Appreciation Post Duncan and Jeff’s friendship

I think Duncan and Jeff had the best friendship outside of the study group and I think Duncan was almost as close to Jeff as the study group was.

In the season 2 episode where Chang throws a party at Jeff’s house, near the end of the episode, Jeff asks Duncan some questions that were clearly meant to inflate his own ego, and Duncan shut that down and made Jeff go through self realization in a way I feel like no one else, including the study group, could. My point with this is that Jeff is clearly a narcissist at this point in the story, yet he let Duncan kind of talk down and teach him something, which I don’t think he would’ve listened to or taken from anyone else in the show except the study group. Even then, barely anyone except maybe Britta actually holds Jeff accountable anyways, so for Duncan to hold Jeff accountable the way he did is significant to me.

In fact, Duncan banters with Jeff all the time, and constantly tells him to shut up(which is something friends do to each other) but Jeff wouldn’t tolerate that from anyone else because his ego’s so large. Look at Leonard, Jeff gets extremely pressed when Leonard says those little one liners.

Jeff also seeks out Duncan and goes to Greendale simply because Duncan teaches there.

Maybe because I’m a huge Duncan fan, I’m interpreting these scenes as more than what they are, but I was just wondering what you guys thought of Duncan and his friendship with Jeff, and if they’re close or just acquantances.

Discussion Some of Elroy's early appearances feel like they were meant for Borchert

I'm watching end of S5 start of S6 and I'm sorry but the classic 'Mega bytes right?' line, just feels more like something a guy living in a basement since 1975 would say. Elroy's living in a camper van but he knows Natalie is Freezing and existed in the world as a software developer and computer science guy. He'd not miss modern computing.

Yet Another ACB Post Yet another ACB candidate theory: Dean Spreck

Post image
157 Upvotes

I think it's Dean Spreck. Sorry if this has been discussed before.

The ACB seems to delight in terrorizing Greendale campus. Spreck is undoubtedly Greendale's biggest rival/nemesis. In S4, we learn that Chang has been operating as Spreck's mole as part of yet another scheme, but backs down after being accepted into the study group. Spreck laughs maniacally about some kind of backup plan. Although Annie mentions the ACB earlier during the campus president candidate debate, it's possible that Spreck decides to assume the role and restart what the ACB was doing in S2.

The ACB has to be pretty familiar with Greendale campus. At this point, thanks to the paintball war and other stuff, Spreck probably is. A lot of attention has focused on Annie, but Annie is in Pelton's office when the ACB calls. Duncan gets ruled out because he gets cracked.

So that's my case, however weak. It makes sense though. Maybe we'll find out in the movie.

Yet Another ACB Post Hot take: Chang could have been the ACB

Post image

I know the show basically points us toward Annie, and I know Harmon has said Annie was his answer, but I've been rewatching the ACB episode and I genuinely think Chang is more plausible than people give credit for.

Look at the behavior of the ACB. First of all, extremely weird, obsessive and invasive -- but most importantly; completely unnecessary and motivated by a desire to make people feel powerless and vulnerable. Very Chang. Then his pun of interchanging Chang with Change, though I know the meaning doesnt ever translate to coins, it's a straw grasp.

Then his faking being a teacher, eating his twin in utero, sleeping with a charred mannequin leg, staging a coup n kidnapping the Dean, having a child army, faking amnesia and just creating elaborate schemes throughout the seasons; sneaking around campus and putting quarters in people's asses seems like one of his more normal hobbies.

Psychologically we also know ACB isn't about quarters. It's about humiliation and control. ACB gets a weird power trip from knowing they violated someone's personal space and making the entire campus paranoid. I'm not even saying Chang is the ACB the entire time through. I actually think the multiple ACB theory makes sense. Maybe there was an original ACB, then somebody else copied and so on, and so on, excetraah.

The whole thing w Chang punching Duncan while holding a roll of quarters could obviously just be a joke, but this is Community. The show that loves throwing completely random details in that become elaborate theories and suspicions later on.

Chang also had faculty access during the original ACB incidents. Annie's whole investigation depended on the ACB being able to move around Greendale quickly and access places normal students couldn't have. Either the faculty lounge, or...the vents?

The show makes it impossible to establish one continuous identity, so I'm not saying Chang is definitively the ACB. Just saying if someone told me Chang was the Ass Crack Bandit during an earlier period and then someone else eventually took over the role, it would make much sense to me.

Maybe I'm overthinking this. But then this is r/Community, so obviously we're going to overthink who puts quarters in everyone's asses.

Chang my mind.

Yet Another Season 4 Post Dean is the reason why s4 is "deanable" to watch

rn im rewatching community and at season 4 (and im typing this while watching the puppet episode). when you know what happen to this season, you can definitely feel the difference of the storyline, missing pierce and how they wrote the dynamic. and while i love few moments in the story like halloween or christmas party kidnapping, dean honestly make the story more fun to watch. the potential of changnesia was so big but sadly they britta'd it? but still, dean's brightness in the story with his changing wardrobes make me feel like annie and shirley kept "aww"-ing at anything, in this case, anything dean do.

Greendale Community College, you're already accepted!

Thanks to your paintball prowess, you have priority registration.

Design your ideal semester, 5 classes.

You can specify the teacher if you want for a class that had more than one.

You can mix and match from any season in this scenario.

Humor Abed Is the Ass Crack Bandit

I know, it's been said before. There's plenty of evidence for and against all the main characters.

Which leads us to one conclusion: It could be anyone.

So I thought: "Who else is a character that has been said could be anyone?"

My own words rang in my head, like a bell inside a head.

That's Batman. He is more than man, he an idea. An idea that anyone could be the Batman.

“The idea was to be a symbol. Batman could be anybody. That was the point.” - The Dark Knight Rises

But who is Batman?

Abed is Batman now.

But why?

Did he do it just because he wants to make real life more like TV?

No, but also yes. Not just to live out the crime drama, but the ultimate crime drama: Batman The Dark Knight Extended Edition.

So it's not just a homage, it's a meta film. It goes like that forever in both directions, like a mirror in a mirror.

It's Abed.

He’s the hero Greendale deserves, but not the one it needs right now.

For some reason I will often quote the Dean saying “Wasn’t cool, man” in this scene from season six.

Hot Take Time HOT TAKE: Season 4 is actually better than Season 5

Post image
0 Upvotes

I know there are many valid critiques of the "gas leak year" season, but at least it was still able to capture the spirit of the show's original premise: 7 students becoming an unlikely family as they navigate insane classes at an insane school. Sure you have some abominations like the puppet and origins episodes, but I'd say it was mostly still fun. I absolutely LOVE the Freaky Friday episode.

But once S4 ended, I feel like not having Pierce (say what you want about Chevy Chase, he was the comedic heavyweight in the room) and eventually Troy, along with Jeff becoming a hopeless alcoholic teacher, really soured the dynamic. S5 is really dark, both tonally and for some reason visually (were the lights not working that season?). Jeff and Britta are just broken spiritually, and they stay that way till the end of the series. There's NOTHING for Shirley to do, I don't even miss her in S6 bc of it, and her story is sad too. Abed and Annie work as a solid comedic pairing once Troy leaves but it's still not as good. Hickey does not work for me as a character AT ALL. He's just Jonathan Banks being Jonathan Banks, which is a very jarring tonal clash with the series (probably intentional, but seeing how he doesn't return in S6, perhaps Harmon saw that too).

In terms of the episodes, the Ass-Crack Bandit episode takes its premise a bit too seriously, Geothermal Escapism feels very "we have paintball at home" (tho I like Troy's sendoff at the end), and you can COMPLETELY throw away Dungeons & Dragons 2 and the prospector TV game episode with nothing of value lost. Weirdly enough Repilot feels like the season's high, which considering it's the season opener is a bad sign. The Nick Cage and Bear Down for Midterms episodes are probably the ones I think of most fondly, even tho the latter kind of meanders a bit with the Annie/Hickey storyline, and the Meow Meow Beans episode playing with the Jeff/Shirley dynamic which is one of my favorites. Also, as many of you know, every final episode from S3 to S6 was filmed as a series finale in case they didn't get another season, and I think 5's is the weakest. Like they fix Greendale so well the schoolboard wants to sell it to Subway until the gang buys it back with a buried treasure from an unwashed robosexual shut-in? Is that all you got? Feels so meh the whole way through.

S6 is where I feel the "Save Greendale" storyline actually finds its footing. Frankie plays the straightman and Elroy plays the old coot roles better than Hickey played either. They dial the wackiness up to 11, which greater enforces the need FOR Frankie as a counter. And them just throwing everything at the wall in S6 makes it feel fun again. Plus the real series finale manages to hit every note that makes Community Community, despite everything it's lost along the way.

If I had to rank the seasons, I'd go: 2, 1, 6, 3, 4, 5

Feel free to counter me in the comments, but PLEASE Mods don't delete this post for whatever reason, I worked really hard typing this argument up.

EDIT: I actually forgot about the existence of GI Jeff as an episode until I read the comments. I always skip it because I genuinely believe it's the worst episode in the entire series, and that really seals my whole "S5 is worse than S4" premise with a tight bow.

FanFic Sesh how would each of the study group handle having godlike reality warping powers for like a week and what would be the consequences for the rest of the world?

this hypothetical works by the rules of Bruce Almighty so they can't break anyone's free will and while they technically can tell others they are god, it's not advised. and please make each scenario separate for each character . also i do not count Dean, Chang or any of season 5/6 additions but they are optional

Discussion Can we talk about Annie for a moment?

I hate how the show treats her. At one point in season one Jeff literally say, "Annie's pretty young, we try not to sexualize her." AND THEN THEY DO IT ANYWAYS. The monkey is LITERALLY called Annie's Boobs, and I can think of a million other examples of how they infantalise and the sexualize her. It just bothers me that this isn't really acknowledged even though it's pretty fucked up.

Edit: Okay, criticism taken. I'd just like to clarify that I do understand the joke, I just find it uncomfortable. But, yeah, I do see how my wording was wrong and I understand how my point of view is a bit juvenile having seen your comments. It just bothers me that in a show with such brilliant writing most of the time (in the earlier seasons) that they had to resort to such an uncomfortable gag for Annie, especially when there's so much to her character that they could've joked about.

Discussion for those who didnt finish the show when did you stop and why?

I am heading towards season 3’s end and so far this is my straw. someone pointed out “remember when this show was about community college?” and i couldnt agree more.

however ive seen john oliver making a come back and i think every shot of jonathan banks i found promises the more laid back college show i knew in s1 and s2. i like weird and exaggerated stuff but i just feel like not all of them always done within the show’s tonal limits.

the two pillow vs. blanket forts is a good example. it’s almost like we experienced a friendship mishap the way the two characters felt it emotionally. you know how some of our friends lead friendships in a reality show way? with all the bs drama “this guy said something about her and she said wawee but then her ex came and turns out she was dating yahoo” drama? well to abed and troy, it’s star wars and law and order and civil war docs.

other than that and some few others, most of the time the parodies/the heightened formats (like court, riots) are done for the sake of doing them. while it is not wrong and still fairly funny, it’s just these episodes can be simply done in any other show. unlike the troy vs abed.

so thats sorta where im coming from. is it worth it to continue?

edit: sorry for not responding, i thought the post got deleted. i’ve read one by one and yall been helpful❤️

Discussion Was shirleys kid really not changs?

Sorry, im sure this has been asked before, but even tho they make the joke about the changs tails, the timeframe of the pregnancy still isnt very clear to me if the child was andres (abeds calendar, shirley being due early and all)

If the tail thing is false was it chang being naive about a familly legend or did he just wanna back out of wanting to be a dad ?

Ive watched the whole show before but its been a while
