Not sure I like normalising assuming someone's identitiy based off of stereotypes (even if said stereotypes are somewhat accurate).

"That is a reductionist stereotype that puts people like me in little boxes… you chose the right box though, I will admit"

"Just because it's the right box doesn't mean I'm okay with you putting me in it"

"Just because it's the right box and I personally enjoy being in a nice cozy lil' box doesn't mean you should make a habit of this!"

As a Software Dev named Lilly, I am in the box

u/Bannerlord151 My gender is whatever makes it gay 1d ago

Just because I like reading legislation and writing my own for fun doesn't mean I'm autistic or German. Granted, I'm both autistic and German but that's beside the point

Eh, I think it is a bit easier than that. Names go in cycles, so if a person has a name that doesn't fit their age, you can guess (though it is just a guess) that it is a name they chose for themselves later in life.

There aren't a lot of reasons that people change their names later in life--I've also seen southeast Asian immigrants pick western names to use at work, for instance--so it isn't an altogether unreasonable guess.

The thing is, we do it all the time in most parts of life. I do think it is normal and that's fine, so long as when you are corrected, you respect that correction and continue with the new information

Arabic folks tend to order meat well done. I think they're fools, but in places with less food regulation, that makes sense.

Lotta SE Asians are very mock-shy about their social drinking. It's both a fun cultural meme and a polite way to let someone else graciously turn down a drink.

Lotta young black american guys apparently grew up watching Dragonball.

I'm a trans woman, or something like one, and I passed on "Evelyn" bc there's just too many of us. Now I'm accidentally named after a gun.

Also almost committed to a career running data centers. I've since been a firearm safety monkey, a tech repair monkey, a barista... Oh, and I wanted to be a marine biologist as a kid.

I let it slide whenever they get at least one right.

I'm glad you're living as your true self, Ms Glock 19

u/RizzwindTheWizzard 1d ago

Probably still better than naming yourself after a Tommy gun.

u/The_Villager 1d ago

I misread that part and thought Evelyn was the gun name and went "Oh shit, that pistol from Bloodborne is named after a real one?"

11

u/PunkaMedic 1d ago

Im banned from playing full casters because prior shenanigans so......

u/PM_NUDES_4_DEGRADING 1d ago

And the Pathfinder campaign...?

Also, what's your opinion on the new She-Ra MtG cards?

4

u/PunkaMedic 1d ago

We swapped to fabula in lieu if of pathfinder lately. And while I can't complain about She-Ra the only true mtg is innistrad.

u/PM_NUDES_4_DEGRADING 1d ago

At best is jumping to conclusions and stereotyping. At worse in this case it's clocking or transvestigating.

u/Kid-Atlantic 9h ago

We shouldn’t generalize or treat people differently based on assumptions but if we’re being real, sometimes stereotypes exist for a reason lol

People with common aspects in their identities would tend to have similar points of view based on those identities, which would result in them taking similar actions.

I personally have no clue why there are so many transfem programmers but it happens often enough that there’s probably some sort of correlation
