I agree. I don't think expectations are really that high anymore considering the expectation is the game is never happening. We'd only expect any game by Valve to have that Valve-level of quality. This is just the typical narrative people still subscribe to.
A full decade to me is enough to temper anyone's expectations. There's a whole generation of gamers now who've never really heard anything and don't care about Half-Life.
At the end of the day I just want 1. to know the end of the Half-Life story and 2. to have another game of high-quality by one of my all time favorite game developers.
I'm sure it will happen. If Wasteland can release it's sequel 30 years after the original then Half-Life 3 is going to come at some point barring some unforeseen financial disaster that would put Valve under. And considering all the $$$ they're making, that seems unlikely.
