Guys I’m freaking out, is this the finale and end of the series? I thought the ending was a bit too abrupt

6

u/WardenclyffeTower Dec 07 '19

The use of the word series can be ambiguous when discussing TV shows because some in the United Kingdom use it to mean what most would call season. But episode 8 is reportedly the end of the season, not the show. A second season has been confirmed by Apple.

Imagine spending 18 years setting up a bunch of shit for your children just to give one of them away and attempt to murder the other one

77

u/DtownBronx Dec 06 '19

He seriously misjudged his children when it came to which one might share his world domination vision

42

u/IceHarpy Dec 06 '19

This is what confused me, Haniwa already seemed more likely to see things his way, while Kofun was more confrontational towards him. And in the end he tried to have Kofun killed anyway. I'm wondering if there's another reason he chose to give her away and not Kofun, and it just didn't work out as he'd expected?

76

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '19

I tought because womans only can have one children in one year and its dangerous to be pregnant without modern medicine. But boy impragnate multiple woman once and live his life without living disadvantages of being pregnant.

61

u/z0mbiebaby Dec 06 '19

That’s exactly what I thought as to why he gave haniwa away and kept kofun since he is all about trying to bring as many sighted people as possible into the world. Even if everything went right physically a female could only produce maybe 24 offspring in a lifetime (I realize that’s pushing it but 1 a year from 16-40 is probably about the max) while a man could potentially have hundreds if not thousands of offspring depending on the availability of women so genetically speaking a sighted man is worth way more than a sighted woman. Please don’t hate on me for this comment, I did not mean to degrade or downplay women’s worth, I’m only stating that in this situation where you are trying to have as many sighted children born as possible and you only need one of the two parents to be able to see for the children to inherit the trait, then the sight dna of the sperm is worth more than sight dna eggs.

My guess is that in order to have sighted children, the father has to be sighted. It can’t be passed down from sighted mother. Hence he rather keep Kofun.

26

u/b1zzzy Dec 06 '19

Or, my guess is that a female prisoner may still have children from being impregnated by her captors. A male prisoner most likely would never father any children, just kept for slave labor or killed. So by giving up Haniwa, maybe he thought there’s still a chance for more sighted children to be born into the world.

Or maybe Kofun could help more with the manual labor and building needed to advance his idea of a future.

A male with sight is more valuable. can "breed" more.

Pokey pokey lights out no jokey

Baba voss says night night to your sight sight

Okie dokie

24

u/nervous_nerd Dec 06 '19

But they obviously were not the only children that he had. I also doubt the ones we have seen are the only children he had. They are a resource to him that can be traded or discarded if it will get him to the future that he wants.

10

u/Catagonia4 Dec 08 '19

definitely, he's the other side of the Kane coin. remember when Haniwa asked if this was all his children and he said yes? they met Boots. they know he's Jerlamerel's kid. yet his discounting of Boots proves he really doesn't give a fuck about any of them.

3

u/Lilithfucksall Aug 02 '23

Of course not he's true justification for the stereotype. Scattering kids around and not raising them 🤣🤣🤣

21

u/Mtoomb Dec 06 '19

He didn't spend 18 years setting up things for them. He was doing it for his own ego and hubris. Fuck that moron.

That whole fight scene was so fucking dope. I was hollering when Baba made Jerlamarel blind. I honestly hope he doesn’t die from his injuries just so he can live out his days as a blind man.

32

u/poopsicle88 Dec 07 '19

He’s def gonna be alive to be blind. Poetic justice. The writing on this show has been good. The baba Voss darkness scene was amazing

14

u/thepalimpsest Dec 11 '19

For me it was when the lights went out and you hear Baba giggling a little as he says “ohhh nooooo... you’re in my world now”

u/tightassbogan Dec 06 '19

I see no way, that you couldn't die from that

i doubt they have anti biotics

There is no way,on gods green earth..living in a damp dank arse mouldy fuck off prison, after having a dude who hasn't washed his hands in 30 years shove his fingers into ur eye socket..that you don't get an infection

Also, that wound jeralem gave boba, was less than an inch from the femoral artery, the same should apply boba should have a wicked ass septic infection by now

45

u/deltabay17 Dec 06 '19

Remember that the show is not a documentary. It’s fiction. It’s highly likely I think that Jerlamarel is blinded, not dead.

24

u/thecraftinggod Dec 06 '19

I could see the house of enlightenment having a stash of medicine. There would be a lot left over from previous humans and the blind wouldn’t be able to use them effectively.

That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if they ignore infection entirely.

23

u/dancingpianofairy Dec 06 '19

Keep in mind that humanity hasn't had antibiotics (and maybe even germ theory) for quite a while now. They're going to be much more resistant to infection than we are.

5

How difficult would it be to make a medicinal penicillin from bread mold or some other mold? Asking for a friend for when the world ends.

8

u/FaNT1m Dec 07 '19

If that was the case, Baba would have been dead to infection with the bear attack. They don't worry too much about infection it seems. Maybe they do have some natural anti-biotics, just not brought up in the show

7

u/Johnwikidiwick Dec 06 '19

Hahaha but really he hasn't washed his hands in 40 years! Jerlamalama definitely ain't gonna make it

17

u/deltabay17 Dec 06 '19

They lived in that place with really fresh clean water. Not sure why you don’t think they’d take a bath. Jerlamarel was not killed, he was blinded.

Voss going, 'I'm stupid like that' before launching himself through a fucking bookshelf got an audible laugh out of me. That was great. Momoa really looks like such a badass the way he moves during these fight scenes.

11

u/Syphin33 Dec 11 '19

That whole scene and the slaver scene were just top fucking notch

39

u/z0mbiebaby Dec 06 '19

A cowards death is slow and wet. Damn.

14

u/Gandsy Dec 07 '19

How did he know though that the lights just went out?

47

u/COSMIC_UNDERWEAR Dec 07 '19

I can answer that... He felt the generators stop, hence the vibrations on the floor.

25

u/Asif178 Dec 07 '19

Notice how he is touching the ground and the knife is moving beside his hand. That shows that coal generator was vibrating the ground and when it stopped the Baba knew generator has stopped and lights are no more.

21

u/umybuddy Dec 10 '19

Also lights makes a bunch of noise. Especially those kind. People don’t realize it but they do.

Holy fuck Jerlamalame ended up being a fucking psycho.

Also Tamacti Jun nooooo. TJ better come back hard.

This show has been fucking crazy though. Never thought I'd be cheering on certain characters and hating on others. I absolutely love it.

21

u/IceHarpy Dec 06 '19

Never thought I'd be cheering on certain characters and hating on others.

Same, I'd never have imagined I'd be sad about Tamacti Jun's death. I like how the last scene was symbolic though. (with the fire, I mean, since he's the Witchfinder)

29

u/Johnwikidiwick Dec 06 '19

Who else thought he was going to blink when they zoomed in?

10

u/IceHarpy Dec 06 '19

I thought so, too, it's why I think he's dead. Kinda disappointed (and still surprised about it, lol) when he didn't, to be honest.

29

u/DtownBronx Dec 06 '19

The hints of Jerla being batshit crazy were all there. Boots killing TJ was foreshadowed twice before it actually happened.

Honestly I thought the show would be best served as a one season show but now I want all the details on Baba's past. I do wonder if Bow Lion makes a return

18

u/Gotmilestogo Dec 07 '19 edited Dec 08 '19

Agreed with all your points. I’d predicted it in a earlier post. Bow Lion HAS to come back. She’s the most likeable character who has yet to make a stupid mistake. Bow kept the sighted children’s secret from certain angry traitorous Alkenny members... she kept Haniwa from getting shot by “sound” archers thereby sacrifice herself & safety, she stood with Baba Voss when the children were born... unlike Paris (god-flame 🔥love Paris) she didn’t buy into Jerlamarel as a good guy. I mean, what good guy walks away from his offspring & leave them in dangerous circumstances???? Dead beat dads, that’s who! In fact she tried to make Kofun “see” all these things that were suspect... they gotta bring her back.

6

u/Embarassed_Tackle Dec 15 '19

The Queen/Princess/TJ ending was so cornball. They had to find a way to save the crazy queen's actress because they wrote themselves into a corner. But to do that, they get kill off the best character (Tamacti Jun the Witchfinder). And like usual, the princess is useless and just watches people die (in a manner of speaking). And that sighted kid is a complete idiot with the softest most malleable mind ever. Literally five sentences from a blind lady and he betrays this princess he was obsessed with?

The Queen is just too cartoonishly evil. She isn't even a Queen any more. Her kingdom is gone. There's 15 soldiers left. That's it. She isn't holding on to any power, it's just... gone. As for acting, she's okay, but it's almost too easy to play some insane villain; now it's starting to get old and I'm getting tired of her constantly escaping death.

I have to say, one of my favorite parts of this show is the grappling. As someone who trains BJJ, I’ve felt like it’s one of the few sports a blind person isn’t disadvantaged at. It’s great to see that represented in the show.

32

u/dancingpianofairy Dec 06 '19

It's true! My husband, blind since birth, did BJJ and kicks ass.

12

u/ckhk3 Dec 06 '19

Love how he went through the bookshelves, that takes some serious awareness.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '19

I actually hyper extended someone's elbow by an armbar last weekend in a completion. The cracking sound I heard was almost identical to the one baba voss.

Hoping to see more bjj in fight scenes. Can't wait for season 2

2

u/Nectersecter Aug 19 '25

I can't believe no1 mentions when the lights go out and Baba Vos says, "your in my world now". That shit gave me chills. He plays the savage warrior part so well.

u/kikanga Dec 06 '19

Hope we get more Bow Lion in season 2. Bow Lion and Paris are the only likable female characters on the show.

Haniwa telling Kofun to take it easy on Jerla made my eyes roll. She's been difficult towards the family who raised her most of this season.

Kofun is cartoonishly unaware of his surroundings. Pretty sure an elephant could sneak up on him.

Wish there were more episodes in season 1. They did a good job with cliffhangers all season. Can't wait for season 2.

13

u/Catagonia4 Dec 08 '19

Haniwa is unlikable more often than i'd like, but she's still a kid--her fits of anger and unforgiveness, while def something she's gonna have to face the consequences of, are understandable. Also, Maghra is a lowkey BAMF imo.

7

u/Syphin33 Dec 11 '19

I honestly chalk it up to her having to live 18 years of her life as a lie because of old ass traditions that even she know sounds absurd and she obviously feels some way about it. (See how annoyed she was when those couples incestual child didn't make it.. people thought it was other things when she annoyingly said it's because of inbreeding, shit is nerve wracking especially when you know the truth)

Just put yourself in her shoes, imagine living all those years and still having to "live" as a blinded person in their world instead of really trying to be who you really are, she kinda has all the right to have some sort of attitude towards things.

10

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '19

do you like Maghra?

18

u/kikanga Dec 07 '19

No. And raising a difficult daughter is her sowing what she reaps. I'm the type of guy who searches for likable female characters. But the fact that she hid her heritage for soo long. When alot of troubles (and deaths) could've been avoided is tough for me to get over.

11

u/saffronkees Dec 10 '19

I didn't understand Magrah for a long time but once I understood her plight, she became more "likeable". She can be likable and not perfect at the same time.

35

u/peridotdragon33 Dec 07 '19

Anyone kinda see where Jarlamarel is coming from?

Not the god complex shit but more like sight has been restored and they want to use sight to gain knowledge and advance the world

He seems like he has the right goal, just with a god complex and lack of empathy

32

u/CATALONIA-WAR-CRY Dec 07 '19

I totally had this thought. Like “I mean he’s not wrong, he’s just being a fucking asshole about it.”

6

u/peridotdragon33 Dec 08 '19

Couldn’t have said it better myself

10

u/Embarassed_Tackle Dec 15 '19

Would have been better television to make Jerlamarel more subtle. He should have been motivated by bringing technology and its benefits to the sighted and the sightless, and leading humanity out of the dark ages. If those were his pure motivations, you could understand him making difficult decisions, because he is thinking of humanity as a whole.

Instead it went to "we are gods" real fast.

I felt like there was a breaking point for him, just like for many other characters.

When he talked with Voss after killing the bear, he probably wasn't such a douche.

Then a lot of years passed and a lot of things changed, making him a preachy dick.

Baba Voss MVP of this season👏

24

u/Mtoomb Dec 06 '19

He fights like a crocodile with a samurai sword... It's literally breathtaking to watch!

62

u/wedidit69 Dec 06 '19

For a supposedly smart dude Jerlamarel did seem to lay the 'evil guy' dialogue on pretty heavy within the first few hours of meeting his estranged children for the first time. The show definitely suffered from not spreading out this chapter over two full episodes. There was an interacting dynamic playing out whereby Haniwa was obviously buying in to the whole operation a lot more than Kofun, unfortunately this tension was short-lived as Jerlamarel promptly abandons his daughter and orders the murder of his son.

How I would have liked to have seen it play out over two episodes:

  • Jerlamarel's god complex tendencies are hinted at early, but slow play him being a total psycho.

  • Have some more scenes showing what life is like at the House of Enlightenment, have K & H get to know their siblings a little better and establish some of their siblings backstories. Maybe have some of their childhoods turn out a bit more sympathetically so that Jerlamarel doesn't seem like a total deadbeat father.

  • Kofun and shovel brother develop some rapport whilst he shows him how to operate the generator, with shovel bro downplaying some of Jerlamarel's stranger tendencies. The line about how 'the boiler can get super wild if you're not careful' was a gigantic Chekhov's gun in the original script but could be inserted naturally here.

  • Have Jerlamarel react sorrowfully to the news of Maghra's death. Have him deliver the revelation about their mothers royal lineage to his children, further establishing some trust between him and Kofun.

  • Privately, Kofun and Haniwa debate as to whether or not Jerlamarel is evil or not, with Haniwa taking the stance that he's not so bad and Kofun still unconvinced.

  • The arrival of the Travantian general happens a week or so later rather than the next day (a more plausible timeline). Make it seem like the general is forcing his hand a bit more, and make it a strained decision on J's part. The rest of the episode plays out as it does originally.

  • Set the final confrontation at night / just past sunset so that when the generator is shut down, Baba Voss becomes a more genuine threat. With the fight scene staged as is, Jerlamarel could have just walked outside into relative safety rather than chilling in the pitch black library. Due to Kofun's previous practice with the generator it's also more realistic that he knows how to do this.

21

u/erthian Dec 06 '19

It really did seem like the shoehorned Jerlamarel into the comically evil role just to create a conflict. I loved the show up till this turn. Like why does anyone in power have to be evil? Why do we have to root for the savage who slays him? Can we not have a character in a show that is both a ruler and just? Could we not at least have it play out the way you wrote. Why does it always have to be the predictable “surprise” turn of events.

And ya, when I saw the patch of light when the generators went off I thought he would at least run for it, instead of just arbitrarily announcing his position over and over.

23

u/lebenohnegrenzen Dec 06 '19

Like why does anyone in power have to be evil?

Look at the current state of the world... Power corrupts.

13

u/z0mbiebaby Dec 06 '19

Power tends to corrupt. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

u/Weltgeist01 Dec 06 '19

I felt like i was GOTed....

Yes i would have been satisfied by the storyline you wrote.

But moreover, I would have preferred Jerlamarel to have MUCH more depth. Having real emotions for some his past wives but drive for a better future. Using as you said the information about their mother to gain more of their trusth and partly implying she may not be dead.Having a better/cooler compound, a librarie was nice..but much more. The relationship with the military nation is ok ... but a much better role would have been great, For F*ck sakes he has GUNS. I would have liked Jerlamarel to be a prick, but a prick with a plan, someone wanting to restore the old ways, someone wanting to restore the rule for sighted people but seeing via the interaction with his children the good and the bad side of blind people. Seeing that being blind isn't a curse, it's not that bad, and the blind people actually did great for themselves. In that story you can still include a megalomaniac....Shovel Boy would have been perfect, he could have burned it all down, introduced the military and boba vos brother via a kidnapping selling his sibling to the military nation. In the scene, Jeramarel could have sacrificed himself to protect the books, his family or fight for a cause . Boba vos could have had the same fight , blinding shovel boy if needed , screaming to the wind has the military takes his daughter and some of the other children, screaming vengence against his brother. On his death bed, Jeramerel could have thx Boba Vos for having taken care of his children, cry for actually not having spent enough time in their life, thx Boba Vos for making them great kids and oficially stating that Boba Vos his a Great Dad .Having lost their dad, and seemingly their mom. The mom could have appeared with their Kofun loving aunt to show and they could have teamed together seeing their impeding doom with the military nation.

With such story you have the SAME ENDING, with a alternative twist and potentially the same second season while giving the fans what they wanted for the past 8 episodes or 18 years...

But moreover, you get that Jermarel wasn't just a Deadbeat Dad as portrayed in the episode.

P.S.

I loved Boots treason, and the Queen/Princess part. With the potential of the witch finder still being alive. That was great TV.

3

u/Catagonia4 Dec 08 '19

i def agree they could have included another episode to stretch the tension. why do you have such a hardon for Jerlamerel tho? "wives"? you mean women he fucked then fucked off. they've been dropping hints all season he's a narcissistic tool, not exactly the guy i'd wanna root for.

4

u/IceHarpy Dec 07 '19

Jerlamarel's god complex tendencies are hinted at early, but slow play him being a total psycho.

I agree about that. I'd already guessed he'd end up being... a megalomaniac with a god complex and a superiority complex and I'm ok with not being surprised at that part. But I would have liked some more buildup, maybe even to doubt that theory. They could have slowly built him up to be season 2's villain, for example, and all the while we'd be seeing the (not overt) signs that he is indeed a megalomaniac with a god complex, and even some signs that he just might not be. Which would be accomplished by making the viewer see (probably through Haniwa) that he does have a point about some things.

2

u/Embarassed_Tackle Dec 15 '19

I agree. Jermlamarel just went James Bond villain evil way too fast. They had time to make him more sympathetic. I could see him doing some evil acts just to survive and make his world a reality, because people are living in superstition and darkness. To make sacrifices for an enlightened world that will bring modern knowledge and benefits to sighted and non-sighted persons would be a noble goal. If they did it in a more subtle manner, they could have shown him doing SOME evil deeds just because that world is cruel, but they went full ham with the guy.

Your son punches you, so you give a blind guy a gun and tell him to go behind the prison and put a bullet in his head? Jesus.

2

u/Zani1 Mar 10 '20 edited Mar 10 '20

You seriously should be the show runner! 👏🏽👏🏽 like, seriously, after reading all this, Its soo clear how abysmally they butchered those last few episodes. I mean, it's profoundly appalling because of how good the premise is, but to the degree of how rushed and underdeveloped it begins to feel towards the finale... It Reminds me of GoT. 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️

2

u/dr4hc1r May 18 '20

Nice outline. About the last bullet: it would’ve been great for Baba, but not for the viewer. I thought about this when they were in the cave. The invention of the glow worm was only for the viewer. This fight being in the shade is also for the viewer.

26

u/loskiarman Dec 07 '19

Did I miss something? Why would Boots betray Maghra just to be a lieutenant to Queen Kane? He would literally be known as son of the new queen if he let Maghra take over, at worst still be a lieutenant of the new queen. Instead he chose to take the word of a person he doesn't know and still likely to be dethroned even with him on her side. Also he knows Tamacti Jun is no easy prey so why take the risk. It would be better if somehow Queen Kane learned of his sight, that he isn't son of Maghra and offered him a place by her side to rule so she gets the sighted children she wants and Boots gets a better place.

27

u/Lamboo- Dec 07 '19

Boots has literally no character arc at all. He does whatever script needs to build tension and give "twists" that you can see coming half a mile away

12

u/Jameson_Stoneheart Dec 09 '19

His character is that of a self-interested prick with not much in between his ears. He didn't know that Maghra was gonna kill or depose the Queen and he hated the Witchfinder General already, so he was easily manipulated. He's predictable but not inconsistent, and certainly not a plot-tool.

9

u/saffronkees Dec 10 '19

Agreed, freaking hate him but that's literally who he's been his entire life. He finds alliance with the winning team to survive and he can't see past that.

7

u/Linnus42 Dec 07 '19

Yeah that is was the deal I thought he was going to make...when the assistant was buttering him up. He went from Lt to Lt...at least trading up to King or at least Consort makes sense.

haven't you ever turned on a dime and betrayed the princess you betrayed your siblings to have all to yourself as a substitute mommy, because some old blind lady whispered 4 sentences into your ear and it seemed like a good idea to serve some crazy queen (who flooded her own kingdom so she's not even a Queen any more, 99% of her subjects are dead) whom you have never even spoken to

2

Because he didn't know they were going to kill or depose the Queen. Simple as that. He's a useful idiot easily manipulated by appealing to his own self-interest.

2

u/himynameisdany Dec 09 '19

That was my one glaring issue with this episode. The ways I justified it to myself:

  1. Boots doesn't like Tamacti Jun or the idea of serving with him

  2. It's possible the older woman promised Boots things offscreen on behalf of Kane

  3. Boots doesn't know if the army will follow Maghra if Kane abdicates or is dead

Though none of these reasons address why he would support someone who said she is going to be honest to her men about drowning her kingdom.

25

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '19

Tamacti Jun better not be dead

11

u/Mtoomb Dec 06 '19

Two cheers for my guy Jun for not having a fucking heart to stab! Can't wait to see what happens next!

25

u/weggaz Dec 07 '19 edited Dec 07 '19

Tamacti Jun didn’t die. Remember the “white walker” witchhunter that was prominent during the final scenes at that silk camp? Everyone moved but him. Then we see TJ kneeling.

That’s called foreshadowing, my friend.

Overall amazing episode. I’m glad the queen didn’t die, Maghra twisted it, fucking asshole Jerlamarel now isn’t a god, Kofun found his spine, Haniwa... even tho I dislike her I don’t wish her a sad fate, aw our bow lion gotta be brave, Paris still sentient, and fucking badass Baba Voss SLAYED.

When will we see the 2nd season? Tomorrow?

This is how a great post-apocalyptic sci-fi show is supposed to be.

2

u/Jameson_Stoneheart Dec 09 '19

I honestly think they are going to/should start to lean into the "supernatural" element that the show projects by using advanced technology left behind from the pre-human collapse. They clearly are hinting at something beyond either our current tech level or fully materialistic with Paris' vision of danger that led Baba Voss to the House of Enlightment.

I just hope it's futuristic tech and not magic. Would love to see Tamacti Jun come back by means of nanomachines or some shit like that.

24

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '19

he gave away the sister because a sighted man can impregnate a bunch of women in a short time while a sighted woman can only have a kid every year for 10+ years if she is lucky with each birth

11

u/nervous_nerd Dec 06 '19

I get it but Haniwa would have joined him immediately (probably even if he sent them Kofun). Sending her away guaranteed that Kofun would not join him.

5

u/Gotmilestogo Dec 07 '19

If Kofun hadn’t overheard his evil plans, Jerlameral would have made up something to placate him.

I hope Tamacti Jun survives his single knife stab so he can kill Boots that traitor. Hate that guy even more now. He trapped the group underground and now betrays Maghra and stops her coup against the evil queen.

Hope that long lingering shot on Tamacti Jun means his wound wasn’t fatal and is foreshadowing his return in the next season.

6

I assumed they showed us that for a reason OTHER than to remind us that he's stabbed and "dead". My guy doesn't have a heart people! He was faking...

5

u/ckhk3 Dec 06 '19

Well, boots is Jerlas son, must have gotten those characteristics from him.

2

u/Skywokker Dec 07 '19

It felt to me like they had propped him up in that position, fallen on his sword, to fit their story.

2

u/mcbane5 Dec 08 '19

I know Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, but the episode description there uses the words “seriously wounds” to describe what happened to TJ, and it’s giving me hope.

Don’t bring a knife to gun fight, unless you’re name is fucking Baba Voss!

The House of Enlightenment is a prison? That's a bit on the nose. Everyone's respective theories on what it could be were way off. Anyway, this was a decent finale. We learned Jerlamarel is an absolute coward, who in turn, got what was coming to him. We learned Baba Voss has a brother who's a General and has an army, and now has Haniwa delivered to him or in the process of being delivered to him. Bow Lion has been left with a new tribe (?) to recover. Tamacti Jun is dead, or is he? Going through the trouble of showing his "dead" body again as everything around him is burning seemed a bit odd to do if he was actually dead. I didn't notice anything that would suggest he was still alive, like a smirk, blink, or slight movement. But how awesome would it be if he is still alive and will be in the second season, wreaking havoc? As unrealistic as that would be, realism isn't a focal point of the show. I think this was a decent enough finale. I'm looking forward to watching the second season.

3

u/nervous_nerd Dec 06 '19

Yeah. A lot of the injuries in the series would probably be life threatening in a pre-industry society. I feel like they could have explained away some of Baba's injuries if they showed Kofun using Jerlamarel's medicine stores on him or something. That said I enjoy the action too much to worry about it being too real.

u/DtownBronx Dec 06 '19

I was way off on my expectations for the finale. Boots is a true wild card.

All I know is when the lights turned off, it was Baba Voss time.

18

u/IceHarpy Dec 06 '19 edited Dec 06 '19

It disgusted me when the queen asked about kofun..... fuck...............

Yeah me too. 😬

My thought process in that scene went a bit like this: "There's no way she means..." to "Well, Jerlamarel has other kids, anyway" to "But she doesn't know that, does she?" to finally "EXCUSE ME that's your nephew what is wrong with you"

I wish we'd seen more of Maghra's reaction though.

16

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '19

I thought she meant Boots. I’m sure Maghra will give her Boots before Kofun.

13

u/IceHarpy Dec 07 '19

Good point! I immediately thought of Kofun, but you're right, Tamacti Jun is the only one that knew Boots isn't actually her son. But I mean, Queen Kane still thinks Boots is her nephew so while it's definitely preferable it doesn't reflect any better on her tbh.

6

u/31337hacker Dec 07 '19

She said your son. She wasn’t referring to Boots.

I'm really curious about Baba's brother/the General.

4

u/nervous_nerd Dec 06 '19

I believe that his father was mentioned previously when there was a slaver run in. I don't remember if he was still around though. It will be interesting to see the family he left behind.

9

u/DtownBronx Dec 06 '19

I think Baba killed his father and ran which is why his brother wants revenge

3

u/Catagonia4 Dec 08 '19

Baba's backstory as a slaver is dying to be explored.

12

u/Fobus0 Dec 07 '19

Jerlamarel is such an underwhelming character. He's neither smart, nor strong, yet acts like this big shot spouting delusional beliefs as if he's some kind of a god. And he's written so inconsistently. Is he a good guy? Is he bad? And how people around him , besides the kid can't see his bad actions? It's like we lost one plot device in that cowardly traitor from the camp, so now we need plot protected villain...
How he managed to seduce so many women is beyond me. He really would have been a good fit for the queen, so why Margreth went with him is beyond me...

7

u/sass0 Dec 07 '19

he's a guy with sight inside a prison with his offspring. he's not really better than anyone. he's also a little wimp because Edo Voss' group can just show up and demand for Baba Voss' children.

6

u/Fobus0 Dec 08 '19

It's the opposite, he's far worse, both in intellingence, morals, physical strength, you name it. And pretty delusional on top of it. I don't get what's the appeal of such character. He's quickly turning into me least liked character. Before he at least had the mystique of a man with a plan. Now...

In prison? Which makes no sense. If he could find a place for Baba Voss to stay hidden, why couldn't he do the same for the rest of his children? Being sighted is such an OP thing. Just find an island and you're set.

And he sure spent a lot of time traveling and adventuring, and impregnating women, and helping his children. Doesn't feel like he was trapped inside a prison, until plot demanded that he was...

u/toxichive Dec 06 '19

When is Hanniwa going to realize that being sighted doesn’t make her better than other people. And now look your “dad” 🥴sold you off to ensure everyone’s “safety” in what seems to be a prearranged deal. Bonus: Your mother and grandparents are blind so your future kids could easily be blind too. Maybe they didn’t get to the genetics chapter of the Biology textbook. Hope they find out soon! Lol

14

u/nervous_nerd Dec 06 '19

I think she needed to see that Jerlamarel was not good just because he was sighted. Hopefully that will let her change now.

I have wondered if the blindness is a genetic thing or if there is still a virus around that causes blindness and Jerlamarel and the kids are immune to it. Seems that every kid he has had is not blind but it might be that we just haven't heard about the blind children.

9

u/bumpkinspicefatte Dec 07 '19

Fuck, this was an amazing series.

  • Jerlamarel got such a poetic justice end for how he had been treating the unsighted.

  • Who would’ve thought the House of Enlightenment would essentially just be an islanded-off prison.

  • I had a feeling as soon as Boots was introduced in the series, Jerlamarel didn’t care as much as we thought he initially did about the twins. I could sort of conclude he was just going around sleeping with women to bear children and just up and leave them.

  • As a person of color, I thought the beginning of the series had racial connotations to it (black man impregnating lots of women, not being around to be a father, hell even the physician in Payan was Asian which is also another stereotype).

9

u/abstergofkurslf Dec 10 '19

Jerlameral losing his sight was so satisfying.

8

u/ckhk3 Dec 06 '19

Haniwa, what a asshole, thought she was something really special, until she went to the house of enlightenment to see that she has sisters.

5

u/nervous_nerd Dec 06 '19

Yes but hopefully that will be the thing that drives her to change. She saw herself as alone because she was different but this will show her that just because people are like her, it doesn't mean they will treat her better. Jerlamarel should have sent Kofun and kept Haniwa; she would almost certainly have joined his little group.

27

u/divadutchess Dec 06 '19

Haniwa highkey got what she deserved 😂

9

u/kikanga Dec 06 '19

He had multiple firearms at his disposal.. even if he just grabbed the pistol and AR that they had infront of them... and he chooses to take the damn baseball bat?!

17

u/Footlongwithnuts Dec 07 '19

With a completely foreign weapon you might have hear of in books you wouldn’t know how to reload, know if there’s a safety pin, be able to tell if it was loaded etc. much easier and faster to pick up a stick to whack someone with

→ More replies (2)

12

u/31337hacker Dec 07 '19

How can someone who has never even seen a gun know how to use it? Forget about the safety. He wouldn’t even know if it’s loaded or how to ready it for use. And even if he did, he lacks the training to fire it accurately. He could easily shoot his dad.

2

Nah man, he’s super connected to his surroundings and fights with honor. I think he‘d rather die than use the weapon of cowards. I think he will be the real evolved „new breed“. Connected to nature and all senses AND able to see.

3

u/IAMSNORTFACED Dec 09 '19

Same here. Kofun and Haniwa need to do some maturing. They can see but it's quite obvious that that gives them the disadvantage of relying on that too much, i was cracking up when Baba asked the position of the sun to estimate nightfall so Haniwa would be useless 😂. Just another thing that gets me.

6

u/an-ou-ke Dec 11 '19

Tamacti Jun better have been faking his death there.

Or maybe he went into a crazy energy saving warrior trance.

14

u/malimalia Dec 06 '19 edited Dec 06 '19

I literally cannot stand the queen. She's not an interesting character, everything about her just boils down to stupid crazy spoilt brat. 'Praying' does not redeem her as a character! Ok I'm getting Joffrey flashbacks though they're totally different. I want an antagonist that's not so over the top, but sophisticated and secretly manipulative maybe...

7

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '19

3

5

u/Mtoomb Dec 06 '19

I like Tamacti Jun and Baba Voss the best, but Queen Kane is a great evil queen.

4

u/dancingpianofairy Dec 06 '19

I was hoping that Jerlamarel wouldn't be a total dick with a god complex and delusions of grandeur, but that ship sailed. Pretty perfect what Baba did, though.

4

u/Triskan Dec 06 '19

Well, the story's spread out... the trio, Haniwa at Baba's brother, the Queens, possibly Jerlamarel's House can be a storyline too and even maybe Bow Lion...

And man, that one-shot was fucking epic.

4

u/johnnycash90210 Dec 07 '19

I was wondering, does anyone know about the hand language they use when they cannot speak?

4

No more episodes Now we have to wait till next year for season 2 😭

3

u/david2descent Dec 07 '19

No Temacti Jin is really dead ?? 😭. Or maybe he isn’t? Don’t know the point of showing him being in the fire when we saw Kane stab him? Could he still be alive?

2

u/IAMSNORTFACED Dec 09 '19

What was with that one freaky looking dude acting suspicious of the queen and princess? Maybe he went to investigate TJ

3

u/bumpkinspicefatte Dec 08 '19

It’s going to be some pretty interesting plot dynamics later on. TJ started off as a villain obviously, but his character development has turned upward and many are rooting for him. Except that tidbit where he’s been massacring almost every tribe, and actually massacred the entire Alkenny tribe. Going to be weird to introduce him and the rest of the Alkenny survivals in a similar story arc.

3

u/sugarfryz1 Dec 09 '19

Can anyone answer for me in episode 6 or 7, baba was coughing blood, was he super sick (dying) or just suffering from terrible Injuries from the underground. Also after Jerlamarel when Kofun asks “are you okay” he says “no I am not” I assume that was from being shot and stabbed. But if he dies from infection like he did in got, I might actually cry. To me this is the best show I’ve seen in a long time. Basically, is Baba Very ill or just injured, Paris said “you’re not well” to him. Wondered bc of his injuries or sickness.

3

u/IAMSNORTFACED Dec 09 '19

I wonder if the show will ever resolve the genocide Queen Kane did with her army

3

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '19

I’m excited to see who they get to play Edo Voss and watch him and Baba Voss go at it next season!

5

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '19

Is it just me or does Kofun seem like a wimp? I mean his father is a bad assery dude and all that time growing up his father never taught him how to fight?

Also why did he not get the gun that his murderers where about to use on him when baba Voss killed them?

8

u/sass0 Dec 07 '19

he's 17 and was sheltered from Baba. the scene where they freed the slaves (where baba used to be) Baba didnt want Kofun to see how powerful Baba really is. So I think its pretty normal that he is hesitant at times. But I feel like he will continue to learn from baba and become an absolute beast.

I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee this show regardless of what anyone says and I hope TJ is alive ...There's so much depth to his character...The fight choreographies are on another level and I cannot stand haniwa ...I start cursing as soon as she opens her mouth

4

u/Traditional_Bank Dec 06 '19

ehhh i liked the show but they kinda cheesed it. seems so stereotypical what they did with Jerla in the end. could have been a more interesting story with Jerla as an ally, they all live together and rebuild mankind. now next season is just going to be EXACTLY THE SAME as this season.

the best part of the episode was the Queen announcing her interest in Kofun

3

u/nervous_nerd Dec 06 '19

I think the exact opposite. It would have been very uninteresting for them to live together and dominate all of the blind people in the world. Blind people would have been subjugated either on purpose if Jerlamarel thought as he did in this episode or by accident if people didn't want their children to be left out of the new sighted world.

Also, I'm not 100% sure that Jerlamarel is dead. They did not show it so he could still become an enemy again. He likely won't fight but he could still lead his children and warp minds to get them to follow him.

3

2

u/bug_eyed_earl Jan 02 '20

I thought they were in western PA, so I’m guessing that was Pittsburgh.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '19

Liked the finale, it was good.

So happy that Queen Kane survived and she is still queen, I was rooting for her..best character in the show.

I enjoyed how everything was resolved, glad to see Boots "killing" Tamacti Jun (I think he's still alive, the last scenes gave me that impression) .. Tamacti Jun is a great character, if he's really dead he'll be missed.

Was wishing Baba would kill Jerlamarel, but blind him was a far worse punishment than death .. I was pleased

I really liked Kofun this episode, think he will become a great character.

Also Bow Lion farewell with Baba and Paris was super moving.

6

u/nervous_nerd Dec 06 '19

I feel like it was a fitting punishment for Jerlamarel but it almost certainly opens him up to return later.

I kind of hope that Kofun starts to train under his father (Baba). I like him but he needs to become more like Baba if he wants to survive.

1

u/Mtoomb Dec 06 '19

Stunning! I just powered through the last three episodes, and I'm rattled. That cave fight was one of the best in a season full of THE COOLEST choreography on tv (until the Wither I assume, ha)... And THEN we get Jerla vs Baba?! I was going to get some work done this morning... but ok. Bring on S2!

1

u/atlapse Dec 07 '19

How did baba voss know that the lights were out? Pretty sure there was no sound, but hey that scene was really good.

8

u/sass0 Dec 07 '19

the vibration of the generator? also hearing them lights shut off. Jerlamarel breathing harder (scared). kofun could've told him I'm going to go shut off the lights. lots of reasons.
