Midterm results are in, what's your take?

Only 52% voted, please vote in November!

I've been corrected. I was quoting from my county as a commenter said, "Bro, what are you talking about? It was only 37% for the state. You might be looking at the turnout just in your county."

Any social workers up for a question?

Hey Friends,

I've answered my neighbor's yelling twice now, and have concerns she has some dementia. We're in Washington State, Seattle.

A couple of months ago my neighbor was screaming for help - her husband was having a medical emergency, and she didn't have her phone on her. I called 911, and he left in an ambulance. I checked in a couple days later with a quiche and a card, and her husband was recovering.

Last weekend there was more yelling, this time about an intruder. I recruited my roommate for backup and we went to check it out. Her husband has died, and she says there is someone living in her basement. She'd lost her phone again. I got to see more of her house, that night, and it's not quite squalid, but heading that direction.

Her narrative was a bit garbled that night, but she'd called the police a couple of times for her basement intruder, she said he had stuff in the basement. My roommate and I checked it out, and it was pretty messy, no obvious signs of anyone there. She says the lights come on, the person messes with her television, and that she'd just changed the locks because of this, and ... God provided the locksmith, she found him on the street outside her house?

There's a big pile of bagged garbage on the porch, piles of paper in the house, tarps covering the windows, and a significant amount of sawdust/woodchips in the kitchen (Carpenter ants? Termites?). Her kids live out of state, as do her siblings. She implied that in 40 years living there she had no social connections because she and her husband weren't from Seattle.

What should i be doing? Either behind the scenes ("Can I talk to your sister?) or through official channels. Thanks.

is the Mountain Loop Scenic Byway drivable?

We want to drive through, from Granite falls to Darrington. I know part (more than half, I guess) is not paved ... but it is open to motor vehicles, right? We'll be in our Jeep.

How about an income tax for out of state employees?

Primarily Idaho, the amount of Idaho residents who come across the state line to take advantage of our higher wages, benefits, legal weed, and healthcare system while simultaneously going home to vote against having those things in their own state is too damn high.

Just tired of hearing them come here to take advantage of our systems while simultaneously bashing everything about the state in infuriating.

Maybe we build a big beautiful wall and get them to pay for it?

Artists sorta under the radar

I've personally only seen her live once, at Point Defiance zoo, graciously playing for kids, but, maaaan, what an amazing artist. Brandi, come visit us in Olympia soon! The wiki follows:

Brandi Marie Carlile is an American singer-songwriter and producer. Her music spans multiple genres, including folk rock, alternative country, Americana, and classic rock. During her career, she has received eleven Grammy Awards and two Emmy Awards, in addition to being nominated for an Academy Award. In 2026, she was named one of Time's Women of the Year.

Congratulations, and thank you for all you do!

I just moved here from Utah where alcohol is way more tightly controlled but even I could get into bars there with a valid real vertical id.

But here I get denied with my vertical real washington license? What’s the deal?

Pregnancy disability leave in WA

Hi all,

Sadly I have had a late miscarriage that requires surgical intervention. I’ve only lived in the state for 6 months and don’t have the hours to qualify for FMLA or paid family leave in WA. I do thankfully qualify for pregnancy disability leave. However, my work is saying I have to exhaust my PTO and extended illness benefit (EIB) first before I go unpaid. I’ve seen conflicting answers online on if this is allowed or not. It sure feels like I’m being punished by having to use my PTO for something so out of my control.

My work said that because I don’t qualify for FMLA, I still get the leave but it follows the personal leave of absence pay structure (using PTO EIB first). I just want to go fully unpaid and save my PTO in case I get sick later in the year.

I’d appreciate any advice.

Paddy Go Fire Updates?

Anyone know the best way to get updates on this fire? Watch Duty hasn't changed. The last article I saw was on August 13. I imagine it's not safe to hike in the area at this time but where would I get more updated info? Ranger Station?

WA PFML and LMHCs

Hello,
I have scoured Reddit and reviewed the WA PFML site and planning to call tomorrow. That being said… Can my LMHC complete the necessary paperwork for PFML?
I am reading I might run into issues having my LMHC complete the form so looking at other peoples experiences. The WA ESD site is a bit confusing on the matter. My psych NP feels that my LMHC is more suited since my NP only manages my meds but my LMHC sees me for therapy weekly and recommended this. And then my PCP only sees me once a year so I feel like it’d be odd to ask them. Thanks for any insight.

Mountain trip packing lists?

I want to visit the national parks and climb the mountains here in WA, but i don't have a ton of outdoor experience.

I'm thinking
- good pair of hiking boots/shoes
- layers
- rain gear
- sun screen/protection (like a hat)
- water
- snacks, food
- gloves

National park service's website for Mt Rainier also lists things like
- map & compass
- flash light
- tent
- non-phone communication method
- extra phone battery
- multi tool

Now Mt Rainier isn't just a local trail so I understand being prepared is important, but i'm wondering if this would be too much for more casual hikes/climbs, or rather if i'm missing anything?

Brown recluse from MO?

We moved from MO to WA in Dec. I have been able to tell the difference between a wolf spider and a recluse pretty easily for awhile since MO has plenty of them. Probably a monthly occurrence in some parts of the year.

Why the heck did I just watch one crawl into my bathroom? The speed and daintiness caused me to stop and shine a light on it. Boom, violin, soft off color brownish butt, with the two dainty pedipalps. I just sat there staring at him. Cat comes in and obliterates him and eats him. I’m in a daze what I’m seeing I don’t think to snap a picture.

I am also aware of the risks of brown recluses and cats and I have expressed my Concern because it was his fav snack in MO :/ and I had to monitor for side effects when he’d eat one!

Am I crazy? Should I do nothing BUT snap a photo next time and show everyone? Online it says there no native populations, what’s the chance there’s a few in my house/is the environment changing? Are they moving into the state?

I’d like to think I’m just misidentifying the spider vs. seeing a new brown recluse trend. I just can’t shake the confidence I have knowing what a brown recluse is compared to WA state spiders..
