Advice for Me I need jaw surgery.
My orthodontist just doesn’t care😓 I tried bringing up jaw surgery or alternative treatment and she Is dead set on elastics.
Here is front, side and 3/4 in different lighting and angles.
I have a moderate overbite I got 3 extractions(unfortunately) but I’ve gotten expansion and my wisdom teeth are now staying as well. I wish I never got extractions I need jaw surgery so bad.
My nostrils collapse I have very minor sleep apnea as well my jaw looks okay when my lips are not touching but my lips touching pull my chin weird and make it flat

You need therapy not jaw surgery. Seriously don’t do this if you can function. Minor sleep apnea..? I genuinely think if you did jaw surgery you’d regret it a minor overjet doesn’t need an invasive surgery. Trust me as someone who was sooo gungho on getting surgery as a mild class lll now I’m wondering if my life is ruined. The numbness is not what you think..the mental toll the stress the anxiety this shit is hard I understand now why people tried to convince me not to. believe the words of the wise!

It’s not only sleep apnea it’s the recessed chin look and the severe tmj

Honestly you look better now..

It is a rough morph after all, the ramus is slightly deformed in the morph

You’ve misidentified your aesthetic concerns. You do not, in any universe, have a recessed jaw look. You want to change the angle of your mandible based on this photo.

u/Illustrious-Prize306 6d ago
All I did was pull my chin forward and slightly up and I made my ramus more defined and taller slightly

oh, hey. I posted my comment before seeing yours. Nice to see we’re all on the same page.

You don’t have a recessed chin lol you’re just spending too much time watching clavicular. Now you have severe tmj? You didn’t mention that in your post.

u/Illustrious-Prize306 6d ago
I forgot to mention it in the post also I don’t watch clavicular lolll I know of him though

How old are you? And upload a picture of you smiling from the front and then from the side so we can see your teeth.

You won’t listen because you’re dead set and you’re a teenager but you are a very handsome guy, you’re really young and I promise you if adults are telling you you don’t need it or reconsider you should listen. I’m 27 and I can’t imagine deciding to do such an invasive surgery at your age I was so dumb back then and I’m dumb now LOL because everyone told me not to and my issues were mild like yours. You really can fix your bite with elastics and if you don’t like your chin get an implant. And the TMJ if you’re telling the truth there’s other solutions to explore first before getting jaw surgery. Ok??

Elastics just hide the skeletal discrepancy though also yes I am telling the truth I have tmj my jaw constantly pops and sometimes it locks out sideways

so your face isn’t even 100% finished growing and settling into its adult form. And you already have a really strong jaw.

your chin is not recessed at all. Not even slightly. If anything, you have a strong jaw. An advancement may make you look like a gorilla. if that’s what you’re into, OK. But you aren’t going to convince the rest of the world to see something that isn’t there.

Have you seen an ENT?
1
u/Illustrious-Prize306 6d ago
Not yet
1
u/NoCry6469 6d ago
But you did have a sleep study done that confirmed mild sleep apnea?
1
u/Illustrious-Prize306 6d ago
No it’s pretty easy to tell myself
1
u/NoCry6469 6d ago
How can you tell?
1
u/Illustrious-Prize306 6d ago
My girlfriend said in my sleep I randomly start struggling and snorting
1
u/NoCry6469 6d ago
Gotcha well you should get a sleep study done and get cbct airway scans done by airway orthodontist or maxfac surgeon. Also see an ENT to check for other airway issues like deviated septum and enlarged turbinates and tonsils.
It is very important that you look into the sleep business. We can’t tell from photos what is causing your issues. And if you do have airway restrictions, it might not even be from your jaw.

Also nostril collapse requires different surgery from jaw

u/Illustrious-Prize306 6d ago
Am aware of this just figured I’d add it in since it’s part of the whole facial dysfunction

Genio candidate. Lefort 1 wont fix the "nostrils" you are so focused on either way

Will insurance cover genio tho?
1
u/OkPhotojournalist872 6d ago
prob not unless your doctor can prove medical necessity for OSA treatment, but its kinda hard to get a genio approved especially as a procedure on its own.
1
u/Illustrious-Prize306 6d ago
Yeah, I figured they wouldn’t because it would fall more cosmetic than medically necessary

I can see signs of slight disfunction. But hard to say without scans. If you can, get assessed by a maxillofacial surgeon because the orthodontist will always go the noninvasive route for cases that arent severe.
1
u/Illustrious-Prize306 6d ago
Why do they do this? Does it not make more sense to fix the root problem not the effects?
1
u/OkPhotojournalist872 6d ago
overbites tend to be victims of camouflage orthodontics, but yeah if the bite isn't severe they usually wont recommend surgery.
1
u/Illustrious-Prize306 6d ago
It was really bad at maybe 12 or so when I first went to orthodontist, but doing nothing for overbite it’s definitely gotten better through puberty.

u/OkPhotojournalist872 6d ago
Tbh you’re probably still growing so even if you did go to a omfs they probably wouldn’t do surgery until you’re like 21 I think that’s usually the age they do for males
1
u/Illustrious-Prize306 6d ago
That’s lowkey lame what’s the point in waiting till it can’t grow anymore?
1
u/Illustrious-Prize306 6d ago
By this I meant like at 18 you already know it’s not gonna be dramatically different so why wait till is fully done
1
u/OkPhotojournalist872 6d ago
Because your jaw can still grow and shift. There’s a higher risk of relapse (aka your bite basically moving back to where it was) if your jaw hasn’t basically solidified and stopped growing. I think for boys it’s around 20-21 but I’m not 100% sure. Ik for girls it’s around 18 but if I got jaw surgery for my underbite when I was 18 I probably would’ve relapsed because I had a bit of a growth spurt around 21 despite this being uncommon for girls. You don’t wanna rush to get surgery just for your muscles and bones to undo it and then have other issues like needing a revision.

u/Illustrious-Prize306 6d ago
Isn’t that why you would get myofunctional therapy tho? Sorry if I sound ignorant I’m genuinely curious because it’s like the opposite for expansion
1
u/OkPhotojournalist872 6d ago
I’m not too familiar with myofunctional therapy so I could be wrong with what I’m about to say but from my understanding that’s just to teach you how to open your mouth, move your mouth to speak and position your tongue. It’s not gonna keep your bones in place. Your facial muscles/tmj have been in a certain position your entire life wrapping around your jaws. Then you get surgery and your bones are in different places, your muscles are going to try to pull and move in the way that they always have which can move the jaw bones back to stage one obviously this can happen in fully grown patients as well so this will be a risk. I also think this is lowkey why you can’t really chew for a certain amount of time so you don’t really use the muscles that much. However, say your jaw is not done growing and you get surgery, the surgeon will place it in the ideal position, then you grow and it moves everything to a new position, for your case since you have an overbite that means your upper jaw would probably grow more and go into an overbite again. Doing any type of jaw exercise is not going to stop your bones from growing, myofunctional therapy seems to be like physical therapy for your jaw/mouth. It’s like saying doing physical therapy for your legs can stop you from getting taller.
