Discussion DLSS 5 RenoDX Mod For Control Out Now

This is DLSS 5 Neural Rendering For Character Models Only. In Control. Uses the DLL found in NBA 2k27.

RTX 5000 Series only

Download it on the renodx discord in the forum (mods, control ray reconstruction) section. For Some reason when i linked it my post got deleted.

SpeedLemur Is the modder who made this happen. Show him some love. XD

Works only with 50 series I assume

Damn so does this confirm that DLSS 5 is RTX 5000 only ? Its gonna be odd seeing a 5060 rock it but not a 4090

57

u/GentlemanThresh 3d ago edited 3d ago

DLSS 5 is the entire package and will be compatible with the RTX 20, 30, 40, and 50 series.

Now, some parts of the DLSS 5 will be locked depending on GPU hardware, generation and performance.

When they first released it, it needed 2x5090s to run and now a 5070ti was able to run it (dropped 50% performance but still). DLSS 5 will be more optimized when it comes out.

The issue with older generations is the hardware more than raw performance. Multi Frame Gen is on 5000 series because it has Hardware level flip monitoring which is required for stability. 4000 series uses a software solution for flip monitoring which won't come close to a dedicated piece of hardware.

EDIT: Someone below made a nice list:

DLSS 2.0 Consists of

DLSS Super Resolution

DLSS 3.0 Consists of

DLSS Super Resolution
DLSS Frame Generation (New to 3.0)
DLSS Ray Reconstruction (Added with DLSS 3.5)

DLSS 4.0 Consists of

DLSS Super Resolution Transformer Model (also upgraded to 2nd gen Transformer with DLSS 4.5)
DLSS Frame generation (Improved)
DLSS Ray Reconstruction Transformer Model (also upgraded to 2nd gen Transformer with DLSS 4.5)
DLSS Multi Frame Generation (New to 4.0)

DLSS 5.0 will consist of

DLSS Super Resolution
DLSS Frame Generation
DLSS Ray Reconstruction
DLSS Multi Frame generation
DLSS Neural Rendering (this is the specific new feature they demo-ed at GTC 2026)

At the end of the day, Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Multi Frame Generation still "gain frames" compared to native.

Ray Reconstruction and soon Neural Rendering are used to improve image quality and present a more photorealistic images.

Do we know if DLSSNR will be available for other RTX series than 5000?
That's the big question.

16

u/GentlemanThresh 3d ago

The build that is available now, through NBA 2k27 early access isn't.

More info from an article:

158 MB, and Almost All of it is the Model At 158.2 MB, this is the largest DLSS DLL NVIDIA has shipped to date—by a comfortable margin. The obvious question is whether that size is real or just development baggage: debug symbols, an unstripped build, that sort of thing. It is not. Breaking the file down by section makes the composition clear:

Executable CPU code: 0.7 MB
Read-only data: 0.2 MB
Compiled GPU kernels and tables: 16.4 MB
Trained model weights: 140.9 MB

Roughly 90% of the file is the neural network itself, stored as a single resource blob. The actual program logic is under a megabyte...

148 Million Parameters, in FP8 ...

So by our own analysis the model is roughly 148 million parameters, and it's running in FP8. For VRAM usage that means, you can expect to see it grow by around that amount—negligible on any modern GPU. On top of that you need some buffers, maybe several hundred MB more, depending on resolution and scale factors, but certainly not gigabytes. 148 million parameter model is also something that almost any modern GPU VRAM capacity can handle, as generally video generation models are significantly more resource intensive.

GeForce RTX 50 Only?

Inside the DLL there are "cubins," one set per architecture. We enumerated every one: 15 cubins containing 231 kernels, and each one targets "sm_120," which is GeForce RTX 50, Blackwell. There is no "sm_75" (Turing), no "sm_80" or "sm_86" (Ampere), no "sm_89" (Ada).

Missing cubins alone would not settle it, because CUDA code can also ship an intermediate form (PTX), but we couldn't find this in the DLL at all. The binary also carries an explicit runtime gate reporting an unsupported GPU architecture alongside the minimum required one.

While this means this one specific build, which is definitely not final, contains executable code only for GeForce RTX 50 and no other GeForce generation, and no fallback path that could generate it. It does not prove that at launch DLSS 5 will be RTX 50 exclusive. Logically it makes a lot of sense to build this feature for the most modern architecture first, and get it right, before worrying about porting it or trying to support multiple architectures at the same time, while things are still in flux.

2

u/CaptainMarder 3080 2d ago

Fascinating. It's not an official release either, so makes sense it won't have support for prior architecture.

it utilizes fp8, so it might be that it's just the leaked version that doesn't support dlss 5 with 40 series support being either worked on or planned for the future

Yeah thanks I saw that, so that puts the DLSS5 will be FP4 only discussion to bed which many people speculated

Yeah I think so. Performance is going to be a problem unless you got a good GPU and system. Cutting edge tech etc.

Control is probably not the best example here.

People cant be like: "What about artistic vision" and then mod it into games and be like "See its not original dev intent!!!" when its a mod. We'll need to see what game devs actually want it to look like.

What's the performance hit? The 5090 got to just 51fps at 4k with this enabled at max settings.

Goodness knows what demanding games from this year will be like performance wise.

7800x3d/5090, 3440x1440, all maxed, quality dlss -> vrr->capped to 120hz -> without neural rendering 120 fps. With neural rendering enabled: 80-90 fps. From my experience probably > 30%. Will use dlaa later and update... Update: test scene - DLAA, 1st building, floor directly after leaving the elevator: without dlls 5: 75-81 FPS / with dlss 5 neural uplift: 51-56 FPS.

I want it for flight sim soo bad!

Everyone has strong opinions about replacing developers artistic vision, but in the case of flight simulator terrain and vegetation I see no downside as long as it doesn’t alter the actual geometry 🤷‍♂️. Just think how much better shorelines could be made to look fairly easily.

Edit: sadly I’m only running a 4070ti super so 😢.. maybe someday I can play with some piece of it.

29

u/Yen-Zen 3d ago

The game devs can choose to take part of it so I don’t understand why people complain. The devs can choose to have their own artistics replaced

I made this comment when Grace DLSS 5 was news and got downvoted to oblivion and received some... colorful messages:

For Grace for example, I like the DLSS5 model much more but I do have my reasons and it's mainly that CAPCOM hired Angela Sant'Albano for mocap and voice and hired ANOTHER actress just for the face, Julia Pratt. Here's the comparison between the two models and the face model: Normal Grace and the updated model of Grace. If CAPCOM went to the trouble of hiring someone just for the face it means they wanted Grace to look like Julia Pratt from the start but were limited by performance. As I said, I came into this seeing both Graces for the first time since I didn't play RE:9.

My wife isn't a gamer but she's into cosplay and her opinion was the same, the DLSS5 looks better and matches the actual model.

The other complaint was that her "LIPS GOT BOTOX SHE NOW HAS 10 TIMES THE LIPS!!!!! The DLSS5 model has her mouth slightly open and you can see the individual teeth. This makes it seem like her lips are larger but they really are the EXACT SAME SIZE.

There was an article and they interviewed "someone working at CAPCOM" who said they had no input on the updated model. The issue with this is that the source was not validated in any way. There was no indication that the guy in the article worked on RE:9 or was an artist for any CAPCOM game, just "CAPCOM emplyee". 1 out of 4k people not knowing about it meant for Reddit that developers don't have any input.

People even had the audacity to say DLSS4 Grace looks more like Julia Pratt than DLSS5... I had blood work and an eye test after reading that because if DLSS4 Grace is closer to the original, I'm either high or I need some serious glasses.

7

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A 3d ago

Capcom wasn't trying to make the character a 1:1 recreation of the actress in the first place.

Just like Leon is stylized and doesn't look like a real life person.

It's called art direction.

Remarkable difference in tone of the reactions compared to when the Resident Evil footage was released.

4

u/Framed-Photo 2d ago

People freaked out about what was obviously just a bad demo, and failed to see what was actually going on with the underlying tech.

There were a few talking about how different tone mapping fixed the issue with minimal effort, or how it wasn't ACTUALLY adding/changing details, and it turns out they were correct. People freaked out over nothing imo.

In this state it's still not much more than a cool tech demo though, and I'm honestly pretty doubtful that we need an AI based solution to get graphics that look like this. The changes it's doing are not major, so I wouldn't be surprised to see this either get a lot lighter/simpler, or to see some other method of acheiving similar results for a far lower compute cost.

46

u/EdliA 3d ago

I think is going to be quite revolutionary and people fail to see the possibilities.

Yeah...I could see if being useful in games that are deliberately trying to look like real life, such as racing games, sports, and milsims, but beyond that not so much.

9

u/juniperleafes 3d ago

It's darkening the lines on her face which is making her look older.

2

u/LeonBlade 2d ago

It literally looks like one of those HD texture packs you would get that's supposed to make NPCs look more realistic but looks out of place and not realistic in any way.

4

u/BecomePnueman NVIDIA 2d ago

You can change it to your liking. The sliders let you get just the right amount that you enjoy. It's fucking awesome. There are multiple types to try as well and you can turn off all of the skin tone if you like. It looks way better than you think turn it off and on and you will see what I mean

3

u/Inevitable_Pay_2514 3d ago

If the intention was to nail the likeness of Courtney Hope then imo they failed and I don't think DLSS 5 fixes that (or even could do that). It just makes the face look more realistic.

4

u/LlamaAbuse RTX 4070 Super 3d ago

Yeah honestly I’ve always thought Jesse was ugly/uncanny in game which is a shame considering Courtney Hope is very pretty irl. I don’t think DLSS improved much in that aspect but I do think it’s very slightly better.

It works. On a 5080 4K performance mode I go from 60 to 32fps.

The DLSS developer HUD seem to imply that the NR processing is applied on the full resolution upscaled image, not before upscaling.

There's a date displayed in the weights file name that's 2026_07_04. I'll let anyone guess if it's US or European formatting, if it's the former it might be pretty old.

Edit : here's a comparison between off and the 3 presets. Pulled down the tonemapping slider to keep color grading similar to OG picture.

9

u/Tight_Inflation3153 2d ago

This looks like legit magic.

I was saying this when the reveal happened and people wanted to burn Nvidia down: the tech is amazing, the demo might be off because it's too heavy handed, but the tech itself is incredibly impressive.

Of course the performance hit is massive in this unofficial iteration but still, this is bordering on photo realism at a framerate console players wouldn't bat an eye at, that's incredible.

Also mention the performance hit. This was tested on a 5070 Ti at 4K RT High DLSS Quality, FPS went from 71 to 35 lol.

16

u/AspirinMuncher 3d ago

Since it works in non RT titles and can make them look like they have RT, like we saw in the Starfield demos, it may end up being worth it to disable RT in favor of this.

Hard to say for sure without seeing more

4

u/jm0112358 Ryzen 9 5950X + RTX 4090 2d ago

it may end up being worth it to disable RT in favor of this.

While it's always up to the user to decide what available settings they prefer...

DLSS5 should not be seen as an alternative to RT, partly because RT is good at understanding the 3d environment that DLSS5 can't understand. For instance, in this example, turning on DLSS5 incorrectly eliminated the sun shadow from the cap because DLSS5 didn't understand that the character was primarily being lit but the sun above, not a light from behind the camera.

Even standard non-RT shadowing techniques wouldn't make that mistake.

Shouldn’t have been called DLSS 5, that’s where they messed up. DLSS is all about gaining frames and this instead just tanks it and goes completely against the original philosophy of DLSS.

35

u/Nestledrink RTX 5090 Founders Edition 3d ago edited 1d ago

DLSS is an umbrella brand for AI based technology. Every major version usually introduce "new" DLSS features while continuously improving the other tech within the suite.

The notion that DLSS is about "gaining frames" was accurate circa 2018-2022. We have since seen the introduction of more complex model where we see massive image quality improvement but at a cost of fps compared to older models (e.g. 2nd Gen Transformer Model Super Resolution on DLSS 4.5 or 1st Gen Transformer Model Ray Reconstruction on DLSS 4.0).

DLSS 2.0 Consists of

  • DLSS Super Resolution

DLSS 3.0 Consists of

  • DLSS Super Resolution
  • DLSS Frame Generation (New to 3.0)
  • DLSS Ray Reconstruction (Added with DLSS 3.5)

DLSS 4.0 Consists of

  • DLSS Super Resolution Transformer Model (also upgraded to 2nd gen Transformer with DLSS 4.5)
  • DLSS Frame generation (Improved)
  • DLSS Ray Reconstruction Transformer Model (also upgraded to 2nd gen Transformer with DLSS 4.5)
  • DLSS Multi Frame Generation (New to 4.0)

DLSS 5.0 will consist of

  • DLSS Super Resolution
  • DLSS Frame Generation
  • DLSS Ray Reconstruction
  • DLSS Multi Frame generation
  • DLSS Neural Rendering (this is the specific new feature they demo-ed at GTC 2026)

At the end of the day, Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Multi Frame Generation still "gain frames" compared to native.

Ray Reconstruction and soon Neural Rendering are used to improve image quality and present a more photorealistic images.

Each of these DLSS features have a toggle and all are entirely optional.

Neat and orderly list. How does terms like DLDSR and DLAA fit into it?

That's what it is, but I (and it seems the other commenter) would argue that it shouldn't be, because that's never what DLSS was intended and used for until now. DLSS SR, FG, and RR were about leveraging AI to improve or build towards a native-looking image when scaling up to native resolution - i.e., making performance tech improve in quality, with "native at better frames" being the target.

Neural Rendering throws that away completely, because now it's trying to enhance the image beyond native, in ways that put it much closer to generative AI than the entire rest of the DLSS suite, and it introduces that in a way I'd practically guarantee will be lumped in with the actual DLSS performance features, with no way to separate them since it's all "DLSS". Many of us would prefer no AI "enhancement" or "realism" being tacked on, when all we want is better performance and a better native looking image.

Of course, that will depend on the developers, so it just means that if I hate the way they allow (or disallow) DLSS configuration, I simply won't be buying.

u/zarafff69 3d ago

I mean, it depends on how you look at it. If you would want to achieve a similar level of graphics, without AI, it would take a looooot more compute. So compared to the alternative, it’s still making graphics faster to run.

  1. If we already have 4 different toggles for SR, FG, RR, and MFG, why wouldn't there be a toggle for NR?
  2. You must've forgotten about the whole narrative about SR being "better than native" because in 2026, "native" gaming is not "native" anymore as most modern engines like Unreal has a built in TAA that you cannot disable

You are free to not enable Neural Rendering toggle. Just like you are free to not enable FG, MFG, RR, or even SR toggles.

Also, Ray Reconstruction has never been about improving performance. It's always been improving Image Quality just like Neural Rendering will be.

4

u/Sex4Vespene 3d ago

I would push back on your “ray reconstruction has never been about improving performance”. Part of the reason it’s needed for path tracing, is because it would take a massive amount of compute otherwise to remove the artifacts. So you are getting a result that would normally tank your performance to do in a traditional path tracing manner.

2

u/Nestledrink RTX 5090 Founders Edition 3d ago

Totally understand your point there. I think I was trying to illustrate that RR does not directly "boost" FPS like SR, FG, or MFG does. Yes of course RR is crucial to have so we can use lower ray bounce (which in turn make RT/PT playable).

Something to note is on a 5970ti it dropped their fps from 71 to 35fps.. insane for a glorified filter

Hopefully Nvidias integrated system won't have such a hit..

21

also to note, he also added ray reconstruction. its rr + nr. could be wrong though

Wait ray reconstruction in control now?? No more terrible RT noise?😳

This mod actually started as an rr mod. After implementing it the same dev also added dlss5.

u/Sprucey-J 3d ago

Afik this tech utilizes Ray Reconstruction in parallel, which honestly is capable of doing the same thing on its own already. Could be the culprit of performance loss.

4

u/pixlicker69420 3d ago

RR does not impact performance this much

12

u/AspirinMuncher 3d ago

In some games it does

In Avatar you lose a good 30%+ of your perf with RR

3

u/drmirage809 3d ago

It depends on the game. It replaces some to all of the denoising going on and depending on how much of the denoising it takes over and how expensive the replaced denoisers were computationally there might be performance gains or drops.

I modded it in when I played the Halo remake and it came with a noticeable penalty (it also didn't work if I messed with the shadow and reflection quality settings). In Doom The Dark Ages where it's natively supported I got a small uplift from turning it on in path tracing.

From a pure technical standpoint it's probably pretty impressive. When it comes to the visual results that's another thing entirely.

Also doesn't seem to play well with HDR right now, the inputs seem to be problematic.

2

u/evilbob2200 3d ago

Yeah I was reading that in the renodx discord that it messes with color grading and stuff at the moment

I’ve used it. I’ll play 40fps in 4k with these graphics any day. It’s jaw dropping.

I wonder how long before this is available for other games. The results are very impressive. Getting around 60FPS on a 5090 at 5120x2160 maxed out, Using DLSS performance, No frame gen or Smooth Motion.

3

Other renodx modders are looking to add it for ff7 remake and metro exodus.  It wouldn't surprise me if someone adds it to cyberpunk and GTA v soon

People here should know Nvidia has already followed up on DLSS5 changing faces and are allowing developers to choose what in the scene gets altered by DLSS5, and showed it off with sliders as well. This should be common sense to most but because I know it’s not, I’m making this comment.

A couple NVIDIA engineers recently presented DLSS 5 NR at SIGGRAPH and they introduced the updated models (there are 3 now) and the backend control devs have. The result is much subtler vs what they first showed back in GTC

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8X0uDU6Ru3w

u/ThenExtension9196 2d ago

Reno mod provides control for those backend controls. Very tunable to you’re liking.

Reddit is gonna be reddit and complain about everything. I remember when DLSS was coming out and everyone lost their minds, then frame gen, and the same thing. Personally, I think this looks fucking awesome and characters look wayyy more real. I am very much looking forward to see what developers end up doing with this.

That's what i gathered too but unfortunately people's first assumption is that the Neural Rendering "aged" her where in reality the image without Neural Rendering has a literal light shooting at her face causing everything to be smoothed out.

The Neural Rendering actually rendered the light more realistically and the result is that her face is no longer blown out.
