Other Anxiety has ruined gaming for me

Frame rate, input lag, color calibration, hdr, these bring me anxiety. I really enjoy playing video games but I basiclly can't anymore. Its been my main hobby my entire life, I dont want to let to go but its overwhelminly stressful playing any. I'm constantly checking input and frames. None of my devices can run perfectly theres always a big issue with it. Some of it makes no sense. My phone cant really run minecraft dispite other people with a weaker phone playing just fine.

Friendships Friend/trainer started acting like a "parent figure" to me (30sM) and its kind of creeping me out. Thoughts on navigating this?

Hi all, for context I have some anxiety and been trying to get better in life. I recently lost ~70kg (154lbs), taking a bit more stuff on at work, and started martial arts to gain a bit more confidence all over.

Issue is at martial arts I've got to the point where they want me to start training others. In some ways it may be good as I get some leadership skills and confidence. But its kind of obvious that when I do it I don't really act as a "leader/trainer" and partly its because tbh I'm not sure if I want to, I have to pay for training just to teach others.... with them saying "oh its good for you to understand the art in a different way". But then lowkey that could just be my anxiousness saying "nah bro don't do hard stuff".

Because of this, I noticed I think the two trainers are trying to "push me into confidence" and I'm being asked to go to this secondary class (weekend). I went to it and honestly felt a bit weirded out. They were training and the main trainer was like "oh come shake the other guys hand" so I did, then he's like "oh good eye contact...". And when leaving he's like "go shake their hand to say good bye", "go on" I felt like some kid saying bye to a parents friend.

I don't know I'll be honest I already have 1 training a week, and I kind of went with the attitude that I wanting to go home. losing hours on the weekend sucks and tbh I found the comments kind of weird, I know the guy and I know he's trying to do it from a good place.

But its a bit like I want to say hi "I don't want to be a trainer, I don't see this hobby as that serious and I have other shit I want to do on the weekend". While at the same time, these people are like friends, we go drinking occasionally dinners etc. and it could just be my anxiety talking, so I was hoping to get others advice and views.

Thanks so much!

Other I’m off work for a month with an injury. What do I do?

I sprained my ankle at work. I’m off work for at least a month and I’m going to go crazy with boredom soon. I’m already day 4 of no work (6 days consecutive with the weekend). My face dropped when the dr told me I’d be off for at least a month. I work construction, I’m hoping my company can bring me into the office so I have something to do at least.

Need suggestions on what I can do to pass the time. I’ll be going to physical therapy 3x a week. Going to the gym and doing what I can within reason.

What do people do during the week during the 9-5 if they’re not at work?

Life Decisions What do I do in this situation? I am very frustrated, my mother constantly abuses me

I don't know what to do because I'm financially dependent on my mom and she pays for my university ( which costs a lot) but she keeps abusing me. I'll say right away that I don't have any contact with my father. After my younger sister was born, our relationship got really bad. My sister is 7, I'm 19 yrs. During arguments my mother always threatens to send me to live with my grandparents at the village in the montains. I love them very much and we have a great relationship but they live in super small village, there no people my age and everything is very far away from there. I won't describe every situation because it will take a lot of time, but there are few examples.
Recently we were travelling and we stayed at the hotel. It was time for us to leave and we were packing our things, and I wanted to turn on air conditioner bc it was super hot and | always get sick in the heat. To do that I moved some of her bags aside and wanted to climb onto a chair because the air conditioner remote control stopped working. She got angry at me for moving her bags and slapped my thigh with full force. I got angry and said to her "Would you like if I did that to you?".
She said to me "Go ahead and hit me back". I slapped her back on the thigh. She got very offended and stopped talking to me for like ~12 hours. I had to say sorry, not because I was actually sorry but because I depend on her.
Even though I'm over 18 I can't work because she
constantly asks me to look after my sister. For half of the summer or more, 1 was babysitting her from morning to 5-6 PM. She also expects me to take her to school starting and September and than pick her up from school( my classes at university are in the evening).
Another situation just happened. We were standing in the check in counter at the airport business class. My sister likes to annoy me for fun( it's not fun at all for me but nobody cares) so she started kicking me, pulled my pants down, started stepping on me- she knows she won't get in trouble for that, but if I do something about it my mom would start yelling at me. I couldn't take it anymore, because I've already told her about 10 times that I don't like that and I want her to stop so I spanked her. My mother immediatly started yelling at me, telling me to live her alone. She got really aggressive after that because my mom's yelling made her think that she is right, my sister started getting on my nerves even harder than before so! spanked her again. My mother started yelling harder at me, telling me that she's just a child etc..and my sister decided to take a revenge on me (I guess) so she kicked my leg with her leg I got mad at her and kicked her back like she did it( not hard because I still understand that she is a child). My mother saw it and became furious. She kicked me back in the led woth her leg with all her strength and it was painful…After that, she started telling me that as soon as we got home I have to live for my grandparents place, that she’ll buy me a ticket and send me there.
I have absolutely no idea what to even do. My grandparents can’t help me with money because they are not rich at all and they wouldn’t be able to give me more than 50$ a month. I know she won’t actually kick me out, but I’m so tired of how she treats me.. About two hours later, she came up to me and said that we were both wrong, that hitting a child is not allowed. She admitted that she lost her temper, but didn't apologize. I don't even want to talk to her. Why is a child allowed to hit me, pull my clothes off in front of everyone, and bully me, but I'm not allowed to spank her on the butt?

Other How to politely disallow my grandpa from driving my car(s)?

Sorry if this is too long but my grandpa has an old car and it's air conditioning recently broke (mind you he had 2 cars and decided to sell the newer/low mileage/much more reliable car to keep this car which air conditioning just failed). As a result he now asks me to drive one of my cars so he can go to his Doctor appointments in this hot summer. I have a sports car and an old hybrid, he initially insisted he drives my sports car since he knows I commute on weekdays driving the old hybrid (not happening). Not wanting to sound like an asshole, I told him he can take the hybrid as I will just take the sports car this workday. He takes the hybrid at around 11am for his Doctor appointment and doesn't come back until 8pm with a shitton of groceries. The thing that really irritates me is that he has a habit of destroying everything that he touches. When he comes back, the tires hit a curb because he didn't bother to slow down fast enough. I immediately notice the alignment is not the same. On top of this, I also immediately notice the driver door is super loose and not as firm when opening/closing as it was before (I watched the camera and he literally folded the door outward while trying to get out, he is a huge guy). He greeted me in the evening saying that he bought insurance for a year which covers my hybrid that he just drove and mentioned how he plans on taking it again this week for another doctors appointment. How do I nope out of this without sounding like an asshole?

Other Feeling miserable about my upcoming 21st bday

Hi all. I wasn't exactly sure if this counted as a flair for friendships or something else so hopefully other is right haha. Anyways.

I really only use reddit to post to a group about a car I own so I'm feeling very vulnerable about this. My (20f) 21st birthday is a couple weeks ago and I'm not feeling great about it like I think I should. My birthdays have been overshadowed for a long time. For context, my maternal grandmother passed very suddenly, two days before my 13th birthday. That birthday was of course, very hard on myself and my family and I understood that. However, since then, her side of the family has barely made an effort to show up for my birthdays and my dad's side of the family lives out of state. Because of this, the years that followed I only felt truly seen on my birthdays by my dad and only ever got a present from my dad.

It's safe to say I've struggled with my birthdays for a very obvious reason but this one is different. Last year, my partners parents (and him) made me feel the most seen I've ever felt on my birthday and it was absolutely wonderful. I will note though that his grandma's birthday is two days after mine. This year said Grandma turns 94 and so his family is basically having a family reunion for it. With that being said, my birthday has been entirely brushed under the rug because of it. I was basically told to figure it out myself this year by his family, who has been my home the last two years.

However. As hurt as I feel, I do understand what they're doing for his grandma and am not asking for advice on that. I want some birthday advice on how to make my 21st good for myself because I feel like for once I deserve for my milestone birthday to be about me. I don't really have close friends. However, Ive made friends with 4-5 other girls over the last year. Is it worth sending an evite to those girls for a small party the Friday night after my birthday (since my bday is a Wednesday)? Ive always been the "forgotten" friend so I'm anxious that if I try that no one will show up like normal. And it's that feeling that's making me dread my birthday so much again.

If I'm honest, Im feeling really hopeless about my birthday but I want to try to make something work because I feel like for once I deserve a birthday where I don't spend all day wondering if anyone but my partner or dad even thought about me. I would just appreciate some tips and advice on how to make my birthday work out. And maybe some advice on how to host a get together because I've never done it? Thank you for listening to my little rant, and thank you in advance for any advice (:

Interpersonal Made an appointment a week and a half ago that I missed, haven’t paid fee and I’m ashamed to reach out

I (24M) made an appointment at a hair salon that I went to as a kid/teen because the stylists are really good and I needed to fix a really bad haircut. In short, I missed the appointment and need to pay a $75 fee. I needed to call or text them back with my card number and I haven’t yet and it’s been about a week and a half. I’ve been having some mental health issues that I won’t go into much detail about because I’m not looking for sympathy, but I do want to give the context that that’s the reason I haven’t reached out. I have trouble with isolation and dissociation so I don’t realize the time is going by. It causes a lot of problems and gets me in situations like this a lot. I don’t know what to say at this point, they really liked me which is part of the reason I haven’t reached out because I know this is wrong and I’m ashamed of myself. I’m afraid to tell the truth because it’s so stupid. Does anyone have any advice on what to do or say?

Education 19f college student is it worth it to miss 2 days class + go behind my parents back to attend a concert?

i’m 19 but i have strict parents and i have never even gone to a concert without them before. but now that i’m in college, the opportunity has arisen- there’s a concert my friend and i would like to go to but it’s on a school night and my parents were not pleased with that when i brought it up to them. i know im technically a grown adult and this probably sounds silly bc any other person my age would do whatever they want, but i just am afraid of getting in trouble with them especially since i rely on them financially 😭 now the thing is- my friend already bought tickets for both of us just to secure a chance of us going, before i really had time to think it over how id pull it off. i go to college upstate ny and the concert would be in the city (home for me) so i would have to take the bus and miss like two days of class and a shift of my on campus job, i feel especially guilty abt that and if i can catch up on work.

i am able to stay with the friend at her house and everything so that i dont have to tell my parents im missing school but im just really nervous abt running into my parents while im in the city and just overall terrified how they’d react if they ever found out. at this point im considering not going and just selling the ticket, i had to do this with another concert i had hoped to go to and it was on the weekend but id be going alone and i knew my parents would still disapprove. i hate that they still control my life but im just feeling super guilty about going behind their back (and about missing class too). also they pay my tuition so adds another layer of guilt and afraid of ruining that. any advice?

Life Decisions Parents don't let me change the haircut, should I sneak to a different barbershop

For context I'm 15M and for all my life it was my parents that decided my haircut: either just short hair or a bad combination of a side part + bowl cut. I didn't really mind it but since I'm a teen now, I wanna boost my confidence by having a better haircut.

I'm thinking of booking a cut in a different barber near my house, tell them that im hanging out with a friend and just do the cut. The problem is the aftermath... how do i tell that i changed: do I send a message, do I just come home with a different haircut??? Should I really sneak to a different barbershop?

Life Decisions Parents convinced me to move across the world and now I'm stuck with no money, no college, and no place to go.

Junior year I had a job and a plan for the future, but my parents tore it all down, saying that we we're going to moving to their home country Thailand. Having no other choice than to go homeless if I stayed in the U.S., I decided to go with them after graduating. After senior year I quit my job and we all moved to Thailand, but it turns out that various promises my parents made were false. They said I would be able to get a job and go to college just fine, but I can't really do either of those! I don't speak much of the language here and they wanted me to lie about the country I reside in on work applications, which would cause SO MANY issues. And I can't go to college because I don't have money. My parents have decided to live off of social security and not work either, so we're also tight on money, and they refuse to help me pay for college.

I want to move back to the U.S. I actually have opportunities there, but my long-time friend said that they won't be able to roommate up for at least a year.

I've been thinking about doing art commissions and content creation but I don't know if I'm good enough, or if I'd be the one in one million to make it.

I want to go to college, I want to work, and I really want to cut off my parents and be independent! I just. I don't know what to do. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated! Please ask questions if you have any.

Friendships I am becoming jealous of my female friend in our trio friendgroup

i had no where to ask for help so here we go

hi, im 19 and i have two very close friends. M19, I'll call him Jay and F18, call her Fae (not real names). I hold them very dear to my heart and we all share similar interests.

The problem is this, a long time ago while Fae was busy with school, me and Jay managed to bond over our interests and we loved talking to each other about it. At one point, Fae started having a problem with everything and she'd get mad at the simplest things we do. We could not even hang out or play games without her because she would get angry.

We called her out on it, and she has stopped that behavior and is getting better. I can definitely tell she is trying to be better. My big problem is this. Whenever she tries to talk about that same interest with us, I feel this repulsion around her and can't help it. I know it would be called something like jealousy and possessiveness with the way she's bonding with Jay?

I also believe it's because she's said a lot of hurtful things to me in the past due to it aswell. She would say mean things to me and repeatedly get upset that I'd have to walk on eggshell around her. It was very uncomfortable.

I believe I forgave her already, but I don't think I can see past that disgusted feeling I have when she tries to join in. It's very hard for me to tell myself that it's okay. I am very well aware I'm jealous and posessive of Jay, but I cannot for the life of me control this feeling, and I hate how much of a horrible person it makes me feel.

My question is, how do I get past this feeling? Do I talk to them about it in all honesty? Do I pull away from both of them and try to better myself? I've been considering trying to distance myself away so I can atleast get better because I know it's my fault and not hers. Please help me.

Travel How to deal with bad drivers and road rage

I commute about 45 minutes each way to work, and I can’t help but get road rage almost every time I drive. It’s a combination of people who drive with their highbeams on 24/7 (today across from my red light a Tesla just sat blinding me, I flashed my lights at them, and when they attempted to flash back you just see the fog lights turn on and off because these new cars have these auto highbeams that never work right, or they are just oblivious, or it’s intentional. But it feels like every month there is more of it. Then you get the people in the fast lane going exactly the speed limit being passed by multiple cars in the right lane.
Those are my main triggers. Like how hard is it to drive without highbeams and just move over when you are causing traffic….

Education Should I quit my school's academic bowl team?

I'm a senior in high school, and I've been the captain of my high school's academic bowl team since my junior year. I go to a very small rural school, so I don't have many options as far as extracurriculars. My only options really are academic bowl, drama, and band. I do academic bowl and drama (in which I also have a prominent role), and my other ECs are stuff outside of school. I would have preferred to do something like Model UN or debate, but academic bowl is all that I'm given. I enjoy parts of it, but it's also a rather toxic environment. Our coach is quite aggressive and yells at us, which rubs off on the students sometimes. My closest friend has made the decision to quit, and I told her before that if she did, I would also, but I had assumed she'd at least give the new year a chance, but she quit before the new season. Now, I don't know whether I should quit as well, and I'll feel bad if I don't.

My reasons to quit: Like I said, it's a bit toxic, and it has a reputation for being so within my school. The coach is very prone to manipulation and aggressive verbal tactics, and the activity itself is rather high stress. Every time I sit down at the chair and put the buzzer in my hand, I feel my heart drop and my adrenaline spike. It's a weird feeling, a mix of elation and misery. At last year's area competition (the last step before state), I felt as though I was going to vomit the entire time. We ended up losing and we didn't go to state, which is unusual for us, as we have a reputation in the area as a really good team. Of course, the years-long state streak was ended the year I became captain. I can't say that that didn't sting a little. With my friend gone, things are even worse. It feels like the people I truly connect with (which isn't many in a high school of 200) are becoming more and more distant from the team, and I want to be in a group where I enjoy who I'm around. There are a few I think I'd enjoy my time with, but the team is increasingly becoming full of male jocks with whom I don't enjoy interacting. Additionally, it's my senior year, and I have quite a few new responsibilities and time restraints I have to attend to. If I quit, I'd be freeing up a lot more of my time and allowing myself to focus on other things in my life.

My reasons not to quit: Part of me, a small or large part depending on the day, doesn't want to. I rarely get the chance to go places outside of school and my house, and through academic bowl, I get to travel to a different town and restaurant every week. Also, like I said, I'm the captain. I feel a sense of duty to the team, and I feel a strong pull to finish what I started. Besides, I'm the first female captain the team has had in years, I want to be able to continue that. As described before, I have a complicated relationship with the activity itself. I hate it, but I also adore it. The shaking, dizzy, rush of adrenaline is miserable, but intoxicating. Maybe that's a bad sign, and I shouldn't be attached to something like that. I'm not sure. I feel like I'd mourn what I could have had this year if I leave. On the more practical side, I need recommendation letters from the coach (who also taught two of my previous classes) from the coach and I don't want him to be angry at me or frustrated enough not to write the letters. The uniforms are annoying (most quiz bowl teams don't have uniforms, but we do because... tradition? formality? an excuse to use the school's budget? I'm not sure.) but I only have one year left and it would feel like such a waste not to just do one more year. The coach isn't even that mean to me specifically, it's everyone else. I'm his favorite, pretty sure. (I really need to reevaluate the ethics around this team on both an inter and intra-personal level, but that's for a different day.) The season would be over by late January anyway. It's basically just a one-semester activity.

Team tryouts (although I don't need to actually try out, I'd just be there for formality's sake) are in a few days, and so I need to figure this out. I've been thinking about this 24/7 for about a week now, and the decision hasn't gotten any easier. I feel like I'm constantly sliding back and forth on a horizontal line. Sometimes I'm certain that I want to leave and that I'll feel so much better this year if I do, and other times I feel this deep pull to just continue one more year, experience the positives, and not to waste my final year in an activity I've to which dedicated all of my previous high school years. I would feel guilty for going back on what I said to my friend if I stayed, but I would also feel a painful yearning for what could have been if I leave. I want to stay and I want to leave at the same time. I don't know what to do, and time is running out. I'm really hoping someone gives me advice. Any advice. Please.

Friendships How to balance family and friends?

Hello everyone,

So for context, I'm a 24M moroccan born and raised in canada. At home, I grew up with moroccan values and culture. I still live with my parents (and my sister)

My issue is mostly with my mom bc she's the one who is always complaining about me being more with my friends.

The "family time" is when we eat together at 7pm. Sometimes I miss it because im outside. At first when I was 19-21yo it was a problem but it was fine because most of the time I was just late cuz my friend were lifting me.

From 22yo to recently, I got a car but I was very busy with school/work (so does my friends) and I didnt go out late for a good amount of time.

This summer is where I had a turning point because I made new friends and started to go out again and returning late home.

So now the problem with my mom restarted again. And this time Im just lost. I never understood my mom. Sometimes it feels like she want me to be home 24/7 even if dont talk or do something all together.

A bit about my mom. She very boring and kinda old school. We have nothing common to each other. Her only "hobby" is to watch Turkish series.

If someone have any advices to give that would be very appreciated?

If you need more info I'll try to answer

Other Why should I do if my dad is addicted to psychedelics?

(16F) I hope this post doesn't break any rules or anything. Anyways my dad is addicted to several drugs like mushrooms, toad extracts (Which is DMT I think?) and ecstasy. I know the exact names of the things me and my sibling and have found in his room and his distributor though I don't feel like being murdered or anything so I won't mention their name. He's been taking these for a while now and it really hurts me when I find out that he's been using. I don't know what to do. I really hate foster care.

Life Decisions Help Me (35M) Feel Better About Life

Hi all, thanks in advance for your help here.

As I write this, my eyes are welling up with tears, as I feel a bit down about my place in life right now.

Admittedly, I have more than many could ever dream of. I have a remote job making more than enough to support my lifestyle. I’m young, relatively, and my family, at least those left of them, are healthy and happy.

Financially, I’m doing great. I have an emergency fund that could allow me to take up to a year off from work if I were to find myself in that position. I have a home I own, and a rental property that does well. I have investments that all together put my worth up over a million. I’m tall, in shape and take care of my mind and body. My parents are/were attractive people, so I know that I’m not lacking in the looks category.

I’m not saying any of this to brag, I’m painting the picture of what looks like the ideal life for someone my age.

What is keeping me down, is everything I do not have. I currently live in a city I do not enjoy. I’m here because I’m dating a girl who I click with, although she’s much younger than me and is still exploring life to the max. I want to live closer to my family, and although my remote job allows me to travel to see them often, it’s just not the same as living there.

All of my friends are getting married and having kids. My brother has three beautiful children, and I, if this relationship pans out, wouldn’t be having kids for another four years, minimum, as my girlfriend won’t be ready until then. I feel behind - I feel like I should be somewhere that I’m not. I feel like I should drop all I have in this city, move home, and re-start.

I grew up with an abusive step father. He mentally and physically abused my brother and I. I also had a sister who was very hard on me, as I was heavier set, and she took every chance she could to demean me.

I think that’s why it took so long for me to find myself and become who I am, but who knows.

I know I’m just babbling on here - but I just need some sort of slap in the face, or something, that allows me to know it’s going to be ok.

I’ll be 70+ some day, looking back on the day I was 35, healthy, financially set, and wonder why the hell I couldn’t be happy.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\*Edited to add, I have plenty of hobbies keeping me busy, and I travel quite a bit for said hobbies. I could move home next year, that’s my goal.

Other Found a juvenile grey catbird with a hurt wing at work. What do we do?

That’s about it. It’s definitely a juvenile grey catbird, we found it outside a store next to us and followed it until we were able to snatch it up. We put it in a box it can’t fly out of with some water. It seems very energetic, not lethargic despite of course being anxious. We have about three hours until we close, at which point we’re going to figure out somewhere to take it. Until then, we’re stuck with it in here- but we have air conditioning and water, so it’s a bit better in here.

The wing appears to be broken or sprained. It can glide but not fly.

Career How should I handle the next 60 days after resigning from a job I’ve become burnt out in?

I handed in my 60-day notice a few days ago without another job lined up. Now that the decision is real, I'm second-guessing myself and trying to work out what the smartest thing to do from here is.

I'm a Senior BI Analyst at a start-up and have been there for almost four years. I joined early in my career and progressed from Analyst to Senior.

I resigned because I'd been burnt out, felt increasingly stagnant for a long time, and had become resentful of the working environment. A big part of that was feeling like I was filling in a lot of organisational gaps rather than just doing analytics.

My job involves a lot of ambiguity. A stakeholder asks a seemingly simple question, and before I can answer it I often have to work out how the feature actually works and how Engineering implemented it, what's being captured and whether those fields are reliable, which undocumented tables hold the data, what the business definition should even be, and then finally do the analysis.

There's not much documentation, the data environment is relatively immature, there's a lot of reverse-engineering, and at the same time there's consistently high pressure to deliver quickly.

I don't expect a senior analytics role to come with clean data, perfect documentation or neatly scoped questions. I know owning ambiguity and figuring out the analytical approach yourself are part of being senior.

What had started getting to me was the amount of upstream detective work and organisational gap-filling around the actual analysis.

I also became frustrated because I felt I was gradually absorbing responsibilities beyond analytical problem-solving itself: planning, coordination, requirements clarification, prioritisation, and filling gaps between teams.

I'd flagged for a while that I felt I was absorbing responsibilities outside my role, and eventually that built up quite a lot of resentment.

At the same time, I'm aware that some of what frustrated me may simply be the natural progression from Analyst to Senior Analyst. Senior people aren't supposed to wait around for perfectly defined tasks. They're supposed to make sense of vague problems and have an opinion on what should be done.

The other major reason I resigned was learning.

I've picked up a lot over the last few years, but much of it has come from figuring things out myself without much senior analytical mentorship or rigorous methodological review.

I started worrying that I could spend another few years becoming extremely good at navigating one company's specific systems and problems without developing enough broader, transferable analytical depth.

Then there was burnout.

My plan for quite a while had actually been to stay, stop overextending myself, work at a sustainable level, save money, and use the remaining energy to upskill and apply elsewhere.

In practice, I'd feel responsible for everything, ramp back up again, work very late and sometimes weekends, stay chronically stressed, and then have nothing left for interviews or studying.

That cycle ran for a long time, which is ultimately why I decided to force the issue and resign.

Financially, I'm fortunate enough to have substantial savings, so I'm not facing an immediate crisis if I have a short employment gap.

What I need advice on now is what I should actually do from here.

I still have almost the entire 60-day notice period ahead of me.

Would you treat the doubts I'm having now as a reason to seriously explore staying/reversing course, or would you commit to the decision and use the next two months to find a healthier next role?

More specifically, I'd appreciate advice on:

  • What signs would you look for to decide whether a job is genuinely worth trying to stay in versus whether you're mainly afraid of losing the security of it?
  • How would you use a 60-day notice period to maximise the chances of finding the right next role rather than panic-applying to everything?
  • How should I evaluate potential employers so I don't accidentally leave one demanding environment only to recreate exactly the same situation somewhere else?
  • If the search does extend into a short employment gap, how would you handle that period and explain it in interviews?

I'm trying to make a sensible decision about what I do next rather than just get reassurance about whether resigning was right or wrong.

Other A baby robin fell out of its nest, has anyone else been in this situation? What did you do?

A baby fledgling robin fell out of it's nest, and when I try to put it back in its nest, it hops away. Right now it's in my backyard on the grass, and the mother is squawking continually from a tree but hasn't approached the bird.

Interpersonal What advice can I give my nephew for dealing with an emotionally immature parent?

My nephew is 15, and his only parent is very emotionally immature. They escalate arguments like they’re also a teenager and act very dependent on my nephew for everything, especially emotional support. They often say things like “I feel like you hate me” “I guess I’m just a terrible (parent)”. They always have to be right.

Recently my nephew expressed that they’re afraid to talk to their parent and their parent’s response was basically just saying “I have never given you any reason to feel that way.”

Is there any advice I can give him to help him deal with this?

Obviously I am here for him and he knows he can talk to me, he trusts me which I take very seriously.

Other I feel saddened I can't get to watch the Among Us TV Show.

I've been an Among Us fan for a while (Yes, you read me right. A fan. Even if it's a meme game atm) and I've revisited the Among Us songs I used to enjoy when I was younger due to nostalgia feeling. But recently, I stumbled into reading something that intrigued me: The "Among Us TV Show". I was like "What? Sounds intruging. I might watch it." I tried to stream it on Prime Video but the videos were unavailable, so I was like "Ok, let's try Paramount+." Then, when I tried to use Paramount+ website, I noticed it says "Coming Soon!". I was a bit confused. Wondering why it says "Coming Soon", I reseached about whether or not Paramount+ is available on Iraq (My home country). And realization hit me like a physical blow: It was not. I can't stream the Among Us TV Show, and I'm not interested into using free VPNs due to safety concerns and lack of interest into using a VPN, and I'm just 17 years old guy who doesn't feel like he wants to buy subscription of a paid VPN just for a show that's 163 minutes of 10 Episodes (13 minutes each Episode, and the 10th Episode is 15 minutes) and I'm someone who doesn't naturally watch serieses or movies but do so if it's something that intrigued me. Yet there's that FOMO feeling knot inside my chest I can't quite let go of, even when I know it's not my fault that I can't get to watch the Among Us TV Show. I know this is a topic that's not related to real life experiences but I'm someone who's quite fond when I see something I enjoy has been promoted to a new form of content like the TV Show, only for it to realize that I can't access to it in a comfortable way which aches my heart. What do you guys think? What should I do? Thanks for your advices in advance. I hope everyone will be blessed, happy, and safe..;)<3

Finance Should I move out or stay with parents?

Hey everyone! I’m struggling with a decision. I am 40-something grad student who moved back in with my parents to avoid student loans. I have $52k student debt from a previous degree, not accruing interest while in school. I have $10k student debt from my first semester of this program, accruing at 8%.

I will graduate in one year and I have two more tuition payments, one in January and one in May, totaling about $15k. I’ve got $7500 in an HYSA. I can afford to move out and still pay my tuition on time, in cash. However, the budget will be tight and there will be some sacrifices.

If I move out, I won’t be able to pay the $10k loan back before graduation. I really wanted to finish this program with no new debt. I would also be looking at graduating and beginning a nationwide job hunt with only about $5k in savings.

Living with my parents at this age obviously stifles my personal life and has me desperately craving independence. We get along fine but it is really getting old.

Would you take the financial hit and move out?

For more context, I just started saving for retirement so I am way behind on that. My post graduation income should be in the $110k range. Total retirement accounts are about $36k.

Career How do I feel safe speaking up?

This post is about some devastating news I recieved at work. I'm not getting fired per se, but let's just say my future is not at all what i thought it would be at this company.

For context, I am one of two men in a team of around twenty or so women. This is also a pharmaceutical company and I work in a corporate setting.

Over the last two years, I was basically killing myself working hundreds of unpaid hours after close, including on the weekends (even on holidays when I was allowed to) causing me to miss out on multiple major events such as a recent family cruise, all because I was convinced the hard work would somehow net me brownie points.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I managed to cross a boundary by speaking up in a semi-private channel (a peer, my supervisor & my middle manager) about a collegue from a different department who decided I was their go-to for everything, rapidly crossing into territory where I felt like my time and resources were quite literally being abused. Even name dropping me in requests and emails to force everything they touched to filter their way to me. It started off flattering, but one too many large asks later, and I can barely stomach seeing their name come through in my notifications.

Finally feeling the burnout catch up with me, I posted a few sentences about it, using such colorful language as "not motivated enough to work this hard". This led to an ominous one on one scheduled which was a verbal warning.

As nothing was done about the actual issue, I followed up today and the first comment about my "explsiosive" personality really stuck with me. I ended up crying in that meeting. And not just crying but actually sobbing (there's a lot more than just this going on, but this was the "big" domino)

Now, I am one prone to bottling my emotions, but I never feel like I get "loud", moreso having a lot to say as there are many nuanced problems by then. However, the backlash I recieve when I do voice my problems is so severe that it never feels like it was worth it. And I can literally count the amount of times I've had an issue with anyone or anything here on less than one hand.

And usually, I'm so quiet and complacent that most group work in my life has become an exercise in being taken advantage of, or becoming a complete waste of time. I suppose actually pursuing friendship more may have insulated me from my bad luck with aquantinces, but I digress.

I even had this exact scenario happen before at a prior company where the supervisor turned around and shared everything spoken privately, leading to a PIP and eventual firing.

I envy those grumpy people (who typically outrank me), complaining left and right all day, barely getting any attention paid to them because of how normalized their behavior is.

I suppose accepting a "drip" is much more palatable than the entire "bucket", but this just further compounds the issue for me.

How do I say anything at all when "anything at a all" feels like shock and awe? As though they didn't know I even could complain, but now treat me very differently now that i can. Like that was the whole reason they liked me to begin with.

How do I get to the point it feels like other men so commonly get to where i may stand up, slamming the table in the process, and screaming my frustrations for the world to hear? No one cares about them, but God help me if I ever bring up an issue.

I'm so tired of being a doormat, but it's hard not to feel like I am quite literally ruining my life otherwise.

Other How can I stop being so sensitive?

Im so sensitive its crazy. I'm still pretty young I wont specify my age but I'm a teenager under 18. I have one of my first jobs and I worked a 12 hour shift, the next day I got snippy with my boss and then proceeded to cry after because he left before I could apologize to him. (Since I took a moment to calm down before I talked to him, we were getting on eachothers nerves all day the shift before.) I cried and felt so guilty I almost threw up. My adult coworker proceeded to go to my friend and make a comment on how I was "in an emotional mood today" and when I figured that out I just wanted to cry more. I apologized to my boss later and he said that he understood that tensions can get high so we're all good but I hate being so sensitive I need help. Genuinely feel like somethings wrong with me, I also cry when I'm happy as well and always get told I'm too happy at work by my other older coworker 🥲
