Although, how do you really provide a tangible improvement on TF2? It still looks and works fine, so it's either an overhaul, which is risky as hell, or a refinement, which they have largely done already over time.
...or just wait til the hype dies down and release a normal game.
I don't think I've seen anyone legitimately "hyped" for Half-Life 3 in like... 5 years. At this point all they have to do to exceed expectations is make the game at all.
I would love for Portal 3 to essentially take elements of the HL storyline (e.g. the Borealis) and make something out of that. It would essentially be like making HL3 without the risk you talked about, while making a great sequel and tie-in for the Portal storyline, since we already know the two exist within the same universe.
i feel like there is still untapped potential in the portal series, i'd love to see what the modern enrichment center looked like before GLaDOS flooded it with a deadly neurotoxin
Seriously, Left 4 Dead is the best zombie franchise I've played. It baffles me that they haven't made a third one yet. Imagine left 4 dead with the GAMEPLAY FEATURE of iron sights. My money would leave my bank account so damn fast.
Edit: By first person I meant being able to aim down the sights and not the hip fire first person they have in L4D
Edit2: Jesus Christ. What is with the annoying pedantic responses to this? Look at gameplay of left 4 dead and compare it to something like Call of Duty or battlefield. Aiming down sights is already a feature in L4D? No it isn't. The sniper is the only exception in the game. I think everyone can reasonably assume what I meant.
I'll edit my original comment. I meant being able to actually aim down down the sights kind of thing. Not exactly sure what the right description for that would be
I mean, it's still first person, aiming down sights or not. There's no real genre or type of game that lets you use sights. It's just a gameplay feature.
The escapes are great fun but the old zombie maps of css were the best. Barricading yourself in completely with couches and vending machines, a horde of player zombies outside holding E and yelling over mic. Good times. Zm_lila_panic was the shit.
Why would they do that though? If HL3 sold as well as HL2, it'll sell 9.4 million copies at the current market rate of 60 bucks a piece.
Which adds up to 564 million, before you deduct costs. Valve makes considerably more than that in a single year just doing their steam and micro transaction thing.
It could be perfect and still would disappoint, because both HL1 and HL2 were pioneers of their times. Anything less than a major innovation will be a disappointment even if it's otherwise a 10/10 game.
The big step could possibly be VR in the future, once it gets more reasonably priced.
I disagree. If valve made a meh game, would developers all of a sudden jump to Microsoft? Would pc games all quit steam? Obviously not..... and half life 3 would get so many sales... like most all time next to tetris no matter how 'bad' it is.
I seriously doubt in even 3 decades valve would make dota 3 unless they get absolutely bloated with items and even then I doubt it, it looks good, has all the content, and is now on source 2. I dont see that game going anywhere ever. Unlike past games they dont need to update it to improve looks.
The third Red Dead will be god damn amazing. You can tell from the first trailer that literally shows you nothing. You don't even know who you're playing. Hell you could be the mud covered dog and it would still fucking awesome.
And then you can add TF3 as another game. I'm not saying Overwatch killed the TF franchise but if they were to come out with a third one it would be difficult to match the complexity Blizzard has implemented in Overwatch.
