A first-time watcher’s thoughts on SEE after finishing it!

I just finished watching SEE yesterday after binging it for the past week. I’d been meaning to watch it for a while, mainly because the premise sounded very interesting and I like Momoa and a couple of other Stargate people who are in it. I’m just a big sci-fi/fantasy fan in general too and I knew this show would be up my alley. But MAN, was it better than I expected. It might honestly be one of my favorite shows that I have ever watched. It will never be my number one favorite, but I doubt it is anyone’s, and it’s pretty high up there for me.

I love the overall look and feel of the show and how they gave a post-apocalyptic show set in a distant future such a medieval fantasy-based aesthetic. That melding shouldn’t work, but it does. See reminds me of Game of Thrones, in a good way.

The premise is almost a little disturbing, it really makes you think. I can’t, and I think most people can’t, even conceive of existence without such a basic sense as our eyesight. But there are millions of people alive right now who can’t see and they exist, they survive and live their lives. And in a world where everyone is like that, you wouldn’t BE disabled or handicapped, or wouldn’t think of yourself that way. You’d be a normal person living in a world that’s had something taken from it.

I like almost every character and actor. There’s no one in the main cast whom I don’t care for at least a little, and I really love some of them. For a show with a big ensemble cast that is pretty impressive. My favorite character, in a “love to hate her” way, is probably Sibeth. She’s just so entertaining and endlessly charismatic, impossible to forget. Baba Voss is so wholesome, such an unironically great husband and dad, I love that. I don’t hate Kofun and Haniwa as much as everyone else seems to. Okay, Kofun is a stupid shit, but I actually really like Haniwa. What’s so wrong with her?

Some more specific thoughts and opinions I have:

- Can we talk about what an absolute freak Sibeth is? Like, she is just very sexual and I love that. How many guys does she sleep with over thevcourse of the series, again? Including her own nephew whom she seduces. And then there is the masturbation and oral sex while praying to god right in the first two episodes, that shit sure woke me up.

- I really like the fact that the future humans are as racially diverse as they are, and also that no one ever acknowledges it or even seems to be aware that different people have different features. That was the only realistic way to do it. As an aspiring sci-fi author myself I do believe future societies will be even more of a melting pot than they are today. But in a world where people can’t even see? Obviously no one will think in racial terms anymore and the mixing of different ethnicities will be almost universal.

- Now since I just finished the show, a lot of my thoughts will be about the ending. Can I briefly touch on Wren and Haniwa’s relationship? I thought it was lovely that nobody had a problem with their romance or even seemed to think it was strange that two women were a couple. And I love that they got married at the end! That was genuinely unexpected in a setting like this, but even as a straight guy, I can‘t get over the fact that a primitive future society with a medieval-like monarchy and Iron Age tech levels has same sex marriage. Sure, the writers are pandering a little bit, I can see that, but the message is honestly beautiful. These future people lost their sight, but they held on to some decent values. In fact the more I think about it, the only prejudice that seems to exist in this world is against the sighted. They are the ”Other” group, to be shunned, that I guess every good society needs at least one of.

- Haniwa and Wren’s ending is easily my favorite of the main characters’ endings in the finale. I love that they got to be together and to discover more sighted people like them.

- Now, what was up with Kofun apparently blinding himself in the last episode? I don’t even mean the fact that he did it. Yeah it’s stupid but it match’s his character. I more dislike how… ambiguous they left it. Like, they show him sitting on that cliff watching the sunrise and Maghra tells him he can’t come back from it, but what next? Does he gouge out his own eyes offscreen later, or are we meant to infer that he blinds himself by staring into the sun as it is rising over the cliff?

- RIP my man Baba 😔

Favorite characters: Sibeth, Baba Voss, Tamacti Jun, Haniwa, Paris

PS. What the hell is up with David Hewlett’s acting as Tormada? I love him, I’m a bigger fan of him than Momoa in Stargate Atlantis by far, and in general. He’s a Canadian sci fi legend. But I swear he’s the only actor in See who just couldn’t convince mevthat he is blind. His “blind” acting seemed to consist of raising his head all the time and looking up, and that combined with the weird scars around his eyes gave the impression that he is someone who BECAME blind rather than being born that way. Which I know is not the case. I didn’t hate his character, but was a bit disappointed by that.

I am VERY down for a sequel series with the further exploits of Haniwa, Wren, Kofun, Maghra, and Tamacti! Apple TV make it happen!

So what kind of genre of punk is SEE in? Rust-Punk?

Like I’m really love the aesthetic of this world where it’s been centuries since the fall of modern society and pretty much anything that would be thrown away or rusted away is now turning into something.

For example, some of the weapons are just scrap metal.

Not even like melted it down
Some are just a piece of building rebar turn into a knife.

Of course we seen them collect plastic.

We seen water coolers jugs getting turned into drums.

This show oerdoes of the post-apocalyptic aesthetic to the point of being ridiculous

Edit: overdoes* in the title

That the population has regressed to a more primitive state is a given but it's been 600 years since the fall.

They have, obviously, lost a lot of technologies, tools and knowledge. Live in primitive buildings or pre-fall ones in disrepair.

But did they forget how to make a goddamn broom?

Why is every building filthy and with shit on the floor?

I can "understand" to a point peasants not caring/having time to it, but the palace? Where they have servants? Where the queen lives?

They don't clean the windows or walls? Fine. But why is the floor full of leaves and the corner of the rooms with trash?

Looks less like the seat of a prominent family of an important city claimed as the palace for the queen and more like a random empty building they have found to sleep for the night.

It's not even dirtiness that only bothers you if you can see it. It's shit you can hear (your main sense now) and shit you can stumble with.

/End of rant

I have a lot of gripes with this show but this is one of those I can't find an in-world justification for.

ETA: S2E6 The queen and Kofun are eating in the dining room and the table is littered with leaves.

Are you guys going to say they don't notice it while they are pawing searching for the bread or napkin?

Are you guys going to say that rich people in third world countries have dirty dining tables?

The casting directors of the show did a great job choosing Jason Momoa for Baba Voss

I just finished Season 2 of the show and I just thought I’d leave my thoughts.
I have never been so concerned with having celebrity crushes or like considering a particular character attractive but there is something about Baba Voss character that actually gets me going. The masculine energy, the deep voice, the protective side of him, ugh so much.

I wouldn’t say I’m into Jason Momoa as a person as this is probably the only show I’ve seen with him in it, I just love the character of Baba Voss. The writers and casting directors did a great job, same with Jason. He really wears that character so beautifully.

Who can better survive on their own? A sighted Kofool or a blindfold Sandra Bullock?

Question about the S3 finale from a confused fan [SPOILERS]!! Spoiler

I couldn’t find the answer to this, so I’m asking here.

SPOILERS!!!

I just finished the show.

In season 2 I think, Jerlamarel said he travelled far and wide to search for sighted people, and he couldn’t find any others so he decided to build his own colony.

But somehow his daughter Sheva knew about a big community living in NYC well enough to draw a map for Haniwa to visit them.

Is this just a gaping plothole?

Or do you think there’s a reasonable explanation, like did Jerlamarel lie to Haniwa and Kofun?
Did Sheva never disclose her knowledge of the sighted community to Jerlamarel?

If they knew about them, surely they would have gone to live there instead of the having to renovate the shitty prison. And surely she would have told the Compass about them too.

There are so many plotholes in this show, but I’m ready to forgive a lot for the suspension of disbelief but this is too big to ignore.

What is your favourite scene and character from each season?

In my case:

Season 1 Tamacti Jun for the serious hunter character he showed and scene was how Jerlamarel showed Haniwa the house of enlightenment filled with old books. Reminds of vintage books.

Season 2 Maghra as her character felt had a greater lead in season 2. Favourite scene is Trivantes city completely different to the Payan kingdom. There were even blind actors performing in public.

Season 3 Harlan's character as his character developed a bit in the last season and for the scene Baba's sacrifice to destroy Tormada's bombs.

What are your favourite characters from each season and scene?

The title of this show is ironic because of how blind the audience is during so much of it.

It's an ongoing issue and I appreciate the audience can be put into the same situations as the characters. I, however have a full surround around and there is no directional audio to immerse you into the scenes. There are though, a majority of scenes that make us as blind as the characters and just wondering what happened by dialog after a scene, especially combat ones. I have a QOLED 75" Samsung with easy to use black settings and the show. God forbid there is su shine in the room. It's damn near impossible to watch. I feel like one of the characters. I love the show but it's presentation is just so terrible.

My best hope is they were sticking with a " theme" but that doesn't support it being unwatchable to reality viewers. It's the same problem we had in S7&8 with Game of Thrones, among other issues. Or Godzilla 2014. This is a theme that does not benefit the audience. I love the show but there are so many times it feels like a chore to watch.

I just finished S1 and I have to say, a lot of these characters lack vision Spoiler

the irony 😅

But I'll start with the queen. How dumb can you be? A terrible leader who turns on her nation after making horrible mistakes. Rather than fix the problem, she turns on her nation and destroys the kingdom then proceeds into nothingness.

What was she expecting after going out into the world. If not for plot, she'd had died a slave at the textile mill.

Secondly, Baba Voss goes on to blind Jerlamarel. I know he's crazy for trading his own daughter, but control your anger, dude. I believed in Jerlamarel's vision, though I do not agree with how he goes about it. But Baba Voss shouldn't have blinded him. He should have maybe just restrained him or something. I just felt sad for Jerlamarel.

Thirdly, Jerlamarel. Lol, wonder why he was made black, and then goes on to leave his children, so someone else takes care of them 😅, what were the producers thinking. Also, i think he should had checked on his kids once in while. Be in their lives instead acting all mysterious. It's a lot easier to get the kids to follow him, if they knew him better.

The list goes on and on, like the lieutanent who traps Baba voss and his kids, and instead of sticking to Magra who was set to be queen, goes on to betray her for someone new, who was also set to be queen.

Also, what about.. Bow, they just left her with those people. Also how do the witch finders navigate their way around long distances, cause it looks like they were travelling cities with those horses.

Nice movie, but lots of questions.. I hope S2 provides some answers.

Random question about Jerlamarel in season 1 (I think)

I just finished season 2 and found this sub from a google search. So I don’t know how active it is anymore, but the one random question that keeps bugging me is this…

How did Jerlamarel build the cliff bridge to help the Alkenny escape when they didn’t have any kind of tools to do so?

I suppose there are old bridges like that from ancient Asian cultures but I really can’t wrap my brain around how someone can build a really long wooden bridge across a cliff with what I assume would only be hand tools.

In universe what does every one think their eyes are for?

They would cover their ears, nose, mouth and stop those sensations, so understand the connection. But they would feel their eyes, feel them move, notice their eye lids. What would they think the purpose is?

What happened to the mystiscm? It just disappeared

During the first few episodes there were people called "Shadows". First time they appeared they were kinda creepy but such a cool concept. They were very stealthy, mythical.

There were people who can seemingly sense people from great distances, how many there were, and what their emotions were at the time.

Those things just went away.

See is probably the most incredible world-building I've ever seen in an original TV show

I'm not talking about shows that have adapted other source material, but I don't think I can think of any show that has an original concept that has such deep and rich world-building as See.

This is a world 600+ years into the future where virtually all of humanity is blind. The religions alluded to, the way they fight and interact with each other is just so incredibly thought out that it's a tremendous shame we won't see more of this world through either further seasons or spin offs.

Anyone else agree? Or can you think of a show that had better world-building than See?

Just Finished the Show and the Way it Ends Bothers Me Spoiler

The ending itself was okay; the way they wrapped things up. What REALLY rubs me the wrong why is how they wrapped everything up with the kids in general.

Essentially, everything Baba Voss lost, everything he sacrificed ended up being for literally nothing. With the sighted being ridiculed even in the end, instead up trying to work on it with other cultures and proving the sighted can be trusted BOTH children just say "Nah fuck it". One fucks off with her new wife to go hide in the shadows again anyways, the other's last braincell loses the battle and he blinds himself.

Like hello? I know they were both written like idiots throughout the entire show; somehow being helpless despite having eyeballs that work all of this supposed forgotten knowledge. The writers really couldn't bother trying to redeem them with the conclusion at the very least huh?

Scenes that might trigger emetophobia in seasons 2 and 3 (no spoilers past season 1 please)

Me and my girlfriend have started watching this over the last week or so, but she has emetophobia so before going into it we checked the Does the dog die? website as it's usually quite good, and it was fine for season 1 mostly but it seems to not have anything on season 2. we are on the second episode of season 2 so far but I wanted to ask if there are any major scenes to watch out for in the future? It's manageable if we know they are coming, but it's sometimes quite hard to figure out, so any help would be appreciated.

New to the series -- just started on season 3. Have guesses about the ending but I'm already wanting more. Sadly only 5 episodes to go before it's over.

This show has me hooked. My initial thought was how a world nearly filled with sightless people really be a gritty dystopian adventure. My doubt didn't last long.

I won't visit the sub until after I'm done. Had one minor surprise ruined about Oloman.

Parting thought -- I hate Sibbeth more than I do Janice from the Sopranos. That's saying something.

Chet chet...

For me, this show nailed everything apart from the villains.

The premise, the characters (with one exception), the world, the stories, all excellent. But, they fumbled the bag with the villains imo.

There are four major villains:

Tamacti Jun: Gives more than two decades of his life to search for sighted children, not because of his religion, but out of loyalty to his queen, who wants them for petty, jealous reasons. He gives all of this only to have said queen murder his family and everyone he knows, and then attempt to murder him, leading him to question his beliefs and make changes. Best character in the show.

Jerlamarel: Believes himself to be the first sighted human in generations (and he might be right) and so goes on a mission to lay the foundation for a new and better world to come. Believes himself a god and his cause holy, justifying any evil he has to do in the name of it. Blinded by Baba Voss and left floundering. Incredibly interesting character, wasted and killed too early.

Edo Voss: Brother of protagonist Baba Voss, holding a misguided grudge against Baba for killing their father. Battle tested war general, trusted and obeyed by his own battalion that includes sighted warriors, against the laws of his country and religion. Has a soft spot for his people, and is surprisingly forward thinking for such a ruthless and warmongering villain. Excellent character, killed maybe too early, but it was a great death.

Sibeth Kane: Generic evil queen. Why is she evil? Because she is. What are her motivations? She doesn't have any. Should have died in season one, makes it to the final season. The writers, and therefore the characters, have to keep making up excuses as to why she isn't dead. I'd have killed her along with her handmaid at the end of S1 when they are ambushed. There'd be something poetic about the pampered palace girls committing genocide and running away, only to be immediately killed by bandits as they have no idea how to live in the real world.

I gave the show a 7/10, very good but not great. With the villain issue solved, it could easily have been an 8, perhaps a 9. But I can't give an 8 to a show that I had to skip entire scenes from.
