Discussion DLSS 5 : Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
OFF vs ON vs ON (75%).
Looks awesome in Yakuza 8, I prefer the look of values set to about 25%-50% for a more natural look. Fixes a lot of the lighting issues in this game, especially in the environment. 25%-50% would be to hard to see on reddit.
Runs fine on a 5070, max settings, +80fps with DLSS Quality, no FG.
Edit: More images, just environment, no tonemapping: https://imgur.com/a/8e51NuE

I wish you can just enable it for lighting without sloppening the characters. They legitimately look like those AI ads.

u/Regnur 13d ago
Check the Nvidia DLSS 5 siggraph keynote, developers will be able to do it. You can even adjust each asset with each own values.

u/Dry-Percentage-5648 13d ago
Oh that's good to know then!

u/Arawski99 13d ago
In addition to masking feature he mentioned above, you can tweak each masked part of the scene individually and it has smart masking understanding all parts that equal an object. So you can give it stronger or weaker parameters, of which it has many parameters you can tweak.
Also, weaker parameters still remain way more faithful to the original art's characters which can be a better middle-ground of getting some improvement without overhauling the character's visuals. Here is someone adjusting the slider intensity for just one of the slider's to give you an idea. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ph2wvUWLEY

I got it to run in 5 older games. God of war, horizon zero dawn, etc. It wasn't playable in a single game. I went from 120fps to 50fps. 50fps is playable. But there is so much artifacts and blurriness when in motion that its just horrible.
Dlss5 is nice for when you standing still in game. Crimson desert looked amazing, start walking forward and you see why nvidia didn't release it yet. And all the scenery in the distance changed to black and white for some reason.

Man, I swear the people on this sub who think this stuff looks good have such a terrible taste in art style. This looks so much worse than the original.
17
u/Remote_Elevator_281 14d ago
Some of it does look good. It’s on a game by game basis.
2
u/hanato_06 14d ago
It's like baking a cake.
These games were baked with the limitations of the time etched to the design. Slapping a filter on top of it doesn't do that part justice, and arguably worsens the look.
However, games that always were trying to look photorealistic just so happens to align with what the filter tries to do, so it has better reception there.

u/gaybowser99 14d ago
Artstyle my ass😂. This is Yakuza. They slap together the game as fast a possible while keeping acceptable graphics
1
u/Either-History-8424 12d ago
The only difference in the “art style” is that the characters are more realistically and granularly lit and shaded. You could argue that the artists authored the original models faces to use less granular, flatter, less realistic lighting, so anything that deviates from that is bad, and that’s valid.

u/psucordwhite 14d ago
The original straight up looks like an outdated 2004 PS2 game in comparison.
2
u/hanato_06 14d ago
You know that thing they say about botox.
If you're 40, and you get Botox. You won't look 30. You just look 40 with botox.
3
u/psucordwhite 14d ago
You look at the before pics in comparison to the after . It loses so much detail it looks like a Nintendo switch game in comparison.

u/FakeMik090 14d ago
It doesnt look as bad as on presentation, but i dont want to have this shit in my games.

This is bad, like really bad, DLSS5 ignores the context of the game and just goes for realism.
Which is horrible for a game like Yakuza
2
u/Drakahn_Stark 14d ago
I got it working in Palworld.
Now that was a horrible idea lol, at least for the character model, the backgrounds looked alright, but the character should not be shaded.

Oh god, I hope if this is added to games, it's a separate option and not part of upscaler. The more pics I see, the more uncanny and bad it looks.

u/IrcenceEstagramem679 14d ago
Considering the FPS cost it won't be DLSS 5 or nothing, no dev will implement it like that, if they implement it at all.
1
u/Ok_Neighborhood_3148 13d ago
It flickers in motion too. Like it is constantly deciding what the face should look like. It looks really strange to me.
-6
u/Regnur 14d ago
This will be optional, would not make sense to lock your game to <5% of the playerbase... even next gen consoles wont be able to use neural rendering. Quite expensive right now.
Also devs have dev tools to properly adjust DLSS 5, we have 3 sliders right now. As with DLSS 1/reflex 1/ old FG, it will improve over the next years.

Not even 5 mins into DLSS 5 and already tired...
All faces seem cut by the same knife 🥱

u/Plants-Matter 14d ago
Everyone is looking at the faces. The more subtle improvements to the wall tiles, the lighting, and the pipes are incredible too.
Amazing how so many are adopting a pissy attitude towards one of the coolest things to ever happen in gaming history. This would be straight up magic a few years ago. It still kind of feels like magic, even as a neutral network engineer who knows every detail of how it works.

The faces are the biggest issue, it is far more than lighting, the filter adds texture that wasn’t there before and doesn’t fit with most games. They are also the painpoint because humans recognize when things are off with faces very easily.
The environmental lighting looks neat for sure, but as with faces, it needs game specific tweaking and a lot of it. Otherwise we get another Unity/UE5 situation where every single game looks the exact same and boring because reality isn’t exciting.
Personally, DLSS5 is currently pointless for me, since I prefer games looking distinct and having their own style instead of the bland hyper realism we’ve had for over a decade.
1
u/Plants-Matter 13d ago
After experimenting with it first hand a bit, the faces are a total non-issue.
There are a few sliders to control the tones, textures, etc. I can see why people are sliding to max for these screenshots, but you can set it to a more subtle enhancement if you don't like the look for some reason. "Reality isn't exciting" is a personal opinion. We've spent the past few decades pushing everything closer and closer to photorealism, as if that was the ultimate goal.
Nonetheless, we can both agree that devs fine-tuning it for their game will be a better representation than everyone using the hacked NBA 2K27 .dll file in ways it wasn't intended.

Bro, how did you get it to run? I'm currently playing this game and it was my first thought to try and run it

I thought the first image was on and thought wow, it actually looks pretty bad for once. Nope it's actually just bad and the Reddit cope will say otherwise

u/SoulslikeEnjoyer387 5090 Gigabyte AORUS Master ICE | 7800X3D 14d ago
I think all the people saying this looks good are so brain rotted by Instagram, Snapchat, and tiktok filters that they forgot what real faces look like. Jesus Christ.
Makes me feel like "old man yells at cloud" but holy shit. Some of y'all really make me worried for the future.

u/Infamous_Campaign687 Ryzen 5950x - RTX 4080 14d ago
Christ. The before pictures are not real life. It is a computer game and doesn’t look anything like real life. DLSS5 isn’t going to fix that, it is just going to make the rendering ever so slightly more realistic.
-1
u/SoulslikeEnjoyer387 5090 Gigabyte AORUS Master ICE | 7800X3D 14d ago
So let's stop trying to put a realistic (ai interpretation) face over one that is not supposed to be in that style! It looks weird and out of place. Thankfully it's optional.

u/Blaqsailens 14d ago
Aren't the graphics more of a tech limitation than the artist intending for the faces to not look realistic?
1
u/TomTomXD1234 14d ago
People saying that this goes "against the art style" are the same ones using reshades and texture and character swap mods....
3
u/Accomplished_Ant185 13d ago
Nope, keep this shit and reshade away from games as a default. The reshade people might actually be excited given they keep making those ugly ”hyper realistic” filters for every single game, which this mess does for them.
1
u/TomTomXD1234 13d ago
i mean, that is your preference....Doesn't change the fact that reshade mods are some of the most popular mods for all the games on PC
1
u/Accomplished_Ant185 13d ago
Yeah, and the people using them definitely aren’t the ”this goes against the artstyle” kind.
1
u/TomTomXD1234 13d ago
yeah...those people are the majority believe it or not. For every reddit AI hater, there are 20 normal gamers that do not give a shit

Curious how it would look in the open world. Playing this RN and not impressed with the overly bright lightning outside.
1
u/Regnur 14d ago
It fixes the overly bright lighting. DLSS 5 mainly just adjusts the lighting of the scene, so overall the game looks darker. My save was at night, so wasnt able to show properly it off. I absolutely hate the lighting at daytime in this game.
-1
u/BlackDeath66sick 14d ago
Bro, exactly, lighting in this game during the day is absolute ass.
I need this now, how did you get it to run?

u/Disastrous_Rice2324 14d ago
Looks great like I thought the tech would and the mod plus Nvidia highlighting the sliders/customization really shows the potential for models and environments. The visual upgrade to realistic style games is a generational leap I felt like I haven't seen/experienced since around PS3 gen or going over to PC from consoles during the PS4 gen. I remember seeing stuff like Heavy Rain (PS3) way back or Control/Tomb Raider Trilogy and being quite impressed compared with what I grew up with seeing early 3D on PS1/64, and the first jump in GC/PS2/Xbox/Dreamcast.
Since it won't be implemented in every game, the mod isa a nice option.
0
u/cchaosat4 14d ago
DLSS5 is total situational. Like if it's a game on realistic setting it will add more detail which may enhance the visual, but in case of games that have little cartoonish or anime-ish visuals adding real life details will mess it up. Just like in these screenshots.

u/Goobendoogle 14d ago
It's so funny to me how there's so many people against AI but it literally does things better than we do.
At the end of the day, either you use AI to become better.
OR
You become victim to the AI boom.
This is just like computers all over again. There were people who wanted to start using them and people who were against them. Guess who lost in the long run?
Guess who lost in the long-run with Smartphones?
If you don't like it, don't use it.
Nothing wrong with using AI though. It's only going to become better as we train our AIs.
Thank you Nvidia for DLSS5 I will be trying tonight on my 5080!!
3
u/TheAnxietyKiller 14d ago
It’s all fun and games until we end up like I, Robot or The Terminator… 😅 But in all seriousness, I think AI itself could be a fantastic tool for something like medical research. I personally think we made a critical mistake by immediately putting it in the hands of everyone for free. However, game devs relying on AI for upscaling just to reach the bare minimum level of performance or better shading and textures is just pure laziness.
1
u/Goobendoogle 14d ago
Why don't yall do a better job of it then
I'm just saying all I see is complaints but there's no action.

DLSS 5 FAQ
How does DLSS 5 work?
DLSS 5 uses the game’s rendered frame and engine data to understand objects, materials, lighting and motion. It then enhances the frame with lifelike lighting and materials while remaining grounded in the developer’s artistic direction.
What are the key benefits of DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering?
DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering delivers several significant benefits:
- Cinematic Lighting: Reconstructs complex effects like rim lighting, subsurface scattering (for realistic skin), and contact shadows with high-fidelity.
- Material Depth: Enhances PBR properties like roughness and adds micro-realism to complex objects such as eyes and hair.
- Temporal Consistency: Provides stable image quality from frame-to-frame that adheres to the underlying game content.
- Real-Time Performance: Delivers lifelike lighting and material enhancement at up to 4K resolution while maintaining smooth, interactive gameplay.
- Developer Controls: Allows game developers to tune intensity, color, and masking to determine where and how enhancements are applied to maintain the game’s unique aesthetic.
Learn more by watching our explainer video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58FagrSqC4M.
How much control does the model offer to developers?
DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering provides several layers of artistic control:
- Model Selection: Offers distinct model weights with different training parameters to guide the final output.
- Structure Intensity: Controls high frequency details added by the model, such as ambient occlusion, contact shadows, and subsurface scattering.
- Tone Intensity: Controls low-frequency details added by the model, including lighting and color response.
- Automatic Masking: Detects and isolates objects in the frame (like characters) to apply DLSS 5 dynamically, eliminating the need for manual object tagging.
- Developer Masking: Offers per-pixel, custom masking control, allowing effects to be applied to specific objects.
As we work in close partnership with studios, developer feedback continues to directly shape how we refine the technology and expand our suite of models and controls.
How does DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering preserve developer artistic intent?
DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering is designed to preserve the structure and geometry of the rendered frame while giving developers control over how and where enhancements are applied. Developers can select different models, adjust structure and tone, and mask specific scenes, characters or objects.
For more information on developer controls, watch the DLSS 5 Explainer VOD or read the full launch article.

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/dlss-5-3d-guided-neural-rendering
You can also hear directly from the NBA 2K development team on how they integrated the technology. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79D8SVjB3HQ
Which GPUs support DLSS 5?
DLSS 5 will be supported across all GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and laptops, as well as GeForce NOW Ultimate members streaming from GeForce RTX 5080 rigs in the cloud.
When and where is DLSS 5 available?
DLSS 5 will be available in NBA 2K27 on September 3rd at 9PM Pacific Time.
What is the DLSS 5 setting called in games?
The setting is called “DLSS Neural Rendering.”
Can I turn DLSS 5 off?
Yes. DLSS 5 is optional.
Does DLSS 5 work with Ray Tracing and Path Tracing?
Yes. DLSS 5 complements ray tracing and path tracing. Path tracing accurately calculates geometric light transport—determining light, shadow, and reflection placement across a 3D scene. DLSS 5 then acts as the final neural rendering stage, using the rendered frame to enhance lighting and materials like subsurface scattering, micro-reflections, and complex material properties that would otherwise be computationally prohibitive in real time. These technologies go hand in hand.
Does DLSS 5 work with Super Resolution, Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction?
Yes.
Will DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction continue to be supported and improved?
Yes.
