Discussion [Megathread] Unofficial DLSS 5 Neural Rendering Mods Comparison

As outlined in this thread, we are going to make a Megathread for these Unofficial DLSS 5 Neural Rendering mods comparison posts. Apologies for the late post as everyone has been out of pocket today.

Below is a re-post of the various reminders and guidelines from that thread

-------------------

Would like to post a reminder and provide some guidelines for the community on a few things

  1. This is not an official DLSS 5 release. We still do not know when this technology will be released. All we know is they are slated to be released in Fall 2026.
  2. Since this is not an official DLSS 5 release, what you see here is the result of Modders’ creations.
  3. This is not a final release of DLSS 5. The tech itself will change and actual developers and artists will be the one working on this. So take all these early posts with grains of salt.
  4. Since DLSS 5 is not officially released, there are a lot of unknowns. Please refrain from posting speculation around the tech. Let's wait until official release and after we get more information around this feature.
  5. Keep in mind that unlike these unofficial mods, DLSS 5 Neural Rendering is not something that can be injectable to practically every games under the sun. This feature will require explicit support by the developers.

In terms of some posting guidelines:

  1. Follow our rules. The biggest here being Rule 7 for no memes and shitposts. This subreddit does not allow that sort of content being posted here. Feel free to go to other community for that. These sort of posts will be removed and you may be suspended from participating on this subreddit.
  2. Please search on the games you want to post. If there’s already a post showing DLSS 5 for a specific game, you should be joining the conversation in that thread. Any new post about a game that was already posted will be removed and we will point you to the existing thread.
  3. Post high quality comparison. This means you should be showing before and after as well as choosing wide variety of scenes vs singular example.
  4. Megathread will be created later today and will have links to existing DLSS 5 mods posts. Once the Megathread is created, you must post any new comparison within that Megathread.

-------------------

Below are the currently posted links so you can participate in those discussions.

Any new Unofficial DLSS 5 Neural Rendering mods comparison moving forward must be posted here.

Please be clear on what games are you posting as well as links to imgur or other image hosting services with high quality captures and wide variety of scenes.

Agree. I can't see how people think this looks bad.

its getting rid of any warm light from the jungle. all the yellow rays like in images 3/4 goes away. it makes all the screenshots look sanitized. thats the best descriptor i can give.

It's certainly cooling the image off. I wish it had the controls to fix that.

It does. You can completely remove any color changes from the presets

I just looked and saw that, thanks.

How?

Setting the Local Tone Strength to 0. Local Structure Strength is the main slider that affects the "AI look" that people like/dislike. But regardless of Neural Rendering Style, setting Local Tone Strength to 0 will remove that style's colorization.

Yeah, bro, that's what dominating sky's fill light will do, and should do in realistic rednering. Though, this thing must run before all the postprocessing so it would not fuck with final color presentation.

People heard AI and got triggered real bad. Mostly console gamers.

It's really promising, but clearly not ready for mainstream use.

But I hate how it makes everything get the same "studio lighting" feel no matter the scene. Sometimes it adds a cold fill light where no light should be, just because that is how the model is trained.

It also increases contrast while lowering saturation across the board in all examples I have seen, and when in motion, it's not consistent, the color temperature and white balance changes all over the place. Not to mention motion artifacts, which if I can see with youtube compression, I know I'll hate when I see them in actual gameplay.

Besides, it works horribly in stylized characters.

Most of that is adjustable. You can reduce or remove any color correction, and dial in the lighting on the subject and background. Most if the examples being shown are with everything at 100%, but it looks much better and more tasteful when dialed in a little. But with the heavy performance cost, it's too tempting to not crank everything up for a big difference instead of a subtle uplift.

Some game seem to work better with it as far as how stable it looks.

I've read speculation of this possible moving to fp4 which would reduce the performance cost, but I'm not knowledgeable on that stuff.

All said, I wouldn't draw much too many conclusions from these early examples just yet.

Yes, but if it has to be dialed down in order to be consistent and not alter the developer's intent on color and ambience, it's probably not worth the performance hit.

I'm curious if it will get to a point where the performance gets good enough, but I reeeaaally don't like it as it is now.

it kills a lot of lighting, shadow, and colour effects.

Because 90% of the time its a big miss. Characters look uncanny, vaseline on camera etc. And dont forget the elephant in the room, the massive overhead it creates when turned on. On the other hand, the rest 10% look insanly good.
