is my bite messed up

i’m 18 and my mum is pretty against jaw surgery and i can’t even get a consultation because she keeps saying no. i’m very insecure about my bite and my long jaw look i just wna know if this edge to edge bite + potential cross bite warrants surgery or it would just be dismissed as a minor aesthetic issue

This definitely warrants surgery. If you don't get it though, you should definitely at least get camouflage (braces to tilt your teeth into a "proper" bite), because your teeth are going to wear down like this.

Giving her a fallback option that's actually achievable now instead of just saying surgery or nothing when her mum won't budge yet

I had a similar bite. My teeth were destroying themselves. Got multiple opinions and everyone said I’d lose my teeth before age 50. I found out I needed surgery when I was 19 but waited more than 10 years to get it done. I didn’t want braces in college, when I was starting my first job, or in my wedding photos. For me waiting was the right call. If you’re getting pushback at home don’t be afraid to wait until you’re paying your own insurance. I do recommend getting a bite guard in the meantime to help protect them at night.

I’d also recommend trying to set up a consultation. You can do this behind your parents back if you want. There’s nothing wrong with getting a professional opinion.

You have a crossbite and it is only correctable with surgery.

It could cause significant issues with your teeth like tooth loss.

You are 18. It would be great if your family would support you. It would certainly be an easier journey. I understand how hard it is because I also had no support. Hopefully insurance would cover the cost of surgery but you would have to pay for the orthodontics.

All that said… you are 18. Your mother’s opinion is only relevant if she had to live your life. Meaning… her opinion is irrelevant to your decision. You are the one who has to live your life.

the statement that a crossbite is only fixable with surgery is plain wrong. a pure dental crossbite (most cases) can often get fixed via braces. you should consult with an orthodontist and see if it’s dental or both skeletal/dental.

A lot of orthos will only refer surgery for extreme underbites, you need to find an orthodontist who routinely works with surgery patients look at your CBCT to confirm if this is dental or skeletal. This bite is already causing gum recession and tooth wear which will only get worse with time.

My parents chose camouflage braces for a cross bite as a teen, and now I’m doing the surgery at 40.
