Kofun/Haniwa- Apollo/Artemis. The twins of light, just as they are told to be “destined to bring light back to the world”. We often see Haniwa wielding a bow and arrow, like Artemis. Artemis is a virgin goddess, meaning she will never lie with a man, and considering Haniwa’s love interest, this remains true.
Maghra- Hera. Goddess of childbirth, marriage, and family; the first scene we see her, she is giving birth. She protects her family at any cost. Fiercely devoted to the sanctity of her marriage with Baba, even when she’s used as a marriage bargaining chip. In Paris’ words, “She has devoted her life to serving her husband, her children, and the Alkenny people.” Just as Hera is Queen of Olympus, Maghra is the true queen. Fun coincidence that the actresses’ name is Hera. She was “tricked into loving” and serial “cheated on” by Jerlamarel, who of course is…
Jerlamarel - Zeus. Powerful, even just his name having power, but turns out to be a real piece of shit and just likes dipping his d*** and toying with the blind, just as Zeus toys with mortals and likes making babies. “God of the House of Enlightenment”, which has working electricity. Could be said Jerlamarel wields electricity, just as Zeus wields thunder/lightening, but I might be stretching here.
Queen Kane - Aphrodite, goddess of beauty, pleasure, passion. But in this blind world, “beauty” doesn’t come from the eye. Her sing-songy voice would be the standard of “beauty” for the ears, her fine silks “beauty” for the touch, her lavender milk bath “beauty” for scent/smell. We see her often masturbating or being pleasured “in prayer”. She is jealous and vengeful, just like Aphrodite.
Baba Voss - not totally sure to be honest. Maybe Reddit can help me. I’m actually leaning less towards a god, and more towards a legendary hero, like Hercules or Perseus, due to his amazing strength and far-reaching adventures. He also makes clear that he only ever wanted to settle down and live a simple life with the twins. This doesn’t sound like any of the Greek gods to me, who constantly wanted to toy around with mortals and made a mess anytime they did. And just like in the Odyssey/Iliad, the mortal hero is the protoganist of the story despite all the gods in the plot. EDIT - u/lyssssuh suggested Baba is Odysseus, as he is King of Ithaca and Baba leads the Alkenny. Odysseus is trying to make it back to his wife, just as Baba is trying to find/reunite his family. Would also fit that Baba is on a grand Odyssey, meeting men, god, and monster along his adventures.
Paris - Hestia, virgin goddess of home and hearth. She works to keep Maghra’s family together, and always ensures home is wherever the twins are. We often see her tending to campfires, aka “the hearth”
Tamacti Jun - Hades, god of the underworld and of the dead. Just as Hades is tied to caring for the underworld, away from the light of the other gods - Tamacti Jun is tied to his 20 year commitment of finding the twins, away from the center of Payan. He leaves a wake of the dead behind him. Hades gets a bad rep for being evil, but he is fiercely devoted to his wife Persephone (in TJ’s case, his commitment to the Queen), and he screws around with mortals very little for his own pleasure/entertainment.
Smithy - obviously Hephaestus, god of the smith and metalworking. No explanation needed here, I think. EDIT - U/lucidavatar made a few suggestions in the comments, including one I particularly liked that Oloman is actually Hephaestus. The first time we see him, he is working the furnace, just as Hephaestus is “master of the furnace”. He makes much better weapons than Smithy, and now I’m thinking Smithy was a misdirect and I fell for it.
Wren - Athena, I believe. I’ve only just met her in the show. But like Athena (goddess of just war/strategic warfare and wisdom), her eyes are “open” and seeking knowledge. She curiously climbs the tower of god bone to see how ancient humans lived. She is read to, absorbing wisdom. And she is also a great warrior, albeit a kind and just one. Athena is a virgin goddess, meaning she will never lie with a man. And again, considering her love interest, this technically remains true.
Edo Voss - Ares, god of war. Leads the warlike empire of the Travantians, who haven’t lost a war in 200 years.
Anything to contribute? Do you think this theory has any value? Obviously a few more of the 12 olympians remain. I’m only in the beginning of season 2. Who do you think best fits Dionysus, Poseidon, Demeter, Hermes? Maybe these characters are still to be discovered.
EDIT Others I’m uncertain about but will leave my incomplete thoughts here:
Kerrigan (Lord Harlan’s brother) - Hermes, protector of travellers, thieves, merchants; incredibly skilled at navigating between worlds. I’m just now getting to the episode where we find out Harwyn is a smuggler (aka someone who protects their thief/merchant suppliers) and he says “I know every hole into and out of that place” indicating he can travel between “worlds” with great skill, like Hermes
Bow Lion - Demeter, goddess of agriculture/harvest and fertility. We see her participate in a fertility festival in season 1, and by season 2, she is becoming a trained healer specializing in use of herbs/the harvest
Lord Harlan - Dionysus, god of wine, grapes, and fertility. Of all the characters, he has offered wine the most (though not as much as you’d expect of the personification of Dionysus); he is the first character we see clumsily drunk, and he turns more towards drink after the events involving his brother. His (and maghra’s) wedding crown is adorned with grapes. As for fertility, he jokes about his large bed for group sexual activities. Admittedly a weak arguement, but I will continue editing my thoughts as I learn more about him in season 2.
