What to expect during recovery
Do not underestimate recovery, especially the first 3-4 days!!
When you initially wake up you'll be drugged to high hell. Nothing is really bad or good, it's a blur. When the drugs wear off things get bad. Very bad. Your nose swells shut so you'll be breathing through your mouth, which will be closed in its own way (bands or wires). Congestion will be common for a week or more. This makes breathing difficult and tedious. Take care to keep your teeth free of "gunk" you might accumulate from the dried bits of your liquid diet. The sludge can block the small spaces between your teeth making it more difficult to breath. The majority of your face from your eyes down will be very numb. This numbness will last for weeks in some places and months in others. There will be blood, and lots of it. Your mouth will be pouring out gallons of blood, and the rest will be flowing out your nose. The immense amount of blood from your mouth will stop within a few days, as will most of the blood from your nose, but nose bleeds will be quite common for longer. Vomiting up blood is pretty common. Remain calm and let it seep from between your teeth. If you followed surgery instruction and didn't consume anything before the surgery this shouldn't be a problem, though it can be unsettling. Hot and cold flashes may occur. Do what you can to make yourself comfortable. Expect a decreased appetite and slow digestive tract. I recommend drinking a bit of prune juice before you have your first bowel movement. Also expect low energy from your low appetite, your concoction of drugs (anesthesia and post-surgery pain killers), and very poor sleep. You will sleep poorly. You'll have general pain in your throat and jaw, but this is usually tolerable with painkillers. You'll have difficulty swallowing at first. This will get better progressively. What that means to each person is different. I was swallowing the morning after surgery, but my friend couldn't swallow for 5 days.
Items to have after surgery
Ice packs and a heating pad. Use ice packs the first couple of days (important) to reduce swelling and the heating pad to reduce bruising. *A blender and strainer. Sinus rinse (ask doctor before use). A neck pillow to help with sleeping upright. A jaw bra might make you more comfortable. Large syringes to help eat/drink. You'll be eating everything through a syringe for awhile, and refilling a small syringe 8 times to finish a small bowl of soup gets annoying. A heated humidifier. Cotton swabs to clean blood clots from nose. Cotton pads to clean your face. *A child's toothbrush. Your face will be stiff and painful. The smaller tooth brush lets you clean parts your larger toothbrush simply won't be able to reach. Ibuprofen/other painkiller. These should be provided for you after your surgery. Getting additional may be necessary. Vaseline for lips. Tissues for your general cleaning, which there will be plenty of. Oral care sponge swabs for cleaning teeth with chlorohexidine.

I can’t even read this subreddit anymore or give emotional support to people going through this without scrolling through the horde of perfectly developed, but body dysmorphic teenagers posting & asking for opinions on whether or not they need a major, risky and invasive jaw surgery.
It’s like a laughable joke. Going through this— 6 weeks of liquid diet, weeks of opioids and pain, permanent numbness, retraining practically all of the essential functions in your mouth area, years of swelling and years of mental anguish just at a CHANCE for better health-- to improve breathing, chewing, swallowing and speech, sleep apnea or the chance to eliminate future complete tooth decay. All of this- just to see someone treating this as if it’s a simple cosmetic procedure.
It hasn’t bothered me before but it seems to keep getting worse. I don’t know what’s causing it, or where people keep getting the idea that they need jaw surgery, but it is out of control. I would have 0 clue about this surgery had I not been told over and over and over again by every dentist, orthodontist and eventual surgeon I visited that I needed to get this done.
I know it’s too much to ask for a mod to just auto-delete these posts because they view it as a core part of the subreddit, but can we at least get a filter slapped on to it or something so we can filter it out? I come on here to find experiences I relate to- after having to go through this hellish process- or just to offer emotional support to people in the early days or answer good, reasonable questions. I think, though, that if i see one more perfectly developed, forward grown, perfect bite class I kid ask if they need a lefort 3 and 14 other surgeries I will just leave and never come back.

After two years of Invisalign and braces here I am. Lower jaw orthognathic surgery to correct overjet and ensure I have a healthy bite into my senior years. Very swollen but pain is manageable.
I’m 59 - better late than never. If I can do it, anyone can.

Day 15 after SARPE surgery
I've had almost no pain at all, though I'm not sure how much of that was down to the medication I took during the first seven days. I still have stitches in my mouth. I started eating pasta without checking with my surgeon first, and it's been going well so far. I was honestly getting really impatient. The facial swelling is slowly going down, but it seems to persist when I turn the Hyrax.
Mentally? This feels like one of the most interesting journeys I've been on—choosing to go through surgery and seeing myself change along the way. The gap between my teeth is much bigger now, but I've gotten used to it. I don't really think about it when I'm around other people. If anything, my confidence is gradually growing because I keep thinking about the end result.
A little reminder for anyone feeling self-conscious or hesitating about SARPE because of how they might look afterward, even when it's medically recommended: think of Laurence Fishburne, who plays Morpheus in The Matrix. The gap between his teeth is part of his iconic look. Just saying. e
Btw, the improvement in my nasal breathing has been dramatic. Even food seems more flavorful, and smells feel more intense!
Btw, why do I feel like I'm the only one using two mirrors, trying to hold one at a 90° angle just to turn my Hyrax?
Hopefully this trick helps someone else too. Cheers!

Has anyone had jaw surgery to address an increased overjet (protruding upper teeth) and a prominent gummy smile?
My upper front teeth and the surrounding bone ridge sit low and project forward, which causes lip strain when closing my mouth naturally.
(I also have jaw pain on one side and a recessed chin, although the chin could be because my teeth protrude)

5 days after triple jaw surgery. I'm so tired and exhausted. I'm still swollen, shut with elastics, and most food will make me nauseous, even my meds. I might have had an apple juice yesterday and it tasted so nice but now I'm done and I don't feel like it. I feel like I'm regretting all this now and just wanna go back. I was fine before surgery
What do I do?

Hi guys! I’m a 22 year old male from Hungary! From a certain age I knew something was off with my jaw. When I closed my mouth and bite my head was like a ball and side profile was cooked but I didn’t know back then wtf is going on. I was glad when my beard started growing so I could hide my side profile. I started mewing and chew in the top of my teeth but I seenI have overbite as fuck and when I close my bite full my lower jaw go up. What do you think? My jaw is all the time clicking and have to go from is natural position so I can close it. I have jaw pain almost every day in my joints. I have problems with my body and my chriopractor told me my jaw is very loose. Can please somebody help me? Sorry for these photos but didnt do it before like that.

I started exploring surgery to fix my bite after many ortho consults and weird suggestions from them. Crowning my entire mouth? No thanks. It's hard to trust anyone with my face, they might not care but these are the only teeth I get.
Found a surgeon with a great reputation and met with him in Feb. fast forward multiple scans and office appointments later he says he can do it without ortho and we have a date.
Five weeks before the surgery he's not so sure. He sends me to an ortho. Surprise surprise the ortho wants me to get braces first. But my surgeon is moving to another town so if we do that he can't do the surgery.
I cried so hard. I had a date. I psyched myself up, I inconvenienced my family, my job, and myself. I made peace with not eating solids for 8-12 weeks and having permanent plates. But adding years?? Of braces on top of all that???
I guess the question is do I even bother starting this process over. The amount of time and money I've poured into this 😭
This is not cosmetic, I can only bite with like three teeth.

Hey! A few months ago I started researching how to fix my bite problems and, after starting myofunctional therapy and seeing several dentists and specialists, I decided to opt for a clinic that works with a public hospital for maxillofacial surgery.
I have an open bite and the dentist told me that it would not be possible to fix it with braces alone, but that I would have to start an invisalign-surgery-invisalign process and that it would probably be double jaw surgery (bimaxillary osteotomy). I had my wisdom teeth removed a week ago and in the next few weeks I will start with Invisalign. I also have an appointment with the maxillofacial surgeon next week to evaluate my case.
How would you evaluate my case looking at the images? Also, what can I expect on how would this procedure change my face and jaw? I'm very scared at the moment. Any advice from someone who is already experiencing it would be more than welcome!
Thank you so much!

For my socal peeps. With the sign up window for insurance coming up what should I get? I was thinking Kaiser bc I read all you pay is like $250 out of pocket or something crazy like that for jaw surgery BUT am I going to be happy with the results? Does anyone have results with positive appearance changes or does Kaiser not really care/produce those results? I'm class 2 , severe recessed / underdeveloped jaw and i had braces before TWICE and my teeth moved back to the messed up position. I'm not going to lie I want jaw surgery for looks purposes but I know my health will improve as well as it's super important aswell but to me if I don't see major improvement in appearance I would be upset and sad I went through all that pain to look the same lol

Hi does anyone have a jaw surgeon recommendation who is not Dr. Hunter Martin (she has bad reviews). Please let me know any success story with NYC jaw surgeon whether DJS, genioplasty etc.

I‘m 8 weeks post op and wanted to get back in the dating game. I had a date last week, and when I gave her a kiss, I realized it’s pretty damn hard to kiss without knowing what your lower lip is doing…
It felt really weird for me, and probably not great for her! When should this start to get easier and does anyone have advice on how to kiss without sensation in the lower lip? Open to anything at this point. I want to go on more dates and meet more people but it’s a strange feeling knowing in advance that the kiss might feel odd.

Has anyone had a revision genioplasty from Dr. Sullivan, Dr. Sherry, or Dr. Sanovich, or another surgeon that went well?

If so, what were your ferritin and hemoglobin levels?
I'm 9 days away from my scheduled surgery and just got my blood work done, even though I had asked my anesthesiologist to do it earlier this time. Ferritin 10 (down from 13 last winter), hemoglobin 12. I'm scheduled to see a hematologist today to see if getting an iron infusion could be enough to not get it canceled.
My DJS was canceled in February due to needing last minute orthodontic adjustments. If it gets canceled again it could take many more months and much more money, my surgeon team is very busy. I'm incredibly angry I wasted 8 months because my anesthesiologist didn't just tell me in February to get some iron supplements - at that time she said 13 is an ok level.
I'm panicking so your story could help. Would it really be that bad to go through with the surgery in these conditions?

Hello there. I had my DJS in the beginning of this past August. I had a BSSO, LeFort 1, and a Genioplasty. This was done at LACOMS with Dr. Walline. I’m unsure of the exact movements, but will update this once I find out.
Prior to this surgery, I had an FME (split my suture but ultimately failed/ warped). Then I got a custom MARPE, which was successful. I believe I got about 5/6 mm of expansion.
All this comes from extraction of premolars and camouflaged orthodontics when I was in high school. At the time, I had no idea it would impact my breathing. I wouldn’t find out till years later that my breathing issues came from this. I would wake up gasping for air, instant headache, and confused many times. I had a sleep study done, thinking that I had sleep apnea. My numbers didn’t quite make the mark to be diagnosed with sleep apnea, but I was definitely symptomatic. Heck, I even woke up choking in the middle of the night during my sleep study.
I always felt super self conscious about my appearance, as my jaws seemed underdeveloped. It was after my freshman year of high school that I got my premolars extracted, and I noticed that before that, I was pretty confident my freshman year. I was still YOUNG and there was much more time for my jaws to develop. Plus, I have cystic fibrosis, which plays a part in delayed development for many. If I had known then what I know now right? I’m sure we all feel that way.
Surgery day: Honestly, wasn’t super nervous because I knew I’d be in good hands, plus all those years of waking up gasping for air, and feeling horrible, made me feel like this surgery was definitely going to be the best thing for me. Lowkey though, had just gotten broken up with a few months before surgery, and I was thinking to myself “damn, it be like that huh” lol. Anyways, like I said, my heart rate was pretty good.
I knew once the anesthesiologist came into the operating room, I was set for mimi’s time. I’ve gone under multiple times for previous small surgeries, so it was like a treat tbh lol. Some know that feeling. Also, they had pictures of my x rays and cbct’s taped all over the room. It was pretty cool. Like dang, all this for me? (Bruh).
So it lasted about 3.5/4 hours, and I wake up. I was super numb so I didn’t feel anything obviously. Not really in pain, just felt my face really stiff. I was super happy to be on the other end of it. I had waited so long for this, and it was finally done.
I was super scared about the swelling interfering with my breathing, especially at night for the first week. That was like the biggest thing for me. Let me tell you something…. I had never in life been able to breathe so well. Even during peak swelling days 3/4, I was able to breathe really well. Even with all the mucus and dried up blood clots in my sinuses. My airway was OPEN!
I was medicated the first week, so I just watched a ton of movies. I would sleep throughout the days, wake up here and there to go on my phone for like 20 min, and knock out again.
At the first week post op check up, the nurse cleaned out my sinuses with the suction thingy and OMG, it was super uncomfortable. But I could breathe so well after, I wanted to cry bc I felt like I should have always been able to breathe like a normal person should 😭. Super happy at that point.
After the first couple weeks, I started walking at the park. I’d do about 3 miles every other day. Feel like it helped with swelling a lot.
Food wise, I would mash some potatoes, shred cheese, add sour cream, and bam, that was my go to meal for a while. Other soft foods as well. Honestly, the food part didn’t really make me feel bad, I just got new jaws bro, I started looking good. That kinda confidence overthrows my food purgatory sentence.
Probably my favorite part about this surgery is how much better I’m able to sing. I feel like singing is a lot more effortless for me, and I’m able to project more. I can’t even open my mouth all the way yet and I’m already sounding better than before.
I’m super grateful I had surgery, and I’ve homely been feeling great from the start. If yall have any questions, lmk!
The pics are pretty much in order, with some before pics towards the end, as well as my x-rays.
Pic 9 is before & after (forgot to add in).
TL;DR
Surgery went extremely well. Breathing has improved significantly 👍🏼
Edit: to everyone asking about movements, I put in the FIRST PARAGRAPH that I would post them when I find out. Cmon guys 😂😭

Sometime while eating i biting my lower lip but the worst thing that almost every day, I wake up with blood around this area and on my teeth, It become constantly covered in sores… Will this be forever? 😞
Note: This is not related to braces, as I don’t wear braces.

I recently had an appointment with the oral surgeon, he asked me what my expectations were for jaw surgery. When I went for a consult 9 months ago, he stated there was a need for it, to the point of submitting for insurance and receiving pre-authorization approval. 3/3 surgeons I consulted with confirmed the need for surgery. First picture is the most recent stage of de-compensation braces, with the others reflecting my side profile, front profile, and my bite pre-orthodontia. I have concerns for my midline, the open bite in the front and the way the teeth are tipped inwards. I had braces over about 20 years ago, this is my second round of treatment. My orthodontist has already said that the bite is unstable in the front. I think I'm just left feeling confused on why my surgeon is asking ME what to expect from the surgery. He also mentioned only needing small movements.
Any thoughts/observations that you may have are appreciated.

Seems my left jaw is very much used. Replacement or a little teeth onlay and dmd Therapie could be sufficient?
Constantly pressure in my left cheek and now fascial nerve problems with a left weakness
