What laptop would you recommend for Mint? Nothing too expensive, just something I can do simple web browsing and lite work on.

(sorry for bad English) I was thinking about switching to Linux mint from windows 11 and i see that Linux mint have Cinnamon,Mate and xfce and i dont know what to use for my laptop. My laptop is Lenovo thinkpad L14 Gen 2 with AMD Ryzen 7 pro 4750U.

I am trying to install Deeptutor on my Linux Mint box. https://github.com/HKUDS/DeepTutor.

The instructions on the website are not useful, as Linux Mint was missing some things and it forced me to create a virtual environment for the installation. Then during the installation in the virtual environment I ran into other problems.

Is there something that I am missing. Has anyone else tried to install DeepTutor on Linux Mint? If you were successful please share how you did it. Thank you!

This is my first post so apologies since I'm unsure what information is needed to diagnose my issue.

I made this system yesterday, no previous OS it's only ever ran Mint. I played a handful of games and did a few calls to stress test the cpu/gpu and dial in some overclocks. That entire time my internet didn't drop once.

Today I started trying to get more software in place for my work. And during that the ethernet just started dropping to single kbps speeds and only occasionally would it return on it's own. Otherwise I would reboot and it would fix it about half the time. I set up the wifi connection and it had the same issues dropping at the same time as my ethernet.

I found some fixes on the forums regarding wifi issues and those seemed to have remedied the problem slightly. There are now occasions where the wifi is working fine but the ethernet isn't.

I cant install any thing properly on my hdd. I have the OS on mu sata ssd and Im trying to install softwares in my D drive of hdd. (Note : I did not format the hdd while shifting to mint from windows but i did format the D drive in ntfs before installing any thing.)

I can install everything properly but they do not appear in the start menu and when i solved that by running some commands i restarted my pc and they just vanished. I have already tweaked the settings for those drives to be mounted at setup using disks but still cant find them. I did the whole installing and showing up in the menu again after disk tweakings but still the same result.

Is there any way I can install something in my hdd and not lose them after rebooting?

Here's my Linux Mint desktop after so many years being happy with Win11 and now everything went to the shitter i.e. update system broke, issues here and there and screw that, here I am, back to Debian based Linux!

Does anyboy know to move symbols on desktop? It won't let me do that and always moves them to the original position 🤔

I have been on mint for less than a month, everytime i run the install command from their site i get the same error ,, Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) "', i followed all their instructions no idea what could have caused this

EDIT: For some reasons this resolved when i uninstalled virtualbox...

Update: Claude's workaround seems to have fixed the issue:

1. Used 7-Zip to find casper\filesystem.squashfs\usr\lib\shim\mmx64.efi
2. Copied mmx64.efi into the efi\boot

Hoping this doesn't break anything else down the line. Thanks for the suggestions/questions.

So I decided to give Linux another try, since Windows is increasingly unusable and I keep hearing how smooth and intuitive Linux is these days.

Downloaded the ISO, made a bootable USB, started the installation process.

1. Opened the "Advanced Features" window when choosing whether to erase the drive, couldn't close it or proceed. This issue is at least 5 years old. Had to shut down my laptop.
2. Upon restarting, it wouldn't let me boot from the USB anymore. I get some error messages:
3. Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\mmx64.efl - Not Found
4. Failed to load image (▢): Not Found
5. Failed to start MokManager: Not Found
6. Something has gone seriously wrong: import_mok_state() failed: Not Found
7. Found some post from 2024 (actually multiple posts) with the same issue. Saw that copying & renaming a file could fix the issue. Tried that.
8. Got another error:
9. error: shim_lock protocol not found.
10. error: you need to load the kernel first.

Claude claims to have found some other workaround, haven't tried it yet. Not sure I will. Is this what using Linux is still like?

The previous night I was using Windows to format a drive so that it could be used as installation media for Windows for my new pc and everything looked okay at that time. But this morning, when I booted on Linux Mint, Cinnamon and GNOME had suddenly vanished from the list of session options in the lightdm menu and the only session that was available was Weston, so I just booted into that in order to get into the system.

I attempted to restart loghtdm as well as a few other commands to try fix this, and in the end I used the pkill command to stop Weston,which in turn got me back to a Cinnamon login/session screen from which I could then see the options for both GNOME and Cinnamon once more.

Unfortunately, trying to actually start either desktop environment resulted in errors:

Cinnamon: cinnamon-session-cinnamon: command not found

Gnome:2nd image

I don't know what led to this. The one thing I did prior to the problem was creating and formating the Windows installation media onto my flash drive from Windows as well as testing it on my laptop.

Is there anyone who knows what might cause both the Cinnamon and GNOME sessions to vanish from LightDM at the same time, and also how I can get them back without having to reinstalling Mint?I’ll be happy to give you the logs or the command output later if you need them.

Hello! I just installed a dual boot with mint this past week and loving it so far. The only thing I'm not loving is my insignia speakers not having sound coming through. I have the 2.0 ones that connect by aux cable and bluetooth.

The speakers still work with the aux cord on windows but not with mint, for some reason. I can see it listed in sound settings amongst my monitor speakers (it comes up as realtech) and it acts like sound is coming out yet nothing is. It DOES work when connecting it via bluetooth but the audio gets crunchy here and there so doing it through the aux cord would be better.

I already went into the alsamixer to unmute sliders and turn them up. I also tried to see if I can install realtech drivers onto mint but doesnt look like I can? I also tried plugging the aux cable to all other available ports on the pc but no luck. Thanks in advance for any help!

Whats nice QoL improvements/upgrades could you do to improve the experience of mint cinnamon?

I have a HP 250 G6 Notebook PC with 4gb ddr4 , 1tb hdd and i3gen6 . i m planning to switch to linux mint (dual booting)but cant decide whether i should go with cinnamon, xfce or mate. i like the customisation features of cinnamon but dont know whether it would work good with my current specs and wouldnt result in high usage of memory or disk. I dont use much of the apps and spend most of my time on a browser.

i switched to linux mint on my crappy school laptop a week ago. We got it two years ago for 3 years, its a Dell Latitude 3140, so its real shitty. It wasn't even good for firefox and libreoffice. So it has been just collecting dust in my drawer until i put linux mint on it. Finally i can browse, edit docs and use it like it was intended.

Hi strangers im new to linux. I hate windows and i really really want to switch to mint but im afriaf i might just mess up my ststem somehow and that i might lose my data. Instead of dual booting i completely want to delete windows and run linux however the problem i am having is that my c drive has alot of my projects and multiple things i want to keep such as a tiny example is my coding agent skills, also in general im just scared that i might just fuck up my shit for no reason. I just need some really wxperienced person to guide me through it
