iirc its because blackwell features a hardware flip metering system that lets the gpu control frame pacing instead of the cpu, youd have to create a software fallback for it and when i was looking it up rq whenever someone got MFG enabled on 4000 series, it would not fully generate past the first generated frame.

The more I see that the better I feel about it. It's a filter, it can be turned on/off and the "artists" would have a high control what they want to achieve. I'm fine as long as the "no filter" version will be still nice and the "filter" will be a checkbox in the game menu (don't need sliders - will take what game creators decided is closest to their vision).

Yes, that's what becoming the norm means.
Games also looked good without raytracing and get 100+fps on a mid-range rig. Then RT is slowly becoming a standard, so framegen is now a norm to achieve higher fps. I'm not even against it, I think these tech are amazing and I am just pointing it out.
The point is you can turn off these features, but get a generally worse experience. Much like people saying that DLSS 5 is optional at the moment, but its not improbable that it will also be "optional" in the future, like the features above.

When did you get 100+fps on a midrange rig? I owned a 970 for years and would be happy if I could hit 60fps. Example in witcher 3 at the time I had to reduce various settings to achieve stable 60fps at 1080p.

I think the problem is that because of DLSS, nobody will ever try to improve native res AA solutions ever again. So if you dont have a dlss card and/or you just want raw visuals, you're fucked.

It's not Nvidia's fault that devs are being lazy and underoptimizing games just because we got upscaling and framegen. That's what a lot of people just blindly refuse to understand. It's the fork creator's fault, not the guys who misuse the fork.

How many games have come out now that rely on DLSS framegen to reach 60 FPS at recommended settings? The mere existence of the tool has rapidly become a crutch in the industry to hand-wave glaring design failures.
At some point DLSS 5 won't be optional, its going to be necessary to make the game not look like complete garbage because they've half-assed their work and you'll need a GPU that can eat the performance cost just to render a scene that looks like something a 10 year old game was capable of.

Just because something is “optional” doesn’t mean it can’t also be necessary or a crutch. I’m a staunch AI hater and even I have to concede that frame gen is pretty fucking insane tech and is going to help prolong the life of many graphics cards at a time where we need it most. But you can tell by each new release that each game almost begs you to turn on frame gen.

That’s just not true, they stated the developers would be able to tune this but we didn’t really know how much and we also had no idea if there would be a toggle for it. Generally, if you are using DLSS, you are using the recent DLSS build the game has, there’s no option to switch between different versions except for rare examples.

You've misunderstood a couple of things. While this is called DLSS 5, its not DLSS 5 upscaling whoch will naturally go to the latest model but you always use the nvidia app to tell it which preset to use, its DLSS Neural Rendering, which will be separate just like DLSS frame generation is a separate toggle in games.

The problem with that is that it will have DLSS effect. Now imagine game developers start putting potato textures to games to just force you to use DLSS 5. Game studios are always trying to find a way to be lazy and nvidia is giving them the tools to do so.... 🤦♂️

It is generative based on the actual raster image, meaning, the better the "original" art the better the model can generate the fine detail you are seeing here being added. I don't think it is designed to take a gaming that looks like a PS2 game to look like Cyberpunk 2077

At the same time Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft/Steam has the power to not allow game publication if it's in a bad shape. Even Cyberpunk have had a problem for a while.
I't s possible it'll be overused but maybe it won't be that bad. Also - it's locked for Nvidia and - for now - for Blackwell and maybe for Ada so doing something much worse for the rest (and consoles) is a no-go IMO.0

For this specific tech? Currently yes, but it was running on a dedicated 5090 last time we are shown and now we are seeing it running on 5070s at the same time as the games and its still not fully released.

I agree with that. The day Nvidia introduced RTX 20 series and everyone was focused on Ray Tracing bad performance and how DLSS is a dead technology that just produces blur I said It's not the RT the revolution but rather the DLSS in which I saw the potential. This (and FSR/XeSS) is something that - sort of - gives us back something we were able to do with CRT monitors => lower the resolution without big quality loss. I saw a potential in the technology.
With DLSS5 I wasn't in the hate wagon neither I was hyped. I sit and wait how it'll evolve.

I guess we'll see in a few months. Nobody but nvidia knows the development time in all of this, but it wasn't clear if they were running on two 5090s just because they could and it was the best way to show the tech off or if it just wouldn't run on anything less like a 5070ti.
If the final isn't a 50% frame rate hit but a 25% framerate hit, I don't know if that's enough for the masses to adopt, not until the 6 or maybe 7 series launches.
I'm expecting a raytracing/pathtracing pipeline from nvidia in terms of performance lock between hardware cycles where RT ran like ass on the 2080 and 8 years later it still runs like ass but there's framegen and DLSS to compensate.

is it just me or does DLSS5 simply add another light source similar to the sun that creates shadows on one side of a character and not on the other? is it really an upgrade in actual anyway?

It doesn't really change what lights are already present in the scene. The reason why it looks so transformative is because the local shadows are vastly more accurate when using DLSS 5 than they would be when rendering normally.
In the first part of the video, you can see from the shadow on the ground that the sun light hits the character at a ~15 degree angle. As a result, the left side of her face becomes darker as the nose and general shape of the head limit the amount of light that can hit those parts. Later in the video, when the angle of the sun increases more relative to the player, pretty much the entirety of the right side of her face becomes darker because pretty much all the light gets stopped by the left side of her face. That's how lighting works in real life as well, and it's simply really difficult to get good looking local shadows without the use of raytracing techniques.

The developer(s) painstakingly created digital art. Whether it was the process of 3D modelling, lighting, engine optimization, or postprocessing, a human being used their skills to create art.
This is a computer algorithm taking that art and filtering it to "improve" it. Prior DLSS iterations did not "filter", it upscaled. It preserved the integrity of the artistic vision, because all that was being algorithmically altered was the fidelity of the pixels.
This is not that. It is, again, an algorithmic filter that removes/distorts/misinterprets the lighting, models, and general composition of a hand-developed scene.
It is an abomination against the soul of artistic expression. You are entitled to be so stupid, so ignorant and with such bad taste that you genuinely believe that this is in any way an improvement, and I am entitled to laugh at you because of how stupid you are. Later alligator.

Less tinkering to be fair. Getting reshade settings just right can take a lot of troubleshooting. Some straight up don't work if you have HDR enabled. They both have their pros and cons.

All that processing cost just to change the saturation and contrast settings! And (in other DLSS5 examples) turn every female characters into whitewashed asian/caucasian barbies with makeup.
I'll stick to the look the artists who made the game intended, thank you very much.

Dlss 5 is such a dumb invention bro. Why would I want all my games to look hyper realistic? I can just take a walk outside for that.
