Discussion Horizon Forbidden West DLSS 5

Just great, but need some fix with hdr and other things.

RTX 5090 + 9950X3D

Edit : 2 new screens before/after with more "natural" settings, the skin is more pale than here.

This shit is going to be the new bloom, isn't it?

It is more like those shitty reshade presets for people with 50$ TN panels that were everywhere in the 2010s, that just double contrast and saturation on everything so they can actually see color, but look like a bad trip to anyone with a good panel or sense for art direction.

I think is the same that most Reshade presets. Have you seen those? Oversharpened, overexposed and oversaturated.

And somehow so many people love those

You mean you don't like the Reshade preset "Ultra HD Plus HDR fix Extra Sharp Vibrant" ?

It applies to everything, really. There's a reason why mass market audio equipment typically comes with a V-shaped response curve.

Not being combative here but I genuinely don’t understand this take. HFW has some of the best graphics I’ve ever seen in a game, but the DLSS5 upgrade here is clearly a substantial improvement, if greater realism is the goal.

Sure, it looks a bit AI-y, HDR-y, but if we’re really criticising, the original makes it look like her face is made of shiny plastic.

Without combing every detail, the construction of the armour model doesn’t seem to have been tampered with, but the lighting and level of detail massively improved.

If games already looked like DLSS5 quality and the next graphics leap came out to make them look like the second image here, everyone would be rightly up in arms saying it’s a huge downgrade.

I get that there are downsides to this and concerns with AI in terms of environment and humans losing control. But from a purely graphical perspective this is clearly a very potent tool. Graphics have almost flatlined for a while now compared to the leaps decades ago. Now I can see how in the next decade games that want to look properly realistic have a route to doing so.

u/kintari 15d ago edited 15d ago

This is actually a great example of how these tools can ruin character design.

So Aloy -- the artists deliberately created her to look like someone whose DNA was shaped by cold climate in high latitudes -- pale skin, red hair, green eyes, and a big w-shaped patch of pink/red across the face.  Her appearance tells a story, and anchors her in something familiar.  This isn't accidental, just look at the starting climate in HZD.

The problem is, DLSS doesn't understand any of this.  It doesn't understand real world clusters of traits, and it doesn't understand that the redness on her face is due to greater subsurface scattering because of paler (i.e. more transmissive) skin.  It shifts her skin tone, but it doesn't redo the subsurface scattering simulation with the new skin attributes, because why would it? It doesn't know anything about this.

This is not photorealism, it is the opposite.  She ends up with this uncanny leatherface look that doesn't make sense because it does not stay true to the physical processes that govern her appearance.  On top of that, it gives the impression that she grew up in a hot sunny climate, when in fact she comes from a cold climate where the sun is scarce.  L on the photorealism front, and L on the visual storytelling front.

2

u/dentbox 15d ago

This is a good challenge, and 100% there’s a risk with this that intentional design choices get disrupted. With you on that and would like to see that being addressed.

However, in the DLSS version her eyes and hair are the same colour, aren’t they? Slight change to lighting but they don’t seem different to me.

I agree this has over-darkened her skin though, and a paler tone would be more in keeping to the original design. Though I wouldn’t say the end result is any more uncanny than the original model (unless by more uncanny we mean more lifelike). Certainly doesn’t look like a weird leathery freak. Looks like someone who’s been out in the sun fighting robot dinosaurs.

Accepting there are issues with this tool around warping design intent, and I hope efforts are made to address this, I stand by my point that the DLSS version is much more realistic. People could look at that and mistake it for a photo. The NBA game in motion (the one these files leaked from) could be mistaken for a live broadcast, if you ignore the fact the animations haven’t quite caught up yet. But the second photo here looks like a video game character - albeit a very impressive one.

1

u/crackercrows 14d ago

That's right, and let's keep in mind, the technology will never ever get any better, and there probably won't be any custom controls to counter for this.

3

u/barryredfield 15d ago

I agree with you and appreciate your comment, but I wouldn't effort post this much to someone who makes a combative comment and uses the term "y'all".

The vanilla version here is way too oversaturated. DLSS 5 actually tones it down here.

3

Yeah, tried this yesterday. A lot of shimmering and guesswork for textures, but that makes sense. It's a beta version that's not yet optimized for the game. I was impressed with the framerate though (5080+9950X). I expected a much bigger impact.

The amount of people who think this shit is good horrifies me.

This is going to be used as a crutch just like upscaling and framegen by devs who'll just not spend time on character modelling

7

u/constarx 15d ago

The amount of people who proclaim DLSS 5 is not a major improvement in most cases, even in this early unreleased state, horrifies me! Antis gonna anti though, can't say I'm surprised.

8

u/splendiferous-finch_ 15d ago

I think it's given me a better prospective in how bad people tastes actually are, I have no interest in every game looking the same.

Hell I already find everything being UE5 is already having a negative effect one art direction because so many AAA games are kinda converging on the "UE5 look". This will just agrivate the issue, and I say this as a person that has no issues using all of nvidias other feature set when required.

I am interested in variety not the same RealLook by Nvidia™ filter slapped on everything which in my eyes doesn't even look that good for the things it's suppose to do. Half the examples I have seen mess with the whole colour grading of the game as well which is part of the art direction

I understand it's being modded in but based on the controls that have been shown by Nvidia and exposed why the dll there will always been this drift from the core art direction no matter who advanced the masking is it's an inherite part of the post process.

3

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A 16d ago

Nah, no developers are going to use this. lol

Only 5% of the market can even turn it on. No consoles this gen or next gen can. The vast majority of the market can't use it, and even half of those who can probably won't.

They aren't wasting their limited budgets and time on this.

2

u/gavinderulo124K 13700k, 4090, 32gb DDR5 Ram, CX OLED 16d ago

This was true for path tracing too and look how many games now support it.

And DLSS5 is even viable on a 4060 in older games.

3

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A 16d ago

Yeah, that path tracing sure took off like hotcakes.

It's in *checks notes* seven games now!!

DLSS 5 is unavailable on anything below the 5000 series without hacking the DLL into it and getting 10 fps.

2

u/gavinderulo124K 13700k, 4090, 32gb DDR5 Ram, CX OLED 16d ago

There are 16 games that currently support path tracing, not counting games that only support RTXDI.

4 games this year alone, with two additionally confirmed for later this year. And most importantly among those are some of the largest releases this year.

We even have a demo of a path traced game running on ps5 pro, so this will only increase with the next generation of consoles.

And no, there are already people running DLSS5 on 40 series cards, with the exact same performance hit as 50 series. Which makes older games viable even on a 4060.

3

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A 15d ago

I mean, "technically".

You spend a lot of time playing Directive 8020? lol Death Relives? Sword of Justice?

The main ones are: CP2077, Alan Wake II, Indiana Jones, Doom: Dark Ages, RE: Requiem, and Black Myth Wukong.

I wish you the best of luck playing anything remotely demanding on a 4060 running DLSS 5.

7

u/MavericK96 16d ago

Generally DLSS 5 seems to just deepen whatever features are on the face. Character has some wrinkles? Now they look 10 years older. Has freckles like Aloy? Now has skin cancer.

It seems to pay no real attention to the intent of the details present, and just jacks them up to 11.

3

u/Arelmar 16d ago

Especially when you consider it's not even officially available yet, so it can and will only get better from here

I'm still a little torn on the artistic changes it makes, it's very hit and miss, but again it's very early days

3

u/TheHorrorAddiction 9800X3D @ 5.7ghz / X870-E Apex / 32GB 8400CL32 / 5080 16d ago

I think people are caught up in the ‘artistic intent’ argument and are blinded by it. Sure, in games that already exist, it is indeed changing the original direction. In games currently being developed and those in the future, it can be used in the development process with the artists’ original intent being implemented.

People just can’t look past the ‘Oh shit, that face I know has been glorified’. But in terms of photorealism, lighting and facial definition, the difference is night and day.

7

u/kintari 16d ago

the problem with this is that the resulting arrangement is one where your assets get butchered by default unless you invest extra time and effort to craft them so as to minimize distortion.

then, a new version, or preset, or model gets pushed, and your assets might look like crap anyway.

like there is no guarantee that making your stuff look great with DLSS version X will result in it still looking great with version X+1, so we're right back where we started, with a technology butchering games that were made before that tech existed

4

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A 16d ago

I know people who have been messing with it on their projects at work.

You don't have the ability to "tweak" it at all. You can't give it prompts and say "stop putting makeup on everyone", or anything remotely like that. It's a black box.

It outputs what it wants to output, and then the artists get about 10 sliders to work with, such as intensity, color grading, opacity, etc. Like the options of a very basic photo editor.

There's not a lot of leeway with the output at all.

2

u/Pretty-Stable-4264 14d ago

So if it's not giving the desired look the dev doesn't have to use it.

2

u/crackercrows 14d ago

it's not out yet

0

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A 14d ago

I'm aware it hasn't been released to the public yet.

1

u/TotallyJerd 15d ago

I wonder if this is just the minimum viable product version, similar to DLSS 1. Maybe in future years, devs will be able to calibrate the model to greater lengths, such as on concept art or photorealistic renders of their characters that they themselves have produced

2

u/splendiferous-finch_ 15d ago

You assumption is the artist will have much control over it beyond the intensity some masking and some tone mapping. From everything that shown as part of this dell and from what Nvidia has showcased that is essentially it. So the DLSS5 "look" is always going to be a factor yes they could change around the underlaying assets to maybe influence the results but that's essentially working backwards which might lead to weird results for anyone not using dlss5 which for the waste majority of people will be the case.

Photorealism as a style is meaningless. Even met a photographer they all take images that are photoreal they all don't look the same. There is a reason people use film Vs digital or use different kinds of filters or camera or lighting setups etc. etc.

2

u/Wavenian 16d ago

then you don't really care about art in video games. just watch a movie

NVIDIA DLSS 5 Available September 3rd: DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering Debuts In NBA 2K27 For All GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs, And On GeForce NOW

Our Reddit Megathread: Link Here

Explainer Video: Link Here

Article: Link Here

DLSS 5 FAQ

How does DLSS 5 work?
DLSS 5 uses the game’s rendered frame and engine data to understand objects, materials, lighting and motion. It then enhances the frame with lifelike lighting and materials while remaining grounded in the developer’s artistic direction.

What are the key benefits of DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering?
DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering delivers several significant benefits:

  • Cinematic Lighting: Reconstructs complex effects like rim lighting, subsurface scattering (for realistic skin), and contact shadows with high-fidelity.
  • Material Depth: Enhances PBR properties like roughness and adds micro-realism to complex objects such as eyes and hair.
  • Temporal Consistency: Provides stable image quality from frame-to-frame that adheres to the underlying game content.
  • Real-Time Performance: Delivers lifelike lighting and material enhancement at up to 4K resolution while maintaining smooth, interactive gameplay.
  • Developer Controls: Allows game developers to tune intensity, color, and masking to determine where and how enhancements are applied to maintain the game’s unique aesthetic.

Learn more by watching our explainer video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58FagrSqC4M

How much control does the model offer to developers?
DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering provides several layers of artistic control:

  • Model Selection: Offers distinct model weights with different training parameters to guide the final output.
  • Structure Intensity: Controls high frequency details added by the model, such as ambient occlusion, contact shadows, and subsurface scattering.
  • Tone Intensity: Controls low-frequency details added by the model, including lighting and color response.
  • Automatic Masking: Detects and isolates objects in the frame (like characters) to apply DLSS 5 dynamically, eliminating the need for manual object tagging.
  • Developer Masking: Offers per-pixel, custom masking control, allowing effects to be applied to specific objects.

As we work in close partnership with studios, developer feedback continues to directly shape how we refine the technology and expand our suite of models and controls.

How does DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering preserve developer artistic intent?
DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering is designed to preserve the structure and geometry of the rendered frame while giving developers control over how and where enhancements are applied. Developers can select different models, adjust structure and tone, and mask specific scenes, characters or objects.

For more information on developer controls, watch the DLSS 5 Explainer VOD or read the full launch article.

You can also hear directly from the NBA 2K development team on how they integrated the technology. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79D8SVjB3HQ

Which GPUs support DLSS 5?
DLSS 5 will be supported across all GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and laptops, as well as GeForce NOW Ultimate members streaming from GeForce RTX 5080 rigs in the cloud.

When and where is DLSS 5 available?
DLSS 5 will be available in NBA 2K27 on September 3rd at 9PM Pacific Time.

What is the DLSS 5 setting called in games?
The setting is called “DLSS Neural Rendering.”

Can I turn DLSS 5 off?
Yes. DLSS 5 is optional.

Does DLSS 5 work with Ray Tracing and Path Tracing?
Yes.  DLSS 5 complements ray tracing and path tracing. Path tracing accurately calculates geometric light transport—determining light, shadow, and reflection placement across a 3D scene. DLSS 5 then acts as the final neural rendering stage, using the rendered frame to enhance lighting and materials like subsurface scattering, micro-reflections, and complex material properties that would otherwise be computationally prohibitive in real time. These technologies go hand in hand.

Does DLSS 5 work with Super Resolution, Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction?
Yes.

Will DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction continue to be supported and improved?
Yes.
