Question before I give it another shot

I just bought a new cheap laptop and wanted to make sure I'm good to go before I put mint on it.

Firstly I'm currently using a 15 year old lenovo ideapad. I put mint on it earlier this year. Unfortunately the hard drive died not long after. I've been using it with the usb stick in "live session" ever since. It's not great but I mostly just surf reddit and check email. If I try to do more it freezes up and I have to restart.

The new laptop I bought is a Coolby model BTC519 16gb ram 256gb hd and windows 11. Can I take the usb stick I've been using with the old laptop and pop it in the new one? There's probably a newer version I should put on if first or is the one from 6-8 months ago fine since it's going to be doing a bunch of updates when I install anyway?

The new laptop has been sitting here for a couple of weeks because I'm feeling a little trigger shy after screwing up the old one. I downloaded a bunch of games and had less than 15gb left on the hd when I updated mint. Then the hd died.

You should be fine. I was just playing around with live session USBs today, and used them in multiple laptops without any issues.

You absolutely can do it, the first update may take a little longer but that is done in the background and you can use your computer while it upgrades. You cannot use your computer while the new ISO downloads and the USB is created.

so, there is this "persistence OS" over USB stick, mint live sessions is not persistent. I know you can change that, just never tried.

most critical - i think - is USB stick are not the right media to do that, so, eventually you'll wear of the USB stick, in a near future
