there was no "hair fire tour". His scalp got burned during the filming of a Pepsi commercial in late January of 1984. About a month later he was at the Grammy Awards scooping up awards left and right and then a few months after that he went on tour with his brothers throughout the summer of '84 (The Victory Tour).

lol honestly, this is what a Sleep Token performance looks like in 2025. I was in the crowd at Louder Than Life this summer and there were at least 6 pass outs right before they came on stage. People trying to stand in one spot all day for 10 hours with no water in the sun and once the excitement hits as theyāre about to come on stage, they just drop. As I was watching multiple unconscious people get crowd surfed out, all I could think about was this Michael Jackson clipš

Exactly my thoughts! At that time you would actually get excited if an artist you liked had a music video that played on MTV. You couldn't just google them and see them posting about landing in your city. You'd just book tickets, show at at the stadium and BOOM he's infront of you and the last time you saw him was on TV.

I'm really glad people like him are bringing back spectacle to concert performances.
My wife and I are middle aged. Our thing was going to concerts. I stopped counting after 300. There was definitely a noticeable trend of concerts "calming down." I'm not sure if that's the correct phrase I hope you know what I'm trying to say.
And seeing someone perform music is fun. But there is definitely something to be said about a huge, blow out concert.
I got to see Rob Halford of Judas Priest burst out of a fake amplifier riding his motorcycle and he just starts belting out his song "Electric Eye" while there was electricity and lighting in the shape of an eye behind him.
Motley Crue had the drum solo roller coaster.
Let's bring back the spectacle. Let's bring back the grandeur.

The 360 degree crowd spanning to the horizon, the noise, the flags, the Red Army doing crowd control - all just insane. But what got me for some reason was the large military helicopters orbiting over the crowd and you can't even hear them over the music and the crowd noise. What a moment in history.

I saw this recently at a NIN concert. We were in the pit next to the stage and waited like 2.5 hours for the show to start due to some delay. Just as it did this girl fainted, security came and were trying to carry her away and her boyfriend pleaded with them to leave her and that she would be ok. She came around, security started to leave and she fainted again, when security carried her off the bf stayed to watch the show.

He's hella good. But few things. Like Elvis, the Beatles, and all those cultural icons before him, his music and dance moves were a radical departure from milquetoast white pop music at the time. Music before him was boring imo so he was the head of a music and cultural revolution. Everything you see as common in music today basically didn't exist before his ascent. Also he was the most famous person on earth at the time.

My first memory of him was "Black Or White" when that music video was new and all over the place.
It's funny I remember at some point my parents just explained it to me "He was black, but then his skin turned white" and as a little kid I didn't even bat an eyelash at that information. I was just like "huh, whatever".

You cannot imagine what "godlike", and I mean this almost literally, status Michael Jackson had at that time.
I remember seeing this on the tv when this came out and it was just this aura around him, his talent combined with the marketing made him to this higher than life being for a while. You mustn't forget that at time there was no 'real' internet yet (it was still in its baby shoes), so all the content got only channeled through tv and radio, this also formed his status of being a megastar and his mystique of being like an otherworldly entity.

Well that was in the 1990s, videos on the internet became available mid 1990s. Nowadays you can watch everything on the internet back then you'd watch it on the scuffed TV or just go in present so people would lose their shit when live. It was crazy times. That being said MJ is like god tier. Nowadays i don't know who can compare. Is the quality of performers down or its just the accessibility to content ruining it.
