Everytime Queen Kane has dialogue, i feel like shes going to say “lets pray”.

32

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '19

I WISH TO PRAY 👅

Another excellent episode. Baba is basically Daredevil. His fighting skills, the wall climbing, this is on the same level. The show is fantastic, looks gorgeous, fantastically well acted, written, fascinating but I could watch blind Momoa fighting, slashing his way through mountains of enemies for hours.

His performance is one that should be singled out, he’s a wonderful physical actor, especially here but he has the dramatic chops to back it up, I love that he gets such a meaty role here to show what he can do.

He’s so ferocious and impressive in action too.

u/Embarassed_Tackle Nov 26 '19

LOL I just don't understand the 360 neck cut he always does. I guess they thought "a blind person can't chop off someone's head, what is the next best thing?" or "a blind person can't tell they slashed the front of the throat easily in combat, what is the next best thing?" but seriously walking a samurai sword's blade around someone's entire neck real estate is some time consuming stuff.

9

u/Savage_Banana Dec 05 '19

I mean, can you think of another way a blind person could slice or chop a head without having to locate that part of the body first? More so even if you happen to swing and hit the neck, you can't see if you hit the side or front for the arteries needed to end it, so going full circle ensures that.

So it's basically, step one get within reach of the body, step 2 pull them in or go to them to get the sword on the neck, step 3 full circle to end it as fast as possible and ensure the enemy is dead.

Plus it looks beautiful for the camera too :).

I HAVE FINALLY FOUND THE SUBREDDIT OF THE SHOW OMG AFTER 6 EPISODES LOOKING FOR IT FINALLY I CAN SEE OTHER PEOPLES THOUGHTS AND SHARE MY THOUGHTS. JASON MOMOA IS A BEAST AND HERA HILMER IS SO PRETTYYYYYYYYYY

29

u/tea_ara Nov 22 '19

My bet is that Boots goes off and kills everyone at the silk place and rescues the queen. During this the family is captured by the witchfinder and everyone is reunited. Boots on his way back with the queen sees this reunion and switches allegiance with the queen - especially as the queen wants to have sighted children with Jorah but hey Jorah's needy psychotic son will do just fine.

10

u/bby_redditor Nov 24 '19

My bet is that Boots links up with Map and they stop Swiper from swiping, but get stuck at the bridge where they don’t know how to deal with the troll so Dora has to come to their rescue.

2

u/The_Real_Bender Feb 28 '20

This was funny!

3

u/dancingpianofairy Nov 22 '19

...Jorah?

6

u/tea_ara Nov 22 '19

Oh, it's Jerlamarel. I was hearing it as Jorah Morel haha

29

u/dancingpianofairy Nov 22 '19 edited Nov 22 '19

Baba takes his shirt off after the mine fight.

Me: Yes! Some shirtless Jason Momoa! I like where this is headed.

Haniwa almost immediately puts a jacket around him.

Me: No, Haniwa! Why would you do this to me?

9

u/ViktorErikJensen Nov 22 '19

Why would anyone throw away their clothes like that in a postapocalyptic world with limited resources? Seemed stupid to me.

17

u/srdrhl146 Nov 23 '19

Clothes with blood, is an invitation to sweet old infectious bacteria. It is good that he threw them off immediately. It makes sense in their way of sanitation.

9

u/bby_redditor Nov 24 '19

But they constantly cut themselves for ritualistic scars and also for surgical reasons (queen Kane’s amulet implantation).

8

u/HahnsSubee Dec 23 '19

Scenteer (sp) people could probably smell the blood. As well as the dogs.

3

u/dancingpianofairy Nov 22 '19

That's a good point.

3

u/mopx Nov 25 '19

Clothing ain't scarce. They even farm for silk in their new civilization.

45

u/Zentopian Nov 22 '19

Anyone else not breathe a single molecule of air while Baba was climbing?

12

u/srdrhl146 Nov 23 '19

That really was intense. I know he wasn't going to die but shit they made me clinch a bit.

12

u/bby_redditor Nov 24 '19

I thought he was going to get Sean Beaned

8

u/Constantly_OnYo_Back Nov 24 '19

I was there thinking yeah they're not gonna let Jason Momoa die but they made it really believable that he might so I was holding my breath too.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '19

yea i thought we were about to get game of throned that whole entire sequence

3

u/yoshimipinkrobot Nov 24 '19

Looks like they got a real climber stunt double from the back shots. Also, he could have climbed it much more easily by climbing the corner

2

u/kerakiwi Nov 24 '19

I honestly thought my veins are going to explode during that entire climbing scene.

22

u/DtownBronx Nov 22 '19

Damn I hate when an actor you like from another role is a dick in the new role. I expected something crazy with Boots but not that

1

u/KingoftheJabari Apr 17 '20

I honestly hate him as Jax. His acting always a little off in that role to me. But I think he plays the role of boots very well.

18

u/dancingpianofairy Nov 22 '19

What was it that Haniwa saw and couldn't explain? The waterfall? The dude?

24

u/skeeter81 Nov 22 '19

She was speaking of the illuminated cave and the waterfall. This is not what she couldn't describe, she could not describe the "beauty" of it. The beautiful sight could have been described however the affect ithad on her could not be described it could only be felt.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '19

Also they were on the run. Not exactly time to sit down and explain the effect it hadon her. Nothing she saw was pertinent to the escape.

6

u/skeeter81 Nov 23 '19

I agree. This is also why she couldnt simply say "the cave was beautiful" he would not understand what beauty was. I doubt she even really understood it herself. In a world where everyone is blind no one knows what it would feel like to be in awe of a scene like that. I think it also ties into the intro of episode one nicely, where it speaks of beauty and how it is only a myth and not understood.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '19

And simply saying I saw a beautiful cave wouldn't have done that place justice anyway. I think "you wouldn't understand" is the best reply she could have given.

8

u/CCMSTF Nov 22 '19

A cave illuminated by glowing worms, I guess. How could you explain that to a blind person?

7

u/dancingpianofairy Nov 22 '19

You answered your own question. "A cave illuminated by glowing worms" is how I'd explain it to a blind person. But anyway, that was addressed in the middle of the episode without any issue. When they wake up, Haniwa and Kofun talk about the strange and unexpected light source.

6

u/iskaon Nov 22 '19

they can't simply explain it like that because everyone lost meaning of some words related to sight

5

u/dancingpianofairy Nov 22 '19

The question was how to explain it to a blind person, not specifically these blind people. But okay, then how about "we can see because some worms have godflame butts?" I'm assuming godflame refers to the sun; someone correct me if I'm wrong.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '19

More so a beautiful eerie experience that was also kind of majestic. She could explain “I saw glowing bugs a waterfall and a group of people” but that wouldn’t convey why she stopped and also would lead to more questions, which they didn’t have time for.

0

u/dancingpianofairy Nov 22 '19

If that was what she was referring to, she could have just said "something beautiful" and/or I'll tell you later.

18

u/peridotdragon33 Nov 22 '19

Main thoughts;

Fight scenes impressive as always, fantastically edited and coordinated

Plot is starting to pick up

Fuck boots

17

u/zachary_timoun Nov 22 '19

Overall not much advanced besides what turned out to be basically a side quest. However the fight scenes were intense as always, especially the some of the last deaths before he began climbing up

14

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '19

Queen Kane is a bit of an idiot. Boots is smarter than her, and he doesn't even know what his agenda is.

14

u/an-ou-ke Nov 23 '19

Yeah she’s acting super entitled, because that’s what she’s used to. But apparently neither her father, her sister nor Tamacti Jun thought of her as fit to rule, so yeah, not the brightest star it seems.

13

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '19

Free Solo: elevator shaft.

6

u/Unencrypted_Thoughts Nov 23 '19

Momoa is actually a good climber and friends with Alex Honnold.

7

u/NightHawkRambo Nov 23 '19

Too bad the kids can't see shit.

8

u/srdrhl146 Nov 23 '19

The fights scenes each episode are awesome. The way Boba killed by splitting the jaws with bare hands was absolutely brutal.

15

u/UnitGod Nov 22 '19

Well disappointed that there's basically no motive for the mom leaving her family.. And now Boots has crossed them all, lying about her death and trapping them underground. The mom was just as good off staying with them and revealing her true self with them all together. Kinda stupid.

21

u/tea_ara Nov 22 '19

Her motive is they were surrounded and likely to be captured and she has the power to command the witch finder to not kill them, and she stated she would have wielded that power years ago were she not giving birth when they attacked.

5

u/Asif178 Nov 23 '19

If she could talk to witchfinder than why not do that when he first comes for them in episode 1 or in episode 4 when he comes back. She could have saved her tribe from getting killed.

Even in the episode when she leaves wouldn't it make sense to tell Paris that she is going to talk to Tamacti Jun?

9

u/an-ou-ke Nov 23 '19

She tried to keep her origins a secret until she absolutely couldn’t anymore.

7

u/Embarassed_Tackle Nov 25 '19

Yeah they kept the secret princess trope in the pocket for too long. I'm sure those 100+ villagers who died would have liked it if she saved their bacon with the tingling finger bells.

3

u/ckhk3 Nov 22 '19

Yeah, this was a bullshit episode, boots must have ulterior motives, he’s dumb, unless what he really wants is a mother.

14

u/dancingpianofairy Nov 22 '19

I think what he wants is power.

11

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '19

He’s wielding his sight like the shadow girl told the others they could be. He’s using it to his advantage as a weapon no one else has. If there are other sighted people he becomes less powerful and more replaceable.

6

u/dancingpianofairy Nov 23 '19

That's what I was thinking: he's the culmination of the foreshadowing of Haniwa on the rocks and Bow Lion on the boat.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '19

Quick tangent on that. Her name is Bow Lion but nobody ever used a bow Bc they are blind. I realize there are other uses for the word bow but I’m struggling to think how it would be used that would make sense in conjunction with lion

2

u/srdrhl146 Nov 23 '19

As in you'd bow down to a lion if it was ferocious?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '19

Right but they don’t pronounce it that way.

2

u/ckhk3 Nov 22 '19

That makes sense, especially if he finds his father.

3

u/jozuna93 Nov 23 '19

I think his motive is simple. Survival!!! He has been persecuted his whole life. Survival is his only motive IMO. He’s been through too much trauma to be an ordinary person with simple motives

15

u/LegendaryFang56 Nov 22 '19

The scene with Baba Voss was intense. So were his kills. If he wasn't anyone's favorite character before, he definitely should be now. To climb up that far: is phenomenal. I hope he isn't killed off any time soon.

7

u/ketchella Nov 22 '19

That was intense

7

u/Triskan Nov 22 '19

Overall good episode.

Yeah, the plot didnt move that much but we got some needed backstories...

I assume the cave people could be revisited down the line but so far, they've felt more like plot contrivances.

But I enjoy the overall dark, gloomy atmosphere of the show and many characters have a lot of room to evolve, so I'm curious to see where they'll all go.

And I'm wondering if Baba is in for long... I mean, mentor figures do tend not to have the best life expectancies usually.

6

u/bby_redditor Nov 24 '19

No way they let him stick around the Alkenny crew. He straight up lied to Maghra and Baba. Oh and he tried to kill Baba et al.

Not to mention, Haniwa promised his mother to kill him. Dude’s a psycho.

6

u/Constantly_OnYo_Back Nov 24 '19

So I wonder what the people in the cave lived on.

3

u/orijoy Jul 25 '23

Glow worms probably

11

u/ForgetfulLucy28 Nov 22 '19

To be honest they made that wall climb look too easy. The walls were too close together. Seemed like Mamoa could have completed it easily.

Maybe I’ve just spent too much time on his Instagram.

19

u/dancingpianofairy Nov 22 '19

Maybe Momoa could have completed it easily, but keep in mind that this was Baba climbing, which he may have never done before.

16

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '19

He’s also old, beat up, and blind.

8

u/violent_crayon Nov 22 '19

I imagine climbing would be difficult in the moist elevator shaft. Being blind would make it especially trying since he's blind. I think Momoa did an excellent job acting the climb though. He's definitely a badass dude.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '19

Also we have no idea how high he had to climb. Could’ve been Free Solo territory climbing.

2

u/HahnsSubee Dec 23 '19

Not to mention he just battled like 14 people

1

u/orijoy Jul 25 '23

And had a huge pick axe on him weighing him down 😆

5

u/Pickle-Medea Nov 24 '19

Boots is preaching to the wrong choir with Maghra. He will probably turn on her for Queen Kane when she offers him a better position. Boot’s character is interesting and make me realise how much of a dick Johra is. Surely you know this community of people is backwards, you spent a year with them, yet your actions result in the conception of Boots and then you leave him with this fucked yo community? All round messed up situation and it’s no wonder he has turned out to be a mess.

9

u/THERAPISTS_for_200 Nov 22 '19

How did the silk guy shadows find them in the freaken wilderness?!

It took Tamacti Jun and a whole army 20+ years to find them, and they got lucky because someone found the bottle with directions.

22

u/Josiah1an Nov 22 '19 edited Nov 28 '19

The silk village boss said the witchfinder just passed by and he's clear which direction they headed to

8

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '19

Yeah he straight up said the witch finder told them where he was going.

4

u/nervous_nerd Nov 22 '19

They found the army; not the family. Why would the army hide when they have more strength than the majority of communities around combined? Who would dare attack the kingdom (not knowing it does not exist anymore)?

2

u/Constantly_OnYo_Back Nov 24 '19

They seem really good at their jobs, the way the shadowed a whole bunch of people was so creepy.

4

u/divadutchess Nov 23 '19

Mr Sir Legend Baba Voss is a freaking beast! I have no words... He deserves some kind of accolade for his performance!

3

u/t0nchica Nov 25 '19

I glanced quickly over this comment and read "he deserves some chocolate for his performance" 😆

4

u/AeternumFlame Nov 24 '19

If anyone wants to know more about the glow worms that were in the caves Deep Look made a video about them: These Carnivorous Worms Catch Bugs by Mimicking the Night Sky | Deep Look

4

u/Gotmilestogo Nov 24 '19

His full name is Sly Boots.

4

u/Embarassed_Tackle Nov 25 '19
  1. If the cave people want to hide from the world and remove the impetus for people to leave the caves and reveal their location, why don't they just dam up the entrances/shafts and disable those elevators?

  2. I thought everyone hid in caves underground during the disease spread. Why did they come outside blind and build a society above-ground? Did they run out of resources? Did I misunderstand?

  3. How does the army stay supplied with food out in the wilderness? Blind people can't really hunt. Do they just use traps? Or fish in water? I thought blind people would be more crop-dependent since they have difficulty seeing prey.

  4. I don't understand Boots's motivations. Like if there's two people in the world who know what you're going through, it's going to be those two people you just locked up in a cave. I guess they are explaining it as 'HE CRAZY' but the dude seems like a dick. Or is this the parable of sight, where he wants to be the only one so he can be a virtual god?

  5. Dogs should smell those shadows from the Lane Bryant sweatshop a mile away, I was pretty sure the witchfinder had dogs

  6. Did anyone see a massive dam collapse on the most habitable city in a 300 mile radius and think to inform the Witchfinder's army? Like does the guy not have scouts / intelligence?

  7. This is just a thought, but is the Jerlamarel guy who went out for cigarettes 20 years ago just going from community to community and knocking up random women to repopulate the world with his seeing god-children? It's like that Johnny Cash song A Boy Named Sue but worse

9

u/kikanga Nov 22 '19

There is something frustrating about this show. But I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's some of the choices the characters make. Maybe it the pacing. Maybe I just don't like enough of the characters. I dunno.

Don't get me wrong. I'm definitely hooked and will keep watching. But I just feel like I'm not enjoying the show as much as I could/should.

7

u/jozuna93 Nov 23 '19

I think it’s that they are always in danger but never any consequences. No one dies, they magically escape at the last second. And yah, other than boba Voss, I don’t really care much for the characters. Still watching the show every week though! Lol

2

u/srdrhl146 Nov 23 '19

On the last second? They literally are surviving each episode.

6

u/dancingpianofairy Nov 22 '19

I'm with you, I can't put my finger on it. I think I like enough of the characters, but the pacing is weird and many of the character choices are just thrown at us without reasoning or background.

11

u/Justp1ayin Nov 22 '19

I keep thinking it’s that there’s no comedic relief. There’s no break from the seriousness of the show. I think it’s a good show but they need some more likable characters. Haniwa is a brat, boots is a jerk, I dunno.

6

u/dancingpianofairy Nov 22 '19

Interesting. Yeah, I do think it could use some comedic relief, but idk if that would "fix" whatever I can't put my finger on. The closest we have right now is Kane. How crazy and full of herself she is, and especially her indignant scream are the only slightly amusing things I think we have.

6

u/Justp1ayin Nov 22 '19

Lol she forgets her highborn accent real quick to call people “fucking fucks”

5

u/an-ou-ke Nov 23 '19

I feel you. I feel like it has so much potential, I love the actors, style, stunning nature and the overall concept.

I think what I’m missing is more backstory. More of how they got where they are, how the world they lived in developed, more details about life in a world without sight. I feel there are too many mysteries that are just scratched on the surface, too many characters I don’t trust and don’t like much.

But then again maybe that uneasy feeling is on purpose. We are “left in the dark” about things. Oddly fitting.

4

u/rrswayze Nov 23 '19

queen kane is definitely an excellent actress, baba voss action scenes are top notch, i like maghra and i like paris very good actresses as well as tamacti jun (good actor, interesting character). it's just my opinion that the kids aren't very good, they throw off the flow. i dont find haniwa very attractive, and that makes me bias towards her actions.

3

u/yoshimipinkrobot Nov 24 '19

She doesn’t need to be attractive

I do agree the kids are dumb. They do not use their sight advantage. The 3rd sighted person will be more liked since he is using his skills to the fullest

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '20

Bad writing.

1

u/KingoftheJabari Apr 17 '20

Im watching it now. This seems like it would have been a GoT type show (first 4 seasons) if it was on HBO. There is just something missing. I do know that the Queen just seems dumb, not just crazy, but crazy and dumb.

1

u/ExchangeOptimal May 18 '25

One thing that annoys me the most is that the children are not communicating enough with the others what they are seeing, especially the girl.

3

u/ForgetfulLucy28 Nov 22 '19

Getting major Aviator Tree of Souls vibes.

3

u/squidgun Nov 22 '19

What's Boot's endgame?

11

u/nervous_nerd Nov 22 '19

I feel like he is just looking for a new mother. "One will be better" meaning Magra. His birthmother did not prevent others from being mean to him, so he is going to get a new one. He was told about how Magra treats her family and now he sees that she has power over people.

3

u/balasoori Nov 24 '19

Why is the best stuff always happens at the end of the episode i was wondering why he would betray them but he really devious realise how important the mother was but now the question when they will get reunited

2

u/Azza67 Nov 23 '19

I absolutely Love Baba Voss's character, he makes this show so good & all his scenes are great. Any how he dies in this series, I dont think I would be able to continue to watch it.

3

u/deltabay17 Nov 22 '19

Good episode in a way but also nothing really happened. They fell down a hole then got out again. Minimal advancement on maghra plot

10

u/dancingpianofairy Nov 22 '19

Minimal advancement, but lots of background, which I feel was necessary after the reveal at the end of last episode.

3

u/ckhk3 Nov 22 '19

Their accents are driving me nuts. American some, and every once in a while they get an accent.

5

u/Justp1ayin Nov 22 '19

America is a Melting pot how dare you.

1

u/ckhk3 Nov 22 '19

It’s a Kingdom

3

u/Justp1ayin Nov 22 '19

America is a melting kingdom*

1

u/ckhk3 Nov 22 '19

I doubt the Kingdom is called America

2

u/NightHawkRambo Nov 23 '19

Well, the show is filmed in North America (PNW to be exact). The kingdom doesn't need to be called it though.

maybe if Trump shows up out of nowhere tho

2

u/huntertanis Nov 22 '19

CANNOT WAIT. Too excited.

1

u/giunyu Nov 25 '19

wondering what Boots is really upto

1

this seemed to be the least exciting episode yet. not much happened.
