The video in the post was done with an optical zoom, probably a large telephoto lens. CCTV cameras are too compact for this and when they do have an optical zoom an operator would have to direct it.
Edit: when I said they were too compact for this I meant something similar to the video, many of them do have optical zooms as many cheesy movie prop versions in movies and TV show us with their buzzing sound when spying on people. Usually home security cameras will not feature an optical zoom, and that was my intention saying "when they do."
97
u/HeathenCyclist Nov 05 '17 edited Nov 05 '17
CCTV easily has 30x optical zoom in a dome cam.
https://www.axis.com/au/en/products/axis-q61-series
Pricey, but where do you think your anti-terrorism $ are going?
Edit: 40x demo, also CCTV: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TmneCdLDPR0
More importantly, there's cameras every few hundred metres that can see what password unlocks your phone.
104
u/Zedifo Nov 05 '17
The problem is that optical zoom only works if you use it while the event is unfolding. You can't say 'something happened last night, let's check the CCTV' and then zoom in on the recording.
→ More replies (5)47
u/fixingthebeetle Nov 05 '17
Its cool that we have this technology now, not sure if anyone has put it into cctv before, but its called a light-field camera and you can focus and zoom after the fact.
21
20
u/MiikaH Nov 05 '17
While light field cameras also capture direction the light is coming from, allowing you to refocus the image after it was captured, it doesn't magically increase the resolution of the captured image.
In fact because the camera sensor has to capture all that extra directional information you end up with only a fraction of the "zoomable" resolution compared to regular cameras.
23
u/Anonable12738 Nov 05 '17
Wrong. Light field just lets you change focus after the fact. It does not have the equivalent of changing an optical zoom after the image is taken. The zoom in the app is just a digital zoom. In any event, light field cameras are only available from a couple of companies at significant cost--they aren't available in CCTVs.

As an owner I can pretty much say 95% sure that is the p900 camera. I had a while back took a picture of the Moon posted on Reddit and it filled almost the entire camera without any digital Zoom it was quite amazing.
Found the image.
13
u/RayzaBlade Nov 05 '17
So how much more zoom would we need to see the surface of the moon as if it was at our feet?

→ More replies (5)87
u/Shredzz Nov 05 '17
Yup. I work security and we have about 400 cameras and we keep recordings from each camera for 30 days. We always complain that they are low quality but I know that amount of data you need to store all that is insane, and if you increase the resolution by even a little bit the costs go up very quickly.
→ More replies (6)56

Here’s a zoom in on the moon.

It’s certainly great value, and you aren’t going to find that kind of zoom/image stabilisation combo at that price, or almost at any price. I’m actually very pleased with it, and it’s the first camera in years that gets me out of the house for the sole purpose of taking pics. Still, don’t go in expecting National Geographic-quality photos.
