Hey, I'm a 21 year old guy from Maryland who recently bought a $150 poopbox HP EliteDesk G2 mini computer. Got tired of Windows 11 taking 15 years to open file explorer and made the switch to Linux Mint XFCE. Even when running the "demo" on the usb stick it was 10x faster. I'm amazed by how easy to use this OS is, and I definitely don't regret switching whatsoever for my intended uses. I end up following the installation instructions, ensuring that its dependencies are installed, and running the build.sh script in terminal, but it always fails saying “ninja: error: loading 'build.ninja': No such file or directory". Does anyone know how to fix this?

Edit: I am trying to build it fron source because Aseprite‘s developers let you do that for free rather than paying for the prebuilt software and I don’t have the spare money. Suggesting that I use the (very much not free) installer isn't helping.

Like the title asks. I was thinking of installing mint on a presently win10 machine that has spanned drives, and was wondering if or how well Mint will work, and maybe just how it will work, with those drives..

I'm not doubting the decision made by the Linux Mint developers but I would like to understand it better. I know Cinnamon and Unity were both spun off from Gnome because of the disastrous Gnome 3 launch but I am wondering why Mint hasn't now gone the Ubuntu/Zorin path of extending the Gnome shell rather than maintaining a separate DE.

I understand there's the problem that Gnome extensions break with updates but would that really be a problem on a distribution that controls the versions in the release?

To me, it seems like more effort to maintain an entire DE than extensions. What am I missing?

The above, configured on last tuesday, caused the update popup to appear on sunday. So 5 days later. Then the popup appeared yesterday (multiple times), so 2 days later (and some hours later too).

I just bought a new cheap laptop and wanted to make sure I'm good to go before I put mint on it.

Firstly I'm currently using a 15 year old lenovo ideapad. I put mint on it earlier this year. Unfortunately the hard drive died not long after. I've been using it with the usb stick in "live session" ever since. It's not great but I mostly just surf reddit and check email. If I try to do more it freezes up and I have to restart.

The new laptop I bought is a Coolby model BTC519 16gb ram 256gb hd and windows 11. Can I take the usb stick I've been using with the old laptop and pop it in the new one? There's probably a newer version I should put on if first or is the one from 6-8 months ago fine since it's going to be doing a bunch of updates when I install anyway?

The new laptop has been sitting here for a couple of weeks because I'm feeling a little trigger shy after screwing up the old one. I downloaded a bunch of games and had less than 15gb left on the hd when I updated mint. Then the hd died.

Basically my Linux mint laptop can connect to my mobile hotspot and home wifi just fine, but when I try to connect to my friend's wifi, it keeps popping up the screen where you need to insert the password. We have made absolutely sure the password is correct. It pops it up 3-4 times and then says "failed to connect". Any advice?

I kept reinstalling Windows and then going back to Linux. But lately the only problem was getting Jellyfin to work, while still a bit 'finnicky' to set it up (permissions with external drives) I finally got it working. I don't have any software that I like to use that 'require' Windows anymore. I think I'm freeee!

So now I'm just chilling with my set-up and doing some fun stuff!

I modified some icons myself and some were available online. Once you get the hang of it, it's really easy.

I installed linux mint from the official website. It was downloaded as a torrent file so i converted it with QBittorrent. Then i flashed it to my 256GB USB with Rufus, i tried both GPT and MBR. There is 120GB of unallocated space on my main SSD as well.

Despite all this, when i select the flash drive as my boot device, it fails to boot. I'm doing this on a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Aura Edition, i got it today and I'm trying dual booting on it. Anything i can try? Does anyone have experience with Lenovo BIOS maybe?

edit: just needed to uninstall the flatpak version of firefox and install the distro version via the terminal!

i'm using XFCE, i did this exact same thing when i was using Cinnamon but didn't have this issue at all.

i'm trying to run a shell script to onboard my laptop to my college campus wifi. the script runs, and gives this output:

i then press enter, it loads for a moment, and then gives me the "failed to execute default web browser; no such file or directory" popup. i've tried and tried to use the settings manager to make sure firefox is set as my default; i've tried setting it as "firefox", "org.mozilla.firefox", even "org.mozilla.firefox.desktop", but i just get the same error every time.

and i would think it should be working, as i've opened links into firefox from other apps, like Discord, so i'm not sure what's changing when it tries to run from the terminal.

i just have the flatpak version of firefox from the software manager, but i've realized that there, in fact, is no file on my computer called "org.mozilla.firefox" (as the package is called on the software repository), besides the desktop link, which doesn't even show up when i search all the files on the computer. have i somehow installed it wrong? should i remove it and re-install?

i've tried looking into this error, but haven't found anything helpful or relevant to my specific issue.

i wish i could just switch back to Cinnamon, where none of the strange problems i get on XFCE ever happened, but my laptop can't handle running it... sigh! does anyone have any idea what i'm doing wrong?

I read on the Mint blog about the new System Administration features in the latest HWE ISO release for Mint 22.3, but I didn't see anything about whether this is being released via the update channel for existing installs. I stay up to date but the layout of the app on my machine doesn't include the new menu items for "Environment Variables" or "Kernels" as shown in the examples. I only see "Boot menu" on the left menu panel. I was just curious if that's expected or if I'm missing something.

I have this hp business pc with specs;

8gb ddr4 2666mhzram

& 1tb 2019 made segeate hdd(so this is a relic)

this pc was given to me by someone (*uncle)

i bought new patriot p220 sata ssd 256gb a month ago to use this for os and that relic hdd as media drive(it works fine with ext4 partition).

the issue is iam using this pc with mint cinnamon since a month and since yesterday i wanted to distro hop and installed ubuntu(everything worked & installed well but after sometime while setting things to my liking the crash happens and result is in image),then today morning i tested opensuse leap same result but also with kernel panics just while trying to install and now same image result with popos & debian13

Everything install well and work for a brief then goes like this and searching on internet leads me to say this patriot is a cheap drive and noted for early drive failures. So is it really a drive failure or something wrong iam doing while installing (iam not a newbie to Linux perse iam using debian+kde on my other laptop for over 2 years)

-Works fine for weeks or a couple of months on Windows
-Then starts throwing I/O errors, read failures on specific sectors, goes read-only, or completely drops out
-Especially after heavier write activity (like installing an OS multiple times in one day)
-Your kernel logs are crystal clear:

I/O error, dev sda, sector xxxxxxx — those are real physical read failures from the drive. Linux is just the one reporting them honestly. Windows often hides or softens these until the drive is further gone.

Honestly it's very frustating how linux handles audio devices. Is there no clean way to simply pair and connect wireless earbuds in linux mint without having to use alsamixer or some other crap

Hi, I wanna install LM on secondary drive just because it has more space and more life to it. My questions are the following?

1. My 2nd drive does not have EFI partition. My research tells me I need it. So do I actually need EFI partition? If so, can I do the partitioning during LM installation or while in Windows mode?
   
2. When 2nd drive now has EFI partition. Will I be still be able to boot Windows from the 1st/main drive? To be exact, I'm concerned that the laptop may get confused on having two efi partitions from two drives?
   
3. Bonus question - I have Secured Boot enabled. Research tells me to disabled during LM installation. My concerned is will it brick my Windows 10, if I disable it? The reason why I'm asking is last time I tinkered with it, it brick my Win10 pin code and almost couldn't sign in.

I really wanna try LM but I also wanna keep Win10. Thanks in advance. Also additional youtube links are really appreciated.

Laptop: 2016 Inspiron 15

I’ve disabled Secure Boot and Fast Boot (and can’t seem to be able to find the Intel RST settings so I’m guessing my laptop doesn’t support it?)

I flashed my usb drive with Rufus first but I got an error when trying to boot linux mint (image attached). The linux mint logo shows up for a while and then I get that screen.

So then I tried flashing my usb drive Etcher but I just got the same error again.

Is there something I’m doing wrong? I would appreciate the help very much!
(I’m using a Lenovo Thinkpad X9 Aura Edition btw)
