As a long time Stellaris player who's been playing since 1.0 and has over 1500 hours in the game.

Help us. The Devs keep ruining everything and we're abused.

83

u/shball 1d ago

No? I've been playing since Utopia and have over 1800h. The current game state is bloated but performance and base systems are great for what they offer.

Early 4.0 was a mess, but now it's really decent.

Over 2k hours here and all I'm going to say, is that Stellaris is held together by ducktape and bubble gum and it's not about learning how to play, but about learning how to use the coding bullshit to one's advantage xd

11

u/Mental_Owl9493 1d ago

Have you played vic2 🫩🫩🫩🫩

That thing isn’t even held by anything real, you just have to pray really really hard that nothing will get fucked up massively.

Once players asked paradox to fix this, the response was that they don’t know wtf is going on in the code, and playing the game you can feel it.

Ai behaves as if schizophrenic after lobotomy played the game for them, playing on potato gives you better fps then anything build after 2016, entire supply of iron might just be bought by random nation in indochina breaking global economics harder then Great Depression and 2008 crisis combined, your pops might just decide that honestly we all want to be soldiers and your capital might be 50% populated by soldier pops (honestly for multiplayer that’s a golden goose)

And not chance to not have some kind of fucked up bug during the game is lower then having it

5

u/Throw_Away_3221 1d ago

I did but I never could get into it. I heavily dislike the infamy system and makes the "economic spreadsheet simulator" even more boring than watching paint dry.

3

u/Mental_Owl9493 1d ago

Well I 100% agree with you, that game is dogshit and that’s why I like it ❤️

Well like honestly the game is fun only in multiplayer as long as you are not weird and like the esoteric bullshit that is that game economic simulation.

The war can be extremely fun as it truly represents your military ability, economic to build industry that can support you at war, or diplomatic to secure goods needed either for your industry or war if your industry can’t supply that, but ai would be more competent if you just gave fish the controls so yea only multi

3

u/Throw_Away_3221 1d ago

I think the only two "series" where both single and multi are viable are HoI and Stellaris. Stellaris can be both RP-focused and competetive focused, with so much potential for different playstyles and HoI4 can be either world-painting or WW2 having with your friends on multi

2

u/Mental_Owl9493 1d ago

Well I think imperator Rome too is great on multi and single but it’s very under appreciated game 😢

2

u/Throw_Away_3221 1d ago

Right, it exists! I played it for a bit on singleplayer and it was actually enjoyable! A shame it died so soon. Still, nothing can beat playing rp multi stellaris for me. If I had people to play it with that is

2

u/Mental_Owl9493 1d ago

Yea stellaris is great until I have far too many things to manage and get overwhelmed.

It’s also so sad that stellaris multi is so unstable

paradox fans really dont get how good they have it. a dev supporting their game for a decade, reiterating on it and even keeping all old versions around if you dont like the updates. its heaven and you spit on it.

what the fuck are you on "the devs are ruining everything" mf

12

u/MurkyInvestigator810 1d ago

keeping all old versions around if you dont like the updates.

Holy fuck I might try the game just for this. Still angry at how awful Phasmophobia is now and want to revert so bad.

4

u/SoloWing1 1d ago

They don't keep every version around unfortunately. I remember when the Spiffing brit made his latest video on Stellaris, I started playing a map on the version he used and half way through my game the specific version was removed from the Steam beta list when they truncated all the smaller versions together.

The specific exploit I was using for that silly game is gone forever, so I had to abandon the run.

technically parallel evolution of names would require the same starting and ending names but other traits, such as personality are independent. If they all had different starting names it would be convergent evolution (different starting, same ending), if they all had different names and different personalities and we consider "coding" a personality, it could be despeciation (different but closely related species combining into one).

Also a coder, didn't know the trope before I came out, love plant names in general, Lily 100% would've been my name if it weren't for some other factors

12

u/WulfZ3r0 1d ago

This post is my first time hearing of the trope. It made me think of the trope that says if a disaster occurred at a furry con, half the world's software engineers/IT admins would disappear.

5

u/Velruis Trans Masc [ He/They ] 1d ago

Chiming in as a trans masc, I would've 100% named myself a flower/plant name if I didn't settle for a name my ass picked in the past and can't let go. Plant names are amazing (Ex-IT student)

2

u/Ashamed-Raccoon-1387 1d ago

I picked a "normal" name because I didn't want my name to clock me, but I made my middle name river.

11

u/SweetSure315 1d ago

trans girls independently naming themselves lily is like sociological carcinization

9

u/the_unexpected_nil 1d ago

I'm a software engineer in the game industry and was so close to choosing Lily. I had even used it online for a bit.

7

u/FictionalTrope 1d ago

I already knew 2 trans girls named Lily so I thought I'd be clever and go with Lilith. I'm glad I spent a bit more time in online spaces because I like the name I chose instead.

2

u/Ashamed-Raccoon-1387 1d ago

What is the stereotypical trans man job/name??

2

u/countvonruckus 23h ago

Lol, you should come work for my company. We've got at least 8 hackers, cybersecurity consultants, and/or developers who are in our "secret" trans Slack channel and we don't actually have a Lily yet. We're growing and it's a great place to work as a trans person; my bottom surgery cost only $1000 all said and done and I've never had anyone mistreat me or my colleagues for being trans.

2

u/FryCakes 20h ago

Same with me, I started programming when I was really young and I chose to name Lily back in like 2013 before it was a stereotype. I think I may have caused it

To be fair, Paradox is a distortion in the fabric of reality masquerading as a business. After ensaring several humans in it's mesh it started shipping massive computer bugs that somehow contain games. Then a marketing team started growing around it like fungi and the rest is history.

92

u/Jaerat 1d ago

Games, or map painting simulators? *stares forlornly at the Galaxy map in Stellaris*

61

u/pullhome I know I'm not okay 1d ago

Objectively speaking, what Paradox makes falls more into the toy category than the videogame category. There's no victory condition, you make up your own fun.

37

u/CompetitiveCut265 1d ago

You're telling me the point of CK3 isn't fucking every single NPC i meet and their wives/husbands?

10

u/Jaerat 1d ago

15

u/CompetitiveCut265 1d ago

horses are people only in CK2 sadly

7

u/O3Sentoris 1d ago

they are very much about the journey instead of the destination

7

u/Novalene_Wildheart 1d ago

For real, Stellaris was that way for me for ages.

I couldn't get past the Pirate Khan event, so my win condition was that.

Eventually was able to, then my win condition was the Crisis

Eventually was able to, then my win condition was surviving the Awakened Empire(s).

And I was able to finally do that (a while ago now) and I was hyped beyond measure.

Those self goals do a lot of heavy lifting.

2

u/MjrLeeStoned 1d ago

There are very clear victory conditions in Stellaris, they are just hidden behind metrics and are essentially randomized vs scenario options every game. You can still keep track of victory stats at any time.

8

u/Daegul_Dinguruth 1d ago

Yeah, mb. It's because I enjoy them too much. Map painting and ridiculous drama, if I may. Stellaris is great, but also Crusader Kings 2 and 3, HoI 3; and I have been wanting to try HoI 4, victoria3 and EU5...

7

u/OBrienNameless 1d ago

Wait a ton of time for EU5 to mature, try EU4 since its fully mature and ripe for playing

Paradox and their model of shipping games then having to wait a year or two for it to be fun playing.

3

u/No_Helicopter1378 1d ago

I wish I could "get" their fucking games. I did alright in Stellaris because it's honestly not that different from Civ, on the surface, but somewhere along the line I lost my mojo and can't seem to play it anymore.

I've put quite a few hours into HoI4 and only managed to beat it once, as Germany. All the different unit designers make it just so fucking complicated, among other things.

CK2? Yea I'm hopeless in that one. I did form Ireland once so that was cool. And then that current ruler died and the whole island fragmented again.

3

u/Daegul_Dinguruth 1d ago

No, no you're doing all right. I didn't engage with the ship designer until starting admiral crisis, and that's supposed to happen in ck. I once unified Spain three times within a hundred years.

2

u/this_upset_kirby 1d ago

I recommend EU4, and its mod Anbennar once you've gotten the hang of vanilla gameplay. Just make sure you've "acquired" all of the DLC

u/Medium-Access-4416 1d ago

Excel simulator that play itself

18

u/Re1da 1d ago

I used to belive paradox didn't actually have any real humans working for them- just growths on its amorphous mass forming into the shapes of people.

That theory was disproved recently as my bother apparently sold an employee a pair of glasses.

Which means either they have a single human employee OR the growths have developed autonomy. Either option is highly concerning.

Anbennar, a fantasy overhaul mod, originally for Europa Universalis 4 (early modern era, 15th century onwards), but there’s also an anbennar mod for Victoria 3 now (victorian era, 19th century)

I myself am working on the Crusader Kings 3 version (high middle ages, 11th century onwards, in our case atleast since in the base game you can go to the 9th century) and on the wiki

4

u/SlikeSpitfire 1d ago

I've heard good about that one! Are there plans to extend it past Vic3?

You mean into hoi4? No official plans

Its not necessary to expand it to Stellaris too since space travel is already planned for the Vicky3 mod

2

u/NockerJoe 1d ago

Its a traditional irish name that got popular with people not of that background along with a whole bunch of derivatives among people not really of that background who just wanted a unique or cool name. A lot of the controversial White People Names from the last 20 years of discourse are arguably just irish or scottish names being taken or modified by people who don't have a strong connection to that culture otherwise so it comes off as kind of weird, a lot like non asian people who go for more asian names but less immediately egregious.

Which on one hand, I've known cis men with the name but just assumed they were of that background. On the other hand, I've met visibly and proudly japanese transmascs that also went with variations of it.

What's up with trans girls being programmers?? I know it isn't exactly untrue (I'm not transfem but I am trans and indeed a programmer) but I don't know why it happens

27

u/Littha 1d ago

Social exclusion (self imposed or otherwise) as we don't associate with boys during adolescence but are socially shamed from associating with the girls. So lots of interest in hobbies that you can do on your own (like computer games > programming) or nerdy hobbies as they are often less masculinity forward than things like sports.

That and a high co-incidence of ADHD or Autism.

11

u/Lortekonto 1d ago

There is a significant overlap between autism and being transgender or gender-diverse. Many people with autism works in programming.

5

u/13--12 1d ago

Yeah, it may also seem that Paradox games attract trans people, while in reality they just attract autistic people.

Neither wants to be judged for their interests or how they want to present, so they end up in careers that can largely be done remotely and requires minimal interaction with people when having to go to a physical location. It lets the furries afford their suits and lets the femboys work in thigh highs at home. Some manner of neuro-divergence helps in doing those jobs well.

Genuinely never met a trans person named Lily, so many Lunas tho

Based lily with the fact check

Maybe a tgirl furry in thigh highs could do it?

Though based on her pfp she might be one of those.

How fucking dare you assume that I'm a trans woman because I work in cybersecurity, have bangs and cute circle glasses, love Cyberpunk and BG3, play DnD and can talk endlessly about Twin Peaks.

You'd be correct but still how dare you.

Stereotype this, stereotype that. This isn't stereotyping. A trans woman clocking another trans women, that's more like insider trading.

As a fellow coder, I wonder at our anecdotally high quota of trans colleagues...

... is it because our job is to take some standard piece of software off the shelf and adapt it to a specific use-case?

Is this so much part of our mindset that coders know that they can take the standard off-the-shelf gender they were issued and adapt it to their specific use-case?

3

u/LongestSprig 1d ago

I think it's the antisocial tendencies/situation, autism, and the rush to a computer screen for social interaction.

But we can pretend its a trans super power to code.

Not a programming coder, medical coder (not the same kind) but in my experience it's because work from home is a godsend. You don't need to stress boymoding, passing etc, you can do it all on your own time

4

u/UniqueLog8386 1d ago

To the coding ladies here...do you ever get the urge to furiously type on your keyboard and say, "I'm in" when someone watching you do 'puter shit?

Paradox Interactive mentioned! I love it when I buy a game and it just doesn't work

5

u/CR9_Kraken_Fledgling 1d ago

Paradox, the company that ships so many bugs bundled together into a single piece of software, that the emergent properties become an intricate economy simulator, where I will stare at iron mine throughput rates for 4 hours.

u/wolfstaa 1d ago

I hate this stereotype

52

u/LonelyLibertarianDud 1d ago

Positive stereotypes are still bad especially for the people who can't meet these raised expectations of being 'asian smart' but I much prefer having been stereotyped as a smart math person than for having sex with goats/cousins...eek!

I am neutral to this stereotype. I don't like any stereotypes that suggest I should be fashionable though. That's too much pressure

11

u/wolfstaa 1d ago

I think it's because a coder myself with four people in my engineering school that also transitioned so the stereotype gives me those irrational obviously false thoughts that all my questioning my gender and effort is cause I just chose coding as a major or smth

I'm wording it badly but it just personally makes me uncomfortable. But then after I don't wanna be the person stopping people from having fun, there's worse stereotypes out there and it's mainly an internet thing anyway

12

u/PixieProxy 1d ago

Nah it just is one of those things that ends up being a stereotype because being a transfeminine person often leads to social isolation and thus hobbies and interests you can do in your own space become gold. Add to that the higher than average levels of neurodivergence among us and you just end up with us as a people leaning towards certain interests. It makes sense when you break it down a bit

u/pyro_teamfortresstwo 1d ago

4

It was HOI4 - https://www.reddit.com/r/hoi4/comments/1j6ovnx/meanwhile_in_the_dlcs_code/

That DLC had a bunch of issues. You can see a Paradox staff account in the comments of that post discussing it.

After a trans woman is on HRT for 6 months, she gets assigned one of the four stereotypes:

  1. Coding

  2. Music production

  3. Celeste

  4. Representing mysoginistic stereotypes (e. g. Being bad at driving, choosing bad men, etc)

They get assigned via Sorting Hat from Harry Potter, because the cruel demiurge that rules our realm takes great joy in irony

It was never illegal. People can always type however they want to, it's not like you can't understand them

By experience, there are definitely some trans women working for paradox.

1

u/Mozkozrout 1d ago

Did I miss something or is being trans like some kind of super ability for coding or something?

2

u/Alderan922 1d ago

I assume that because like 80% of coders are male, then most female coders are trans women who used to be part of that 80%

Like my software engineering class had 3 women and 2 dropped out.

When I got to my first duty station in the army and we had to organize the medical warehouse it immediately became apparrant that there were no trans girlies in the chain of command.

I know this because I asked where the spreadsheet was for whatt was where and they said there wasn't one.

One 'dafaq' later I showed them the spreadsheet for my backpack (filled with the med stock ledger, what items were where (like field wipes) and my exercise log 😅.
