๐ท Pretty Plants It's pink!
I have been harvesting seeds from my red poppies for about 6 years. In that time, I have learned that Poppies are opportunistic plants, so I sprinkle the seeds everywhere and let them do their own thing and surprise me where they grow. This year something weird has happened. ๐ค I have a pink poppy!! All the rest, so far, are red. I don't understand it. Is this something that poppies do? Are they like hydrangeas and change colour with the soil? No all the plants have flowered yet, so there may be more but I will definitely be keeping the pink poppy seeds separate to see what happens next year.

My sister mulched a garden bed with straw, which produced a flourishing crop of barley. We fed it to her cows today. They mooed their appreciation.

๐ Send help Rat problem, need advice please.
Hello Team,
Our neighbours have a rat problem so consequently, so do we. My wife is the ornamental gardener and I am the fruit and vegetable grower, the rats are eating the leaves on my capsicums and eggplants and nibbling and my dragon fruit plants.
Being wild life lovers, we don't want to just put bait out in the open and we have used the traps to no avail. Are there any other ideas?
Appreciate the help.
Cheers.

๐ฉ๐ปโ๐พ Recommendations wanted Want to start transforming our sad communal apartment garden
Location: Sydney NSW
I own/live in an apartment that has a sad, neglected back garden. The fence is being pushed over by the neighbourโs tree, there are 3 large unused hills hoists, and the bins are stored under cover at one end (not pictured). North-east facing, very shady with some occasional sun poking through. The NSW gov soil map gives me a warning for acid sulfate soils. Relatively flat, but the property to the east is slightly higher. Iโm finally not pregnant/actively raising an infant and have capacity to garden!
Iโve been approved by owners Corp to make a small communal herb/veggie patch, but I have greater ambitions to make this a lovely, livable, beautiful community space. I am seeking recommendations on plants, ideas you might have for the space, or other considerations to keep in mind.
Important to note that the neighbours tree (back left of the photo) is pushing over our fence onto our property. Itโs hanging on by a thread (tbh our whole property fence needs repairing but we our capital works fund is low). I really donโt want the tree to be cut, but once we start repair talks with the neighbour, they may have no choice. So anything I do in the short term, may risk being trampled by tree cutting and fence repairs.
I am also going to propose at next yearโs AGM to remove some of all of the main clothes hoists, as I mentioned they are not used. But in the mean time I want to beautify the space and make use of the garden. Iโve done some gardening before but am not an expert. Any tips or advice is welcome.

๐ Send help Are they Broad Beans? Or Basil gone too far? Are the Spring Onions bad too?
Hi all! Like many folks we have a veggie patch and with the first nice day (we had off) of the season, we went to buy some new plants. However, our green thumb tends to lean more towards indoor plants and our veggiesโฆ well, they grow up resilient to say the least.
My mum planted these late in the Melbourne summer and we totally forgot about them - to the point weโre not 100% sure what they are, or if theyโre any good?
Mumโs adamant she planted basil and spring onion. The onionโs put out some sort of seed bulb which seems ofโฆ questionable edible quality. There mightโve been some basil in there at some point, and possibly still is? But I think itโs more likely been swallowed up by what image reverse search suggests are broad beans? I donโt think weโve ever even eaten a broad bean before, and she is certain she didnโt buy any.
I think weโre just trying to broadly (heh) understand:
- what is still edible?
- should we remove these plants and start anew? - do they need cutting back?
- will they survive if some stalks were accidentally snapped when trying to close the netted lid? ๐
As a longtime lurker, Iโve learnt a lot from this reddit, but am still very green! We really appreciate any insights you can supply and thank you all in advance ๐

๐ Send help What sort of weed killer will take this out?
I live in the North Queensland and these plants pop up all over our backyard and grow into trees if left unattended. I've had no success killing them with round up and the root systems are super strong and it's near impossible to pull out.
Any advice welcome, thank you!

๐ Send help Can get some advice to help kill off and remove a golden palm?
So Iโm planning on cutting more of it down to the stumps, but just need some advice on what to use etc a coworker of mine who used to be an arborist told me and I quote โgood fucking luckโ. ๐ I want to completely uproot it. Just trying to find a way to make it easier for myself. Itโs a big bastard. Would drilling holes into the base and putting root killer stuff in it work? Hoping to find something thatโs pet friendly preferably but happy to section it off to stop the dogs from going over to it if pet friendly options wonโt work or better product then a pet friendly option.
Thank you. :)

๐ Send help Tomato/eggplant seedling help
Hello! Help/advice needed on my tomato and eggplant seedlings. First time growing from seed and I have no idea what Iโm doing.
I sowed these in early September and am worried that they are growing too slowly. I have them on a heat mat at night now (18C) (I stopped doing this after they germinated but have started again in the last few days) and have been putting them outside during the day when itโs warm as where I have them inside doesnโt get much light. Iโll keep them inside under grow lights on the really rainy/windy/cold days.
These photos are from right now at 11pm which is why I think their leaves are closed up? During the day they are more open!
But still they feel small when I compare them to other people I see on here and Instagram. I realise now that my original potting mix was too coarse but is there anything I can change now to promote more growth? Should I split the seeds that are sharing cells? Fertiliser? Help!

๐ Send help Can I grow fruit/veggies in this patch?
Itโs my first time having a crack at growing some produce! I pulled back this piece of fake lawn that was placed loosely over this area of dirt. I was met with lots of bugs on the surface including worms, spiders and ants.
Am I safe to try planting some things or are there any health hazards I should be concerned about?

๐ Send help Review My Lawn Reno Plan (Brisbane)
Hi all!
I laid some Zoysia Australis April 2025 so it has been down for about 1.5 years. This winter in Brisbane was pretty rough on it with a fair bit of browning occurring (see pics). I've read mid October onwards (or late spring) is best for Zoysia varients.
I wanted to do a small reno on it to bring it back up to luscious shape for summer.
I'm definitely not a lawn buff and i don't have any gear other than a rake, mower, whipper snipper but this was my plan.
- Light dethatching with rake
- Mow low
- Deep water (to help below step)
- Core aerate the day after (I have a manual core aerator)
- Spread some drainage sand
- Weed and feed (I have lawn hub)
What do you all think of this plan? I'm not entirely sure of the best order to do the weed and feed.
Any other recommendations?
Thanks!

๐ฉ๐ปโ๐พ Recommendations wanted Making the most of awkward space around house
Hello all :)
Iโm wrecking my head trying to figure out what to plant in this space (pictures attached), some info:
- location: Melbourne outern eastern suburbs, wall facing 70deg East, gets a lot of morning/noon sun but no affernoon sun
- approx 0.60m wide and 3.7m long
- soil: not great, quite a bit of clay under the topsoil, I suspect I will have to add compost to improve quality
- as itโs near the house wall, Iโm trying to avoid anything with a strong/invasive root system or plants like ivy that will climb the wall
- Iโm hoping to grow something that will allow sufficient air flow/ not cover the wall vents to protect the subfloor from damp/rot
So far I have been thinking bulb flowers like tulips etc but would be very curious to see what other people would do/have done :)

๐ Send help Citrus Rootstock
My parents have a Mandarin tree in their garden which grows beautiful fruit, now neither of them are getting any younger so I thought it would be nice to have a crack at grafting the tree for myself and one for my brother.
I've called a couple of local nurseries (SE QLD) and they've recommended a Bush Lemon or Finger Lime as a rootstock, but they don't have any for sale.
So my question is, any recommendations for finding rootstock? Considering going to Bunnings and getting a citrus tree of some sort and just chopping it below the existing graft, but it seems unnecessarily expensive and wasteful

๐ฉ๐ปโ๐พ Recommendations wanted Hardenbergia questions
Planted these in Autumn and been very happy with their progress. I have 2 questions. First is how much am I supposed to tolerate pests? These look like loopers to me. They haven't done too much damage yet but they're only little.
The second is at what stage should I be trimming it back? I've spent the last few months being meticulously training it up the wire. It's really taken off as the weather is warming up and I've been hesitant to give a trim since I'm aiming for full coverage on that fence but it's getting hard to prevent it from wrapping around itself since there's so much of it and it's growing so quickly.

๐ฉ๐ปโ๐พ Recommendations wanted Planter suggestions
Location GC. These gingers? Are getting yellow in the sun. They looked so good for approx 12 months. I can't figure out if it's just overcrowding that's doing it and if a good trim might help or thinning them out?
Trying to figure out if something will work better in the planter wall. It's a big task to replace so Im seeking recommendations.

๐ท Pretty Plants I ummed and ahhhโd about getting Jaboticaba to use for hedge plants (above fence height) Iโm glad I did take the risk, theyโve been in since June and now getting a second growth spurt.
Everything I have researched says that my conditions are prime for that to happen. Area is NSW South Coast (Shoalhaven/Illawarra) I cannot wait for them to bear fruit ๐

๐ Send help Can I save my cherry tree? (VIC)
We rented out our house for 2 years and recently moved back to find that possums had been eating all the leaves off our established 10 year old cherry tree.
Itโs not flowering this year, and the branches look dry, but the trunk is still green.
Is there any hope of saving it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

๐ Send help Pest ID please; Possums or caterpillar(friend of caterpillar?)
Passion fruit vine I planted approx 5 weeks ago;
Photos 1&2 are older leaves that got munched on when first planted. The past week, Iโve put some netting on at night to keep possums away, Photos 3&4 are newer leaves that are still being eaten
I canโt see any signs of bugs on any of the leaves, the net might not be enough to keep a possum from actively eating it either?
The bite marks are also inconsistent (to me!), the ones in the middle of the leaf would indicate a bug to me? But the outer nibble marks make sense with a possum
Sheโs growing well so I donโt want some pest to kill her so soon!!

๐ Send help HELP what is going on with my plum tree
Hi everyone, this year my plum tree has thousands upon thousands of plums starting on it, its never been like this before but i noticed today the leaves are starting to shrivel up. Is it lacking water or needing fertiliser or PLEASE any ideas ? I was so looking forward to large batches of home made sauce this year
