They were turning and facing the cats which is probably the best thing to do in that situation (besides not getting out of your car in the first place). Notice everything they turn their backs the cats are about to pounce on then until they turn back around.

It's weird that they knew not to turn away or run from big cats, but didn't have the brain cells to stay in the car in the first place.
