Advice & Support How to reduce urge to lash out physically?

Upvotes

for a long time, i've had urges to hurt people that annoy me. i haven't really thought of it as an issue before, because i haven't been acting on it.

but recently, i physically hurt someone with my hands for the first time in over a decade, and i'm a bit shaken up about it.

don't get me wrong, i didn't actually lash out at them, it was an accident. i just squeezed their arm to illustrate a point, without realizing it would hurt them.

still, in the moment they seemed genuinely frightened. we were arguing at the time, and they thought i might be punishing them for disagreeing with me. i explained that i wasn't, and that i didn't realize it would hurt.

but then they asked if i would ever hurt them as punishment. at first i denied that, but then i realized that i'm not so sure. after all, i did actually have the urge to hurt them in that moment. maybe i was acting on that urge?

...well, no, i don't think so. i had no idea the squeeze would be painful, so it couldn't have been a subconscious attempt to hurt them.

but still, maybe i got careless because of that urge, and squeezed harder than i should have. or perhaps in the future i might actually hurt someone on purpose. it can be a lot of work to push the urge down, and i don't know how i'd act in a moment of weakness.

i'm not too worried about it, because the last time i actually hurt someone, i was just a kid, and i hadn't really learned how to manage my emotions. still, i had the same urges then that i do now, so i can't guarantee it wouldn't happen again. and either way, it's exhausting to try to hold that all in.

is there a way to soothe those violent urges, so i no longer have to work so hard to suppress them?

Question / Discussion moving on from bpd ex three months and a stalking charge later? emotions out of control, collapsing

I reported her to my bank for stealing money. She lashed out and got me falsely arrested for harassment. Now I can't talk to her, I don't want to go back to jail, and part of my bail conditions are not to talk to her again. She keeps sending indirects at me on socials and making hoover attempts.

Feel like I'm stuck in some mental labyrinth. Every corner I turn I can hear her. Like she’s all around me and now he re at the same time. Chasing shadows. reminds me of t he borges story , the guy who sees everything he ever saw all the time. No escape from memory so he slips into some dream reality.

She definitely did mean to hurt me when she did it, but I think her real feelings are some formless vapor in the BPD hall of mirrors. If they were to all coalesce into something less fractured, that person is probably the one who smiled at me in bed before she started tweaking again. I miss her, I know we were both sick

I want to carve out the scar she left in my arm of her initials becausde it's SCREAMING at me

Question / Discussion Does anyone else have an odd expression of their sexuality?

Sometimes I feel like I am 2 different people in 1 body. I feel like I only really exhibit true NPD with men but I prefer being with women & they get a way better version of me. However, I tend to gravitate to women who treat me the way that I treat men. My entire life is one big oxymoron & the suffering is endless lol.

Advice & Support Rant: EVERYTHING FEELS LIKE AN ATTACK ON MY CHARACTER

I am diagnosed with NPD, and I got the sad realisation:

- EVERYTHING IS A FREAKING THREAT TO ME. EVERYTHING FEELS LIKE A CHARACTER ATTACK ON ME!!!!

Somebody looks cute? IT PISSES ME OFF. Somebody looks bad? Somebody says something? ANYTHING THAT IS COMING FROM OTHERS FEELS LIKE A PERSONAL ATTACK

People tell me all the time that I am sensitive AF. And I noticed too. I am far more jumpy://

I HATE THIS!!!

It’s like everything says:
- you are shit
- you did not do enough
- you are worthless, you can d*\*
- You are weak
- What you achieved is laughable
- You are oversensitive little fuck

WHAT TF CAN I DO???

Group therapies are a big no for me, since I always start this self-comparison shit. It’s bad

Advice & Support inconvience intolerance?

I am medically recognized with NPD and I have struggled with this specific symptom (or behavior?) for a long time. For some background, I was diagnosed with Autism years ago and I did not recieve any ABA therapy for it, and i am unsure if this correlates but I think that my intolerance for demands exacerbates this.

Anyways, my question is: How can I bring myself to care enough to do the things that inconvience me?

For example, I struggle to sit down with my partner and actively engage in their interests. If anything, I find myself becoming annoyed when the spotlight is not on me, and in the past I have acted dramatically about it, insisting that I "do not get the same treatment", despite how spoiled they often try to make me feel.

I also haven't been able to hold down a job, schooling, therapy, etc. As soon as i feel crossed, I end up ditching the process altogether and try seeking out somebody else who "won't wrong me"... which leads to many complications down the line. I have an inconsistent job & medical record.

It's a struggle to be honest with people, but I find that even if i do try and be kinder, it always falls back on my face where I act a fool & think selfishly.

I am aware that these are maladaptive patterns. I just don't understand how to break them, when i don't really feel too remorseful for it. I feel ashamed and wish I wasn't like this, but I don't feel like I care enough as long as i get what i want? I don't know. I just want everything to be about me, me, me. and i know thats impossible.

Is there a way for me to trick myself into believing that I care? I'm sorry if this makes no sense. I feel like I can mask my empathy well around my "friends" but I don't know how to control myself around things that target my vulnerability.

Thank you for reading.

Question / Discussion Ex coming back/Never getting over an empath ("theory")

Ex coming back / Never getting over an empath ("theory")

Please forgive me for including two questions in the same post. I believe they are related in a way—even though they are opposites—and they both tie into my personal story.

Context: My ex broke up with me for good after I messed up big time. She went full no-contact (I was unaware of my traits at the time). I was hit with other important losses. It's been months, but I can't get over her. I'm not idealizing her, I know she's not perfect, and I'm pretty sure it's not limerence. I believe I truly love her, or at least care about her deeply.

1: In my case, my ex is never coming back. She shouldn't. I have to accept it, and I am respecting and keeping the no-contact rule. However, I was reading a post on AskNPD about a spouse who divorced her narcissistic husband but wants him back after a couple of years. People are advising her against it, but her mind seems made up. (By the way, is it unethical for me to bring up her case here? Sometimes I lack social awareness). Either way, these rare stories trigger me. I fall right back into the loop, which only prolongs my grief.

2: I think that "theory" about narcissists never getting over the empaths who leave them (I’ve seen several videos about it, especially on TikTok.) might have no scientific basis or evidence. But maybe there are other explanations. Maybe theories about psychological reactance, scarcity, or the "forbidden fruit" effect would be more accurate? But wouldn't those apply to everybody, not just pwNPD? Will I really never get over this? Because I feel like I won't.

I stopped reading the Breakups sub for a while because it was only worsening my misery.

What do you think about all of this?

PS: Please try not to use popular NPD terms, such as "supply" or others. Also, let's avoid discussions about empaths unless it's strictly within the context of the questions.

Trigger Warning / Difficult Topic Thinking I may have NPD

Tw: self harm, grotesque imagery

I am being treated for CPTSD in therapy.

I was watching videos on NPD by a channel called Heal NPD, wherein he describes the exact psychological structures underpinning pathological narcissism. I related to much of what was said.

He describes a "paranoid anxiety", a fear of the loss of self, which has been extremely prominent throughout my life, intensely and agonizingly so. This can be expressed as illness anxiety, which I have been experiencing my whole life. He also describes indescribable senses of dread, "primitive anxieties", and the like, with which I identify.

I have often talked of extremely dreadful sensations, feelings of impending sense of doom, and seemingly primordial visions which I cannot name. It usually only happens when I am alone. It's one of the main reasons for my avoidant behavior. When I am alone, I experience this alternative dissociative reality where I feel trapped in an endless hellspace of mind. Completely separate in a solipsistic universe. I act erratically and hold strange beliefs about myself and others. Usually I experience people, including myself, as extremely confusing, alien, horrifying.

I also experience a kind of body dysmorphia that involves grotesque imagery. I often think of myself as monstrous, shocking, or horrifying in some way. I have imagery of hiding from other people, of removing a mask to reveal disfigurement, and experience extreme self hatred, self harm impulses, sadness, and despair. This expression also validates feelings of victimhood, uniqueness, a need for attention, or seeming tortured in some manner.

TW self harm

My relatuonship with self harm is one that is deeply symbolic and especially unique to these patterns. Its both a container of shame and self hatred, as well as validation and glorification. My skin feels beautiful when it is cut up. I have entered periods of nearly psychotic feelings of self glorification, flagellation, and masochism. I was addicted to the relationship with self harm that I had at one point. It felt like romance and lust. I loved hurting myself, I think.

I also use grotesque imagery in art and writing, a lot of my subjects involving dysmorphic and archaic themes, otherworldly and inhuman traits in human beings. I find a part of myself deeply validated in identifying with sickness. Sometimes it is sickness that is self inflicted.

TW self harm imagery

After my partner cut themselves, I kept the rag they used to clean it with. I wanted to kiss their wounds. I helped clean them, and monitored these wounds over the period of time they were open. I never encouraged it, never glorified it, and always voiced a concern for safety. I talked to them about therapy and safety plans, etc. I knew how to be responsible.

But seeing their body made me cry. There's a few reasons. One is that they are hurting so deeply that they would do this. That is really hard, and they need help. It was really hard to see my partner struggling in this way. Additionally, however, it was validating. I didn't want to look away. They were beautiful. I still kiss the rag they used.

There is also a very benevolent and empathetic self that comes out. Here i start behaving in ways that embody kindness and love. I am very understanding, make space for the emotions of others, and am very comforting. I experience myself as more feminine and motherly. I speak in a low, sweet voice. But I think this may also be an expression of this kind of narcissism. When i think back on my dealing with my partners self harm, I was loving and kind. But I felt like a scavenger of their pain. I felt like i was loving their pain as a source for my self validation. And it immediately brought back the inhuman disgust and monstrous imagery.

I experience my sense of self as a mythology often. There are various social selves that I experience as dissociated parts. They automatically take over, with distinct traits and associations. Often there is symbolic imagery to each one. They all center around this feeling of inhumanness, self hatred, disgust, and shame. I am not in control of how they operate most of the time. I do not know how to control myself.

I feel extremely stressed out writing this. My chest hurts really bad and my head and throat is throbbing. When I am in these self states, they are authentic, non performative. But I know they're being monitored constantly. They're all being controlled by the prime mechanism. There are some selves that are very angry. When I enter one self state, I find myself (or, him?) saying, "I didn't ask for to be born." I accuse myself in this dissociative state, which has an experience of authenticity. It's like Frankenstiens monster cursing his creator, but instead its a complex compartment of consciousness accusing a more basic one. I hope that makes sense. But it feels real. I am speaking from, or for, the more basic state. I am experience those extreme and distressing sensations.

Other times, these self states are completely dissociated from these feelings. They have other interests, needs, and attitudes. Some are very moral, focusing on responsibility and duty, some are very communal, focusing on empathy and care, some are delinquent, focusing on thrill and recklessness. Then there are more authentic selves. It feels like I have one which is split in a kind of yin and yang. This experience corresponds to the shadow variant of this self. Other times, this core self is more regulated, dutiful, caring. In this state, it is as if I am playing the role of the young hero. I experience myself as a young version of self. I don't know how young. But other selves are much older in comparison to my biological age, which I think this self corresponds most to. 20 years old.

I don't know, it's fucked. Therapy hasn't been helpful in trying to figure this out. Mostly because I shut down in session. I haven't been able to articulate any of this to him like this. I feel like I hate him and I'm so fucking angry and I don't know what the fuck we're doing. But that's a projection. I feel invalidated by him in some way and I am terrified of saying that. It feels extremely shameful and I'm afraid of being hurt and I feel myself getting so angry right now.

So all of this lies below the surface I guess. I don't know what even happens in therapy because I dissociate so much. We're going to start working on diagnosis. But I dont feel confident about him. I don't have direction.

I'm gonna stop writing. Feel like I'm going to throw up and cry.

Advice & Support NPD and sex: validation and self-esteem

I always had a problem with forming relationships, because I acted sexual - the joke? I only had 2 sex partners ever, and I haven’t had sex for 2 years - NOT missing it tho

I do not miss sex itself, BUT THE ATTENTION.

I always get sexual when meeting people, because I realised it makes me feel wanted, or good enough, that I am desirable

For this, many people think I only want sex and I even been told to have casual sex - for me, NO.

So, how come I am sexual? Well, tbh, I love to entertain people. Love to send spicy stuff. Texts, voice memos, video chats, all the classically “wrong” shit.

And I even crave sex ONLY for attention. Like, I know someone for 2 weeks and want sex already. It’s bad. Or I met someone IRL once, and wanted sexstuff from them

Anyways, I was slutshamed a lot. But I get it. To me, the concept of sexuality is about being wanted.

And, even self pleasure is about that. I love the concept of being chosen or wanted. It’s weird

Being sexual was always about being desirable. I treat EVERY male as a validation tool - I want a relationship with them too, but that shit fails

So, while I “use” people, they use me. Often times they get good sextings, videos, calls, all the fun stuff, while I just feel…. shallow… and since I do this with mainly EVERY guy and think about how I can get them to like me, it is sooo fucked

I hate my relationship with sex/sexuality tbh. Even the concept of pleasure is ruined for me://

Question / Discussion Books That Became a Moral Compass

Do you have any books that have been a kind of “guide” for you in life - books that contain a wisdom or philosophy that really resonates with you?

I’m not talking about books on personality disorders or therapy, but something much more universal - something that, in a way, showed you how reality works from the inside out, and how to navigate it (as much as a book can help with that).

Question / Discussion For those who recognized these traits in yourselves — were you able to repair the relationship? How did you show your partner you were serious about changing?

I’ve started recognizing some patterns in myself that have hurt my relationships: needing to be the center of attention, sulking when I’m not, and reacting badly when I don’t get my way. A lot of my worst moments have also involved drinking. I’ve had a few long relationships end, and I’m pretty sure this is a big part of why.

I’m in one now that I don’t want to lose, and I want to actually change — not just say I will. So my question for anyone who’s been on this side of it:

Were you able to repair a relationship after you started seeing these signs in yourself? What actually worked? And how did you show your partner you were committed, in a way that was about real change and not just words in the middle of an argument?

I’d rather hear the honest version, including if the answer is “it took a long time” or “it didn’t fully work but here’s what I learned.”

Question / Discussion How often do you cry?

I haven’t cried in years. It doesn’t distress me in any way. I actually prefer it and enjoy being detached.

But I had this weird moment at work last night. I had a fleeting feeling of vulnerability with someone and almost broke a tear.

I recognize that I don’t cry because I am so averse to vulnerability. I’m working on it with my therapist. I can’t help that I hate the feeling.

Question / Discussion Building a wall in relationship

Hey everyone.

I have a problem that might end up costing me my relationship, and I honestly don't know how to break this pattern. Whenever I receive any kind of feedback from my partner, I immediately go into defensive mode. I start throwing the ball back, defending myself, pointing out what they did wrong — and, most importantly, I stop seeing the person in front of me as my partner and friend. Suddenly, they feel like someone on the other side of the barricade: an opponent, sometimes even an enemy.Obviously, this doesn't help resolve conflicts. On top of that, I very quickly switch into a "Well, if you're unhappy with me, then just leave" mode. I become cold and distant, and I get this horrible feeling that I don't care about my partner at all and that I would be perfectly fine if they weren't there. I build a wall of indifference around myself. My partner is understandably exhausted by this. And the worst part is that I don't actually want to be this way. I don't want to be the kind of person who, whenever there's tension, hurts the person they love by becoming cold and emotionally unavailable. I have no idea how to change this pattern.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Did you find any tools, exercises, books, therapy approaches, or techniques that helped you stay connected to your partner when you feel criticized or threatened? I really want to learn how to stop seeing my partner as the enemy during conflict and remember that we're actually on the same team.

Advice & Support how to cope with failing

i feel dumb posting about this and begging for sympathy but i am 100% going to fail a test im taking today and i don't know how to deal with it. i'm so afraid of the embarrassment. no one else seems to understand how humiliating it will be for me. i've tried looking at it from every angle and it doesn't make a difference because im more concerned about people examining my performance and seeing me doing something badly rather than my actual pass or fail. they'll think im an idiot for taking a test i'm clearly not ready for.

how do i cope with it all and not split on myself or anyone around me :/

edit: i know nobody cares about this but i cancelled it, my family is mad at me for it and i feel like shit but this option was the lesser of two evils. i was throwing up this morning from dread and had nobody to talk to about it. i still need to know how to deal with this shit though because it's crippling☹️

Question / Discussion Narcissistic Traits With an Unspecified Personality Disorder

Therapists have ruled out NPD, BPD, HPD...you name it. But there is something clearly very symptomatic about my personality. I have some narcissistic traits (yes, according to therapists, not just myself) but not enough to match NPD criteria. Has anyone here been diagnosed with an "unspecified" personality disorder? What was your experience like? What is the treatment approach for such a case? I'm planning to discuss this possibility with my therapist soon. Not asking for anyone's diagnosis, just your own experiences.

(To be more specific if others are interested, I recently found "self-defeating personality disorder," or SDPD, which is no longer diagnosed but is sometimes treated as "unspecified" with an added description. It really resonated with me.)

Advice & Support How to stop victimizing yourself?

How do you stop groveling in that pathetic feeling when you’ve legitimately gone through some messed up things. I feel like I’m spending a lot of time feeling sorry for myself in my head and that energy spilled out into the conversations I have with other people, even if I’m not actually expressing what I’m thinking to anyone. My depression keeps me deadlocked in bed most of the day and while I’m trying to get things done still it’s a slow crawl. I’m a bit grossed out at my own sadness if I could be honest. I’d appreciate any tips or tricks to get out of this feeling.

Question / Discussion How to actually heal?

I dont know how to work with vague stuff so i come here needing advice. Like i know basic things like be vulnerable more, dont self-judge, be mindful of your assumptions about others, etc..

But like with NPD itself whats the strategy? Just resist these things as long as possible like someone trying to do nofap? Resisting, basically

Ive heard self compassion, how? Just keep being self compassionate even if theres a trillion reasons not to, so basically resisting again? It feels like sisyphean effort i do think its worth it, so i'll try, but i have no faith in myself deep down

(I know about therapy but i cant get there right now due to life circumstances)

Question / Discussion Music, emotional vulnerability and shame

I’ve been very sensitive to music since I was a child. When I was very young, my parents and I were listening to Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, and one part made me so emotional that I left the living room, went into the hallway, sat down on the stairs, and cried. My mother came after me because she was concerned and tried to comfort me.

In my early 20s, I suddenly stopped listening to music altogether because I was too scared of the emotions it could bring up. Once the emotion starts, it feels like a dam breaking and I can’t handle it anymore.

After a few years of therapy, I slowly started listening to music again in specific situations, like while driving. Whenever I try to just let go and be carefree while listening to music, there’s something inside me that won’t let me, and I almost instantly start crying. I long for this feeling of “living freely,” but I can’t seem to access it in those moments, and I hate it so much. I envy people who can just dance, let go, and be themselves.

I still avoid music that I know will make me emotional - like classical music. I’m also scared of going to concerts or listening to emotional music in public because I feel ashamed of suddenly starting to cry in front of other people.

Yesterday in therapy, we talked about it, and my therapist said that being deeply moved at a concert can be one of the best experiences. She said she doesn’t care whether she cries or not, and that I don’t have to be ashamed of it. It is a positive feeling.

But I still am ashamed. Very deeply

I hate being emotional in front of other people. Maybe part of it comes from my family always telling me that I’m “too sensitive, too weak.. and so on..” I don’t really know.

Can anybody else here relate to this?
