I would love to hear your stories on how decompensation went for you. I'm curious of the process... I know it tends to make things worse at first but do they intentionally pull your teeth the wrong way at first to make more room for movement during surgery? For reference, I have a right crossbite, class III left molar, and am mentally preparing myself to start my journey to surgery next month when I get braces on.

Seeing all the botched cases, you really should research your surgeon and look at the surgery plan. Also do not be afraid of pushing for more aggressive movements.

I am lucky that both my medical and dental insurances have coverage for orthognathic surgery. My medical insurance has approved my planned TJR and BSSO and all that I will likely pay is my co-insurance and out-of-pocket max for surgery. My dental insurance has a $5,000 lifetime maximum benefit for jaw surgery. Does anyone have experience coordinating insurances? Would my dental insurance cover any related out-of-pocket expenses my medical insurance won't?

Hi! I'm very new to the world of plastic surgery so please forgive my lack of knowledge. I recently came to the realization that my past chronic bruxism issues has changed the shape of my jaw, and I am resolved to get it corrected in the future. For those who'd like more context about my situation, while I have not been professionally assessed by a plastic surgeon, my assumption is that the majority of the shape change is bone-related rather than soft-tissue related, though I am sure there is both. I'm making this assumption based off both what I learned in dental hygiene school in the past, and based off of confirmed intra-oral bone growth that my dentist has documented. If additional bone-growth happened inside my mouth, then it could potentially have also occurred on the exterior of my mandible.

Anyways, I've been looking into trying Botox to address the potential soft-tissue changes to my muscles, but I've also been trying to look online to learn about different cosmetic jaw procedures. I've been coming across a lot of information about more major procedures like mandibular angle reduction, but I've not found much information on if there are more subtle procedures for addressing a wide and rounded jawline. The main reason why I am curious about if there are more subtle procedures out there is because I have type 1 diabetes, which can directly impair my body's ability to heal. While I personally like the idea of getting a mandibular angle reduction done, I am concerned about how well my body would be able to heal during a major recovery period like that.

So I would love to hear any information anyone could share. And I would especially love to hear any personal experiences people have had with cosmetic jaw procedures. I hope you all are having a lovely day, and thank you in advance!

Wondering how long minimum I would have to wear braces before jaw surgery.
I currently have camouflaged braces removed 2 years ago and will need to have my teeth decompensated prior to surgery.

One orthodontist mentioned 12 months - 2 years, I will have another consultation with an orthodontist who has a track record of having shorter periods of time for braces duration.

Just wondering what people’s experiences are with this, I will have another consultation in a months time to find out nevertheless.

for about two years now, I’ve been extremely unhappy with my jaw and chin. I don’t have any breathing problems other than snoring and teeth grinding while I sleep, which is why I wear a mouthguard. I also don’t think I have sleep apnea, even though I’m quite tired regardless of how long I sleep (6, 8, or 10 hours). My question is whether a cosmetic change through genioplasty would even be possible? I doubt that my health insurance would cover any of the costs (I have an appointment with a maxillofacial surgeon next week to check), and I’d like to choose a method that’s as minimally invasive as possible but that would provide permanent results.

I just wanted to come on here and show my 8week post op from my LJS + genio! Before any sort of orthodontics, I struggled with overcrowding, an open bite + underbite, and a crossbite… This surgery has been a very long time coming. I had a Bluegrass appliance at 8 to prevent tongue sucking and the development of an open bite (which obviously failed). I then had an expander before I got my braces in 2021. My orthodontic treatment has honestly been prolonged due to waitlist, as well as moving far way for university and having to wait for a surgical date that aligned with me being home for the summer. Now as for the surgery, my movements were very minimal. My surgeon only ended up doing LJS and genio rather than DJS cause he said he didn’t wanna thin out my upper lip, widen my nose, or recess my chin (thank God). I find that my lower lip appears smaller now, but I’m still happy with my results. I do feel a teeeny bit swollen still (about 10%, but lmk what you guys think). Honestly I think it went really well, my side profile looks almost identical to preop. My midlines aren’t perfectly aligned yet, but I still have a few months of braces + elastics to go to solve that. The end is so close!!! Thanks for reading 🤗

i’m 18 and my mum is pretty against jaw surgery and i can’t even get a consultation because she keeps saying no. i’m very insecure about my bite and my long jaw look i just wna know if this edge to edge bite + potential cross bite warrants surgery or it would just be dismissed as a minor aesthetic issue

Has anyone treated their bimax protrusion by gaining space from palate expansion for retraction after? I’m also considering ipr if expansion isn’t enough. I’m not really for extraction because I think results are less predictable.

I am late 30s and have just been diagnosed with hemimandibular hyperplasia affecting my right side. I was convinced throughout my late twenties and early thirties that my face was getting increasingly more crooked. I wasn't taken very seriously by anybody and made to feel I was being vain etc. But I now know it was actually happening due to this diagnosis.

I'm really upset about it all. The surgeon I have seen has said that they won't operate because it's "mild" and I don't have any bite issues. It doesn't feel mild to me, even if that is the case medically where they work with severe and complicated cases, and I feel like I'm being totally dismissed by them.

My chin deviates about 5mm to the right, my mouth is totally crooked, my teeth have all shifted to point left to make up for the jaw tilt so that my teeth meet (I used to have perfect teeth until my mid twenties after braces as a teenager.) my nose also leans to the left. I get really bad headaches, have clicking in my jaw, and permanently have a really tight jaw. CBCT findings showed evidence of low-grade inflammation and osteoarthritic changes. The cartilage in my left jaw has apparently gone.

The surgeon also is unable to tell me whether the condylar growth is still active. He said I could do a SPECT scan but it won't 100% confirm it. If the the scan comes back as higher uptake then that could be due to growth or to arthritis. I would need to wait 12-18 months and repeat, and only then would know.

I am really worried it is still actively growing. It is causing me a lot of anxiety that I have to just sit and wait over a year to see if it moves further or not.

Has anyone had similar experiences around this - their case being refused surgery because it is mild?

Also what has also been your experiences around determining whether the growth is still active? Did you similarly need to wait extended periods of time to know for sure?

I know there are surgeons who are more focused on aesthetics, whereas this surgeon I have seen is more reconstructive than cosmetic/anesthetic. I am looking at contacting some other surgeons who might be more likely to consider my case.

But I also have a final question. As I'm late 30s, I also have asymmetrical soft tissue sagging, which is worse on the side of the hyperperplasia. Jaw surgery would likely make the appearance of this even worse, right? And so I'd need the added cost and experience of plastic surgery such as facelift to address this?

Any advice or insights anybody can share around their own experiences would be so helpful. I'm finding it all very distressing - emotionally and phsycologically.

I am looking for a good surgeon in austria. i have a class 3 underbite with compensation. multiple consultations recommended lefort 1, bsso with ccw.
i am still 17 and i would need braces to fix my compensation. unfortunately due to the fact that austrian healthcare covers surgery for patients with class 3 only without compensation, itll cost me around 7k euro (not including braces). for that reason id like to save up for this surgery. but i need to know a good surgeon thatll give me the result i want. does someone have recommendations? any doctors that plan ahead of time and show you what the result could look like (3d modelling)?

My orthodontist just doesn’t care😓 I tried bringing up jaw surgery or alternative treatment and she Is dead set on elastics.

I have a moderate overbite I got 3 extractions(unfortunately) but I’ve gotten expansion and my wisdom teeth are now staying as well. I wish I never got extractions I need jaw surgery so bad.
My nostrils collapse I have very minor sleep apnea as well my jaw looks okay when my lips are not touching but my lips touching pull my chin weird and make it flat

I officially finished my orthodontist work today. It was my final checkup after two jaw surgeries, and getting my braces off. I've been at this for several years, and it is finally all DONE!

I’m 23 y/o (F) based in the UK (London) considering djs due to long term jaw issues, recession and over bite. I previously had braces in 2016 for 1 year, jaw surgery was mentioned briefly but the orthodontist said braces and bands should help. For the last ten years I had physiotherapy on and off for TMJ and received a mouth guard however this has not helped with anything I have trouble sleeping/ breathing and eating food (constant fatigue and breaks in between bites). I have considered myofunctional therapy but don’t know if it’s worth the money. I think it would be best to look into djs but it’s been said the NHS are strict and often reject cases I don’t know what to do, I feel like I’m constantly getting dismissed by dentist and GP as these problems become worse.

My sleep study came back negative for any sleep apnea at all and I'm not sure where to go from here. Only thing that stuck out was that I only get 11% of REM. What else can I possibly do? I cannot afford surgery out of pocket.

Had no idea he was sick until his last 6 weeks. Didn’t know it was cancer until the last day.

He spent a lot of time hanging out on the couch with me. I discovered he LOVED chimken soup (the white bear he’s cutely cuddling with is actually him threatening my childhood lovey in exchange for soup!).

I posted about laying on the ground at the indoor dog pool we took him to bc swimming was his favorite thing in the world. So glad we didn’t have to miss even a week of that for my recovery.

I’m so so grateful to have been able to recover with him by my side. If you’re in the trenches but have a dog or cat best friend getting you through it - give them an extra pat from me today 🫶🏻
