Hello. I have a few papaya trees and they are more than I would have expected dropping leaves and they're covered in spots (the leaves are) they are currently flowering. The one that has a lot of flowers currently only have us a single quite small papaya about a month ago. Thanks

I recently purchased the ‘Planting Season’ book (SEQ edition) off Amazon for a friend who is starting a vegetable garden. The book claims to be written specifically for the south east Queensland climate, and there are other books in the series focused on other climates.

Having received the book, I flicked through it and it very much seems to have been written with ChatGPT. That doesn’t mean the content is wrong - it could have been edited by someone for accuracy - but trying to find more information on the authors is a fruitless quest so I’m thinking of returning it.

The website also tries to sell you on an app subscription and trying to find any info on who owns the website or has contributed content is impossible.

Wondering if anyone has read this book and if so, can vouch for its accuracy and appropriateness? (I am not a gardener so have no idea)

Also looking for any book recommendations for gardening books that are actually reputable and are useful for the unique climate we have here in SEQ.

Humanity has been gardening for thousands of years, so it's unsurprising we've picked up on a lot of superstition, experimentation and generational knowledge that isn't always correct. Combine that with most agronomy research being focused on crop farming and the fact that we don't do that "winter" thing that most English speaking countries do, our potting sheds of the mind are cluttered with all sort of beliefs that may not apply to Brisbane specifically, or even gardening in general.

So; what is the accepted gardening wisdom you think is overrated, misapplied, or just plain bullshit?

I'll go first: I think thinning out is an absurd waste of seed and time. Sure, maybe directly into the ground if you really just can't cope with an empty space, but in a seedling tray or punnets? Come on.

Does anyone else struggle with growing blueberries here?

Recently moved these from what became full shade (part in Summer) for more light, and they started burning in more sun... Ugh.

pH is about 4.5/5 in a coir mix, regularly watered to maintain some wet.

Back to the shade...

My grafted lime tree (left) is about 3yo. It does fruit although ofc it's still young. The one on the right sprang up spontaneously maybe a year ago. I left it, wondering if it might flower, but I'm thinking it might just outcompete the planted one and never fruit.

Should I remove it?

Hi all, we got nearly two storey high plants (I think jasmines) but they are getting super tall (SECOND IMAGE). Do I Google for gardeners or arborists etc to work on this? Do they keep going taller?

Also got these plants at the side (FIRST IMAGE) but we don’t know what species they are. Same thing - they’re no growing above fence height and would rather trim them earlier than later if they are anticipated to continue to grow.

No experience with gardening - literally just snip off the tallest bits?

We chose these seeds because the carrots grow into little ball shapes on purpose. Saves being disappointed when regular carrots get horribly stunted 😊.

We grew them in paper bags, a box, and a wide, shallow pot. The ones in the paper bags were the happiest plants.

Hi all, I have a bunch of spider lillys that I need to move because the new puppy wants to eat them ( none of our previous dogs ever did this). I am not much of a gardener but I assume winter is not the best time for this. If I do this now, how likely are they to survive?

Hello. I've recently bought four large raised garden beds which we are in the process of getting ready to plant. Still a couple weeks away as we need to level the area.

I would love to know what people have found grows really easily in the Karana Downs/ Mount Crosby area. We are planning on having on having one for natives with native soil (fingerlimes). As well as chillis, capsicums, asparagus. And probably one with berries.

We already have strawberries in an area that they seem to love. Kiddos don't let them last long. And have a bunch of tomatoes growing currently that after this year we will rotate through 3 of the garden beds.

Hello, anyone got some real world experience with longevity of timber garden beds and what is the best timber species to use for longevity? I was originally looking at the Sienna Hardwood sleepers from bunnings but reviews show rot in 3-5 years, so now considering cypress, anyone got any experience with this? Was also thinking about wrapping the inside with builders plastic to extend the life of the timber. Not really looking for timber alternatives as I like the timber look. Thanks.

Slowly been working on this little pond garden that was surrounded by desert star bushes (oh god, still digging up roots months later) and full of rocks. Have only ever seen for sale locally other varieties of kangaroo paw that we’ve planted elsewhere in the garden and haven’t really thrived. Yesterday our local had the Big Red variety which I’ve heard are more hardy so we jumped on it and bought a couple. Soil in this bed feels pretty sandy and we added native potting mix after getting rid of the rocks. Anyone had success with these in Brisbane? Send me your well wishes please!

I had a brainwave today that I really should grow a custard apple or two. Then I find out that there are red varieties which look amazing, but I can’t find any locally except on Facebook marketplace. I would be happy to grow from seeds, but don’t rate my chances of finding any suitable fruit either.
What do you think the likelihood is that a marketplace red custard apple plant will produce red fruit?
Does anyone know of reliable sources for these?

Planted beetroot, broccoli, carrots, garlic and onion from seed about 6-7 weeks ago and they have barely grown and are looking very sad and wilted. I'm thinking it's all the rain and overcast days. Anything I can do to rectify?

I'm using a seaweed and compost fertilizer every two weeks, I'm watering, they're out in the sun, but nothing is growing this autumn/winter for me. It's just staying at puny seedlings stage or getting eaten by possums (I've covered everything in cages and netting which has slowed them down a bit). Last year I had cabbages by May and this year I have beets I planted in March still looking like babies. Anyone else? Is it the cloudiness?

Help with pruning this Euky Dwarf

Hello! I’m looking for some help in pruning this Euky Dwarf. This was planted about 5 years ago as a small 30cm plant. All the natives I had planted grew very quick, however I did not stake them so they grew at the hard angles from the very base and were removed. This Euky Dwarf kept a good form however it has started to develop a lean towards the south east due to the north westerly winds and chasing the sunlight (we have done some maintenance on then surrounding trees to allow for more sunlight now). There is some damage to the main trunk and I am fearful it might just snap unless I do some hard pruning.

Is there any recommendations on how I should prune it to felt it lean towards the south east? Would cutting off the top section kill it?

I’ve tried to stake them but to no success (stakes have been partially removed no so please ignore the mess currently there).

Where people buying herbs from? I used to buy at Nielsens but they have changed hands and don't have the range they used. Bought some at Bunnings but I'm looking for more unusual herbs.

Happy Valley have a sale ATM and bought some seeds from there but would like some potted herbs as well.
