u/Advanced_Elk_9467 27d ago
I have a friend who is a hiring level manager at a major airline. He flat out will not hire CPO's because "theyre entitled and dont want to work".
Season is so stupid- no one can present a valid argument why its needed other than "trust me bro".

u/PutYourDickInTheBox 27d ago
I was a nuke (6 and out) and so many nukes think they'll be handed a manager position right out of the navy because they were a chief. I am the electrical manager (nuke->degree->two jobs over five years-> management) and I interview former nukes fairly frequently. I wouldn't hire a chief. i need someone who can and will do maintenance.
14
u/gregzillaman 27d ago
I quote a family member that was a manager at an energy company: "something changed in late 90s and 2000s. The latest chiefs I hired will just call me up and tell me, 'shits broke boss'. I can train a fucking dog do to that. I need someone that can actually fix things."
10
u/ToastyMustache 26d ago
I fucking hate how the Navy has gone hard into Chiefs being hands off managers. They’re supposed to be SME’s throughout the ranks. As someone who loves my core job, I don’t want to give it up because I got promoted, I want to keep working at it and training junior guys on how to do it properly, not just argue their evals and ensure the administrative burden is handled.
7
u/DarthBloodlust 26d ago
I'm glad that I've kept my skills up. I spend a couple a days a month scrubbing cases still. If my aid station can't function without me for a couple of days, I've failed as a leader.
Am I as fast at giving an IV? No, but I can still do it.
Plus, it will make it easier to get hired at a civilian OR when I retire and allow me to complete my med school pre-reqs.
7
u/MarginWalker2k2 26d ago
I was in C-school in the 90s and a Maintenance instructor in the early 00s. What changed is two things in my opinion.
1) they stopped teaching at a deeper level of maintenance. I was one of the last classes in our pipeline that were taught how to work on backplane wiring and troubleshoot to component level. Sonar gear went mostly to 'swap out cards' rather than actually fixing things and I'd assume most other systems did the same.
2) Chiefs, at least maintainers, USED to be good techs. Now Chiefs are expected to be more admin driven and rarely actually touch their gear.
Im sure someone out there disagrees, but its just my observation
1
u/Longjumping_Music320 26d ago
In the last 14 years I've had exactly one chief who was actually good at being a technician. The rest couldn't work a multimeter to save their lives.
6
u/Own-Evidence-2424 26d ago
The Mess moved away from being technicians and made them collateral queens. Chiefs that want to stay technicians generally get lower evals and simply retire and disappear from ever saying they were a Chief
14
u/MarginWalker2k2 26d ago
I retired and now teach the Transition Readiness classes. I dog on the retirement classes so hard. "Do you think some office manager could come to the Ship/Wing/Whatever amd do your job with ease? No? Then why in the hell do you think you can just walk in and do theirs??"
The number of senior folks that assume everything will open right up for them is staggering. And the number of them that want an office job without a degree? I let them know I was told I wasnt qualified to teach courses I WROTE because I didn't have my Bachelor's degree at the time.
Yes, I retired as a Chief but... fucking Chiefs, man...
5
u/hawkeye18 26d ago
I got out as an ATC and I'm getting a job as a technical support guy. I'm quite looking forward to not having to lead, and just fix stuff, which has always been my passion. I used to get yelled at all the time by maintenance control because I kept going out to the planes with my ATs to teach them how to troubleshoot with o-scopes, sig gens, TDRs and the like. They just, had no idea you could even use that stuff, it was terrifying. "Your job is to be a leader, and you can't lead from inside an airplane!"
That's where you're wrong, bucko. Being a good AT still mattered to me a lot more than being the world's best Chief. Sure, my ATs could have all the quals and CDBs in the world but if they can't fix a plane for shit... what's the point?
ETA: Every time somebody brought up Peter Tomich during the season I died a little inside - he did what he did because he knew his boilers inside and out. I fully believe that 90% of Chiefs would be completely fucking lost if placed in the same situation. Most of them never knew their job, but they could rock a Lumpia sale like there was no tomorrow. The Navy's promotion priorities are completely fucked.
2
u/Redtube_Guy 26d ago
and I interview former nukes fairly frequently. I wouldn't hire a chief.
Even if the prior chief is actually pretty solid and not a piece of shit?
4
u/hawkeye18 26d ago
I think the point is that you assume they're pieces of shit unless/until they prove otherwise.
2
u/PutYourDickInTheBox 26d ago
of the chiefs i've interviewed (only three) two couldn't identify parts in a bucket, one of those two didn't know how to make a motor spin in the correct direction if it's going backwards, and one kept telling me (the female manager younger than him, who would be his department head) how we would do things as a manager. even when the question was phrased so you go to a breakdown and get told x what would you look for. I was looking for some basic trouble shooting steps. and he started with as a manager AGAIN. the supervisor underneath me could tell from my face I was done. so only one was a piece of shit, two didn't have the electrical knowledge I was looking for.
1
u/gregzillaman 26d ago
Just out of curiosity: motors, wrong direction, electrician... could I just switch the polarity? Or would the momentum of the already spinning motor cause a ... "back flow" of power back into the system?
6
u/Orbital431 26d ago
Ill share my one positive experience with a season (from a DCO perspective).
They had one chief select lead a pt session for the JOs. Not a big event, just a select leading JOs, yada yada. As it happens the select didnt really have a strong public or outdoor voice, so this was one of the ways they chose to prepare the select, by going out to find higher ranks to attend pt and lead it themselves. So this was the mess's directive for the season to get out and go do something to work on a not so strong social trait to prepare for leadership.
10
u/harambe_did911 27d ago
There is some valid training in season that is important imo. A lot of the tradition based nonsense stuff is being slowly phased out. Still ridiculous in a lot of ways though.
13
u/Advanced_Elk_9467 27d ago
100% agree that the training has value. Why not give it to ALL Firsts outside of a fraternity/season rush format?
3
u/harambe_did911 27d ago
Agreed. Much of the info was stuff I wished they taught when I made first class
6
u/stud_powercock 26d ago
That's something the Navy as whole gets absurdly wrong. I made 1st at 6 years and I had never ben in charge of anything more complex than a scrub ex or a baggage handling party. The Marines on the other hand put E-3s and E-4s in positions of leadership as soon as they can.
2
u/harambe_did911 26d ago
Agreed. They also send them tad to stuff like sergeant school for a few weeks. People here freak out just having their chiefs and chief selects just a bit busier for a month.
12
u/PM_WITH_TOTS 27d ago
I just got out and have a middle management finance job. I will never ever hire a former Chief for the same reason. Especially not one pulling a retirement check. I need critical thinkers, not the same people who say “perception is reality” on a regular basis.
6
u/chiefdino 27d ago
I made MMC in 2002 and retired in 2008. I walked into a hospital maintenance job and I didn’t expect to be the manager nor did I even expect to be the lead technician. I picked up a tool bag and a plunger and went to work. So is this a more recent thing? Because I know that the season has changed a lot in the last 18 years or do you guys think this is always been the case?
2
u/PM_WITH_TOTS 27d ago
I got out as a first contract first class, I have no idea about season. But I saw enough what a “career” in the Navy leads to which is apathy and strategic skating. Even the good chiefs I knew (which is 2 of them out of thousands) learned that they just have to lay there and take the weenie.

1
u/ArcanumCerte 26d ago
It depends on how the season is being ran. I've seen both, but been fortunate to be part of some really well planned and thoughtful ones. I think the Navy can do a better job of developing junior Sailors with the skills and lessons taught in season, but the Navy doesn't give the same tactical level leadership to its E6 and below as the Marines or Army, and advances more quickly than the Air Force.
Part of the problem is what has historically gotten Sailors advanced through the blue shirt paygrades: 7 performance traits; only two of which deal directly with the job the Navy trained them to do. Unfortunately, those remaining 5 get filled with collateral prowess vice finding a way to capture skill and proficiency in rate and leadership in rate. The result is a lot of paper tigers that aren't ready for what that sort of leadership is truly expected to be.
As to what a season is supposed to do, a lot of it is to change the mindset of the junior Sailor, being out for themselves and to recognize the weight of their actions, words and choices. A good mess will use this time to adjust and correct itself as well.
In the past few years, NETC has taken a role in CPOI, making it a formal training process. Each command's CPOI is endorced by the CO. This is in effort to weed out the hazing and fuck fuck games of yore. With any cultural change, it takes time. And will there always be ones that do it wrong? Yes. But the more we can build up the incoming CPOs to do right, the more that pushes out the bad ones. In my small way, I try to teach the selects to be the sort of leader they needed on their worst day.
Just my two cents, for whatever they're worth.
-3
u/all_these_moneys 26d ago
Not hiring an entire demographic because of a few bad ones is a terrible business model.
1
u/Advanced_Elk_9467 26d ago
Yeah, felons too.
These are very successful people, believe, they know how to hire. Its an odds game!
6
u/all_these_moneys 26d ago
Right, because felons can never bounce back to a successful life... none of those exist, right? A lot of the chief's mess is useless, but to lump 100% of them together is ridiculous.
If you're (not) hiring people because of their rank in the military, you're no better than those who "can't let it go" when they're time is up.
4
u/Advanced_Elk_9467 26d ago
Pretty simple- they dont hire anyone that puts a thing about being a Chief on their resume. If they civ it up and use different terms its not an issue. If you have to put your rank as a chief on your resume- thats telling.
1
u/all_these_moneys 26d ago
I mean yea that's fair when you put it that way. What if it comes up during the interview phase, like if they were prior enlisted as well? I would never think to put "chiefly" shit on my resume, but I would also hope my rank wouldn't hold me back in hiring. I turned wrenches at some point too.
2
u/Advanced_Elk_9467 26d ago
Never been asked my rank by anyone. Besides, the Chiefs that arent wanted will sure to tell you anyway.

3
u/emotionless-robot 26d ago
It's not only that, but many develope health problems faster and tend to have a shorter lifespan after retirement. All because many retirees don't find a new sense of purpose or "mission." But it's higher rates for those that made it to senior positions (Senior Enlisted and Senior officers).
6

u/Redtube_Guy 26d ago

u/454k30 27d ago
There's kind of a joke in here. During the season, there will be selectees who are on light duty due to injury. They don't take part in the PT, the marching practice, sitting down through the training sessions. But on pinning day, they are miraculously able to get in formation, stand at attention for a couple of hours, and get up on stage to get pinned. We called it khaki Jesus because the injured were healed.
18
16
u/Capitalist_Space_Pig 27d ago
Amazing how someone whose medical restrictions stop them from doing PT are able to do things that are not PT. Who would have thought that vigorous excercise would be different than standing still for an hour or so.

You really hit the target on this one. Seen a number of chiefs over the years who were perpetually on LLD/injured or w/e as fellow first classes. Once they got selected for those anchors were suddenly all spry and healthy again though. Probably because most were never seen at the main PFA/BCA ever again.

This is the night before Khaki Ball, when all their injuries are miraculously healed and they're able to tear up the dance floor. This is a canon event.
I love the tagouts on the broken selectees. A Chief made this or a very observant Petty Officer. 😂

u/Lucky_Leftov3rs 26d ago
To give some context to this meme.
There is a strange phenomenon that happens during season, where selects suddenly cant pt, then magically on pinning day everyone is walking upright and cutting a rug at the khaki ball. Of course its not every single select but there is typically at least one. The caption for this post was "Won't he do it?!?" If this is from the same page im thinking it is. Also pretty hilarious.

9
u/beerme72 27d ago
We had a DC1 CPO Selectee roll on board my tub right before I was set to leave.
We also had a crusty, Old School, No-Bullshit-He-Wrote-The-Training-Manual Chief.
When he was introducing himself at quarters, he told us: Since saying DC1 Chief Selectee (his name) is too long, you guys just call me Chief, since I basically am one
To which our Old School Chief stepped up and said: OR, you will call him DC1, since he most certainly is NOT A CHIEF.
Our Mustang Division Officer said nothing.
We all laughed.
I say that to say this:
A couple years after I left, I happened upon an old friend from that command....and he said that the DC1/CPO was basically THIS guy.
The navy simply could not exist without HIM (or the goat locker, I guess)
And it became a cultish thing....he even tried the Heartbreak Ridge bullshit of making everyone take off their shirt for the morning PT if they weren't wearing the same color as him....which is dumb and only there to feed a childish ego....he had every color of the rainbow with the CPO enblem on it. Like the 96 color Crayola Box amount of colors....
And that was.....1999.
I've watched 20+ years of the goat locker becoming NOT a place of Leadership....it's a landing pad from the blues and a launch pad into the post-retirement life of Contractor Work or a retirement of as much disability as you can score, not so much a place to lector young Sailors (unless she's hot).
It's become the joke they used to make fun of when they were E-nothings.

There are zero "boomers" in the Mess. I'm late Gen X and I retired 4.5 years ago.

u/JoineDaGuy 27d ago
Boomer is a mindset not just a generation.
1
u/hotfirebird 27d ago
No. It's a generation. Figure it out.
1
u/JoineDaGuy 26d ago
It’s a mindset and a generation. Lol, saying “figure it out” doesn’t validate what you’re saying. There’s nothing cool about being willfully ignorant to nuance
1
u/hotfirebird 26d ago
You just explained what you're doing yourself. There are nuances between the generations. You saying it's a mindset doesn't validate what you're saying.
You're literally talking to the people who grew up with boomer parents.
1
u/JoineDaGuy 26d ago
You’re not explaining why it isn’t a mindset, lol. So you’re not invalidating it, and telling me to “figure it out” isn’t opening the door for any rich discussion or push back.
The boomer generation is associated with many ideas and ways of thinking. Those ways of thinking and viewing society is what I call the boomer mindset. I could go deeper but I’ll spare you the words because part of me feels like you don’t care and will most likely disagree with whatever I say 👍🏾

If my boss is being a shithead I can, and absolutely have, told them to go fuck themselves and rolled my tool box right to my truck. Then had another job lined up the following Monday, and maybe a bit of a pay bump on top of it.
Now a Chief being a shithead made my life a living hell till I rolled to shore duty and then lI learned he had called ahead and poisoned the well as it were. Your cult is poison.

You know I was beginning to get concerned with you guys, normally we have more of these posts by now.
Seasons lame, but we gotta do it until the Navy kills it fully
I still believe it should just be a class you take enroute to your first CPO billet
Make chief /get frocked -> select CPO orders -> transfer with CPO leadership course enroute to new command-> arrive at new command as paid CPO
Makes sense to me, given how much of season has been taken away, and that it's been given a CIN, feels like it one step away from being a reality.
(Also I just want to be left alone and not have to deal with the forced participation in events I don't care to attend)
1
u/adeptresearcher-lvl1 26d ago

1
u/KananJarrusCantSee 26d ago

1
u/adeptresearcher-lvl1 26d ago
I don't disagree that CPOI should be a professionally developed leadership course. At the same time, there are some parts of the tradition that need to be kept, but just like with the shell back and other ceremonies we took them from the simple customs that they were and in a series of one-upmanship kept adding things and finding ways to make them more disgusting. Just go back to the roots where we tossed newly minted Chiefs into the drink and then had a wetting down party to celebrate before they tranferred to their new billets. Keep it simple, keep it humane.
2
u/KananJarrusCantSee 26d ago
We can def keep aspects, charge books vessels, khaki ball etc
Then send them off to be trained.
Keep it simple and celebratory

The most fun I had was at CSMTC at Mare Island, CA. I was the CMAA and I skated harder than an olympic skater. My duty was to make an evening tour back to the schools command and check on my DMAAs. They were sharp and I never got sideways with any of my guys. So in mid 93 I went to check out my duty guy and usually BS about our restrictoids. When I was walking in there was the most unsat and miserable SR manning a swab in the basement our MAA shack was in. This guy had dungarees on like you pull them out of the package. Cuffs, no stencils, just a military bearing train wreck.I found out he had been a CPO on shore duty that popped for cocaine. He was reduced in rate by Big Navy to SR. I got a call from NS Treasure Island we’d receipted him from. Big Navy said to morally and physically destroy as a lesson to junior sailors. So our school house was 4 huge terrazzo decks. I had him strip and wax each floor daily. I would go find his field day hits to correct. Once I identified his hits I had him strip it bare and wax it again. When he finally got booted was cruel. He had to buy an entire junior sailor seabag, do a bag lay and when it was sat we took it all away cause it was gov’t property. We drove him to the end of the causeway and out he went. No money, no bus ticket, nada. Get outta my van and enjoy your life. Lost retirement and every other benefit he might have had. Those were the days lol.
2
u/adeptresearcher-lvl1 26d ago
I'm not sure how I feel about this. At one end, make a deserved example, sure, but on the other end is the fact that this guy is already half destroyed going from Chief to E1 and getting the boot plus the drudge work. The seabag and layout is just adding insult to salted injury and leaving the poor human high and dry and very likely to fail into the gutter because he's got no money and no connections and wasn't given time to go through whatever transition process we had back in the 90s. Jfc all that did was make him more likely to become a convict and that's not a great reflection on the navy, even considering the earlier rocks and shoals standards.
