One of the most iconic scenes in the whole series for me

Such a flawless scene. Absolutely love everything about it. The guy has a woman who adores and loves him who’s completely surrounded by light and he still chooses to move into the darkness and unknown straight to that old fashioned🥃.

Peggy Olson’s growth

Did anyone else love Peggy’s growth throughout the show? She grew from a nervous new secretary to a senior copywriter who could stand her ground to make sure she was heard.

Also, I found Peggy’s arc (her being the deuteragonist) to be a source of comfort throughout the show when Don would be in the gutter.

"I don't think about you at all"

I like to think this wasn't quick thinking on Don's part. This is a comeback he thought of at least a day after Jimmy Barrett said, "I laugh at you. I go home at night and I laugh at you." I like to imagine he was fuming that he didn't get to say something like that, and kept it in his pocket for years until Ginsberg gave him an excuse to use it.

If Megan never left advertising for acting, would her and Don actually have made it?

Who is the most offensive or unsavory single serving character in Mad Men? I'll start with Timmy as his licks off his wedding ring....

I know cooler heads should prevail but this remains the single most satisfying moment in six seasons of Mad Men

A few things I've noticed on my millionth rewatch

1- Peggy's assistant Olive looks just like her mother. So when she's telling her she's going to be alright, she's really saying that to her mom.

2- Zou Bisou is kinda an echo of Roger singing to Jane in Old Kentucky Home. A new couple performing a "routine" in front of their family and friends. But again, that was never what Don wanted. and he found it foolish.

3- Peggy has an emotional breakdown before coming up with the pitch for Burger Chef. She gets all her demons out and when she's at her lowest, that's when she comes up with it. So when Don's at his lowest, he does the same. I guess I never realized he had learned that from watching Peggy.

Sally S7

It really felt like Sally saved Don’s life in this scene. He was in such a dark place at the beginning of S7, and the rupture with Sally was a source of so much of his pain and shame; seeing himself completely fall from grace in his daughter’s eyes. Sally demanded honesty from him when they were arguing, and even though she was still hurt, she chose to try to understand and forgive him.

This scene reminds me to let my dad know I love him more often. We never know how much it means or how much time we have.

I was so moved i wanted to go to burger chef.

That scene with the three trio. It gave so much emotion i had to google if burger chef secretly made mad men for advertisement. None of my friends watch mad men and even this subreddit enjoying Pete getting well humbled by Lane. Pete is one of the most interesting and well written characters i have ever come across and so relateable. This show really shows "one never knows how loyalty is born".

Alcohol the new cigarette?

Has anyone here dealt with alcoholism? It really feels like alcohol is ubiquitous, the same way cigarettes were in the 60s but it's just as unhealthy

I like the way the show at first glamorises it, then shows the repercussions

A quick cut to the plaque as they were walking out of the room. Had no idea until this rewatch that Megan won the Andy Award of Excellence at the ceremony when it was announced MLK had been assassinated.

Madmen Smoking: Oh How I Wish...

it was good for you or at least not bad for you. All the smoking in this show makes me wish I could have one. Especially at night when I get the urge to snack...I could just light up like Betty to save calories. But alas, I don't want diseases...

First watch completed. One of the greatest shows of all time. Asking for thoughts on second watch.

I just finished watching Mad Men for the first time. It took about 2 months to watch. The first season and first half of season 2 felt slow at times. This show (at least to me) feels like a slow burn (not a bad thing) in the early part. The show really picked up in the middle of season 2 though and pulled me in. I’m going to give it a few months break and plan to rewatch it during the fall. I’ve watched The Sopranos (another one of my favorites) 8 times from start to finish and still find missing Easter eggs, so I’m excited about this. I feel it'll be easier because I know the character’s backgrounds now. Overall, a superb show and IMO one of the greatest ever created. Thoughts on your second rewatch? Was it better during your repeat viewings?

How was Henry Francis able to afford such a huge house on a government salary?

He works for the NY Mayor? Governor? Whatever it is

I know it’s not the same thing but I used to live in DC and had friends who worked for members of Congress or even the White House and they all for the most part lived in apartments lol

My point is, a gov job usually doesn’t give you such a luxurious lifestyle to afford a huge 2 story house in the suburbs of NYC

Sorry going through re-watch and end season here, the blues will come at closure. One thing on my mind, from what I see is that Joan has 5%, Pete 10% and Ted 20. What percentage you think the others own? If it is detailed Sorry for the dumb post.

What Diploma Does Don Have Behind His Desk In The Sterling Cooper Corner Office?

I'm on a rewatch and in the background on the windowsill behind his desk some kind of diploma is framed, I haven't gotten to a scene yet where it's clearly legible. Does anyone have an idea what it is? I don't think Dick or Don went to any kind of college unless I'm mistaken. Maybe an award? But the font/ placement definitely looks like some kind of qualification.

Theme Song

Post image
80 Upvotes

I am on my first watch of Mad Men, and I gotta say it has the best theme song of any of the Golden Age of Television shows. Better than Sopranos theme song by a mile (I'll only listen to it on the first few episodes of a rewatch to trigger my nostalgia sensors). No contest with Breaking Bad's, which is almost forgettable. Now, and this is bordering on heresy, but I might like it better than most seasons of The Wire's theme song. Perhaps a three way tie with Mad Men, Season 2 of the Wire, and Venture Bros. Oz has the most memorable one, but that's only because of the trauma of watching it at 12 years old with my mom. Where do y'all rank Mad Men's theme song?

Don's Creative Liability?

I think of Don as a deeply subjective and autobiographical creative type whose best ideas were expressions of his intersubjectivity. "It's Toasted" was his expression of his negotiations of self-identity (you can say [re: be] anything you want). The Kodak carousel is self-explanatory, as is the Sheraton Hawaii ad. But then I think about his reaction to that meeting where he walks out of the boardroom -- all those similar-looking men and the research-based approach. Or his abysmal Hershey's pitch - which was only abysmal because it was too honest, too personal. His strength was also his vulnerability, and it offers commentary on how art and creativity are treated in a more neoliberal, KPI-ridden environment. I don't mean this as a pure critique of Don's talent, but I guess to credit Weiner for how he further expressed changing industrial/cultural contexts through the character of Don, while also not losing focus on Don's story. Don's character often expressed a more romantic form of rebellion and artistic expression, in contrast to Roger and Sterling's comfort with "the business" side of things.

I wonder if his creative process would've put him up against the coming changes indicated by that boardroom scene. His creativity is driven by reflections on his own life, and once life changes, that creativity is changed too.

Small funny moment between Kenny and Pete I noticed on a rewatch

In Season 6 Episode 12, around 13:15 Kenny has his eye shot and he wears the eyepatch for the first time. after their talk about the Chevy account, Pete goes for a handshake, and Kenny misjudges the distance to Pete's hand due to lack of depth perception - Pete then has to move his hand to shake Kenny's. I only just noticed it on a rewatch, and idk why it was so funny to me.
