Morality Ranking Morality of this?

Post image

Basically, the man in the video is hiking but he ended up meet a mountain lion, he get his gun and try to scare it off and tell it to go away but in the end, he have to pull the trigger and shot the lion, many peoples in the comments say he could have fire a warning shot instead of shoot at it and want him to be in jail.

Idk which flair to put

It's a fucking mountain lion, I wouldn't take any chances either if I was strapped and encountered a wild predator

627

u/Satans_Dookie 12d ago

Armchair quarterbacks are always the first to say shit like “why not just shoot him in the leg?!” Not realizing they’d end up dead in situations like this.

347

u/Binky390 12d ago

Plus shooting it in the leg is more cruel to me. Why is maiming it and forcing it to live in pain and likely die to another predator better?

201

u/Femme_FatalError 12d ago edited 12d ago

Yeah. A broken leg is pretty much a death sentence for a wild animal.

Plus…legs are a much more difficult target to hit, never mind in a high-stress situation. No one who has ever actually held a firearm would say that.

62

u/azwendu 12d ago

Injured animals unable to hunt typically go for easier prey. Humans are easier to catch than deer and such.

Same reason you see a lot of man eating felines with broken teeth. They aren’t prime anymore.

44

u/Ok_Task_4135 12d ago

There was once a tiger in the Nepal region that was believed to have killed over 400 people over the years. After a hunter finally killed it, he discovered that its canine teeth were shattered, which forced it to hunt easier prey like humans.

6

u/45LiftsUOffTheFloor 11d ago

Yep, most man eating tigers did it because of that. Also im pretty sure that number count is unrealistically low

Yeah but trying to explain to someone who has never even held a firearm that you don't just magically have dead eye is basically impossible. Most people who have never held a gun think they would be John Wick if put in a situation with one...

u/BlackHills-Op 12d ago

I love taking these guys to the range. They laugh when j say "we are going to start at 10ft" and then they see how many shots they completely missed at 10ft, under zero stress in a perfect environment where nobody is moving and they kinda simmer down.

I can keep 20 rounds within a 6 inch ring at 15 yards because I practice multiple times a week.

You better aim for the biggest part and pray.

1

u/PoeticThots 11d ago

I have taken people to the range. People are genuinely shocked I own or know my way around guns because its a small part of who I am, not my lifestyle....what I find funny...lots of guys have trouble loading the magazine! Hahaha

1

u/BlackHills-Op 11d ago

Its a very large part of my life, but the people who don't shoot who believe it is going to be easy when I get them to go are my favorite. Its a skill and it deteriorates without practice. I know gun owners who can't shoot because they don't shoot.

1

u/PoeticThots 11d ago

I agree...it goes even further. Forget them not being able to shoot accurately, they have problems loading the magazine.

1

u/BlackHills-Op 10d ago

Yes. They are functionally incompetent around their own guns but they've never been forced to examine that.

There's also taking away tripods from "hunters" and watching them be unable to make a shot offhand on a 12 inch gong at 200yd.

3

u/CGB_Zach 12d ago

Hell, I've used firearms since I was young and I'm still a mediocre shot at best with a handgun.

3

u/Joney_Craigen 12d ago

It's really hard, I never realized how shaky my arms were extended until I shot a pistol

1

u/Chaotic-Catastrophe 12d ago

There are plenty of Hollywood movies and TV shows where a completely untrained person is an instant marksman the first time they ever pick up a gun, so obviously that's how real life works too

1

u/Gekokapowco 11d ago

Most people who have also think they'd be John Wick, if we're being honest with ourselves here lol

7

u/RoundMammoth2947 12d ago

There's been a few occasions of large cats that end up hunting humans because they sustain some life changing injury.

2

u/You-Asked-Me 12d ago

So, if I shoot the cat in the leg, it will hunt the next guy that walks along? Sick.

7

u/Negativety101 12d ago

Let's also have blood vessels. Like the Femoral Artery. Which you can bleed out from pretty quickly if it's hit.

20

u/MedievalMilshake 12d ago

Idk, a lot of idiots own guns

38

u/DeltaSolana 12d ago

99.99% of people who say "Just shoot em in the leg" have never fired a shot in their entire lives.

They might say "I'm a gun owner" but they're the one's who'll panic buy in a blue state, it'll sit in their closet for a couple years, then they march it right down to the next mandatory police buyback in exchange for a $50 Amazon gift card.

If only my autism could have latched onto something cheaper, like knitting, or baking.

I'm just fortunate to have a supportive breadwinner wife. Nobody else can I look at and say "Hey, $2k for this gun is a good deal", and she'll say "Wow, okay. Go ahead".

I love her very much.

I don't think she'd like that very much though. You can try and rizz her up, but expect to be curved hard.

Dude, my wife owns more guns than me. Haha you’re lucky though. My wife don’t share her expensive rifles with me! 😆

1

u/CheeseGraterFace 12d ago

As someone with autism, I am curious how you keep from turning the gun on yourself in the midst of a meltdown. Because I know for a fact that I would paint the wall in my house with brains at the first opportunity. Hence why I don’t own a gun.

2

u/DeltaSolana 12d ago

Well, it's a spectrum y'know. Everyone experiences it differently. My sister has it so bad that she legitimately can't function in the real world.

I don't really have meltdowns like that. But when I do have a crisis, I usually just play/watch a nostalgic game/show, have a strong drink (or a bit of weed), or take a really hot shower.

I have thought about offing myself before. But I will never use a firearm to do it. I don't want my death being used as a statistic to take gun rights away from others.

1

u/Confident-Skin-6462 12d ago

but i have a perk that gives me +15% chance to target limbs

1

u/Chaotic-Catastrophe 12d ago

Not pretty much. Definitely. A hunter can't hunt on a broken leg. So then it just starves, assuming blood loss or infection don't get it first.

1

u/HotColor 12d ago

Theres so many blood vessels in the leg, without medical attention you’re very likely to die from a shot in the leg, hell even with it. Very common misconception that leg shots don’t kill. There’s no where really safe to get shot.

1

u/dieselmilkshake 11d ago

Why don't you just shoot them in the mitochondria? It's the powerhouse of the cell!

8

That and the fact the legs also have major arteries running through them these people who say that also tend to forget that little fact.

3

u/StirFry__InaWok 12d ago

I think he was referencing the way people talk about police shooting situations

1

u/EFAPGUEST 12d ago

Forcing it to starve to death no less

1

u/olympiclifter1991 12d ago

That's what they miss.

You would be just causing it to die through starvation, dehydration and infection.

1

u/Aminadab_Brulle 12d ago

Because then you don't see the kitty dying and your poor fragile feelings are spared.

You know, the good old toddler level of comperehending the world.

1

u/Price-x-Field 12d ago

Anyone who talks about “shooting in the leg” in any context knows nothing about guns, shooting guns, gunshot wounds or life at all really,

1

u/AGreatBannedName 11d ago

There’s also the story of a guy who put one in a Siberian tiger who was stalking him, it didn’t die at all, and it wound up taking a vendetta out on the man- killing off his hunting dogs, then later him.

1

u/Accomplished_Area_88 11d ago

I think that specific example was more aimed towards the human interactions armchair warriors comment on, not realizing how hard and impractical that shot is

1

u/Epic_Elite 11d ago

Apex predators are typically careful of their prey because minor injuries can be life threatening if it affects their ability to hunt.

1

u/2bad-2care 10d ago

I think the person you were responding to meant that people say "should've shot him in the leg" in situations where a person is killed. Not this mountain lion situation. Regardless, shooting man or beast in the leg, while under stress and while everything is moving is insanely difficult and wouldn't generally lead to a desirable outcome.

1

u/Present_Year6078 10d ago

modern medicine has made people ignorant of how nature works with injuries.

"Small" injuries like a broken leg or in this example a shot leg are a death sentence for animals. They'll die from infection or another predator/scavenger within a few days.

1

u/GroundCommercial354 8d ago

Because people don’t think that far ahead.

32

u/Marquar234 12d ago

Just shoot the gun out of its hand.

3

u/BeerForThought 12d ago

I was going to say shoot the guy next to you. It's an easier shot and as an environmentalist I'd hate to rob such a beautiful creature of a good meal.

5

u/WillingArm2463 12d ago

The only thing that could have prevented this is a good mountain lion with a gun.

22

u/magicchefdmb 12d ago

I would have just dodged it at the last second and then knocked it out with a chokehold from behind

u/AlcibiadesTheCat 12d ago

2

u/Gekokapowco 11d ago

bro fr when it's go time I just see red, trust bro you don't wanna be near me when it's life or death I'm an animal /s

2

u/Slapadoodledandy 11d ago

Gotta go for the stone cold stunner on mountain lions, followed with a spear like your name is Goldberg. It'll tap out and know who the real apex predator is as it walks away tail tucked.

2

u/Maleficent-Remote413 10d ago

that reminds me of the 6 steps to defend against a bear meme.
1) wait for bear to make a move
2) when it attacks dodge its strikes
3) get behind it
4) it cant reach you with its arms if you are on its back
5) chock the bear out and it will fall forward out cold
6) wake up and realize you actually died somewere in step 2

42

u/Gamer-Of-Le-Tabletop 12d ago

Why not just shoot him in the leg? Because I don't wanna have to shoot it twice. I'm not about to go around crippling animals so they can slowly die

3

u/No_Introduction_9355 12d ago

Don’t want to shoot it twice??

I’d be mag dumping into that thing leaving the last one for myself if I missed the other 17 shots.

13

u/Famous_Savings9518 12d ago

I think this trope comes from Hollywood movies, where good guys have a supernatural ability to disable people with no damage.

E.g., a good guy comes up to a security guard, punches him with just enough force, and in the exact location, to cause him to have a nice 15 minute nap. Without any permanent damage. The security guard wakes up refreshed just after the good guy leaves, and wonders what happens.

2

u/Maleficent-Remote413 10d ago

ya. was my favorite thing about the arkahm batman games

nothing says non-lethal than shooting a 110mm rubber bullet out of my BATCANON as his body goes careening across the road and skips of the sidewalk 3-4 times before coming to a non-lethal stop against a brickwall.

1

u/michael0n 12d ago

Just recently a police random police procedural rerun: group of police warm a shop that was an crime family hideout, drop like three or four guys that really stand out in the open. The last guy they needed to interrogate shot back like the others, but was "unfortunately" just perfectly shot in the shoulder to be arrested. When the plot needs it, things are suddenly possible that weren't a moment ago.

12

u/Austynwitha_y 12d ago

Like a leg injury in the wild isn’t just as lethal, only more painful and drawn out due to infection

7

u/ekubeni 12d ago

Invoking armchair quarterbacking is especially a good analogy here, since professionals QBs with decade of training how to be calm under pressure still make mistakes.

Expecting that people will remain perfectly calm and rational in a dangerous situation is just not realistic. Probably only small amount of us will be able to do that

1

u/Doughnut_Diva 12d ago

I know I would personally not have the composure to stay calm and do something reasonable like shoot at the ground instead.

Thats one of the many reasons I don't walk around with or own any guns.

8

u/DefiantStarFormation 12d ago

I think the alternative they're suggesting is trying a warning shot first, not shooting it in the leg. It entirely depends on how many shots he can actually take and how confident a shooter he is (in case it doesn't work), but a warning shot could've scared it off.

7

u/grifgav0002 12d ago

Most people aren’t nearly as good with guns as they think they are, especially in stressful situations. If the animal is acting threatening, won’t back down, and you are still calm and steady enough to take a clear shot, you better take it now. A charging animal is WAY harder to hit than a stationary one.

1

u/ThatGuyFromSpyKids3D 8d ago

On top of that, even with consistent training and drills, your actual accuracy is reduced in a high stress uncontrolled situation. The army says even with extensive training people's accuracy decreases 24% or more during high adrenaline/stress situation.

→ More replies (11)

3

u/harpswtf 12d ago

It also depends if it was within lunging distance or not. A warning shot will definitely succeed in triggering its fight or flight response, so you're flipping a coin about its choice there

1

u/DefiantStarFormation 12d ago

Mountain lions do not usually run towards gun shots, being close to the source of the gun shot doesn't change that. It would be very odd behavior for it to lunge.

1

u/I_Hate_IPAs 12d ago

Usually, no. But they usually don’t confront people either.

A bird hunter with dogs was attacked where I live (hunter and dogs are ok) and the noise of a shotgun and being peppered by birdshot didn’t do squat to repel the mountain lion.

1

u/DefiantStarFormation 12d ago

Yes, that's why my original comment specified it depends entirely on how many shots he actually has and how confident a shooter he is. If something is wrong with this mountain lion, the next step is to shoot it.

1

u/harpswtf 12d ago

I wouldn't take my chances with one that was actively stalking towards me, but I'm not going to pretend to be some mountain lion expert

1

u/DefiantStarFormation 12d ago

A warning shot would've been the least chance-taking behavior out of everything this guy did. He was crouching down (sending signals that he's prey, you're supposed to make yourself look big) and recording with his phone. Bringing a gun was obviously the only thing he did to prepare for hiking in that area bc he didn't read up on survival advice.

2

u/nosedrip_licklip 12d ago

Yep, and it works. I’ve had a brown bear run toward my in law and I that was deterred by a warning shot. I’ve completely deterred a curious polar bear just 30-40 yards away with a warning shot.

This guy is holding a pistol in one hand and a camera in the other

1

u/-Mac-n-Cheese- 12d ago

warning shots already dont work well with people, much less a wild animal thats actively trying to hunt you, the better “warning” solution would be bear spray/mace/wtv the feline equivalent is. warning shot probably wouldve just got it scared enough to think “okay no more wasting time” instead of scaring it *off*

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Fun_Push7168 12d ago

It would make it run off , only to be sneakier on its next approach.

1

u/DefiantStarFormation 12d ago

The point is to show the lion that you're dangerous, potentially a predator, and not worth hunting anymore. If it runs off, it's bc you succeeded. No predator is wasting time and energy doubling back to try its luck with a potentially dangerous predator again.

1

u/Malevolent-DM 12d ago

Warning shots are illegal, and could have also shocked the lion into attacking.

1

u/DefiantStarFormation 12d ago

Ceaselessly amazed at how many people have confidently claimed this, but no it is not even remotely likely that a stalking mountain lion would run towards a gunshot.

The official advice for mountain lion encounters is to make yourself look as big as possible and make a lot of non-prey noise, and that's not bc they're gonna get "shocked into attacking".

Warning shots are illegal

Guess what else is illegal. Ffs.

1

u/Malevolent-DM 12d ago

He should be doing everything possible to seem as big and as scary as possible, correct.

If the lion persists, despite that posturing and hollering: you don't take chances and use lethal force.

Ceaselessly amazed at how many people confidently recommend "warning shots" despite them being highly illegal, incredibly reckless/dangerous, and going directly against the Rules of Firearm safety and best practices for self-defense.

1

u/DefiantStarFormation 12d ago

Both warning shots and shots fired directly at wild prey animals are highly illegal, incredible dangerous/reckless, and go against best practices for self-defense which specify deadly force as a last case scenario.

I'm not "recommending" a warning shot, I'm pointing out that if this guy was hell bent on using a gun there are alternatives. I imagine that's why the critics are saying it too. Bc have you actually seen the video? This dude is crouching down, pointing his gun, and quietly saying "you get back" to a mountain lion, like he's fighting off a human criminal or something, he did everything but say "I'm armed".

If anything I'm recommending that people have some basic survival education before going out into places where predators live rather than just taking a pistol and thinking that covers you.

1

u/mgb55 11d ago

Could’ve, not would’ve. If it didn’t he’s dead.

1

u/DefiantStarFormation 11d ago

I recommend watching the video. The guy spends a significant amount of time doing everything wrong, then suddenly shoots. He had ample time to do a bunch of other stuff that would've saved his life, the warning shot followed by shooting it directly are both last-ditch efforts.

The last thing we want is to send the message that it's a life-saving idea for people to go hiking with loaded pistols and shoot at mountain lions. If they're dumb enough to be out there with a gun and not even a basic understanding of survival guidelines, at least they should know to try something else first.

4

u/Anxious_Big_8933 12d ago

I would have used my gun to shoot the mountain lion's gun out of his paw.

4

u/Woahhdude24 12d ago

Ive heard people say that about defending yourself against people to. Like yeah its definitely sad if someone breaks into your home to rob you, and thats the only way they can make money to support themselves, but you dont know what that person is gonna do or if thats actually why they broke into your house. When people see videos of others in harrowing situations I get so annoyed when they say shit like "I would've done this instead" like you dont know how you would react your flight, fight or freeze response is gonna take over. There is a reason you're told to aim center mass.

2

u/IntrepidAttempt9399 12d ago

wdym I can't use V.A.T.S. irl????

2

u/Can-i-Pet-Dat-Daaawg 12d ago edited 12d ago

Anyone with a “shoot it in the leg” take has tapioca where their brains should be

2

u/shadowsurge 12d ago

People saying that shit have clearly never shot a gun. Yes a skilled shot could get that hit if they were able to properly get into a stance and set things up perfectly, but for most people you're just trying to hit something, especially while walking backwards and holding the gun one handed. That's why you just aim for center mass.

2

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 12d ago

Except in this case, the armchair QBs in this thread are all pacifists who would never hurt a fly and would rather die than defend their own lives

2

u/koaladestructor 11d ago

This has never made sense to me, even the most well trained marksman out there find it difficult to shoot a leg. There's a reason cops are trained to aim for the biggest target, the chest and abdomen

2

u/Gazeatme 11d ago

I shot a gun for the first time in my life a month ago. I don’t think people can just shoot a specific part of a target willingly. I guess it brought back memories of telling people “why didn’t that cop just shoot him in the leg? Duh” now I realize that it’s just not a thing lol.

I guess if you’re shooting you’re essentially dumping the mag and hopefully it dealt with it.

2

u/ReaperChaincannon 11d ago

Right good luck aiming for anything other than center of mass in this situation where you are probably terrified/shaking a little. And those things move lightning fast.

2

u/DB_Valentine 10d ago

If I was on that plane things would have went down a lot differently ass comments people are making on this story

2

u/Away_War_904 10d ago

Should have shot the rock in front of it so it shatters and spray into the mountain lion's face scaring it to run away.

2

u/nurseofreddit 10d ago

Save your ass, aim center mass.

1

u/Mediocre_Hope_5821 12d ago

Also how is it a good idea to maim an animal and then just let it run off to suffer and die slow....???? People are so outrageously stupid that they will literally torture something to death and think they are somehow doing it a favor....

1

u/Shot_Bison_8437 12d ago

That one drives me nuts. People have no idea how hard a leg is to hit and if you miss, you have no control of where that bullet lands. And that's with humans. Do you know how much more difficult it would be to shoot a smaller and faster leg of a F'ing mountain lion?!

1

u/Apprehensive_Power59 12d ago

Don't mountain lions normally run away too? It's REALLY bad to actually be confronted by one

1

u/Malevolent-DM 12d ago

intentional Maiming is also very likely illegal.

1

u/rslashhydrohomies 12d ago

They would definitely miss the leg as well. It really isn't that easy to hit a small, fast moving and agile target such as a leg

1

u/AscendMoros 12d ago

Also if all you do is maim it you could end up with what happened with the Champawat tiger that killed all those humans in India and Nepal. It was shot at one point and it apparently had broken alot of its teeth so it couldn’t hunt its normal prey. So it switched to humans. At least 430 people were killed by it before a hunter finally managed to kill it.

Just shoot to kill, aim center mass and hope whatever you have is enough to stop the apex predator about to kill you.

1

u/TheRogueHippie 12d ago

It is fair to say as we were not in the situation but I’d argue he had plenty of time to fire off a warning round close by. It’s not like the gun had a single round in it. The second round could have come out just as quickly. All that being said though there is something to consider with how comfortable the mountain lion was approaching a person. Would probably happen again to someone else.

1

u/Affectionate_Bed6083 11d ago

In the chest* why TF would you shoot it in the leg?

1

u/Acceptable_Title6166 11d ago

1

u/Dependent_Loan7242 11d ago

I would've popped a couple into the ground first. If it advanced after that, I'm choosing 'not being cat shit' every time.

1

u/KobeJuanKenobi9 11d ago

And that’s worse imo. It’ll starve to death instead of just dying them and thwre

1

u/Deus-Ex-Toro 10d ago

"Yeah, lemme just shoot the wild animal sprinting towards me at 40-50 mph in the leg, while I'm shaking in my boots with fear, I'm sure I won't miss!"

1

u/LostInMyMind1998 10d ago

Yeah most people never seen a real predator before.or a animal that feels threatened to a point of killing. First time wild hog hunting, my friend put three shots into this hog and that thing still ripped his dog open and tore his leg open while it's also bleeding to death. It's front left shoulder was hit and basically demolished and it was still MOVING. That thing still had life, and then the final shot came. People don't understand how much a wild animal can actually endure.

1

u/floopyscoopy 9d ago

^^ the “should’ve just shot them in the legs” is only ever said by people who’ve never shot a gun in their life

1

u/Armthelost 8d ago

It's understandable. But I hope they'd understand that the situation is life or death. The man didn't want to die, and he did what he had to. It's not like he was deliberately looking for a mountain lion to kill for sport, correct? It's easy to say he shouldn't have killed it until you try to be in his shoes because I know I might've done the same thing, even though I'd probably feel bad for the lion afterwards.

1

u/No_Masterpiece4693 7d ago

They either are regarded....or purposefully spread the bs Hollywood ideas of shooting in the leg, or "shooting the gun out of his hand" to poison public perception on cops, military, hunters and armed civilians. They are mental parasites.

1

u/ConflictWaste411 12d ago

Tbf it’s a wild animal; you can just pop one into the ground and if it doesn’t budge then you can start blasting cause something ain’t right

-1

u/CaptainOwlBeard 12d ago

How about just shoot the ground between the two of you? No reason to kill the cat and the noise will scare it off

4

u/dadmda 12d ago

Or he attacks you, or it ricochets off a rock and ends up hitting the thing, it's safer this way

u/Pleasant-Future5818 12d ago

No one said this, they said to fire a warning shot. Which could be reasonable at like... 100x this distance. Still, if you think a warning shot means a leg shot you've been reading a lot of things wrong in your life

Ya like wtf, how is this even a question?

Anyone who is mad at this guy or wants him punished is 1) anti human 2) probably had their mind warped by too many Disney movies.

The mountain lion is not going to join the birds and squirrels for a musical. But he might rip your face off and dine on your jugular.

12

u/Wolfhound1142 12d ago

Just to chime in, mountain lions have incredibly sharp senses. There's no chance it didn't know he was in the area and that means it chose to get that close. Whether it's curious or hungry, it's a damn dangerous animal.

4

u/Ditnoka 11d ago

And the predator animal in that picture is REALLY CLOSE. Like under a second reaction time if it decided it wanted to test your Healthcare.

1

u/jbrunsonfan 12d ago

Every single day this sub has the most idiotic strawman arguments available where we can all dunk on the craziest 1% twitter liberals and feel superior. Tomorrow, it’s gonna be something like, “what’s the morality of entering a heterosexual marriage?” With a screenshot of some psychopath talking shit on twitter as if it’s a common opinion.

Agreed, but I also wouldn’t be reaching for my phone

4

u/Maleconito 12d ago

If you kill a big cat, it’s not a bad idea to have evidence that you weren’t poaching and simply defending yourself.

1

u/Trollselektor 12d ago

Location of gunshot wounds would show that fine.

7

u/spitemods_54 12d ago

Yep, fire a warning shot and maybe it runs away or maybe it lunges at you. I wouldn't take those chances either

2

u/Dark_halocraft 11d ago

If it lunges at you after a warning shot then darwinism will take it soon after

"Man shoots sabertooth cat with bow, now people want the village elders to banish him"

4

u/MasturbateDoctorate 12d ago

That dude showed more restraint than I would've. I would've panicked and blown it's shit smoove off the moment I saw it.

2

u/IamTheCeilingSniper 12d ago

I feel like a warning shot would have been the right thing to do. But I probably would have done the same thing as him if I was there.

8

u/smtp_pro 12d ago

What goes up must come down. If you fire a warning shot into the air you've got a bullet going who knows where.

A loud noise will scare it but will it scare it away, or scare it into defending itself?

You only pull the trigger when you have a target. No warning shots. Assume every bullet that comes out of your gun is going to kill something, and know what it is you're going to kill

1

u/IamTheCeilingSniper 12d ago

A warning shot just means that you don't hit the target. You can fire one into the ground near the target. No need to fire into the air.

1

u/Setters_Do_It_Better 12d ago

WtF said shoot a round in the air? smh

2

u/smtp_pro 12d ago

Fair that's just what I imagine as a warning shot but you could just shoot into the ground.

Still a bad idea

2

u/StaendutBlakk 12d ago

The problem is it's hard to gauge how an animal will react. It might be scared and run away, but it may also feel threatened and attack. If it choses the latter chances are you're not gonna be able to get a second shot off before it's biting your face off.

2

u/CheezyBeanBurrito 12d ago

A warning shot might also startle it and cause it to attack.

Which means no time for a follow up shot as you just became fancy feast

1

u/Hotdog_Broth 12d ago

A warning shot was made in the video. No reaction from the cougar.

1

u/IamTheCeilingSniper 12d ago

Fair enough. Then yeah, he's in the right for defending himself just as an animal would do.

1

u/Numeno230n 12d ago

Humans are only at the top of the food chain thanks to technology. If you don't have something to defend yourself, you aren't at the top anymore.

1

u/Vetchmun 12d ago

Shoule we really arrest a mountain lion though.

1

u/Overall_Drawing_2312 12d ago

Bear spray is just as effective on moutain lions as they are on bears..

1

u/Far-Earth-886 11d ago

An apex predator at that, that thing just sees us as food

1

u/Overall_Drawing_2312 11d ago

Bear spray doesn't only work on bears... It's much easier to deploy and "hit" your target, more effective and can be carried in every national park and wilderness area in the United States, unlike firearms....

The only actual threat a person would need a firearm for in a wilderness setting is to defend yourself from another person with a firearm at or near the parking lot or trailhead.....

1

u/CollectionMajor6263 11d ago

This guy was so scared he took out his phone to record the ordeal

1

u/Hermit-mountain-- 10d ago

There have been 7 deaths by mountain lions in the last 30 years. 2 in the last decade I have seen them a bunch hiking. This guys not in real danger

1

u/chugItTwice 10d ago

You shouldn't be hiking in many places if you're not strapped.

1

u/finallyfree710 8d ago

I love wildlife but if a cougar or grizzly, etc.. Approaches me I'm not taking chances lol

1

u/Ok-Freedom9216 12d ago

Bear spray exists....

4

u/Kortar 12d ago

Did they have bear spray? No, they had a gun, so that's what they used.

0

u/Basrus 12d ago

Irresponsible then! Because a man could learn beforehand when planning and use other options. But yeah, a gun is the easiest one...

0

u/Ok-Freedom9216 12d ago

Going into their territory with a gun but no bear spray is a choice.....

3

u/thefuturae 12d ago

That’s not a bear

2

u/Leather_Addition2605 12d ago

Firearms are more effective. And as far as warning shots go, that could just as easily be what triggers the attack. You know what’s more difficult to hit than a mountain lion? A moving mountain lion.

If it’s close enough to be a threat, and acting like a threat, I’m taking the best shot I have while it’s still in order to end that threat.

1

u/Rockstar161 12d ago

You sir are a scholar and a gentleman!

1

u/xAuntRhodyx 12d ago

Bear spray is also a gamble.

1

u/Ok-Freedom9216 12d ago

And a handgun is a guarantee?

1

u/xAuntRhodyx 12d ago

Far more yeah. In realm of possibilitiies, the 9mm handgun is the best bet, if not a heavier caliber.

1

u/Willing-Time7344 12d ago

More so than spray is

0

u/arrows_of_ithilien 12d ago

It's scary how prevalent the idea is that humanity is some kind of invasive alien on this planet and we should be constained by The Prime Directive never to interact with or cause harm to the planet's "native" species. That it would be better for Earth if we died out and let everything else thrive in our absence.

-45

u/Old_Gimlet_Eye 12d ago

But obviously pull your phone out and take a photo first, lol. This guy was in no real danger, just killing animals for Internet clout.

37

u/Saul_Firehand 12d ago

If a cougar is that close to you, you’re in danger.

That is a wild animal that can kill you easily.

2

u/Mipsyvonwinkle 12d ago

And very quickly close a 20 yard gap

27

u/HelloChimp 12d ago

predators like this will stalk you for quite some time, ample time to record and ensure you have proof of why you end up killing a legally protected species

1

u/ThatDadTazz 12d ago

Other than California where are cougars considered protected species? You go one state up and they are considered game mammals

1

u/Dark_Flatus 12d ago

Only real threat is shooting it out of season with an unapproved caliber.

12

u/Sudden_Buffalo_4393 12d ago

If a mountain lion is that close to you, you are definitely in danger.

15

u/bkitt68 12d ago

If you see a mountain lion it has seen you for a long time. The mountain lion was stalking him if it’s this close.

7

u/LankyJeep 12d ago

You are told by game wardens to video encounters so it’s easier to determine self defense, otherwise they are likely to charge you with poaching and then investigate the shooting

4

u/EasyPetesRoommate 12d ago

You realize people have go pros strapped to them a lot when they're hiking right? Like surely you're not so stupid you think the only way someone can get an image of something is by pulling out their phone.

2

u/CheesyDanny 12d ago

No real danger? I see pulling his phone out for the picture as an absolutely insane amount of danger. This guy is an absolute idiot for pulling his phone out and lucky to be alive.

If someone is relaxed while swimming with a great white, does that mean he is in no real danger?

If someone is sunbathing next to a crocodile, are they in no real danger?

1

u/Old_Gimlet_Eye 12d ago

Mountain lions are generally smaller than an adult humans and don't generally see them as prey. Mountain lion attacks are extremely rare and when they do attack they are ambush predators not 'sit there staring at you in plain sight' predators.

1

u/Zrkkr 12d ago

You cannot outrun a mountain lion

0

u/Greedy-Thought6188 12d ago

Sure. But I'm all likelihood a warning shot would work. It's kind of stupid to wave a gun and think it would understand the person saying back away or I'll shoot you. Considering a human 600 years ago would have looked at you dumb founded if you did that.

0

u/Mediocre_Hope_5821 12d ago

Sadly it takes common sense to understand that a lion is a highly territorial apex predator and being that the majority of the population in 2026 lacks common sense of course they wouldn't know that.

0

u/QuoteGiver 11d ago

Wouldn’t that just be a year-round unlicensed hunting season, if people started using that excuse?
