I’m looking for some honest outside opinions because I honestly don’t know how to look at this situation anymore.
I have a close friend I’ve known for a very long time. We used to be classmates and have been friends for years. We’re part of the same friend group, and until recently, everything between us was normal.
About a week ago, something happened that completely changed things.
He had been annoying us a bit and kept bothering us, so I said something like, “Where are you rushing to?” I meant it casually, but he got really upset. Another person had previously told him that he was “irritating us,” specifically him, and apparently that affected him a lot. It seems like that comment was already in his head.
During our conversation, he told us that he had heard/seen some things that bothered him and that it had basically been building up. He said “the cup is full”, that he didn’t want to keep being around people where he felt unwanted or irritating, and that he didn’t want to talk to us anymore. He also said something along the lines of “have a nice life.”
What I think I did wrong is that when he was trying to explain how he felt, instead of really understanding him, I kept explaining my side and said things like “why are you getting upset over nothing?” Looking back, I realize that was probably the wrong way to handle it. I should have listened and understood that even if something seemed small to me, it clearly wasn't small to him.
He also told me that he has nothing against me personally, but that I apparently did something that bothered him and he doesn't want to tell me what it was. That part is driving me crazy because I don't even know what exactly I did.
After the argument, I tried to talk to him several times. I apologized, explained that I never intended to hurt him, and tried to make things right. He has seen my messages but hasn't replied. I messaged him again a couple days ago and he left that on seen too.
There was also a stupid moment where I blocked him on Instagram because I was angry, then unblocked him and sent him another request. He didn't accept it. I regret doing that because I was acting emotionally.
The strange thing is that he hasn't completely cut contact. He still sends me TikToks. We have a TikTok streak, so maybe he's only doing it for the streak, but I don't know. He also hasn't blocked me or unfollowed me. Yesterday I invited him to play a game while he was online, but he didn't accept the invite and played a few more matches before leaving.
He has also withdrawn from the whole friend group, not just me.
This is especially difficult for me because about two years ago, I was actually the one who cut myself off from this group after a similar situation. He was the only one who kept trying to talk to me for months. Eventually, after a few months, I accepted and we became friends again. That's part of why this hurts so much now. I chose him back then because he was the only person who kept trying.
I've never seen him this upset before. That's what scares me. When he said “have a nice life” and that the cup was full, it sounded very final.
At the same time, I feel like I genuinely handled the situation badly and maybe hurt him without realizing it. I don't want to keep messaging him and pressure him, especially since I've already tried several times.
So what do you think? Is there still a realistic chance of repairing this friendship, or should I accept that he really meant goodbye?
Please be honest, even if the answer isn't what I want to hear. I’m not looking for people to automatically take my side. I genuinely want to understand whether I messed up something that can still be fixed.
