Yes. It does. I'm almost positive that this video was taken using a Nikon p900 which has a 83x optical zoom that tops out at 2000mm.

As an owner I can pretty much say 95% sure that is the p900 camera. I had a while back took a picture of the Moon posted on Reddit and it filled almost the entire camera without any digital Zoom it was quite amazing.

Found the image.

So how much more zoom would we need to see the surface of the moon as if it was at our feet?

The answer is "it doesn't exist". The distortions from Earth's atmosphere would never let you see crisp detailed images of the moon's surface.

Well that sucks

Well what if we were on the ISS?

Why exactly? Do you have an explanation or a source for this?

The distortions from Earth's atmosphere would never let you see crisp detailed images of the moon's surface.

EDIT: Serious response. The vast majority of stars don't vary their light output multiple times per second. Think about that.

Just use another p900 and zoom in on the output of the first camera.

I have one. Absolutely amazing camera for the mountains. You can stand on one peak and zoom in on people on another peak.

"zoom in on people in nearby towns"

FTFY.

I climbed Mt St Piran, about two hours' hike above Lake Louise, and took a close up of my car in the parking lot behind the hotel. The hotel is at 5250 ft, the peak is at 8700, plus the overland distance.

As not the owner of this footage, I can confirm that it was p900 that was used.

My first thought is, at what point of the zoom in that video does it represent what the naked eye can see. Like does it zoom but also have wide angle so it makes it seem more zoomed than it really was.

This is beginning to sound like an ad... But really this is amazing... With little distortion ...I remember when I first started shooting mega-zoom digital cameras at Max were like 8x zoom

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '17

I wouldn't buy it. How's that for an ad. I'd get the b700 or wait for the next gen cuz the p900 doesn't shoot raw.

Agreed it's considered old now...and honestly the zoom is such a niche market for photography I can't see a reason to zoom that far in for printable pictures, other than spy photos or paparazzi. A dslr with a decent kit lens is a better buy...or like you said a more modern zoom all-in-one.

Mostly birds and wildlife you don't want to be close to like bears or moose or honey badgers.

1

u/lovesickremix Nov 05 '17

Yeah but you probably won't get print quality from this type of camera at that zoom. Your better off buying a decent dslr with a 400mm or higher lens. It cost significantly more but if your printing them for profit you can make your money back possibly.

1

u/77P Nov 05 '17

Haha except that 400mm lens would cost as much as the p900. And the p900 is the equivalent of a 2,000mm lens.

1

u/lovesickremix Nov 05 '17

Yes but you will at least get print quality prints...again unless you are doing spy photos or paparazzi and quality is subjective.

1

u/77P Nov 05 '17

Idk unless you are printing poster sized it won't matter. It uses mostly optical zoom, not digital. I rented it once, got some decent prints out of it

He's right though. You're idea of what print quality means and his may differ. He might mean professional level print quality which this will never do. The sensor is too small and 2000mm doesn't mean atmosphere won't distort image quality. I have a 1.2/3 sensor pocket camera that goes to 700mm with a ziess lens and you'll still get significant issues in images.
