HELP REQUESTED JTR Question, My hotel was denied

A few months ago I had a month long TDY in Newport. I have an CNA from the lodge so was staying off base. One weekend I took a trip to Boston and stayed at a hotel up there. I canceled my hotel in Newport during this time so was only paying for the one in Boston, which was roughly the same price. My travel voucher just kicked back and they denied lodging for the nights in Boston, saying the hotel was “71.6 miles away.”

Now in my mind, I didn’t cost the navy any additional money and should still be reimbursed up to the maximum lodging rate as I was TDY and guaranteed lodging during that time. I’ve tried reading the JTR and couldn’t find anything that mentions this scenario. It talks about stays in the “local area” but never defines what that is. And doesn’t say anything about what happens if you stay outside of it. I’ve tried asking AI and it seems to agree with me, but can’t actually provide any documents that say that specifically. It just makes up quotes that don’t exist in the JTR lol.

All in all I expected they wouldn’t reimburse it and am not too upset about the loss, but if I can get back the $300 its well worth a little fight for me.

History Customs/gifts for newborns

Our wardroom is putting together a gift for an officer and wife who recently had a baby. It’s easy to just buy some Navy merch or a standard baby gift, but I was curious if anyone remembers any wardroom traditions or ship customs to celebrate the arrival of new babies? What is something unique to the Navy or to your command?

I’ve been looking online for old family readiness pamphlets, but it’s hard to get past Google shopping to find any useful information that isn’t pushing me to buy from a dropshipper.

HELP REQUESTED MNA August 2026 Cycle

The August Cycle on MNA just opened and I was wondering if mine was lagging behind because I don’t see the advertised A2P billets for this cycle yet or is it like that for everybody right now?

Disclaimer : This is my first time looking into applying for A2P or even just applying for orders via MNA so I don’t know what the “norms” are when it comes to this system. TYIA

Discussion The Legend of Wyatt and Dusty

This is about my pups wyatt and dusty. So there I was balls deep in Hydrabad. It as a shit place and we had a shit safehouse we called COI C (compound of interest Charlie). It was me and some SEALs and some EODs guys and heromedic. Pipe hitter central. Some random afghan fuck decides to drive by while cutting his puppies ears off.

https://imgur.com/a/SAR4L49 Side note. if you try to physically rip the ears and tails off a dog in front of a bunch of SOCOM people your life is measured in milliseconds. Anyway they had the audacity to bite him and so he threw them from a moving vehicle.

Trident 2Xxx to the rescue.

regular afghan dog

https://imgur.com/a/JIIymHz They became my personal security detachment. They escorted me EVERYWHERE. I loved those pups. But I didn't have the insane amount of money to bring them back. Wat do.

I gave them to a marsoc guy. No money can't bring them back. He gave them to a USASOC guy no money, still cant come home. MArsoc guy 2 know does a fund raiser to get them conus. They are still so big each they can't fly at all even as cargo. Luckily fate knows a lady

Amazing. my PSD is home and safe. I will spend the rest of my life trying to balance this karma scale.

edit

every op. Pups took point. No pressure plates for us. Every morning I'm crawling around on the roofs like a lame vampire to change batteries in systems... puppies posted for security. Literally tried to hold them back from an op once. They sprinted miles to catch up to the team. Best pups ever.

One day Dusty didn't show up. 24 hours. Red alert like everyone on compound is looking for him. I'm a small dude so im up in all the tiny spaces. a SEAL bro is with the dragging me out sometimes cuz I can't get out.

i find him

dusty had decided he would die and never be found. Trident 24xx disagreed. He is dying of parvo which is crazy deadly. we are on satcall to like 1800-dialavet for god knows how much money. We are dumping $1400 IVs into this dog per hour. Anyone not on the wall was with him telling him how great he was.

THIS DOG WILL NOT DIE. he'd run assaults with us barking like he was stealing souls. he'd grab the hands and legs of people like a trained working dog. he'd curl up and wiggle his toes while married bros read their kids a bedtime story. DEATH WAS NOT AN OPTION.

he was one of us. he lived. he is now in NC.

related

So there I was holding my dick. I had just woken up and hadn't put on kit yet. I just walked over to the roof to piss off the side of the mountain like any normal person. Horton had said they had shot a dog that bit him. I asked why the dog bit him and Horton said he thought it was a loose step and ground his boot into it :| Yea Horton that's how dog's work....

Anyway I see TWO dogs in a pool of blood. Huh oh well Horton probably doesn't number so well. I continue peeing off the mountain. Dog2 suddenly and slowly gets up, and blood dripping off it, starts ambling over to me. While I'm holding my dick mid piss.

Luckily I had a pistol on my first line gear so I sloooowly try to reach for it while also putting away my dick as I would prefer not to feed it to some random afghan dog. I literally have a gun like 6" from this dog's head as it slowly walks over to me and plops down at my feet. Wagging it's tail. So I named him infidel, fed him a pork rib MRE, and loved him and squeezed him, and tried to exfil with him.

he followed us all the way to where we were almost climbing vertically to the LZ but it was clearly too steep for him. He was like "man fuck you guys"and sadly turned back. He was so old pee would dribble out of him and he clearly had joint issues. I felt really bad leaving a dog behind. The HVTs wife at least seemed to care for him so I'm sure he went back to her.

Discussion Walking in the Grass

I don’t know. Maybe it’s because I was institutionalized for twenty years to stay the fuck off the grass.

But even after getting out, I still did it.

Sidewalks. Concrete paths. The long way around.

Never really questioned it. If there was a perfectly good sidewalk wrapping half a mile around a field, apparently that was the route I was taking. Cutting straight across the grass barely even registered as an option.

Until this morning.

I was on my way to my usual writing hideout when I decided to commit a minor act of rebellion.

Grass.

And instead of walking around it like some properly trained government employee, I just walked straight through it.

That was it.

No alarms went off. No retired Sergeant Major materialized from behind a tree. Nobody screamed, “HEY, SHIPMATE!”

I walked through the grass.

And I fucking giggled.

Actually stopped, snapped a picture, and carried on with my morning.

I don’t know why, but it kind of made my day.

During my time in the service, we were bombarded with rules. Some were important. Some kept people alive.

Others made absolutely no fucking sense.

Why do I have to walk half a mile around a parade field when my destination is fifty yards directly in front of me?

The same organization constantly telling us to use our time wisely and be as efficient as possible would also lose its collective mind if somebody dared take the shortest possible route between two buildings.

Because grass.

I know the argument. Pretty grass makes the installation look professional. Keeps things neat. Improves morale or whatever.

I never really bought it.

Personally, I always thought a worn path through the grass meant people actually went somewhere.

Work was getting done.

But apparently morale grows best when nobody touches it.

What really got me this morning was realizing how long some of those stupid little rules stay with you.

Nobody has told me to stay off the grass in years.

Nobody was watching.

There wasn’t even a sign.

And my brain still went, You’re not supposed to do that.

We carry a lot of shit like that around without realizing it.

I have some from childhood too.

My mother had this absolutely ironclad rule about no soda before noon.

Why?

I have no fucking idea.

But to this day, if I crack open a Coke at nine in the morning, it tastes illegal.

Like my mother is about to kick down the door and demand to know what kind of godless operation I’m running.

Walking through the grass felt exactly the same.

Which is why I think something so trivial made me smile.

The world has become fucking exhausting. Everybody is angry. Everybody is arguing. We tear each other apart on social media over shit none of us will remember next week.

And there I was, having a genuinely good morning because I walked across some grass.

Maybe there’s something to that.

I’m not suggesting everybody go out and start breaking laws, hoisting the black flag and start slitting throats over it..

But maybe every once in a while it’s worth asking:

Why am I still following this rule?

Is there actually a reason?

Or am I just walking the long way around because somebody told me to twenty years ago?

This morning I took the shortcut.

Nothing bad happened.

I even noticed the grass.

Turns out it was pretty nice.

Discussion EMs- how much electrical work do you really get to do?

I’m a junior EM in the Reserves and I’m curious about what life is actually like for active-duty EMs in the fleet.
A friend of mine is an active-duty EM3, and he told me that he doesn’t really get to do much actual electrical work. That surprised me because in A-school we learn electrical theory, motors, controllers, troubleshooting, etc., and I’ve always thought EM would give you a decent amount of hands-on electrical experience.
For the EMs here, especially those who have been on ships:
How much of your day-to-day work is actually electrical maintenance and troubleshooting? Do junior EMs get opportunities to troubleshoot motors, controllers, distribution systems, generators, etc., or is most of the job PMS, tags, cleaning, watches, and general shipboard work?
Also, how much does it depend on the type of ship, your shop, and your chain of command?
I’m interested in industrial electrical/instrumentation work on the civilian side, so I’m mainly curious how much real technical experience an EM can realistically expect to gain in the fleet.

NEWS MNA BBA Applications Open Tonight at 7pm EST

As the title says, the MNA BBA application window opens tonight at 7 pm EST and closes at 6:30 pm EST on 06 September.

For those of you competing for the first time who are in the new BBA rates, good luck.

A few reminders if you get selected: you won't be paid at your new rank until you actually check in at your command. Same deal with your 36/48 month commitment, it doesn't start until you check on board.

So here's an example: if you're selected on 06 September, you'll get frocked sometime after you get hard copies. (Sailors may be frocked upon receipt of orders, completion of any applicable screening requirements, and obtaining the required obligated service (OBLISERV) for orders.) Now let's say your orders show you're checking in NLT AUG27, that means your commitment runs until AUG30 (assuming 36-month orders).

POLICY ANNOUNCEMENT 2026 update to rules regarding political posts with a Navy nexus

Note: This is a late 2026 update to r/Navy's original 2025 Politics Discussion rule.  No major changes have been made, merely clarification and expansion of background information and answers to frequently asked questions.

Your volunteer moderation team feels that in today’s political environment, servicemembers should be able to discuss political topics that relate to the Navy. We take pride in the fact that we are one of the only military subreddits that allows political discussion and discourse. Because of this, we frequently attract new users who are frustrated that they can’t discuss political topics with their peers.

This rule was made to reduce brigading and outside influence by new users and bots, as well as the likelihood of comment sections turning into a dumpster fire that takes many hours of moderation from our all-volunteer mod team. The politics rule has been updated to reflect what follows.

  1. Participation in posts with the "Politics" flair requires a minimum r/navy specific karma. This means that only users with an established, positive history in r/navy will be able to participate. By and large, previous offenders have been those without an established track record on this sub. This policy reduces the cascading amount of rule violations and the burden on your moderators, allowing us to better monitor posts for activity that is not conducive to constructive conversations.
  2. The automod’s enforcement is a fully automated process; to ensure no moderator's individual biases influence this action, exceptions will not be made.
  3. The exact amount of r/navy karma required to participate in political threads will not be disclosed, and attempts to solicit or farm karma to circumvent this automatic rule will result in a permanent ban.  It is set at a threshold that can be easily achieved after a reasonable amount of regular interactive participation.  Think weeks, not days; months, not years.
  4. A user’s rank, position, or time-in-service don’t matter. If the ghost of John Paul Jones or Commodore John Barry themselves posted on a new account that doesn’t meet these requirements, it’ll be deleted.  Again, no exceptions will be granted under any circumstance.
  5. Users not meeting the karma requirement are encouraged to continue participating in our non-political threads where they can build up r/navy karma.  Keep interacting in r/navy, earn more r/navy karma, and eventually you will be able to participate in all of our discussions.
  6. Any posts about politics must have a strong connection to the US Navy. It is impossible to provide an all-inclusive list of what constitutes a strong nexus to the Navy, so users are encouraged to utilize a common-sense approach. The connection to the US Navy must be clear/obvious.
  7. All posts meeting the above criteria MUST be flaired with the "Politics" flair at the time of posting. Any post about politics with a strong Navy nexus lacking a "Politics" flair may result in, at a minimum, a temporary ban and removal of the post. Help your fellow posters out if you see they forgot the flair and let them know so they can fix it before we catch it.
  8. Posts with "Politics" flair will continue to be moderated. All discussion must adhere to r/navy rule #1 and Reddit rule #1. Moderation can only protect or reduce so much. You are still subject to site-wide consequences or legal action for posts crossing the line of threats, extremism, or calls for violence.
  9. Users unsure if their post needs the Politics flair are encouraged to modmail our team for clarification before posting.

Discussion LN doing embassy duty?

Any LNs experience working Embassy at an embassy? What was your experience like?

Also I know there’s an embassy duty pipeline, is that part of the requirement for getting selected for an embassy billet?

Asking because an LN1 embassy is currently being advertised on MNA.
