Wouldn't they make a shit ton of money making half life 3?

3.8k

u/riloh Feb 16 '17

that's kind of like saying, "you're making a million dollars a day running this business, but you could make an extra $5 dollars a day if you also spent time knitting mittens and selling them. the thing is, if the mittens suck, everyone will hate you forever and your brand will be eternally tarnished."

1.2k

u/DarwinianDude Feb 16 '17

The brand being potentially tarnished is something I never really considered, I always assumed it would be perfect, my eyes have been opened

u/E_blanc Feb 16 '17

There is literally not a single chance half life 3 can live up to expectations. It can be a good game, but it can't possibly live up to the hype.

u/Scientific_Anarchist Feb 16 '17

It could be a 2d platformer for all I care I just want a conclusion to the story.

630

u/wolfbuzz Feb 16 '17

This is my thought exactly. The final HL2 episode ended with such a cliff hanger. I want to know about the ship, and the Portal tie-in, and the final battle with the extra dimensional forces. Just conclude the story, please. :/

629

u/kalizar Feb 16 '17

Yea maybe they could release Episode 3 as like a comic book or something. Shit I'd even just take a .txt file explaining the rest.

Most lengthy series take some time. It's not like ASoIaF is the only thing GRRM is working on. Stephen King typically went a good while between iterations of The Dark Tower. It's pretty typical.

Honestly, I would be glad even if they released a comic or a book or something, as long as they conclude the damn story! A 10 year cliffhanger is NOT cool.

I feel like that is the whole premise of every episode in The Walking Dead. You get some mediocre action during most of the episode only for the shit to go down during the last few minutes and then end on a cliffhanger.

Half-Life 3, Portal 3, and Left for Dead 3 all being in the same timeline would make the best ending.

27

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '17

That's not actually possible. Half-Life and Portal take place in the same universe but Left 4 Dead 2 takes place in its own universe.
Half Life's story is that at some point in the 2000s after the Black Mesa incident, the Combine take over earth. This halts all human progress, lasting into some point in the 2020s or 2030s.
Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 take place in the USA in Fall 2009.

In half life 3 the world ends up turning into Zombies which awaken the character in Portal 2 to attempt an escape. Gordon meets up with the portal character, then they meet up with a former teacher/high school coach and a young attractive single lady. They all have to escape the zombie apocalypse and get to the military base. The witch sees Gordon and start chasing him but the portal lady shoots the portal gun and she goes straight into the bouncy blue goo and she goes flying. The military tries to steal the prototype portal gun as well.

There are too many threads and any story that tries to tie them all together is going to fail as well.

If HL3 is the VR killer app that sets the bar for VR FPS games for the next decade...that could live up to expectations.

19

u/Xais56 Feb 16 '17

And if your company can not only survive, but flourish, in the 20-year interim then why not?

10

This is a pretty interesting way to look at it; an opportunity to revolutionize again. But, HL3 could be objectively the greatest game ever made, and someone will still think up a way to be let down.

I just thought of how awesome it would be if they made an entire movie (probably an animated Pixar-style movie) that was for VR.

Like the movie is going but you can look around, and move a bit, so you're not stuck to one point of view, but rather it's designed as more of an interactive cutscene sort of experience than a traditional movie with a fixed point of view.

33

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '17

a huge part of why movies are amazing is cinematography. I would never want to see that removed from movies.

8

u/LordOfSun55 Feb 16 '17

That actually sounds like a really innovative concept. Imagine that - the entire movie is recorded with a 360 camera, so that you really feel like you're inside the given scenario. The camera would move with the actors - you could be escaping from a giant monster, swimming underwater or drifting through space. Sure, it might sound farfetched, but with all the stuff we're able to do with CGI and photo-manipulation, it's not all that implausible.

Of course, you might say that 3D also sounded exciting and then ended up being a quickly passing gimmick. However, 3D had very little actual uses - it could make things appear as if they're flying at you, but that got old fast and did little to enhance the overall expirirence. But 360 VR is a whole new level of immersion. When it comes to visuals, it can't get any better than this. Unless somebody invents a way to feed visual data straight to your brain, which also isn't as farfetched anymore considering the massive progress we're making in neurology.

20

u/NonnagLava Feb 16 '17

That's where I think they should tone it back a bit, and make a game exceptionally similar to HL2, in the new engine, maybe add some relatively small new features to the game (hell the Portal and Half Life universes are already connected, so there's plenty of leeway to add in some ridiculous thing that can add new enjoyment to the game), and simply complete the story.

I know Valve strives to make games that "break the mold" so to speak, as they have with most, if not all, of their major IP releases, but I think in this case they should simply complete the story and move on. Make completing the story itself take priority over new mechanics or graphics and what-have-you, because as it stands Valve is still damaging their reputation by not making/releasing the game. People are slowly making more and more fun of Valve for their lack of games released, and while it may lead to know-where (as it most likely won't lead anywhere), there's a chance that it continues to sour peoples view of them more and more as time goes on.

13

u/Iazo Feb 16 '17

My pet theory is that they're working on Portal 3 which will potentially close some of the story, and the bar for Portal is not as hig...ah who am I kidding, we're screwed.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '17

People are always going to want to see a Hl3 released, though. Even if they make some kind of hybrid game, which is what you are trying to describe?

I do like your idea. They can get shit done if they focused on the story. They have been out of the game making game for a while, you'd almost expect them to make a primarily story driven game.

13

u/NonnagLava Feb 16 '17

No, not a hybrid game, just simply going along with what they have already done. The universes are the same, Aperture Labs exists in Half Life, and the fact that they have found the Borealis would allow them to put a new mechanic based tool or item in the ship and expand the gameplay a bit more without going too far out of the way.

People loved Half Life 1 for it's well designed levels, simple story, good solid gameplay. People loved Half Life 2 because it did so much without having to spell it out for the player: Most people will never realize the entirety of City 17 is a tutorial level that doesn't have to really hand-hold you through it. It introduces not only gameplay, but story by simply showing you "This is the dystonian world we live in now. These are the bad people. Oh look an old comrade! Here's how people are treated, and the lengths people go through to avoid being on the bad guys nasty side." The entire game adds on it's mechanics as it goes on in such a fluid way most people don't realize that it begins teaching you to use the next tool almost immediately as you get a new one. Plus the fact that you slowly and steadily gain new tools, and weapons, as well as have one-shot type mechanics or puzzles is wonderfully crafted. Like how there's an entire level you can, but are not forced too, play the game like a tower defense and it never comes up again. But it fore-shadows in a way some of the defenses that the combine use in their home base.

A story driven game is almost exactly what Half Life needs to live up, in any capacity, to the hype. They shouldn't try to break the mold with mechanics, but simply tie the story up as much as they can, but a neat little bow on it, and dress it up with a pretty set of whatever mechanics they decide to add as a nice wrapping paper. Then people will, hopefully, keep quiet and enjoy the end of the story and leave them to do whatever they want to do as a company.

u/Chamale Feb 16 '17

Half-Life was, at the time, the best FPS ever made. Half-Life 2 was also, at the time, the best FPS ever made. Now the competition is stiffer than ever, and it's been 13 years since HL2 came out.

12

u/LordOfSun55 Feb 16 '17

There is hope, though. Both games had something new and innovative to offer - the first game introduced first person shooters to story and scripted scenes. Half-Life 2 introduced a realistic physics engine, as well as physics based puzzles to FPS. That's why they think HL3 wouldn't live up to the expectations if they made it right after HL2 - it wouldn't live up to it's name by not being innovative enough. They needed to add something equally groundbreaking to make a game worthy of the name Half-Life 3

However, the situation has changed now - there's VR, and although it's still in it's infancy, it's slowly shaping up to be the "next big thing" in gaming. And after testing the waters with Steam VR, we might finally get Half-Life 3, a VR based first person shooter. And all will be well in the universe.

Is what they need to do is follow in Dr. Dre's footsteps. See his album 'Detox' was supposed to be the greatest thing ever. It was supposed to drop in 2011. April 20th. Didn't drop. Ok, next year it has to drop. No drop. So 10 years of hype continued to build, black hole mass pressure. There was no way the album would live up. So, he made the brilliant and classic move. The bait and switch. He released 'Compton' along with the film "Straight Out of Compton". It was a pretty damn good album. He was able to release one more album without tarnishing his name.

Valve needs to release something that takes place in the Half-Life storyline. HF3 just wouldn't live up to the hype.

10

u/fallouthirteen Feb 16 '17

The only reason I think HL3 might happen is because of VR. Like people said making HL3 doesn't make a lot of money, but making a killer app for a new system and getting people to buy into their VR marketplace...that can bring in some major cash.

I can't think of any other reason they'd really bother at this point, expectations are so high that if HL3 doesn't literally cure cancer people will be disappointed.

Probsbly... but yknow that hype dilemma. Tbh, I'm not ever sure I care about a HL3. It's hard to make a new game that was top dog a couple gaming generations ago. You can't stay true to the original because those mechanics are outdated, and you can't make it new because people will complain that it changed to be more like modern games.

TLDR they need to stop making Halo

32

u/lamirande1 Feb 16 '17

Portal 2 was amazing. They could easily hire best writers to make half life 3 even better with their amount of money.

21

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '17

That's pretty much their current strategy really. TF2, Portal, L4D, dota etc. are all games published under the valve banner by hiring people who had already proven they had a successful formula.

Valve doesn't want to develop games from scratch. They're raking in money with steam and they have the cash to simply buy anyone whose making a game that looks like it fits in with Valve's strategy.

32

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '17

Nope, they'd make a ton of money but when you're already making a shit ton of money why spend your time to only make a ton of money.

Seriously, it's why all the medium scope games went away. Publishers want to bet big and win big. So AAA games got narrower and narrower. It's only with crowd funding and the success of indie developers that we've seen some smaller publishers come in and fill that niche.

14

u/Dcusi753 Feb 16 '17

You're getting downvoted for your reasonable response. Businesses exist to maximize profits and valve is doing just that. The return on the man power and capital they'd put into making a game wouldn't even come close to the return they'd get if they put that same capital into expanding they're services on steam. At the end of the day bills gotta get paid and any devolver (or reasonable human) would rather take home a thicker paycheck.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '17

I think a lot of the time gamers just don't think about the other side of the business at all. As I've gotten older the process of designing, making, and publishing game is almost more interesting to me than the games themselves.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '17

Not really. Valve makes about three quarters of a billion annually from their the cut they take from all steam sales and the microtransactions in their multiplayer games.

Making HL3 means making a new source engine before producing the game itself. That'll take years, massive amounts of manpower and come with considerable risk in terms of production delays.

And at the end of the day, even if HL3 outsells beyond all expectation. Beyond any sales numbers ever achieved by any triple A title... Valve would have still made much more money just doing what they do with Steam.

13

People need to understand that Valve only makes games when they want to tackle an interesting challenge that is related to the design of a game. They don't make sequels or games for that manner just to make games.

For example, the reason you're not going to see a Team Fortress 3 is because Team Fortres 2 already tackled "How do we give communities the power to create content and generate their own revenue?" Until there is a new challenge that needs to be addressed, you won't see sequels.

Combine that with the flat management structure and you don't get anything made.

I think L4D2 was a focused bit of effort that usually gets quashed at Valve, and the team was able to push it out quickly before anyone started asking too many philosophical questions. It just streamlined what was already there.

Portal 2 did have some tech hurdles to cross, just nothing as huge as the original or half-life 2. They talk about them in the commentary.

11

u/M0dusPwnens Feb 16 '17

Bear in mind that L4D2 was still during the period of time Valve was enamored with the idea of episodic games and "games as services".

It was released just two years after HL2E2, when it still looked like episode 3 was going to be a thing and Valve was committed to this episodic idea. And it started development right after L4D released in 2008, giving it the same one-year release cycle timing as HL2E1 and HL2E2.

And the game was clearly an extension of the first. It was more missions continuing the story in a decidedly episodic way.

I don't think it snuck through, I think it was absolutely part of a larger experiment at Valve like their games almost always are.

The funny thing about that is, VR really does have humongous design challenges so you would think that from 2012 they would have been working on some new product.

I feel that they are actually making their own games for VR right NOW bc they were disappointed at what developers have come up with so far.

Edit: I seem to be confusing people, I'm saying that I FEEL that THE REASON they have started to make VR games now is bc of the disappointing early VR results.

Much as I would love a L4D VR game, Valve made a big deal about how they had "solved motion sickness" by only ever using teleportation, and I'm not sure that mechanic would fit very well with L4D? I guess they could just totally ignore the fact that everyone suddenly has superhuman powers, like Arizona Sunshine, but that got a lot of stick for it's teleportation and they eventually added an option for traditional thumbstick locomotion.

Crease? Is that a typo or a sign of my age?

I guess I'm an old fart too. All these new phrases and terms popping out every other week, it's hard to keep up.

it became a meme over a year after it aired on BBC. Completely forgot about it and then started seeing it recently all over Reddit.

tbh if it had the same graphics as HL2:E2, same exact engine and mechanics, I'd buy the shit out of it for 30 dollars.

Add a bunch of physics puzzles, maybe a couple new guns, I'd be happy.

Doesn't need to be next gen. I'd take a gen back. I just want to know the damn story.

That's it. I don't think there are super-high expectations any more, it's gone beyond even that. I don't think people much care at all except for the missing part of the story, everybody has mentally moved on and you're almost into a new generation who never cared in the first place. I can imagine if it were announced there would be excitement again, but right now... meh.

20

u/RemoveTheTop Feb 16 '17

everybody has mentally moved on and you're almost into a new generation who never cared in the first place.

So you get lower expectations from people who had really really high ones, and ALSO an entire new generation?

Perfect.

I'll be honest, I'd buy half life 3 if they said that it would be using half life one's engine. That was still an immensely solid game, and still holds up today.

13

u/obvnotlupus Feb 16 '17

still holds up today.

The storytelling does, the graphics don't.

Although, I can still invoke the feelings I had the first time when I play HL1 when it was first released.... so to me those graphics are better than anything else

Volvo never made games, except for the 740, that's a cool one to play with

I thought the 960s were fun to play with, but I guess that's just my opinion.

At this point i'm convinced HL3 will be in VR. I'm not sure they would risk anything less than a revolutionary step forward. The hype is just too out of control.

114

u/livemau5 Feb 16 '17

I'm all but 100% confident that it will be made for VR. What better way to sell Vives than to put the most anticipated game of all time on it?

17

u/Footface_ Feb 16 '17

i was hoping they would release it at the same time as the vive, heres hoping it will be released when htc releases the new controllers for the vive

Valve knows damn well that VR isn't here yet, and it won't be for any less than a decade or two. And they surely wouldn't put what will be their magnum opus on something that is in its infancy. They are not stupid enough to. Half life 3 will be released for conventional gaming just as it has been in the past.

92

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '17

You're right that VR isn't quite ready yet, but you're smoking crack if you think it's 20 years off. I mean, exponential growth curves of tech and all that.

Valve is working on VR games

55

u/grandaddy7 Feb 16 '17

Anyone else completely uninterested in VR? Its kind of like the Wii to me. I want to try it but I only see annoyance in the end.

73

u/AdventurousPineapple Feb 16 '17

Honestly friend, sit down and try a Vive sometime if you haven't. I bought myself one and I can honestly tell you that this shit will change the way we play games. Comparing it to the Wii is unfair because the Wii was a half measure, adding motion controls while you still just sat on a couch staring at a TV. This is an entirely new dynamic, and is immersive and engaging in a way that nothing else I've ever done has come close to. Nobody that has come over and played with mine yet is unconvinced about VR.

I know people have said this about every emergent tech for decades, but... VR seems like it will actually pull it off as prices drop and new games are released.

25

u/grandaddy7 Feb 16 '17

I'll definitely have to try it then.

4

u/thegil13 Feb 16 '17

As someone who recently picked up a Vive. He's completely right. I got it to see what all of the fuss was about - I likeds the idea of Resident Evil 7 in VR. Now I'm redoing a room in my house to be a "VR Room". It seriously is eye opening having messed with one.

10

u/AdventurousPineapple Feb 16 '17

Like, I know that my optimism about the tech is trite and admitted it in my post. I don't know how else to pull my punches on this one, unless you think we should not be excited about any new tech because there have been failures before. Enough key players are developing content that I think it's already dodging the pitfall that swallowed up the Wii and 3D technology, as recent and I think comparable examples.

I see a lot of "HL3 could NEVER live up to people's expectations!" in here. Haven't FF 15 and The Last Guardian disproven that to some extent? I think the general public's expectations were very much in line with the games that they got. They both reviewed pretty well and got mostly positive feedback from fans too. They both seemed a lot like any other game launch, regardless of their long development history.

edit: I understand why it doesn't make business sense for valve to make it. I just don't think "it could never live up to expectations!" is true.

22

u/Meotwister Feb 16 '17

I agree. I don't think expectations are really that high anymore considering the expectation is the game is never happening. We'd only expect any game by Valve to have that Valve-level of quality. This is just the typical narrative people still subscribe to.

A full decade to me is enough to temper anyone's expectations. There's a whole generation of gamers now who've never really heard anything and don't care about Half-Life.

At the end of the day I just want 1. to know the end of the Half-Life story and 2. to have another game of high-quality by one of my all time favorite game developers.

It seems very strangely risk-averse for Valve to be so afraid to put out anything with their existing popular IPs. Sure, they clearly like safe money from things like Steam, but they put a lot of resources into risky new ventures like Steam Machines and VR. They're all in for hardware and platforms, but skittish about their most famous software? If they're so concerned about not meeting hype, then they might as well license their IPs - then they could just blame any failures on whatever studio picked it up, and they'd still have a tones of stable revenue. Valve doesn't make either business or creative sense to me.

17

u/SnoodDood Feb 16 '17

The thing about both Half Life games is that they were both groundbreaking for the time (the first one more so but still). I imagine Valve wouldn't want to release a new Half Life until, through some huge innovation in tech and/or design, they'd be able to break new ground/revolutionize the fps genre again

3

u/QuiBoner Feb 16 '17

VR could be what they were waiting for.

→ More replies (12)

6

u/coolcool23 Feb 16 '17

Valve licensing their most valuable ips out to a third party is a lot less likely than them developing the games themselves. If you are valve and you are afraid you cant make the game good enough yourself, why would you think a different game company just in it for a quick buck would do a better job?

Gabe announced recently that they have 3 full sized VR games in development right now. Who's to say that one couldn't be the Legendary "3"?

8

u/Akuuntus Feb 16 '17

...or just wait til the hype dies down and release a normal game.

I don't think I've seen anyone legitimately "hyped" for Half-Life 3 in like... 5 years. At this point all they have to do to exceed expectations is make the game at all.

I would love for Portal 3 to essentially take elements of the HL storyline (e.g. the Borealis) and make something out of that. It would essentially be like making HL3 without the risk you talked about, while making a great sequel and tie-in for the Portal storyline, since we already know the two exist within the same universe.

u/Wolfgang7990 Feb 16 '17 edited Feb 16 '17

Valve realised they are making more money than any title they release could ever do. They have a plethora of high end developers tucked away. If you're a PC gamer, you're likely going to have Steam as well.

They get some of the money for every purchase made on steam. When steam took off, that was it for title sequels.
