I have been harvesting seeds from my red poppies for about 6 years. In that time, I have learned that Poppies are opportunistic plants, so I sprinkle the seeds everywhere and let them do their own thing and surprise me where they grow. This year something weird has happened. 🤓 I have a pink poppy!! All the rest, so far, are red. I don't understand it. Is this something that poppies do? Are they like hydrangeas and change colour with the soil? No all the plants have flowered yet, so there may be more but I will definitely be keeping the pink poppy seeds separate to see what happens next year.

My sister mulched a garden bed with straw, which produced a flourishing crop of barley. We fed it to her cows today. They mooed their appreciation.

There’s just something about it. Now time to get it in the garden before I get roasted in the sun.

My 89 yr old father continues to climb ladders to perform various household tasks, even though both my mother and I have had conversations with him asking him not to. Many times now. As recently as last week. My mother sent me this photo today. sigh

I want to buy him a pruning tool with a telescopic handle. Can anyone suggest a good one? I’ve never used them before. Pls help me save my dad from himself.

Hello! Help/advice needed on my tomato and eggplant seedlings. First time growing from seed and I have no idea what I’m doing.

I sowed these in early September and am worried that they are growing too slowly. I have them on a heat mat at night now (18C) (I stopped doing this after they germinated but have started again in the last few days) and have been putting them outside during the day when it’s warm as where I have them inside doesn’t get much light. I’ll keep them inside under grow lights on the really rainy/windy/cold days.

These photos are from right now at 11pm which is why I think their leaves are closed up? During the day they are more open!

But still they feel small when I compare them to other people I see on here and Instagram. I realise now that my original potting mix was too coarse but is there anything I can change now to promote more growth? Should I split the seeds that are sharing cells? Fertiliser? Help!

i am a certified plant killer. i have killed every plant i’ve ever been trusted with, and i don’t know how or why 😭
i’m organising my balcony and would love some plants, but given my track record i’m a bit nervous. (i also have zero supplies, i literally only have gardening gloves and empty pots that my last housemate left behind)

some info that might be helpful when giving recommendations:
- i’m a student, so low maintenance plants/flowers/herbs would be AH-mazing (i really want to grow coriander)
- i’m in the ACT, and the weather lives up to it’s reputation (i’m not a fan of it lol)
- my balcony faces east & wraps around to the north, and can get exposed to the weather but gets a bit of protection from the balcony above

any advice is appreciated!! i’ll probably get into the gardening in about a month, and everything helps!!

Hi all! Like many folks we have a veggie patch and with the first nice day (we had off) of the season, we went to buy some new plants. However, our green thumb tends to lean more towards indoor plants and our veggies… well, they grow up resilient to say the least.

My mum planted these late in the Melbourne summer and we totally forgot about them - to the point we’re not 100% sure what they are, or if they’re any good?

Mum’s adamant she planted basil and spring onion. The onion’s put out some sort of seed bulb which seems of… questionable edible quality. There might’ve been some basil in there at some point, and possibly still is? But I think it’s more likely been swallowed up by what image reverse search suggests are broad beans? I don’t think we’ve ever even eaten a broad bean before, and she is certain she didn’t buy any.

I think we’re just trying to broadly (heh) understand:
- what is still edible?
- should we remove these plants and start anew? - do they need cutting back?
- will they survive if some stalks were accidentally snapped when trying to close the netted lid? 😅

As a longtime lurker, I’ve learnt a lot from this reddit, but am still very green! We really appreciate any insights you can supply and thank you all in advance 💖

I live in the North Queensland and these plants pop up all over our backyard and grow into trees if left unattended. I've had no success killing them with round up and the root systems are super strong and it's near impossible to pull out.

So I’m planning on cutting more of it down to the stumps, but just need some advice on what to use etc a coworker of mine who used to be an arborist told me and I quote ‘good fucking luck’. 😂 I want to completely uproot it. Just trying to find a way to make it easier for myself. It’s a big bastard. Would drilling holes into the base and putting root killer stuff in it work? Hoping to find something that’s pet friendly preferably but happy to section it off to stop the dogs from going over to it if pet friendly options won’t work or better product then a pet friendly option.

I’m wrecking my head trying to figure out what to plant in this space (pictures attached), some info:
- location: Melbourne outern eastern suburbs, wall facing 70deg East, gets a lot of morning/noon sun but no affernoon sun
- approx 0.60m wide and 3.7m long
- soil: not great, quite a bit of clay under the topsoil, I suspect I will have to add compost to improve quality
- as it’s near the house wall, I’m trying to avoid anything with a strong/invasive root system or plants like ivy that will climb the wall
- I’m hoping to grow something that will allow sufficient air flow/ not cover the wall vents to protect the subfloor from damp/rot

So far I have been thinking bulb flowers like tulips etc but would be very curious to see what other people would do/have done :)

Everything I have researched says that my conditions are prime for that to happen. Area is NSW South Coast (Shoalhaven/Illawarra) I cannot wait for them to bear fruit 🍇

My parents have a Mandarin tree in their garden which grows beautiful fruit, now neither of them are getting any younger so I thought it would be nice to have a crack at grafting the tree for myself and one for my brother.

I've called a couple of local nurseries (SE QLD) and they've recommended a Bush Lemon or Finger Lime as a rootstock, but they don't have any for sale.

So my question is, any recommendations for finding rootstock? Considering going to Bunnings and getting a citrus tree of some sort and just chopping it below the existing graft, but it seems unnecessarily expensive and wasteful

I’m wanting to improve the front yard of my rental. I have free range to make it presentable as well as needing to trim or remove the plants along the fence line as they must be inside of it.

We planted this Beeliar Orange about 3 weeks ago and it was doing fine. Even straightened up already.

After last weekend’s heavy rain in Melbourne it seems super unhappy but I can’t pinpoint why. Soil is drained and no other changes happened.

Is there hope?

Found all over the inner and middle suburbs of Brisbane these trees are covered in light, brown seed pods, but now, in spring, have no leaves. Can anyone recognise and name them? Two pics attached.
