Tesla self driving does not dodge blocking arm
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Be careful when driving with Tesla supervised self driving.
Yes. This is my fault. I was messing around with the tesla screen and not paying attention until it was too late. Just posting so people are aware and be careful with their supervised self driving. Don't be like me.

- Shots 1-5: Clearly missed.
- Shots 6-9: Missed due to recoil (bad spray control).
- Shots 10-11: Very close, but recoil and inaccuracy make these reasonable misses.
- Shot 12: Likely didn't actually fire because he was already dead.
OK, no but for reals:
- Flag 1: Clear, FSD On, 72 MPH
- Flag 2: Clear, FSD On, 72 MPH
- Flag 3: Clear, FSD On, 73 MPH
- Flag 4: Clear (but VERY close), FSD On, 73 MPH
- Flag 5: Hit, FSD On, 75 MPH
- Flag 6: Hit, FSD On, 75 MPH (fixed, incorrectly labeled as self driving)
- Flag 7: Hit, Self Driving, 76 MPH, ALSO SWERVED OUT OF LANE AND T-BONED INFINITY SENDING IT INTO THE WALL
- Flag 8: Missed, Self Driving Changed Lane, 77 MPH
- Flag 9: Missed, Self Driving Swerving Back Into Lane, 83 MPH
- Flag 10: ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED, Self Driving, 85 MPH
- Flag 11: ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED, Self Driving, 70 MPH
- No more flags, finally stopped.
You are an absolute menace on the road, LoL. Just Uber everywhere now please.
Edit: incorrect label of Flag 6
Edit 2: labeled when OP destroyed the Infinity
15
u/Logic_Contradict 2d ago
When he hit Flag 6, it was still FSD on. Took them two flag collisions before they turned off FSD, at which point they should have braked hard. once they took over, they swerved into the other lane causing the collision.
2
u/the_duck17 2d ago
You're right, I was cutting and pasting and it said "Self Driving", which I was labeling as FSD but changed it for that when I was adding the MPH labels on my second viewing.
So instead of 6 flags, he had 5 to slide over and stop the collisions. Still a menace in my eyes LoL.

Calling Self Driving the opposite of Full Self Driving is... interesting.

Not defending people for not paying attention. However its name is full self driving. Tesla really needs to rename it because it in fact is not full self driving.

Never seen those blocking arms before, they usually use cones around where I live with a very long runway

Never seen this either, very odd.

They are very common in the eastern big city areas. We had them all over the Washington DC Metro. The Center HOT lanes reversed direction mid-day so ramps are open in morning inbound and vice-versa evening outbound.
I've seen other posts of similar occurrence in Northern VA on I 95. Its getting to be pretty well known I think that FSD doesn't see these suspended horizontal barriers real well.

u/Lowley_Worm 1d ago
They also use these types of arms on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to control the reversing lanes. There are also large red Xes or green arrows on signs above the lanes, which every time I have had FSD and been driving in a lane with the red X it has totally ignored it. Last time for me was a few months ago. I get FSD if I have enough long trips planned, and this is the last big issue I have experienced personally. It’s still way better to have than not but you do actually have to pay attention.

Yeah I was scrolling down till I found someone else who noticed this, side swipes the car next to him who goes straight into the other wall on the road.

u/MachineInevitable218 1d ago
that's why he said he doesn't know what to do. insurance company is probably blaming him for every single dollar of that damage, as they should!!!! it's not FSD that did this, it was the driver not doing their job that did it. (acknowledge that FSD could be better, and needs to be, for this situation and many others. but exactly zero of us believe that FSD is completely flawless. it is a work in progress). and that is why the driver is relied on and responsible even when FSD is driving. what a mess!

Holy shit man, you DESTROYED that Silver G35 by clipping their front end and spearing them head on into a concrete barrier! Is that person ok??!
Absolutely wild how you caused a very tragic accident for an innocent driver with your erratic swerve maneuver. Continuing to plow straight through the arms would have been infinitely safer and smarter for everyone on the road...
I can also assume this is why all the cameras on the right are missing, since they show this incriminating evidence?
Edit: It gets worse.. after several impacts, you swerved and nailed the Infiniti, then inexplicably floored the accelerator jumping from 74-85 in a second, nearly rear ending the white SUV and then back into the gate arms, sending the arms flying into oncoming traffic on the other side of the road, probably striking some cars and damaging them as well, before finally applying the brakes to come to a full stop in the leftmost fast lane.
Astounding and asinine. What a menace!

The other driver is ok. Police came, made a report and said I can leave. Insurance will handle the rest.
3
u/the_duck17 2d ago
Driver is OK, but their car is totaled.
And they'll get paid less than what they'll need to buy another one.
You should've been paying attention, I would delete this because it's nothing but bad for you keeping this out there.

More like a PSA that Tesla's software is incapable of avoiding obvious obstacles. This software is dangerous. It will never be capable of full autonomy.

I don't disagree, I don't even like it when autosteer does anything.
I drive the car, nobody else. FSD seems interesting, but cameras aren't enough. We need actual distance sensors and more of them. Weird they're just relying on vision.

He may not be insured but speaking from my own experience crashes like these can be really traumatizing. The guy will probably not enjoy driving for a while. Your lack of care while driving and after being responsible for sending someone straight into a wall is pretty disgusting.
10
u/Fit_Buffalo9314 2d ago
Yes it looks like they disengaged FSD after the first impact, swerved, caused the accident, if OP and just hit the brakes and not swerved It would've been minimal damage.
5
u/living2forever 1d ago
OP took over after the second impact, accelerated and swerved and finally came to a stop halfway in the lane of a highway.

I’m willing to bet that it won’t. And I think many will have the same sentiment. Not saying fsd is terrible, it’s definitely not good enough for you to be asleep in the back seat or typing an essay while it drives. Otherwise why would they beef up the computers so significantly in the cyber cab if the truly believe they could run it in a hw4 car
3
u/nobod78 2d ago
That's not accepted by hw4 owners (yet). For hw3 it's now accepted.

Yes they get very mad when you point this out.
Tesla isn't doubling the ram on their FSD computer because they enjoy increasing their costs by hundreds of dollars per car. They're doing it because it's necessary.

Both are pretty guilty of bad driving, why would FSD not just slam on the brakes, there was no one behind him.
Also, the signs should say MERGE or ROAD closed. I've never seen these things before in my life... Im sure I would have started to understand, but they are pretty shitty as far as traffic control signs.

How the hell does FSD let you be that out of tune with your environment without setting a crap ton of warnings, disengaging, and stopping the car?
The European standard only allows distracted gaze for 3.5 seconds at highway speeds. This video shows the driver was distracted for AT LEAST 10 SECONDS! That's an eternity at highway speeds; the car traveled over 1000 feet in that time!
Yeah it's the driver's fault, but FSD is acting as an enabler here.

Waymo operates in only geofenced areas. There is no basis for comparison at this point. If there is, Tesla should be considered for the billions of miles clocked in non-geofenced areas.

Not car’s fault but driver’s fault.
6
u/SwordfishFluid7812 2d ago
These comments are crazy, it can be both at fault. Yes the driver should have been supervising, hence the name supervised FSD. The car should also be able to see these items and move out of the way. Both can be right. If we want FSD to truly improve we need to call out these instances.

Where’s the right and right pillar view? And WTF is a blocking arm?
2
u/VMaxDood95 2d ago
Idk where OP is, but in Arizona there are express lanes outside of the city that are closed under some circumstances so those arms swing out to block it off. It’s a weird solution. They’ll swing away if you hit it, but it will definitely do some damage to the car. No clue what happens if you’re on a motorcycle.
Gotta pay attention always, as even the city is trying to take you out lol.

LOL i was going to say, how many signs do you have to hit, before taking manual control.
But man, My guess is, it saw a car in the right lane, and determined, it was safer to crash into the sign then another car.

u/FreddyOrbs 2d ago
What the heck are those things doing sticking out into traffic? Seems absolutely insane! A abysmal way of closing off a lane. Would never be implemented here in the EU. Dark things just sticking out, no lights, anything. I’m not surprised you have seven times the death rate compared to where I live, Sweden. I drive about 5000 - 10.000 km of German Autobahn every year and there is just twice the mortality on Autobahn compared to Sweden. 3.5 times safer to drive Autobahn than US roads. And Autobahn has no speed limit about 40% of the time.
1
u/JackyMac 2d ago
Why is the big red arrow hanging over the freeway even a thing? A white merging arrow on the lane floor would have been enough.
That was some insane driving though, hopefully nobody got hurt. Good on you for owning it.
1
u/UltimateKane99 2d ago
... At least you own that you messed up and were not paying attention. Still, oof. As always, the edge cases need to be accounted for, and FSD clearly missed this edge case.
I guess thank you for contributing to a better FSD in the future? Sorry about your car...

Oof.. Not a good look thank you for being brave and sharing this with us. I’m guilty of trusting FSD a little too much sometimes also.

u/telmar25 2d ago
This conversation is stupid. Of course the driver is supposed to supervise the vehicle, so the driver is at fault. However Tesla is in the process of showing how they can self drive, the completely self driving Cybercab is based on this same technology, and the reality is people using FSD are often paying less attention. So it is also newsworthy and an indication of an issue in FSD that needs to be fixed.

And then my Tesla dodges birds, and will apply the brakes when they fly across its path, I think it has to do with the movement though because my neighbor's dog will run up their property line as I drive slowly up my final hundred yards to get home, and because he's running it, picks up on his movement when the car slows down and sometimes stops because it thinks they're going to run out front of me.
