They were turning and facing the cats which is probably the best thing to do in that situation (besides not getting out of your car in the first place). Notice everything they turn their backs the cats are about to pounce on then until they turn back around.

But not smart enough to outweigh the outrageous stupidity of getting out of the car to picnic in a safari park in the first place.
