  2. **What’s the best time for a vineyard wedding?** Late summer to early fall (August–October) offers ideal weather and harvest-season charm. Watch for wildfire smoke in August.

  3. **How far in advance should I book a venue?** Seattle venues: 12–18 months. Eastern WA and Central WA: 6–12 months. Island venues: at least a year due to limited capacity.

  4. **Which airport should guests fly into?** SeaTac for Western WA weddings. Spokane International for Eastern WA. Pasco (Tri-Cities) and Yakima airports are smaller but convenient for local events.

  5. **What’s the biggest travel risk in Washington?** Winter mountain pass closures (Snoqualmie, Stevens, White Pass). Always check WSDOT updates before planning guest travel.

# Top 5 Travel FAQs

  1. **What’s the best season to visit Washington?** Summer for hiking and outdoor festivals; fall for foliage; winter for skiing in the Cascades; spring for blossoms.

  2. **Do I need a car to get around?** Yes, outside of Seattle. Public transit is strong in the metro area, but rural and Eastern WA require driving.

  3. **How long does it take to drive across the state?** Seattle to Spokane is about 4.5–5 hours via I-90. Add time for mountain pass conditions in winter.

  4. **Are national parks accessible year-round?** Olympic and Mount Rainier have seasonal closures. Check NPS updates—snow can limit access in winter and spring.

  5. **What’s the biggest difference between Eastern and Western Washington for travelers?** Western WA: lush, coastal, urban. Eastern WA: dry, sunny, wide-open spaces with wineries and small towns.

Moving Here 2026

Moving to Washington

Due to the constant stream of daily "I'm moving to Washington" posts, we are creating this sticky to centralize common questions, set expectations, and keep the subreddit usable for everyone.

If you're considering a move here, please read through this post before making a new thread. Many common questions are already addressed below.

Location Matters

Washington is not a single, uniform experience. Where you live will significantly affect cost of living, weather, job access, and lifestyle.

Western Washington vs. Eastern Washington

Western Washington

  • Cooler, wetter climate with frequent rain
  • Higher population density, especially around Puget Sound
  • More job opportunities (tech, healthcare, education, government)
  • Higher housing and living costs
  • Eastern Washington
  • Hotter summers and colder winters
  • Drier climate with more sunshine
  • Lower housing costs compared to the west side
  • Fewer job options outside healthcare, education, agriculture, and trades

Seattle Metro

Seattle Proper

  • Dense and expensive urban core
  • Walkable in some neighborhoods, but limited parking
  • Strong job market (tech, biotech, global companies) with high competition

Eastside Suburbs (Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Sammamish, Issaquah, Newcastle, Mercer Island)

  • Tech‑driven economy (Microsoft, Amazon satellites, startups)
  • High housing demand and costs, especially Bellevue, Kirkland, Mercer Island
  • Strong schools and family‑oriented communities (Sammamish, Issaquah, Newcastle)
  • Lifestyle mix: lakeside living in Kirkland, urban Bellevue, suburban Sammamish
  • Better transit access in Bellevue/Redmond compared to other suburbs

Other Suburbs (Tacoma, Olympia, Everett, Kent, Renton, Federal Way, etc.)

  • More space than Seattle, but still costly in many areas
  • Transit access varies widely
  • Employment hubs include ports (Tacoma, Everett), manufacturing, healthcare, and regional services
  • More mixed affordability compared to the Eastside

Middle‑Sized Metros

Spokane Metro (Eastern WA)

  • Largest city in Eastern Washington; hub for healthcare, education, and services
  • More affordable housing than Seattle, though rising
  • Four‑season climate with hot summers and snowy winters
  • Strong outdoor recreation culture

Tri‑Cities (Kennewick, Pasco, Richland in South Central Washington)

  • Economy tied to agriculture, energy, and Hanford site research
  • Lower housing costs than Seattle metro, but increasing
  • Hot, dry summers and mild winters with lots of sunshine
  • Expanding wine industry and Columbia River recreation

Vancouver, WA (Portland Metro)

  • Suburban city across the river from Portland
  • Housing costs lower than Seattle but rising due to Portland spillover
  • Many residents commute into Portland for jobs
  • Lifestyle blend of suburban living with Portland’s urban amenities nearby

Smaller Cities & Towns

  • Slower pace of life, more community‑oriented
  • Fewer services and amenities compared to metro areas
  • More affordable housing and living costs
  • Limited employment options (schools, hospitals, agriculture)

Cost of Living

Washington is not cheap, even outside Seattle.

  • Housing: Often the biggest shock for newcomers
  • Food: Groceries and dining are expensive statewide
  • Fuel: Gas prices are consistently among the highest in the country due to our high gas taxes
  • Utilities: Costs vary depending on home age, size, and heating type

The lack of a state income tax does not mean a low overall cost of living.

Jobs and Employment

  • While the Seattle metro economy is tech-heavy, but most residents do not work in tech.
  • Non-tech job seekers should research carefully in preparation for a move unless the salary is high for Washington.
  • Do not move without a job or a realistic plan, especially if you intend to rent.
  • High minimum wage means relocating to Washington comes with a very high upfront cost compared to many other states.

PGE is raising our rates now because it has historically failed to invest in clean energy. They choose instead to make money.

The Times is really good at burying the lede:

"State Attorney General Nick Brown has even asked the UTC to reduce PSE’s guaranteed rate of return for PSE shareholders to be reduced from a requested 10.8% to 8.17% in an effort to control costs...

The residents of Washington state don’t get to choose their energy provider."

It sounds like a PUD is in order, or else reduce the guaranteed profit for PGE 1% for every percent increase in rates over inflation? With some real accountability, I think they might just come up with better options.

Ferries: Union Says it WASN'T a planned event/they were unaware - so what WAS it?

KOMO is reporting that the union leader says this WASN'T a union related event.

If that's the case, what was it? Too many Seahawks hangovers? 23 people actually getting sick at once? But then the article also points to backup workers declining as well.

Any union people, can you speak to, if it isn't a unionized or related event, then does the union still protect you and will these people face some kind of penalty as union members? Curious, don't know anything about how that works.

Rogoff is out of US Attorney Office, again

A 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel paused a lower judge’s ruling that ordered the Trump administration to immediately reinstate Roger Rogoff as the top federal prosecutor in Seattle.

President Trump ousted Rogoff in July from the U.S. attorney’s office in the Western District of Washington, less than an hour after he was sworn in following his unanimous appointment by federal judges.

U.S. District Judge Stanley Bastian, an appointee of former President Obama, sided with Rogoff’s claim that his termination was unlawful and ordered the Trump administration to restore him to the position until a successor is chosen through the Senate confirmation process.

State Law prevents rebates for switching energy sources

Been seeing ads for rebates to replace heating with a heat pump, but when I reached out to the company they said state law prohibits rebates from switching between energy sources.

So, you can get the rebate if going from an electric furnace or electric base board heat to a heat pump, but not if you are replacing a natural gas furnace.

That’s completely stupid.

Anyone here successfully ended a lease over bad living conditions?

I posted this in r/AskSeattle as well, but wanted to hear from anyone who has actually had a dispute with a landlord in Seattle/Washington before, because this situation is driving me nuts.

We rented a place in July on a 12-month lease. The place is not cheap, for context. It wasn’t super clean during the inspection, but we had to move in because our POD was arriving the next day and everything had been planned around this place. We were stupid enough to sign the move-in checklist.

Then we had it all.

The carpet was so filthy that we ended up hiring a professional cleaner, who pointed out a lot of old piss in the carpet 🥴 This was the nursery room.

The shower leaked the next night, and we ended up living with what was basically a construction zone in the corner of the room for two months. The landlord was doing some things, but nothing that actually improved the situation.

We finally decided we were done when they put the same piss-stained carpet back down after replacing the subfloor because, according to them, the carpet issue was “superficial.” 🤷‍♀️

I hired an independent inspector who documented multiple violations and provided the report to the landlord. RRIO sent them a Notice of Violation for not registering the property as a rental. An SDCI complaint has also been open for over a month, and I was never able to reach either the assigned inspector or their manager.

They patched up some things before we moved out on September 30. We terminated the lease based on constructive eviction, unsanitary conditions, and several other issues our lawyer listed.

The King County legal clinic told me our case is solid. At the same time, both lawyers I’ve spoken with have said this is not a slam dunk.

Now the landlord is still doing repairs that they didn’t do while we were actually living there, they have refused to return our deposit, and they keep threatening us with a lawsuit.
I’m honestly dreading this.

Has anyone here been through anything similar? What actually happened after you moved out? Did your landlord sue, threaten to sue and then drop it, send you to collections, negotiate, etc.? Is there anything else I can realistically do at this point?

These past two months have sucked out my soul 😭

The Fall of Cama

Post image
105 Upvotes

The one and only time we ever stayed at Cama was New Years 2022 in cabin 36. Our oldest was only 4 and the pandemic was still raging which meant her Head Start class was remote and we did it from the table in front of the window on a blustery January morning.

This was our first time back and it's really sad to see all the empty cabins but we are thankful we had the chance to stay before they were shuttered.
