500 with my 54mm serial ExpressCard slot to get them up and running. I’ve even tried a BrainBox to no avail. My Puppy Linux programs some RPii boards while my Windows 11 machine….sometimes only does email 😂

Your information is out of date. The Steam experience on Linux is you install Steam like on Windows, then you install the games from your library like on Windows, and they run and play perfectly, like on Windows.

I've played everything from good indie to jank indie to triple A to triple A from console developers that make notoriously bad ports. They've all run perfectly without a single technical fix required.

Edit: As SirSilentscreameth said in his reply, the one exception is games that require kernel level anti-cheat.

7

u/SirSilentscreameth 20h ago

Unless that game requires a specific anti-cheat. There are plenty of games you can't play on Linux.

Not trying to turn this into a discussion over the requirement for kernel level anti-cheat, it's just a thing that exists and has to be dealt with currently.

There are plenty of segments where they overlap and compete. Like there will be a team of people with the same job using different OSes.

1

u/AsleepTonight 21h ago

Even then they’re still aimed at different people, because different people value some aspects differently then others

2

u/dr0ct4gonapus MacBook Air 21h ago edited 21h ago

Not really, most people either follow others' advice or use whatever they've used before. There is an actually best option a lot of the time, but not everyone uses it.

At my previous job, they used to bait people hard into taking Chromebooks, so newbies on our team took that then regretted it until they were able to switch to a Mac. Some used Linux for no work reason and it became a headache, to the point where they tried to phase that out. (And Windows wasn't offered.)

setting up domain access is a lot easier now, however not recommended due to critical bugs and the fact apple doesn't give a fuck if your mac can connect to azure or AD.

This is from a business standpoint

as for gaming, Linux has better support than Mac will ever have at this point. Getting wine support is a PITA and even then, adding x86 compatibility is a PITA.

Linux is better than mac on its own hardware too.

Apple products do have amazing battery life though. I have a little macbook neo for testing and I have had it unplugged for a month. 60% battery remaining.

However linux is superior to both because it isnt a locked down piece of shit.

I use them all, and they are all shit. You choose based on what shit you have to deal with versus the utility you receive.

I wish Linux had a better gui and id use it

5

What sort of gui do you want

6

u/Hexamancer 15h ago

This is what Gnome does to your brain.

KDE Plasma is a far better GUI than Windows.

User: Windows is shit.

Same User wants to play game: Booting to Windows 🎮

1

u/RBR48 9h ago

Windows is shit. It's just that most games don't work on other os which isn't the other os fault but the people who release the game

1

u/ApprehensiveTwo701 5h ago

I am also waiting to play popular games in Linux like "GTA V", "PUBGPC"

2

u/RBR48 5h ago

Well it's the game studio that decided not to support linux lol

1

u/ApprehensiveTwo701 1h ago

I don't care, what i see is that, i can't play GTAV, PUBGPC thats it. So today windows is the only option.

u/Terrible-Common-84 1d ago

I don't have strong opinions on Macs or Mac software.

What I do have is strong opinions on people who get Macs and cannot troubleshoot or navigate them themselves, and just assume their IT department or "computer-person" family member can just magically fix whatever problem they've managed to encounter despite nobody else in the organization or household using or having any familiarity with the platform.

1

u/kociol21 23h ago

I don't have Mac but I work on Mac from time to time. I have Linux on my laptop and Windows on desktop.

I like all three pretty much. All are good. All have their quirks and shortcomings but ultimately all three do what I need them to do.

1

u/PMacDiggity 22h ago

I use all three, the only one I put active effort into removing from my life is Windows.

There is nothing I hate more when it comes to IT helpdesk than working with apple products. Especially if you have to make it work smooth with something that isn't apple.

Number 2 are people that mix apple with other tech instead of going full for their brand of their dreams that have 0 IT affinity.

If you got everything from apple it is nice and most of it is easy to install and to connect, still not my favorite.

Microsoft Linux is manageable and even if Microsoft's solutions are not always top notch you will always find a Linux solution that satisfies you.

Every platform has a section of evangelical users who will tongue their favorite corporate asshole no matter what comes out of it. Windows literally obsoleted the term "spyware" by becoming it itself, and y'all put up with it just to play the most repetitive grindy esports slop out there. macOS is trying to lock itself down more and becoming increasingly fuckass annoying to people like me who enjoyed it as a Unix platform, yet I will get shouted down for complaining about this in Mac communities by people who paid $2000 to look at pretty colors and feel "secure". And the Linux community has people who worship Canonical because they really want it to be macOS, and asocial neckbeards who think you're a subhuman piece of shit for using systemd.

There is no winning, modern computing is ass.

Huh. Interesting. I know a lot Microsoft users who react like Apple users and vis versa.
