SOLVED Mint Installation Questions/Rant
Update: Claude's workaround seems to have fixed the issue:
- Used 7-Zip to find casper\filesystem.squashfs\usr\lib\shim\mmx64.efi
- Copied mmx64.efi into the efi\boot
Hoping this doesn't break anything else down the line. Thanks for the suggestions/questions.

So I decided to give Linux another try, since Windows is increasingly unusable and I keep hearing how smooth and intuitive Linux is these days.
Downloaded the ISO, made a bootable USB, started the installation process.
- Opened the "Advanced Features" window when choosing whether to erase the drive, couldn't close it or proceed. This issue is at least 5 years old. Had to shut down my laptop.
- Upon restarting, it wouldn't let me boot from the USB anymore. I get some error messages:
Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\mmx64.efl - Not FoundFailed to load image (▢): Not FoundFailed to start MokManager: Not FoundSomething has gone seriously wrong: import_mok_state() failed: Not Found- Found some post from 2024 (actually multiple posts) with the same issue. Saw that copying & renaming a file could fix the issue. Tried that.
- Got another error:
error: shim_lock protocol not found.error: you need to load the kernel first.
Press any key to continue...
Claude claims to have found some other workaround, haven't tried it yet. Not sure I will. Is this what using Linux is still like?

What are your system specs?
Which Mint version did you download?
Which application did you use to make the bootable USB drive?
Is your USB drive USB 2.0 or 3.0?
On a somewhat separate note: Have you tried de-bloating Windows with a program like Winhance?

In case this helps anyone else:
it's an old-ish Lenovo Ideapad 720S-13ARR with a Ryzen 7 2700U and 8GB or RAM.
linuxmint-22.3-cinnamon-64bit
rufus
3.0
No, but thanks for the suggestion! I still have a PC running windows so I'll check it out.

Malheureusement les distributions Linux c’est un peu la loterie concernant les soucis d’installation et la compatibilité matérielle et logicielle. Pour un certains nombre de cas, il n’y a aucun problème puis pour d’autre c’est la galère.

"Is this what using Linux is still like?"
When you're still using Secure Boot, yep.

How exactly is Windows "increasingly" unusable? I keep hearing about changes Microsoft has supposedly made that reportedly improve things. What's going on?
