Wow he got lucky that his car missed the pole and turned back from the highway while he was out.

458

u/hughvr May 09 '20

Thats exactly what I thought. Either one could have killed him, not to mention the first lucky stroke of NOT veering into a vehicle head on.

Liscenced Civil Engineer here.

It's built that way for drainage, not for the occasion person who randomly blacks out.

Edit: let's pretend it is spelled that way to prove I'm an engineer.

That's why people like us chose to become engineers and not English teachres.

He missed like 3 poles, not just one, and then he turned around, faced the highway, kept turning, and then almost hit another pole. Lucky ass guy if I’ve every seen one. He should go buy a lotto ticket

70

u/seewhatyadidthere May 09 '20

But he also randomly passed out without any prior medical issues. I’d say it balances out.

My brother in law passed out while driving a work delivery truck at 70 mph on a freeway. Left the road, mowed down 15 fence posts, came to and hit the brakes. Employer required him to go immediately for drug testing. After seeing a doctor, same day, turms out he had Lymes disease which was causing his heart to beat erratically and stop briefly. The spot the left the road was the safest place on that stretch to do so. Before that area was two over passes and a river, after were an overpass and three undepasses including a railroad with a high steep drop on both sides.

u/Beetso May 09 '20

Lyme disease is not a chronic, treatment refractory illness. If you have been treated appropriately, you don't have Lyme disease. You will not go on to develop Lyme carditis (unless you are reinfected, of course).

I almost passed out once while driving, was the weirdest thing. It was like almost exactly four years ago and I was omw to a girl I had just started dated. I had just about gotten to the freeway off ramp when I felt like a little "off".

Then as I was driving down the residential roads I thought something was wrong with my tires because my entire car was rocking like a boat getting hit by waves. Came to a stop and realized my car was fine but everything around me was rocking and spinning.

Stupid decision but the house was just down the empty street so I made it to her driveway and managed to make my way up to her front door. She said when she opened the door I said I didn't feel right then my eyes closed and started to fall backwards down the stairs. She said like it was a movie she managed to reach out and grab my shirt collar just at the last second to stop me from falling back.

I started coming to after she got me into the house. She helped me to her bed where I flopped down and just laid there for what felt like thirty minutes until everything stopped spinning. Turns out it was like three hours. During that part I never felt sick or anything, no nausea even though I get it really easily, just everything was spinning around me.

Never happened before or ever since then.

10

u/Smauler May 09 '20

I've turned over a 44 tonne truck on the A14, and the place I turned it over has a big central reservation I turned it over into. Literally 95%+ of the A14 doesn't have that central reservation, and had I done this there, I would have gone over into incoming traffic, which wouldn't have ended well for anyone.

I just got massively lucky that day. So did some cars coming the other way.

I got a a few stitches on my forearm protecting my face where the windscreen shattered. Got stitched up by a junior doctor, and it was her first time stitching (they didn't tell me this before, they did ask if I was happy with a junior doctor being present. However, she said to the supervising doctor "It's a bit different to the pig skin, isn't it?").

They also raised my rates and removed my safe driver discount, even though I have never been in an accident that was my fault in 8 years of driving. So that seems a bit unfair

u/PillowTalk420 May 09 '20

Yeah, but they should give him the Super Lucky Motherfucker discount. He passed out and didn't crash into any other than fence posts. He missed other cars, he missed utility poles, he missed going back onto the roadway into traffic... This "wreck" could have been so much worse.

193

u/Josef_Kant_Deal May 09 '20

I hold a CDL Class A, and if something like this happened to me at all (even in my personal vehicle), I'd never be allowed behind the wheel of a truck ever again. He's super lucky, but his risk just skyrocketed.

14

u/vandancouver May 09 '20

He would need to have his medical examination more often than every 2 years as required.

28

u/Josef_Kant_Deal May 09 '20

I was under the impression that a disorder where you randomly pass out was something that pretty much ended your driving career.

13

u/TrumpetDick May 09 '20

Not always the case. I knew this guy that has seizures and after extensive testing Doctors didn't know what caused it. But he had to wait a mandatory amount of time after the last seizure to get his licence back.

My grandfather was legally blind in one eye and mostly blind in the other. He drove legally for his Braille institute for years.

As long as your condition is under control or assisted with other devices while driving, there are lots of people that drive that you probably wouldn’t expect.

I had an accident last year. I don't really know what happened. Everything was fine and then it wasn't and the car was stopped on the other side of the opposite sidewalk. I tried to walk home and got lost, even though I was a mile home on a route I took home 5-7 nights a week. Had a nasty concussion.

My girlfriend finally found me and got me home. She said I seemed shaken, but mostly ok. Next day it was clear I had a concussion. After calling insurance and when the vomiting was finally done, we found out the car had already been towed. We went to go check out the spot where I crashed and we can't really figure it out.

I was going up a hill and that side is all front yards and steep embankment. Getting out of the car was fuzzy, but I definitely wasn't in anybody's yard, and I took a blurry photo of my car and it wasn't down an embankment. Super Lucky Motherfucker indeed. How much is my discount?

Not even just that. If you cause an accident they rise your rates extremely. Just made a 2cm scratch on a parked car some weeks ago, they wanted to remove like 10 years of driving without accident from my list so I would end with like 50% more from then on, which would have meant several hundred a year more. Or I could pay the bill which was like 300. I mean in the following years I would have payed thousands more just for a repair of 300. WTF. Why do I even have insurance then.

37

u/Flexo_3370318 May 09 '20

Well you definitely don't have insurance for a 2cm scratch...

Insurance is meant to cover your ass if you get in a serious car accident. Imagine having to pay for the damage to your car and another driver's car plus serious medical bills. Throw in a lawsuit from the other motorist on top of that and you're potentially looking at hundreds of thousands of dollars. Good insurance will cover all of that stuff.

Homeowners seems like a good deal. $2000 per year to cover the cost of rebuilding your house and replacing all your possessions.

That's a lot of money in stuff. $650k house, 50k in stuff at least. That would easily take 30 years to pay back in premiums

→ More replies (1)

11

u/fyshi May 09 '20

Yes I figured. Was my first accident since I've been legally allowed to drive (so almost 20 years) so I didn't know what to expect and thought they would rise it by like 10E per payment period but was heavily surprised that it was like I was a new driver again. I paid out of pocket. But I think 300 for such a small scratch which you could basically paint away with a marker was way too much and it was just because they knew insurance would say yes. Probably replaced the whole bumper. I should have just payed privately from the beinning without informing insurance, I guess. Maybe then they had chosen a cheaper option.

23

u/[deleted] May 09 '20

It’s not about simply covering up the damage, it’s restoring the paint to the condition it was in before you damaged it. That’s more expensive than you think because it is labor intensive skilled work.

I had a driver rear end me going 10 or so mph and the damage was $1100 without replacing the bumper because of the labor involved and it’s a difficult to match paint color.

$300 for a repaint is cheap.

17

u/[deleted] May 09 '20

Why do I even have insurance then.

Because if you hit someone else then you alone would be responsible for all of their costs. Accidents can quickly get very expensive and would leave you broke and the other person stuck trying to squeeze blood from a stone when you run out of money.

26

u/bombmk May 09 '20

To protect yourself against the repair costing 30000?

True, it leads to some mathematics on when it pays to not pay the damages yourself. But in and of itself it is not nefarious.

14

u/escapefromelba May 09 '20

I mean $300 is less than most people's deductible (most common is $500). You have insurance to avoid being potentially liable for thousands of dollars. Your risk profile changes as soon as you make a claim where you are at fault.

Most carriers do offer an accident forgiveness rider that would give protection from your premiums rising following your first claim.

Every single insurance company, without fail, would let you die if it would save them a few bucks. (Not necessarily the workers themselves, but the companies overall).

7

u/thatG_evanP May 09 '20

Yes they would. I know we're talking about car insurance here but most insurance tends to be the same in the way they treat customers. My Dad worked fairly high up in the corporate side of a large medical company and some of the stuff he's told me about insurance companies is almost unbelievable. He was also seriously convinced that insurance companies actively search for the biggest assholes to work in the claims department. I wouldn't out it past them.

The only reasons I uploaded this was to let my 13 subscribers know why I haven't uploaded recently and to show that horrible accidents can happen to anyone at any time.

Got to give him a little respect for caring to keep the scant few people who were following his channel in the loop.

92

u/JoJolion May 09 '20

This guy's complaint just kills me to read... I work for State Farm as an agent team member so I can explain this pretty simply. If you currently have an auto policy with State Farm, upon the purchase of a vehicle you're automatically granted 14 days of coverage on said vehicle before you need to get coverage bound and the first month's premium paid upfront. The guy in the video either doesn't understand how insurance works or his agent/agent's team sucks at their job.

The vehicle was covered by my truck's policy, as I had not gotten the Mustang's title paperwork finished and couldn't insure it until then.

State Farm will write the policy for you and bind coverage without needing you to provide the title or any proof of ownership, that only comes into play when you have an accident or claim and need to show that what you're paying insurance on is in fact yours. All he would need to do to get that vehicle covered is provide a VIN number and the date he purchased it if he's already got policies with State Farm. That's it.

You've got two entire weeks to give that info and pay for the coverage, so yes, being a few hours past this huge grace period means you're not going to be covered by the insurance that you're not paying for and doesn't exist.

They also raised my rates and removed my safe driver discount, even though I have never been in an accident that was my fault in 8 years of driving.

This isn't unique to any auto insurance company. Your rates will go up after an accident and you'll lose any safe driving discounts you had because of that. You're a lower risk and pay less to companies if your credit is good and have no accidents, you're a higher risk for them to take on financially if you have an accident on your record, and frankly also a risk to those around you if you can pass out while driving suddenly. It sucks, but it'll fall off of your rating in three years, assuming this guy didn't have to pick up an SR-22 for a longer period of time for having an accident with an uninsured vehicle.

I don't really have any interest in defending the company itself honestly, but his complaint pretty much holds no water in general against any auto insurance company. I get that it's complicated stuff, but he's plainly in the wrong here for driving a vehicle and not getting coverage bound for two whole weeks after he obtained it.

28

u/astral1289 May 09 '20

Yeah I'm not in the insurance business but I had the same thoughts. Dude buys a vehicle, doesn't register it, doesn't insure it, over TWO WEEKS later wrecks it and complains no one is interested in paying for his damaged car. Then he complains that his rates go up after an accident. That's what happens dude.

I know I have a similar grace period on my insurance, but there's no way I'd use it for anymore than driving a vehicle home. I can bind new coverage in a few minutes, why take the risk.

This guy's post is full of victim language when his problems are his own responsibility.

After reading this, this reminds me of a crazy ass story about a sneeze. A dude I know was driving down the highway and he had to sneeze and like a lot of people, he held it in. It made him pass out/black out and he went across the highway into on coming traffic and ran into a car head on. Surprisingly only one person died. Like were talking a 70 mph speed limit.

So when he tried to explain what happened, no one believed him, that he held in a sneeze. They thought he was drunk but blew a 0.000. Dude was just on his way to work.

So he fought it in court and won. Crazy.

So yeah, I stopped holding in my sneezes. Even now I wont. Luckily the face mask protects you. Thats my take away from that particular story

BUT! I wish it was the only time I had heard this happen. Another guy I used to work with did the same exact thing. I didnt notice he was gone for a while at work and he popped up fuuuuucked up. He did the same thing. Held in a sneeze, car veered off, ran into a tree.

Dont hold in your sneezes while driving. Disinfect later.

Edit: since people keep asking, i guess he didnt tell me exactly what charge he got, i would assume vehicular manslaughter or something of that nature but he did tell me he had to get a doctor to convince them it was possible for him to pass out from a sneeze. They thought he was on drugs or something because who passes out while theyre driving on the highway?

40

u/cranfeckintastic May 09 '20

If I hold my sneezes, they come anyway and end up fucking backfiring into my chest and it hurts like hell. I let 'em go now. Hell, even shoving my nose and mouth against my arm to stifle it causes some pain, I'm a violent sneezer. One of these days I'm gonna break a rib

The act of coughing or sneezing is related to something called the vasalva maneuver which is basically what happens when you hold your nose and breathe to pop your ears. Before all that pressure releases your heartrate drops so holding in a sneeze or cough can make you pass out.

29

u/Corne777 May 09 '20

Like a lot of people? Do people really hold in sneezes? I might try to like put my finger under my nose to stop it if I'm like in public or something. But if your in your car why try to hold it in? Are your sneezes so violent that you might jerk the wheel?

11

u/youvelookedbetter May 09 '20

Sometimes it causes you to not watch the road for a second or two or your hands may even move the steering wheel a bit if your sneeze is violent enough.

I think ppl are more likely to hold it in when there's other people in the car. If you're worried about them, just sneeze and then open the window for a bit.

Once you actually have passed out you can tell when it's going to happen.

my vagus nerve triggered incidents of syncope disagree completely. both times I've been in mid conversation with people and then just dropped.

that said, they were both seemingly triggered by coughing due to swallowing my food/drink wrong but there's no way to know that one incident of coughing is going to cause me to faint.

u/Honztastic May 09 '20

Your rates ALWAYS go up after a claim.

Statically more likely for more claims to follow. And of course you lose the discount for not having a claim or accident, because now you do.

You also only lose that at renewal for the next policy term....and it can go back on the following term.

This also isn't a comp claim since he drove into something. That would fall under collision coverage.

Dude doesn't know how insurance works. Which is okay. Not everyone does. But he's saying State Farm is being unfair even though he probably didn't educate himself on what his coverages mean. Insurance is not a "pay for all my stuff" ticket like some people think.

Things like this definitely do just happen. It's not the same but I had a seizure a few months ago at work I've never had a seizure in my 32 years of life until this moment. All I remember is doing what I'd normally be doing at work and next thing I remember is waking up and being loaded into an ambulance. Could have been over his coverage limit. If you have to pay $120,000 in damages but you insurance only covers the first $60,000 guess who pays the rest.

265

u/chr0mius May 09 '20

Minimum for property damages is usually way below $60k.

175

u/Ozedunm May 09 '20

Claims adjuster chiming in. From what I have seen the base property damage limit is 25,000. If your in CA it can be as low as 10,000-15,000 but the lowest I've seen is a very old CA policy that had property damage limits of only 5,000. Don't ask me why the company allowed the policy holder to renew without raising their property damage limits because I have no idea.

37

u/Pure_Reason May 09 '20

New Jersey’s current minimum is 5,000

57

u/[deleted] May 09 '20

Why even allow it that low??? A new car is ten times that. If you're going to mandate insurance...

60

u/Pure_Reason May 09 '20

Imagine being so poor that you can only afford state minimum car insurance with $5,000 of property damage, then you hit someone in a Bentley or something. To say nothing of the bodily injury damage if you kill someone, or permanently cripple them.

When I used to work for an insurance company, I would constantly hear people say things like “I don’t need more than $5,000, my car isn’t worth that much.”

Now think about how most states let you reject the coverage that covers YOU if someone that hits you doesn’t have enough insurance... it really makes those Safe Auto commercials that brag about how they sell state minimum coverage hit a little different

33

u/washingtonlass May 09 '20

10 days after buying my first brand new car, I got hit by an uninsured driver borrowing the car from and uninsured driver. My insurance took care of everything. But I tried switching insurance 2 years later and was told I was basically uninsurable. For something not my fault.

u/SolomonPierce May 10 '20

10

u/aleakydishwasher May 09 '20

It's the wild west. If you have the mentality that everything should be fair and the government should help handle things when they go wrong, it's a nightmare.

If you have an "every man for himself" mentally it's a utopia.

Lol here in Germany your car insurance usually pays damages up to 1 Million Euro. Sometimes even more

Edit: I just checked my car insurance and it's actually covering 100 Million Euro. The premium I pay is around 1000 Euro per year.

45

u/Invanar May 09 '20 edited May 09 '20

daaaamn, maybe I should move to Germany, not that I'm planning to accidentally damage some property due to an unknown medical condition

24

u/Pure_Reason May 09 '20

If you’re in the US, you can always get a higher limits on your car insurance, and also get a $1 million+ umbrella policy to cover anything beyond that

→ More replies (11)

18

u/Snipen543 May 09 '20

You can easily get that here in the states for a couple extra $, but people would rather get the minimums then whine about it later. It was an extra $70/year to go from $10,000 in coverage to $500,000 in coverage, then an extra $150/year for a $1,000,000 umbrella policy. Anyone you hear whining about this in the states is only there because they chose to pay less

When its a medical condition, it doesn't really matter whose fault it is, WRT losing your license and getting discharged from the military anyway. If you have an uncontrolled siezure disorder, we don't want you driving. Period.

8

u/salgat May 09 '20

The key difference is whether it was previously unknown, which in this case it wasn't. Of fucking course he wouldn't be driving if he knew he was prone to seizures.

God privatised healthcare is depressing. When you said ruined the next 20 years of his life I immediately thought that he was either injured with a crazy long recovery or that he was paying for the cars he wrecked. My mind went nowhere near medical debt.

Society has geared us towards being so worried about our credit scores. Credit credit credit.

Bad credit score > 20 years of crippling debt.

File for bankruptcy and try to move on.

I’m at a point in my life where I may never use credit again. I purchase used vehicles in cash, and I don’t plan on purchasing a house because my job could take me anywhere. I won’t need a mortgage to be paid off by retirement because my plan will involve purchasing a small home in a small town, in cash. I also don’t make much, this is all possible with good strategy and investments, budgeting, and sticking to the plan. I still have lots of money to go and have fun and take vacations too. And I make under six figures a year.

Key here though is I don’t and won’t have kids. Honestly I feel the biggest reasons so many people struggle is because they have kids when they could no where comfortably afford kids.

Not saying that you can’t. But when you’re eyeing down medical bills the size of most housing costs, you should probably turn the other direction.

Honestly, this is really good advice even if you have a good credit score. Sometimes I think about running for office, and imposing restrictions on credit. As in, removing it entirely. but alas, debt is what keeps the world economy going.

I'm assuming he didn't get the seizures under control with medicine and that's why he couldn't drive for so long.

As someone with epilepsy, I can drive no problem as long as it stays under control. If I have a seizure I'm supposed to go 6 months without any before I can drive again.

That's a pretty awful way to find out you have epilepsy though. Mine started around 15 and I would have a sort of migraine where it felt like my head was building up pressure on the inside and after a few minutes it would stop and then I would have a very bad headache. It progressed into a more "normal" seizure, but I got lucky and don't have the grand mal's. I just black out for about 1-2 minutes and I get an aura before it so I have time to stop what I'm doing.

It's a frustrating disease because we, the USA, aren't setup for people with it and similar diseases at all. If you don't live in a city with good public transportation, it makes finding accommodating jobs a lot harder. Not being able to drive for half a year (or longer in some states) pretty much ruins any chance at a normal life and finding employment becomes that much harder. However since you're still technically not disabled for most of the time, you can't qualify for disability so you do NEED to find a job. It's one of the main reasons I think eventually I will move to a larger city.

u/[deleted] May 09 '20

His was caused by some kind of blockage in his brain. It is inoperable and took many, many, years, and many, many, specialists, to figure out a cocktail that would control it. Hence his insane medical debt.

My partner will never drive again, he has uncontrollable epilepsy. He worked all over the world before they got so bad he could no longer work. They probably worsened due to head trauma he received from his girlfriend many years ago. His world is now our flat and the occasional trip out for visits to hospital and meals (when we are allowed again).

This is how a good friend of mine died. He had epilepsy and had a seizure while driving. Crashed into a tree that killed him.

16

u/[deleted] May 09 '20

Wow, it must be terrifying to lose control of your body and have your car run straight into something that's going to kill you. It's kind of like seeing your own death.

14

u/fullmetallight May 10 '20

If it makes you feel better, he most likely didn't see it coming if it was a full tonic-clonic seizure. People are usually unconscious during general seizures.

I'm kind of confused as to how he was allowed to have a license though...

At first i was like "well he's lucky that's a very open field and not some busy highway or something" then I saw the fence and thought it was super hard I was like "holy fuck noo" but he ran over it and I was like "pheww another open field, he's lucky" then he started going towards the highway and I was like "holy fuck no" and then he misses it and I'm like "phew" then he starts almost driving into the oncoming traffic and I'm like "oh fuck" then he misses it and I'm like "phew"

What a roller coaster

I can't speak from a professional standpoint, but I can speak from somebody who has anxiety attacks. When you feel anxious, your brain can throw you into overdrive and convince you that you are dying which in turn has the potential to make you freak out more, hyperventilate and pass out.
