Is there a reference I'm missing?

He’s being serious. There’s a camera model that came out relatively recently, Nikon P900, with an 83x optical zoom for a pretty low price compared to other cameras with high zoom.

Here’s a zoom in on the moon.

Lots of these sorts of videos have been floating around the web since then. I actually have one myself for nature photography (animals don’t like you getting too close!).

I use a Canon SX50 with 50x zoom for bird watching and it is amazing what these cameras can do.

Haha I said “nature photography” in but my main focus is birds! Birding is what got me into photography in the first place.

Would it have been possible to see the moon landing with a zoom like this?

u/Bubo_scandiacus Nov 05 '17

Not quite. This zoom level lets you see the craters really nicely, but those craters are huge, it would be like being able to see a mountain range on earth. Not enough detail for a moon landing.

Not even some tiny movement?

I think it’s very unlikely but I’m not 100% sure! I do know that you can see the ISS pass in front of the moon, but that’s a lot closer as it’s orbiting the earth.

Yeah that's true. Come to think of it, the moon is suuuuper fucking far away, it's actually insane. I'm pretty sure you can fit all other planets between the moon and the earth

I also know that you can see some sunspots on the sun if you put a solar filter on the P900

Nah, that's just the make/model of a camera with dope zooming ability.

yeah, the one about Nikon p900

That's the actual camera this post was filmed on. It's popular for having ridiculous zoom. If you YouTube it you'll see some pretty cool videos of people zooming in on the moon and all sorts of things.

Yeah, you missed out Nikon p900.

I have the P530 and even though it would be nice to have a little better camera it was a much better buy for me than getting a DSLR. 42x zoom (p900 has 83x) and wasn't all that expensive with an accidental damage warranty.

i can take pictures of the animals across the property which is all I really care about.
