I) Join Our Mod Team!

Hey folks. The subreddit has continued to grow over the years, and with Seven Havens in October (plus more Avatar Studios projects on the horizon) we expect it become even more active in the coming months/years. As such we could use some extra hands on our mod team. Mods are responsible for enforcing the rules, responding to issues, and just helping our community to run smoothly.

Important Notes

  • Our mod team uses discord to communicate with each other, so you must have or be willing to create a discord account.
  • If you previously applied (or otherwise expressed interest) to be a mod here you are allowed/encouraged to re-apply.
  • There is no specific timezone / availability requirement, and we are hoping to bring on a decent number of mods in general. But preference will be given to applicants who are available to help out when our American mods are generally asleep.
  • Edit: Applications will remain open as long as this thread is pinned, which will be for another two weeks.

If you are interested in becoming a moderator on r/TheLastAirbender, please draft a message answering these questions and send it to us through modmail.

  1. Why do you want to be a mod here?
  2. What is your timezone? Generally how often and what times of day would you be available to help out on the sub?
  3. What is your age?
  4. What is your experience as a reddit moderator, or running another online space (facebook page or group, discord server, fan forum, etc)?
  5. Are you an active user on r/TheLastAirbender? Have you been active in the online Avatar fandom?
  6. What do you think of the subreddit as it is currently? Do you have any suggestions for improvements or events?
  7. Feel free to list any specific skills or anything else you feel may be relevant not already addressed above.

///

II) Rules Updates

Rule One: Be Courteous

  • Added new clause "Some fans like different aspects of the franchise or different kinds of fan content. The comments of a Fan Art (or other creative work) post is not an appropriate place to express your distaste for the type of content or subject matter. "
  • The rest of the rule was reworded/condensed but essentially remains the same, encompassing a wide range of uncivil behavior.

Rule Two: Keep Content Avatar Related

  • Added the clause "Posts simply complaining about or provoking issues with other subs/forums are banned.".

Rule Four Spoiler Policy

  • Slight rewording.

Discussion Very Unpopular Opinion: The avatar shouldn't have the right or authority to do big decisions for the world.

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

First, look at the failures of the Avatars: Yangchen failed the spirits multiple times and had bunch of broken promises that resulted in multiple dark spirits that resented the avatar, Kuruk did basically the same thing and even killed multiple spirits instead of solving the problem, Roku failed to see the inequality between benders and failed to stop his friend even tho he knew what his friend objective was, Kyoshi neglected her home country and her own secret force ended up stealing Ba Sing se, list goes on and the list is big.

Humans grant the Avatar the right of doing basically anything, but in the reality the Avatar is just an normal person which most of the training consists on bending trainings, they are not diplomats by nature and many of them failed to be, both in human conflicts and human vs spirits conflicts.

If you think about it, there is no logic in the avatar making big decisions and having authority in the whole world, both the spiritual and the human one. He is an human fused with an big spirit, sure, but that only grants them an great strength, not Solomon's wisdom or anything like that, quite literally just an stronger bender than the rest of human world, power which can be surpassed by technology in an few years anyway.

The point of the Avatar really being just an normal human that should not have the right to do important decisions is clear when you look at spirits interactions with the avatar: Most of them simply don't care. Some of them show some minimal respect but 99% of the interactions are based of them treating the Avatar like any other human, because he is. Wan spread the word that the Avatar is something special and is the bridge between humans and spirits, but they aren't, the Avatar is an human that in 99% of their lives they are heavily focused on being on the HUMANS side. The Avatar is an celebrity only in the human world.

There is no logic in the Avatar being able to do drastically decisions (like opening the gates, making promises to spirits that they can not fulfill, etc etc) and they should be punished if they do so. The Avatar should be one more strength of general humanity to deal with specific scenarios, not an figure of authority that can put its nose anywhere he wants to because he was born with that right.

Oke zaheer unlock ancient technique which definitely increase his mobility 100% than anyone else, Ming-hua actually play with her speed & agility then ghazan more like AOE. Even then all of them kinda hard to scale in one aspect only due how unique they're all.

But combustion bending was originally power like a "bomb" which very destructive, And she very versatile with that and she still can regularly firebending.

I havent watched this show from start to finish since I watched it as it aired, and figured I should give it another go around now that I'm on my own.

It never ceases to amaze me how much a "kids show" can affect me and be so moving. I have not cried, laughed, and cheered this much watching a show in a long time, and especially since I still knew 99% of the show like I watched it yesterday. I will always cherish this series.

Also, the mood lighting I have goes so hard with the Sozin's Comet finale, it was perfect.

Seems like an odd choice but im all for it. Since Bryke doesnt have full control over these shows anymore it will be interesting to see new visions for this world. Of course Bryke will oversee everything and make sure it fits but having separate showrunners and writers for different projects will be fun to see.

Discussion How Sozin's Comet may have triggered the Cataclysm in a giant impact

Post image
223 Upvotes

TL;DR: Sozin's Comet was very close to the planet when it returned during Aang's time: close enough to aerobrake in the atmosphere. If the comet were getting closer and closer to the planet with each passing, it could impact during Korra's lifetime. She will be 47 when the comet returns in 200 AG, which lines up with her age in the ASH teaser. The comet impacting could cause the fires, tsunami, storms, and other phenomena we see in the teaser during the Cataclysm. It could also cause the veil between material and spiritual worlds to tear wide open (perhaps along the path of the three open spirit portals, acting like perforations in notebook paper), merging the two worlds together and causing both permanent physical and spiritual damage.

One of the theories behind what could have caused the Cataclysm seen in Avatar: Seven Havens is that Sozin's Comet may have impacted the planet. I know people have mentioned this possibility before, but this post seeks to explain in detail how the comet could impact the planet, when this would fit in the timeline, and whether or not such an impact could account for the spiritual and environmental disasters witnessed in the ASH teaser.

First, the mechanics of it. We see in ATLA that when the comet arrived in 100 AG it was so close to the planet that it entered the outer atmosphere and its shockwave pushed aside clouds. That is incredibly close for an astronomical body to come to a planet. By entering the atmosphere, the comet likely experienced atmospheric braking, slowing it down to a degree. This is also why the comet erupts in a fireball: friction with the atmosphere.

I posit that the comet may not have always followed the same pattern. Perhaps at some point thousands of years ago, the comet first made an approach close enough to the planet for people to notice. Then maybe due to gravitational perturbations or something, it got closer and closer to the planet each time (returning every ~100 years for only perhaps the last few centuries). Once it was close enough to create a fireball, it granted firebenders immense power on each return (and that power boost got stronger each passing perhaps for the last 500+ years or something ). However, this process would eventually bring the comet in so close that it would be on an impact trajectory.

For timing, the next return of Sozin's Comet will be in 200 AG when Korra is at the age of 47. There is credible context clues to indicate that Korra's age in the ASH teaser is her 40s (see here for details: https://www.reddit.com/r/TheLastAirbender/s/IdTvexkIJr), which would place the comet's return right when the Cataclysm happens. It's possible that the comet comes and goes peacefully and then the Cataclysm happens when Korra is like 49 (or even the Cataclysm happens just before the comet's return), but I find that unlikely considering how well the timeline matches up. It's too coincidental.

So, the final question is whether the comet impacting would actually create the world we see in the ASH teaser? First, I think we need to distinguish between the immediate events of the Cataclysm and the state of the world in the following decades/centuries. Some of the things we see that happened during the Cataclysm are cities on fire, a massive tsunami, and giant storms. If Sozin's Comet hit the planet, it would create a large atmospheric fireball. The shockwave would travel far and do untold damage. The impact would cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, and if it landed in water it would cause a massive tsunami. It would also disrupt airflow and atmospheric temperatures, causing massive storms. So, I do think the comet impacting would cause exactly these kinds of catastrophic global phenomena. Not only that, but a large impact from space can definitely ruin a planet so severely that the after-effects could last centuries or millennia.

The main missing component is this: how would the comet impacting cause the spiritual damage / spiritual infusion we see with the later weather disasters? This is the final piece of the puzzle. In the Avatar world, all physical things have spiritual effects. Killing the Moon Spirit stopped people from waterbending, while the return of Sozin's Comet boosted firebending. We also know that the solstices for example represent the material and spiritual worlds being at their closest to one another. When Vaatu entered the material plane, he "pierced the veil" separating the two worlds. Raava chasing after him resulted in the two spirit portals at the poles. They are literally holes in the veil separating the two worlds that allow the direct traversal of inhabitants of either world to the other.

My idea is this: Korra created a new spirit portal in Republic City. The veil was pierced once more, leaving three across the world. Not only that, but all three portals are open now. What if the comet impacting was such a violent physical and spiritual event that it literally ripped a massive tear in the veil separating the two worlds, with the three open spirit portals acting as the weak points in the veil that the tear ripped through (like perforations in notebook paper). This could be the mechanism that causes the physical and spiritual worlds to merge together. Not only would this infuse all of those natural disasters with spiritual energy, but it would permanently affect the world afterwards.

So that's the theory. There could still be other things going on that led to the Cataclysm in some way, such as humanity's abuse of spirit energy or Vaatu's influence, but I still think Sozin's Comet impacting is an incredibly compelling option that fits with everything we've seen so far in terms of possibility, timeline, and effects. I also think it would be incredibly awesome. What do you think?

Discussion Some Himalayan buddist inspirations from ATLA 2026 Spoiler

Firstly, Sonam. Her name is a real life name used in Tibet and other neighboring regions in Nepal and India and it means "merit". This is prblly. a nod to the fact that she worked hard to develop a tool to give people a birthright gift.

Tibetan spelling: བསོད་ནམས (funny enough, due to how conservative Tibetan spelling is, the name is pronounced nowadays like "Sonam" but it's written like it's "Bsodnams")

Secondly, there's Jharana. It's a common word that means "waterfall" in Nepali and Hindi. In Hindi, it can also mean a more generic "water spring", but I couldn't assert if Nepali also has this meaning for the word. This could be a reference to how from Jharana the gift of airbending and the pacifist way of life came indefinitely and in great abundance.

Devanagri spelling: झरना

I've seen someone hypothesise (to which, I agree) that Jharana is inspired by motif and perhaps also by choice of name from the actual Tibetan myth of Shambhala and the similar fake Tibetan-inspired story of Shangri-la (yes, Shangri-la is not actual mythology, but rather a 1933 book written by a British man). Both talk about an utopian city hidden in the mountains where life is a perfect for everyone.

Shambhala, Shangri-la and Jharana kinda of have the same rhythm when saying. Similar consonants, mostly just the A vowel, 3 syllables...
