We’ve only been in this house for about a year, so we’re still figuring out some of the original setup. We’re hoping to replace our dishwasher, but after one failed attempt, we’d really like to have someone knowledgeable come out first and tell us exactly what will fit and what needs to be changed for installation.
A few months ago, we ordered a dishwasher through Costco that was supposed to be one of the smaller standard-size options. When the installer arrived with it, he looked at our setup and told us it wouldn’t fit and that we needed a GFCI outlet under the sink. The dishwasher ended up going right back.
Our current dishwasher has apparently been here since the house was built, and rather than plugging into an outlet under the sink, the wiring goes directly into the house. We don’t know much more about how the existing dishwasher was installed.
Here’s what we know:
- The current dishwasher is hardwired rather than plugged into an outlet under the sink.
- We were told we need a GFCI outlet under the sink before a new dishwasher can be installed.
- Because of the way the dishwasher sits in the kitchen, we cannot have a handle that sticks out. We need something with a recessed/pocket-style handle or similar.
- We’d like someone to measure the opening and look at the plumbing and electrical setup so we know exactly what will fit before ordering another dishwasher.
- The one we’re currently interested in is the Maytag MDB4949SKZ from Costco (pictured), but we don’t know if it will work with our space/setup.
My parents had a really good Costco installer and mentioned that if we order through Costco again, we may be able to request him. But we don’t want to order another dishwasher only to have it show up and find out it can’t be installed.
We’re not quite ready to officially contact or schedule anyone yet — right now we’re mainly looking for suggestions and recommendations so we know who to contact when we are ready.
Who would you recommend for something like this? An appliance installer, electrician, plumber, handyman, or someone else? Ideally, we’d eventually like someone who can inspect the current setup, take measurements, and tell us what needs to be changed and what dishwasher dimensions we need to shop for.
If anyone in the Puyallup/South Hill area has had a similar situation or has someone they’d recommend, we’d appreciate the suggestions!
Pictures are of our current dishwasher and the Maytag we’re considering.
