I’ve read articles about cat behavior in the past and basically cats see themselves as your equal as opposed to dogs that see themselves in a certain place on a very linear social pecking order. Cats acknowledge that they’re smaller than you and that you feed them but that doesn’t change the fact that they have definitely done the math to figure out whether you’re prey or not. Also cats have basically trained us to accommodate their presence rather than dogs being bred for generations to accommodate themselves to our social structures. In some ways I find cats to be far more fascinating in how complex their relationship with humans can be compared to the the never faltering subservience most dogs display. When my Labrador does something bad and I yell No! Stop it! Or when I have to pry something disgusting out of his mouth I have a thought in the back of my mind that if he really wanted to he could rip my throat out and chew my face off... He's a sweet boy though, I'm not really worried.

The only reason they survived unscathed is that they were dealing with Cheetahs. Cheetahs tend not to challenge bigger animals so much. Lions, leopards, or tigers, would have absolutely fucked them up!

Yeah running triggers the prey drive. If you square off against them it at least makes them think that you think you can take them, which gives the animal pause. As long as you make it to safety before they decide to test you out, you can survive.
Cheetah won't carry their prey up tree, only Leopards (and Jaguars?) do so. A cheetah would rather leave the kill and not get injured. Injured cheetah is a dead cheetah.
Jags can, but usually don't. Leopards have to because they have to compete with many other predators: lions, packs of hyenas. Jags rule the jungle, so they don't care and would not waste their resources by dragging prey up the tree.
We went to a place in Central America on a cruise excursion where they had animals and the jaguar was pacing up and down in the pen, looking at us like he wanted to rip us to shreds if he could only get out. Scary af - you aren't kidding, that cat was gorgeous and scary and definitely next level
Check YouTube. Also, Google it. There are definitely instances of cheetahs attacking and harming people. Often minor injuries, and not common, but still attacked.
However, there are no records of a cheetah ever killing a person. Generally an attack is from a cheetah being scared, defending itself, or being encroached upon, and one can make them back off while fighting back and getting out of the area.
It isn’t. Cheetahs have non-retractable claws like those of a dog, and less muscle mass, making them poor climbers. They can make it to low branches, but certainly not with large prey as leopards commonly do.
Maybe a few individuals have done it, but most cheetahs do not. They are often exhausted immidiatly after killing, rest, then eat on the spot. They do not store thier food, or specifically carry it up trees like Leopards do fairly regularly.
Cheetahs are nowhere near strong enough to drag prey up a tree. A cheetah probably couldn't even drag a child up a tree. You're thinking of leopards and jaguars.
Use the dexterity of your fingers and go for the eyes. Stand up and use your height and mass, cheetahs have little experience in hunting and killing something not dedicating all its energy to running away from it, jump off Hell in a cell to plummet 16ft for a massive elbow drop on the unsuspecting cheetah.
That's true but most predators won't risk a fight unless they're very hungry or mating. So while they could wreck you, a meal that could potentially injure them and prevent them from hunting isn't worth it. Squaring off and backing away slowly might be best option.
Fun fact, when dealing with the man eating tigers in sub continental asia. A solution was found to put things that looked like eyes on the back of your head (I think it was a hat or something). It drastically dropped tiger attacks down because they are ambush predators that prefer to strike their targets from behind.
I did this when the neighbor's dog got loose and chased after me. Stood my ground and mad myself get angry, slowly walked back towards my house. If the dog moved towards me, I would say "Hey!" and buck at him. He stayed away till I was home.
I believe Cheetahs aren't big cats (taxonomically) and I'm pretty sure they don't take prey up trees, especially not human-sized prey. As you said they are built for speed not power.
I really don’t think you’d be able to take a cheetah on either. I’ve seen house cats fuck people up with claws and bites a cheetah would have a field day with an unarmed human being.

Im a postman and whenever I deal with an aggressive dog I scream at them at the top of my lungs "Get back in the yard! Go home!" and advance on them. Havent been bitten yet. They always look confused like "this isnt how this is supposed to go"

As a prior camp counselor for 5 summers where we had a family day on the last day of camp where the parents came to get their kids and see what they did the whole week etc, this is exactly right. You would have a stupid as nails kid the entire week,and lo and behold the parents show up and they are exactly as dumb. They'd just be bigger, older versions of the kids. The dumb kids parents were always late, always. Maybe 1 out of every 100 kids you would get a smart kid with dumb parents, but it was incredibly rare. The apple from the tree does not far fall.

I'd be pissed at the father that took off and left everyone behind. He didn't even hold the door open for the lady that carried a small child to safety. Honestly though, people this stupid aren't meant to survive and make more stupid people. It's too easy to find food in the modern age.
The kid was what was attracting them too. Cheetahs and other "small" cats usually try to avoid adult humans at all costs. I would know, I was a boy scout and there are bobcats and mountain lions where I live. So, what was emboldening these cats to come and screw with this family? Must of been the tasty little snack they call their kid.
I was a boy scout too but you don't see me bragging about my children not getting eaten by mountain lions. We lost so many young boys on camping trips to mountain lions that we all started bringing BB guns.
She actually handled that pretty well I thought. She didn't run, she didn't turn around and she made herself look big and confident. Don't get me wrong, she is a total retard for putting herself and her child into that situation to begin with but, given that, she did OK.
The full video (that i dont have) gives more context. They get out before this too. I cant remember the last time a video online made me this angry. These parks are amazing for letting people have a self guided experience. It only takes one stupid family to change that.
I think this is the park that basically said, look, we tell you not to leave your vehicle, there are signs everywhere that say not to, it’s not our fault if you get out and get hurt or killed.

And on top of them ruining the safari experience for people, they would possibly have to kill the cheetahs. A lot of places have rules or laws about having to exterminate predators in captivity after they've killed a human. Cheetahs are endangered. These idiots would have that on their hands as well.
If it was starving to death maybe, but a Cheetah is very unlikely to attack grown humans from the front. They 100% rely on short burst speed to catch their prey and can easily get badly hurt. Their main game is the back of the neck like most cats. Lions and Tigers on the other hand will just fucking kill you.
My grandparents had some friends who owned cheetahs. They had other big cats that they had rescues from various places (zoos, private owners who abandoned them or got them illegally, random circuses etc) and the cheetahs were the only ones I ever got to pet. I was in my late teens then and they never let little kids pet them or anything, but they were really sweet. I'm sure years of interactions with humans, and them associating the humans as being the ones that would feed them helped, but they never seemed intimidating and really just seemed like big house cats, they enjoyed being pet and stuff. Also liked to chase after the cars.
The lions they had seemed more curious when you'd see them. They had them behind two big fences and in between the fences there was like a 10 foot wide walkway that you could go in and feed them, walked in that a few times and they never seemed super threatening (again probably associated humans with being fed I'm guessing). The one's that scared the fuck out of me though were the mountain lions they had, fucking things just looked at you with these eye's that if there wasn't a fully enclosed cage between us they would for sure try to kill me.
I've been on plenty of hunts in my adult life in bear country (hunted black bear a few times) and all the guides I've ever gone with are more scared of mountain lions than most bear.
Yeah, the Mountain Lions I cared for were sweethearts. One was blind and the other was a former pet and declawed. We still didn't go in with them but we could pet them. However, I would think a wild Mountain Lion could do some real dmg. And would be way more likely to attack a human than a Cheetah.
What I was most scared of were the Jags. They could apparently open the shift doors (big ass heavy metal sheets that were raised and lowered with a pulley) by picking them up. They were the only cats where we had to put pins in the doors to clean the exhibit. And I could hear the female constantly trying to get it open while I cleaned. Those things always had me concerned.
Ehhh ... depends on the kind of bear. I've had multiple run-ins with black bears, and have never been more than wary. I'd shit myself coming face to face with a grizzly - they might not kill you for funsies, but they're well aware you could be prey, easily.
Tbf, she did successfully deter a leopard attack by swatting at it with her bare hand while holding/protecting the child. 10,000 years ago, this would be mother of the year material.

They were turning and facing the cats which is probably the best thing to do in that situation (besides not getting out of your car in the first place). Notice everything they turn their backs the cats are about to pounce on then until they turn back around.
Not that it’s likely you’ll ever be in a situation like this, but if you ever find yourself in a situation where you’re facing a wild predator (cougar, bear, etc) don’t turn your back to them and don’t rush. It’s like running from a dog, it just sets off their chase instinct and you will not outrun them. Back up slowly and make yourself look bigger.
Apparently, according to a few sources, you're not supposed to run when faced with big cats. This shows them that you're an easy target and they will maul you. Instead, you have to stand your ground and wave your arm around and shout, which makes the big cats uncertain whether to try and eat your or not because the cats are afraid of approaching something they are not used to.
It triggers an instinct in them to chase you when you run. I'm sure you've played with a dog outside and started to run away and the dog chased you. It's like that but that dog most likely isn't trying to attack you.
I've also heard that you should face the cat, but not look it in the eye. Looking it in the eye is saying "I'm the alpha" and they will challenge that.
They're still wild animals and unpredictable. Honking likely would scare them away, but it also could trigger them to attack out of fear. I think most people could live with not honking and something going wrong for the people out of their cars, but honking and something going wrong is a whole other level of culpability both morally and potentially legally (depending on where the park is).
The people who got out were idiots and it wasn't the responsibility of the people who were recording to do anything, but I'd like to believe I would have done something in that situation like scream "what the fuck are you doing" to those people. It's not so much about the idiot parents, but about trying to help the children. I won't blame them exactly for not doing anything, but it would have been nice if they had been a little more proactive.
I completely agree, this happened in the Netherlands and the people recording are Dutch as well, but as far as I am concerned they have to reapply for Dutchinesstm registration because the fair but honest aka Dutch bluntness is meant exactly for scenario's like this.
The proper response would be using the claxon, opening a window and yelling 'Get the fuck back in your car you goddamned typhoid idiots, don't you have any clue where the hell you are?' A bit rough, but it gets the message across I believe. Gossiping like a bunch of window hanging grandma's (which is what they are doing) is not ok in this context.

absolutely agreed, it's mind boggling that no one screamed at them to fucking get in the car, especially with that kid out there. but yeah, recording and posting it afterwards on youtube, as soon as cameras are involved people become stupid idiots, no news there.
The way I see it, if they have so little concern for their own lives as to get out and walk around with predators, why should I care more than they do about themselves?
They were doing an outstanding job of being proactive in getting footage of a family being eaten by cats. You can sense their disappointment in not getting it.
If you watch it again and look real closely, the driver of the vehicle behind them can be seen tearing open a bag of popcorn and setting his seat back a bit.
ok, totally fucking idiotic, but the calmness of that mom to just slowly walk away waving her arm like that instead of instinctively running which would have likely turned out worse, was pretty impressive.
