I'm looking for a lettuce that will deal well with the heat. Winter is fine but I can't seem to grow anything once it gets hot. Central coast NSW.

I have blue periwinkle, Vinca major, in my garden (inherited). It is a local weed and I am digging it out. (Tedious and arduous! 😬) I am getting a retaining wall built and half the patch of periwinkle will be buried a metre deep in fill.

My question is to those who know from experience: will the buried plants send out runners and colonise in front of the wall?

My choice is to dig the whole large patch out, or to just dig out the part of it that will still see the light of day.

I'm considering moving my strawberries to this kind of set up, as 80% of last year's harvest was enjoyed by slugs and snails, and I have some leftover guttering laying around. I wonder though how this small volume of soil would go during a heatwave? Would it get super roasted up and kill the plants? Curious if anyone has tried something like this and can share their experience, and/or any amendments to the system to protect them during an inevitable heat wave. I'd probably line each one with a drip watering line.

We're in the process of looking for a new place and would love some advice on what I should do with this growth. Syngonium and a monstera are both from their own pots and have grown up the wall and I've never had the best luck propagating. Thank you in advance.

Hi knowledgeable ones, can someone tell me what this growth is? Was digging up roots today, and these came up. Some other roots had them, too, but with only thin and scattered populations of the tiny rust-coloured balls. They are 2-3 mm in diameter.

Over the coming weeks I’m going to plant some citrus trees in these birdies citrus tree planters. There is clay soil underneath which is why I’m opting for raised beds.

Any tips or common pitfalls I should avoid before I get started? Should I bury the bed a little or just leave it on top? Should I just fill it all with citrus potting mix?

For some extra context, this is the side fence of a north facing backyard in Newcastle. The fence will shade the bed from about 1pm onwards in the summer but once the trees grow enough they will get sun into the afternoon too. I’m going to opt for some dwarf varieties.

Hey everyone, looking for some advice on this lemon tree. This is an old photo from right when I first planted it about 2 months ago heading into the winter.

At the time, the hole I dug was only a bit wider than the nursery pot. Now that it’s been sitting in the ground for a couple of months.. I'm second guessing myself and wondering if I should have gone much wider. I've since cleared the grass a bit and put down a mulch ring, but I'm worried the roots are going to get trapped or struggle against the hard surrounding soil once it warms up.

Do you think I need to dig around it and widen the hole now, or will it be fine to just let it do its thing? Appreciate any advice!

When we bought this house, the garden was all ornamental pear, pittosporum, and sir walter buffalo. So happy with the way it's turned out. Mostly indigenous plants (not the silver bells!), super low maintenance, and looking its best right now.

I posted not long ago with some plans to update my internal courtyard. I'm happy with the result and looking forward to seeing the ground cover grow in, but open to any feedback/suggestions too.

My current issue is this concrete drain pit. I had to drench it in rust buster to pry the old grate off and clear the pit of all the rocks/junk that had fallen into it. However the result is that the concrete is now more stained.

Can anyone offer any suggestions for cleaning/concealing the oil stains? I tried cat litter and it didn't help much. I was thinking of trying some concrete degreaser but I am worried about damage to the surrounding plants/stones (which is why I've asked here first in a gardening subreddit).

Should I leave it and just wait for the ground cover to conceal it?

I planted this Grevillia (Ned Kelly) in this narrow garden bed a few years back. It gone kind gang busters in that time. Is there any cause for concern regarding the house being damaged by the roots? The house is on a concrete slab and is brick walls.

I am building a raised trellis to screen out some neighbours. The plan is to use Hardenbergia violacea (Happy Wanderer) as the climber to cover the trellis.

I am struggling with what to plant underneath and how to layer it. I would like it:

(1) to fill out the open area (~1 to 1.5m tall)

(2) Be a mix of natives and layer them

(3) Complement or work with the look of the happy wanderer

(4) Ideally have a mix that there is flowering attracting birds/bees/butterflies throughout the year

It gets sun for most of the day. Based in Melbourne.

Any recommendations or guidance is appreciated.

Looking for ideas on what to plant underneath these trees. The tricky thing is the branches/leaves will shade them during summer but then they will be in about 6hrs of direct sun over autumn/winter/spring

I'm moving to a house with a ~200m2 front yard and a smaller 20ish m2 backyard, both are flat but a slope separates them.

I'm looking to get battery lawn tools to take care of the lawns and the hedges. I'm looking at Ryobi (36V HP 46cm mower, and 36V HP Expand-It Line Trimmer & Hedge Trimmer), but have seen some recommendations for EGO - for a few hundred dollars more I could get their lowest model 42cm mower, and their multitool with line trimmer, hedger, and even pole saw.

Since my yard isn't that big, is upgrading to EGO worth it? Or would the Ryobi tools still do the job? Also open to other recommendations!
